Performance coupes go head-to-head - BMW M4 vs. Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG

The Thrill of the Drive: A Comparative Analysis of the BMW M4 and Mercedes-AMG C63

It's time to put the pedal to the metal and compare two of the most iconic performance cars on the market: the BMW M4 and the Mercedes-AMG C63. While both vehicles are known for their exceptional speed and agility, they have some key differences that set them apart from one another.

One of the most noticeable differences between the two cars is in terms of power output. The M4 comes with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six engine that produces an impressive 500 horsepower, making it significantly more potent than the C63's naturally aspirated V8 engine, which puts out 469 horsepower. However, as our driving experience reveals, this extra oomph comes at the cost of throttle response, with the M4 feeling slightly less eager to launch off the line.

Despite this, we were struck by how well the M4 handles, particularly when compared to the C63. The BMW's chassis is incredibly responsive and precise, making it a joy to drive on twisty roads. The brakes are also exceptional, with a lovely feel that makes you feel like you're getting every last bit of performance out of the car.

However, the C63 has its own strengths, particularly when it comes to its throttle response. The engine's rev-happy nature can be a delight to drive on the track, and the dual-clutch gearbox is surprisingly smooth, even if it doesn't quite match the M4's seamless shifting. On the road, the C63 feels more planted and stable, making it a great choice for those who prioritize comfort over outright performance.

But what really sets the C63 apart is its unique character. The M4 is undoubtedly a modern, high-tech car, with all the bells and whistles of a cutting-edge BMW. However, the C63 has a certain charm that's hard to deny – a kind of old-school, analog feel that's both nostalgic and endearing.

Our driving experience revealed that the C63 feels more substantial than the M4, particularly in terms of its weight distribution. The Mercedes is nearly 200 kilograms heavier, but this extra heft only adds to the car's sense of solidity and stability. Meanwhile, the M4 is incredibly light and agile, making it a true rocket ship when you put your foot down.

Despite these differences, both cars are remarkable performers in their own right. The BMW M4 accelerates from 0-62 miles per hour in just 4.1 seconds, while the C63 manages the same feat in a mere 4.2 seconds. However, it's worth noting that these times don't tell the whole story – both cars are capable of delivering truly exhilarating driving experiences.

One area where the M4 takes the lead is in terms of noise. The engine's throaty growl is simply intoxicating, making you feel like you're at the wheel of a proper racing car. Meanwhile, the C63's V8 engine is more subdued, but still utterly delightful to listen to – a true sound that'll leave you smiling long after you've stopped driving.

Ultimately, both cars are phenomenal in their own right, and it really comes down to personal preference. If you want a modern, high-tech car with all the latest gadgets and gizmos, the M4 is an excellent choice. But if you're looking for a more old-school, analog driving experience that's rooted in tradition, the C63 might be the better bet.

Options, Options, and More Options

One of the most fascinating aspects of the C63 is its incredible array of options – over 50 different trim levels and configurations to choose from. This allows buyers to tailor their car to their specific needs and preferences, making it a great choice for those who want a truly bespoke driving experience.

For our test drive, we opted for the top-of-the-line 507 version, which comes with an astonishing array of upgrades – including a unique aerodynamic package, sport suspension, and a host of interior trim options. The result is a car that's not only incredibly fast but also utterly stylish and exclusive.

In contrast, the M4 has a much more streamlined approach to options – with a few key trim levels to choose from, each with its own distinct character. While this may seem less exciting than the C63's dizzying array of options, we were pleasantly surprised by how well the M4's various configurations came together.

The Real Difference

One of the biggest differences between the two cars is in terms of their overall feel and approach to driving. The M4 is undeniably a modern car – with all the tech and gadgetry that comes with it. Meanwhile, the C63 has a more old-school, analog feel that's hard to deny.

However, despite these differences, both cars are remarkably well-balanced and responsive – making them a joy to drive on twisty roads or the track. The M4's dual-clutch gearbox is surprisingly smooth, while the C63's manual transmission (when combined with its sport suspension) is an absolute delight.

In terms of overall performance, however, the M4 takes the lead. With 500 horsepower and a lightning-fast 0-62 times, it's clear that this car is built for speed – and boy, does it deliver. Meanwhile, the C63 may not quite match the M4's raw power output, but its V8 engine has a unique character that's hard to deny.

The Verdict

Ultimately, both cars are phenomenal in their own right – each with its own strengths and weaknesses. The BMW M4 is a modern, high-tech car that's built for speed and agility, while the Mercedes-AMG C63 is a more old-school, analog experience that's rooted in tradition.

While it may not be the most powerful car on the market, the M4's unique character and razor-sharp handling make it an exceptional performer. Meanwhile, the C63 has a certain charm that's hard to deny – a kind of old-school, analog feel that's both nostalgic and endearing.

Whichever car you choose, one thing is clear: driving either the BMW M4 or Mercedes-AMG C63 is an unforgettable experience. So if you're looking for a thrilling ride that'll leave you grinning from ear to ear, look no further than these two incredible performance cars.

they have to do this because of ecological reasons and emissions etc nowadays but I really really miss already the kind of whack-whack response that he used to get from the old v8 and the old straight-6 in the e46 before it I mean yes you can do a web book I'm just a wanting more from the throttle response I really am having said that it does go like stink in a straight line when you put your foot down and it has got masses of torque very nearly 120 pounds feet more torque than the old v8 m3 but that is not to be sniffed at okay you lose the throttle response but that's what you get in return what's it like compared with the c63 well it actually feels quite a bit lighter on its feet than the c63 which is great and also it does do that kind of thing really rather well I mean I know that's of no significance whatsoever to driving your new m4 on the public road this is not a public road by the way it is a closed piece of road and but know that the chassis is really rather nice the brakes lovely feeling mega amounts of power the steering is quite kind of meaty and heavy and beefy but it's got it's got nice response to it and you know you know where the front end is on this car at all times but it's just that noise it's just not that well it really is very nice to listen to at all and the throttle response is soft unfortunately confession number one this is not a standard c63 this is the 507 version which costs 68,000 and has 500 horsepower but bear in mind the standard c63 really isn't a whole lot different from this and it costs fifty seven thousand pounds so you know very very close to the m4 the options here there I want we're talking about it's really interesting going from c63 to m4 because the m4 is are very obviously the more modern car and it's more economical it's more ecologically aware it cetera et cetera and the c63 is kind of from another era almost and it does feel more old-fashioned in everything it does the cabin feels quite a lot more old fashioned than the m4 but the big difference between them is the motor whopping great naturally aspirated v8 up front with a kind of slight nod towards emissions etc but but not really it's it's an out-of-date engine but it is an absolutely lovely engine in this car and it really does make in fours feel kind of slimy dull to be quite honest is that being fair well I think it is because you just you just paid for that once in this thing and it just Rockets forwards and makes the most lovely noise you know the noise is important in a car like this it really is it kind of defines your fun in a way also the c63 has got lovely steering beautiful feel lots of precision the m4 steering is nice but this is absolutely lovely the gear change in the c63 is definitely not as good as the m4 so it's slower on the way up it doesn't give you down shifts you know absolutely when you want them on the way down either and for some reason other why energy can't quite seem to crack the dual clutch gearbox I mean it's good but it's not brilliant like the m4 the other thing you are very much aware of in the c63 is the extra weight it carries beside the pin probably nearly two of just over two hundred kilograms heavier and again that's because it's a car from another era cars are getting lighter nowadays because of their clever use of cleverer materials and again the c63 feels a little bit old-fashioned up until start doing that sort of thing in it and then the light just appears in front of your eyes and everything that's lovely about driving a c63 comes to life despite the major differences in their weights the BMW needs 4.1 seconds to hit 62 miles an hour the energy just a tenth more at 4.2 seconds so that they couldn't feel more opposite to one another in their delivery they arrived at almost exactly the same time and on the way there the AMG feels and Sagan's huge legal invigorating enroute we listen to that listen there's even a little Trump on the phone as it up shifts but then he went down shift when you wanted to having said that the BMWs dual clutch gearbox does work more precisely than the engies the BMW also rides a fair bit more smoothly on rough roads and generates a touch less tire noise but what it doesn't do is steer sweetly as the Mercedes and again it's the AMG's extra bit of touchy-feely appeal that keeps it just out of reach of you and for it's not as talk is therefore definitely not but it is every bit as well as well balanced when you want to do the silly stuff I love this car I love this car so much it's crazy if it was my money I'm
