The Audi RS3 Saloon: A Unique Approach to Sportiness

The Audi RS3 Saloon is a car that has generated significant interest and excitement among automotive enthusiasts. The decision to produce a saloon version of the popular RS3 Sportback model was not taken lightly, but it's clear that Audi had a compelling reason for doing so. "It's a car which is paramount for the global approach of our company of our brand," explains Stephan Winkelmann, Head of Audi Sport. "We have to look into segments and body types which are both exclusive but also well distributed all over the world."

Winkelmann's comments highlight the importance of expanding Audi's offerings globally, particularly in key markets such as North America and Asia Pacific. The RS3 Saloon is an attractive option for these regions due to its exclusivity and sporty credentials. With 394 horsepower and a top speed of 174 mph, this car is sure to turn heads on the road.

One of the standout features of the RS3 Saloon is its all-new, all-aluminum 5-cylinder engine. This powerplant is not only more efficient but also lighter, with a weight reduction of 26 kilograms compared to its predecessor. The Quattro system has been improved, offering better dynamics and handling than ever before.

Dynamic mode in particular has seen significant improvements, with the system now able to shuttle power to the rear wheels more quickly for a more dynamic driving experience. Audi Sport's aim is to create a car that is both fun to drive and practical, making it an attractive option for enthusiasts who value performance but also require comfort and versatility.

A New Era for Audi Sport

Under Winkelmann's leadership, Audi Sport has embarked on a new chapter in its history. With the RS3 Saloon, the company is pushing the boundaries of sportiness and exclusivity, while also expanding its global reach. The fact that this car is being introduced at a time when motorsport is becoming increasingly important for Audi Sport is not a coincidence.

"We are entering with this car with the LMS in our growing race series also here worldwide which is important for the awareness of the brand and also the image," explains Winkelmann. Motorsport has long been a key driver of innovation at Audi, and the company's involvement in various racing series around the world is set to grow.

Winkelmann himself brings significant experience to the role, having spent over 11 years with Lamborghini. While this is a new challenge for him, he is confident that Audi Sport has tremendous opportunities ahead.

"It's a new world but I think there are great opportunities in Audi Sport and now the strategy we we just started so there's a lot to do we have a lot on our plate but it's important to have a Clear Vision a focus and to do the things step by step," he says.

Style and Sophistication

After spending over 20 years with suit manufacturer Taylor, Winkelmann has established himself as one of the most stylish and dapper individuals in the automotive industry. His sense of style is not merely a personal preference but also an integral part of his public persona.

"I have a Taylor which I know since more than 20 years and he comes to my home and it's it's quick and he always just says this is good this is okay and then we fantastic," Winkelmann recalls. When it comes to fashion, the Audi Sport Head has no hesitation in expressing his opinions.

over there is the new S5 sportb but we're going to look at two cars just over there from Audi Sport so the big news from an EVO perspective is they've launched two rs3s this is the first one the RS3 LMS it's designed to race in something called a TCR Championship now I hadn't heard of this but it's effectively a spin-off of the WTC see and it's going to be just a more affordable sort of touring car style Championship so it has to be a sort of four-door fiveo body and they all got around about 330 braake horsepower from up to 2 L full cylinder engines and yeah they look like sort of quite fun things if it's it's an affordable end Tin Top racing then I should think the championship would be quite quite good the perhaps more relevant car is just over there and it's the RS3 Saloon so this is the brand new RS3 Saloon we've seen obviously rs3s and Sport backs before but this is the first time we've seen it in Saloon version and I I like a saloon sort of it looks pretty cool I wish the Arches were a bit more sort of blistered sort of like the old RS for the B7 variant which was just such a cool looking car but small wieldy we've actually preferred the saloon model of the est3 as well it for some reason just seems to work slightly better so we got high hopes for this it's got the all new all aluminium 5-cylinder engine from the ttrs new ttrs so it's got 394 brake horsepower 354 of talk not 62 and 4.1 seconds and a top speed of 174 mph if you add on the pack that takes off the limiter and all that sort of thing and um yeah the the aluminum engine is now 26 kilos lighter than the old one which is obviously quite a good thing given you're slinging it all the way out the front and the Quattro system as well better than ever different modes when you put it into Dynamic it sort of shuffles more talk to the rear more quickly for a more Dynamic Drive so yeah it should be very good but there's one man here we don't use do interviews at mot shows but there's one man who's the most stylish man in the mot industry and when we given the chance to interview we thought we'd better give it a go so over to you Stephan VLAN Steph thank you very much for talking to me you're welcome could you just explain the thinking behind we obviously had the RS3 sportb sometime now the the thinking behind going to The Saloon or sedan I suppose but the sedan the saloon as you say I think it's a car which is uh Paramount for the global approach of our company of our brand and uh it's the first time that we're going to sell more cars abroad so outside the European Turf and uh more precisely in the North American market and in Asia Pacific and I think it's a a first step so we have to look into segments and body types which are both exclusive but also well distributed all over the world sure absolutely and could you explain the importance for OB it's 40 Years of the 5-cylinder engine uh for Audi which is is fantastic incredible because it's a standalone position which makes this car so exclusive and gives them the opportunity to enter an a sport as one of the the let's say entry level cars in a very positive sense mean and uh the 40 years are incredibly successful this is the first time that we have an aluminum engine so 2.5 L with 400 horsepower something Incredible or it's a standard long position and it's very rare and unique that the manufacturer is producing and developing an engine for a small volume yes and you've OB unveiled the LMS as well is there much crossover between the two cars at all there is a crossover which is uh clear in is a lot of marketing which is sure but we are entering with this car with the with the LMS in our growing race series also here worldwide which is important for the awareness of the brand and also the image you know that social media even if there are not not a lot of people going to the races The Fan Community is growing and one of the main drivers is really Motorsport and we're looking into it and then we will come up with a strategy for that as well yeah and you obviously you've been in the job 6 months now six and a half and how how are you find how are you settling into ad obviously it's quite a sort of a culture change from it's very different it's very different and you know after more than 11 years and Lamborghini it's a new world but I think there are great opportunities in Audi Sport and now the the strategy we we just started so there's a lot to do we have a lot on our plate but it's important to have a Clear Vision a focus and to do the things step by step yes have you install a good coffee machine at Audi make sure and finally as the as the most stylish and most Dapper person in the um the entirety the most where do you get your suits from I have a Taylor which I
