Zoom H1 Unboxing & Overview

The Zoom H1 Handy Recorder: An In-Depth Review

What's up guys? It's Lou from Unbox Therapy, and today we're taking a look at the Zoom H1 Handy Recorder. This is a stereo recorder that also has a microphone input if you want to use an external mic with it. It's become very popular among YouTubers and filmmakers alike, especially those who shoot with digital SLRs that have terrible audio on top of them. The H1 is powered by a double-A battery and is really portable, light enough to be stuck in your pocket.

The device is mostly made out of plastic, which might seem cheap at first glance. However, considering the price point of around $100, it's understandable why it would be made from plastic. Despite being made from plastic, the H1 is still a capable and reliable recorder that can deliver great sound quality. One of its standout features is its ability to hook up an external mic, which can provide even better sound quality than the built-in mics.

One of the most convenient things about the H1 is its line out for monitoring your audio via headphones. It's located at the top side of the left-hand side below a volume rocker. This allows you to easily switch between recording and playback modes while keeping an eye on what you're hearing through your headphones. Below that, you'll find a micro SDHC slot, which comes preloaded with a 2 gigabyte card. On the other side of the unit, you'll find a USB port, power and hold switch, trash button, play pause fast-forward rewind buttons, an input level rocker, and a line in for using an external mic.

The H1 also features stereo mics that are arranged in an XY pattern below the unit. This allows it to capture a wide range of frequencies and provide a more immersive listening experience. The LCD screen on the front of the unit displays basic information about the recorder's status, such as battery life or recording time left. On the back of the unit, you'll find a tripod mount for mounting a device, allowing you to stabilize your camera or other equipment while recording. You can also attach it to a hot shoe with an adapter, making it easy to integrate into your existing gear.

In addition to its impressive features, the H1 comes with some useful accessories in the box. A little bit of documentation is included, which is always welcome when buying new equipment. The micro SD card that comes with the unit also includes an adapter, which is a nice touch. You'll also receive an SD card usage precautions sheet, which serves as a reminder to handle your SD cards with care (apparently, you shouldn't bend or drop them!).

For those who want to take their H1 recording to the next level, there's an accessory kit available for purchase that includes a tripod, wall power adapter, microphone adapter, windscreen, and carrying case. This kit is a great way to get started with your H1 and can help you get the most out of your recorder.

So, guys, that's it for today's unboxing video! I'll be sharing my thoughts on how the H1 sounds in a later video, so stay tuned for that.
