Class 12 English Ch 06 On the Face of it

Going Back to Mr. Lam's Garden

Darry had been thinking about going back to Mr. Lam's garden to help him with the crab apples. He remembered how his mother had told him that he shouldn't go there because it was too far and he might not be able to come back. But Darry was determined to go back, not just to help Mr. Lam, but also to prove to himself that he could do something right.

As Darry walked towards the garden gate, he couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and nervousness. He had been looking forward to this moment for weeks, ever since his mother had told him about Mr. Lam's gardening skills. Darry wanted to learn from Mr. Lam, not just because he was an expert gardener, but also because he wanted to prove to himself that he was capable of doing something right.

But as soon as Darry opened the garden gate, he felt a sense of doubt creeping in. What if he wasn't good enough? What if he couldn't help Mr. Lam with his gardening tasks? But then he remembered what his mother had said - "Darry, you have to try, and you will learn." So, taking a deep breath, Darry stepped inside the garden, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

Upon entering the garden, Darry was greeted by the familiar sight of Mr. Lam's lush green plants and trees. He remembered how he had always been fascinated by the way Mr. Lam could make even the most mundane tasks seem exciting. As he approached the garden bench where Mr. Lam was sitting, he couldn't help but notice the sound of a branch shifting, followed by a loud crash. It seemed that Mr. Lam had fallen from the ladder while trying to pull down some crab apples.

Darry's heart skipped a beat as he rushed towards Mr. Lam, who lay on the ground with a faint smile on his face. "Mr. Lam, are you okay?" Darry asked, trying to keep his voice steady. Mr. Lam nodded weakly and said, "I'm fine, just a bit bruised." But as Darry looked into his eyes, he saw something that gave him chills - tears.

"Darry, I'm so sorry," Mr. Lam said, his voice trembling. "I didn't mean to fall. I was just trying to help you with the crab apples." Darry's heart melted at the sight of his mentor's distress, and he couldn't help but feel a sense of responsibility towards him.

Just then, Darry heard his mother's voice calling out from outside the gate. "Darry! Where are you?" she asked, her tone laced with worry. But Darry didn't respond. He was too busy trying to process what had just happened. How could Mr. Lam be so weak? Why did he have to fall?

As Darry stood there, frozen in shock, Mr. Lam reached out and placed a hand on his shoulder. "It's okay, Darry," he said softly. "You don't have to worry about me. I'm just glad you're here." And with that, Darry felt a surge of emotions wash over him - sadness, fear, but also a sense of responsibility towards someone who had become like a father figure to him.

The incident served as a wake-up call for Darry, making him realize the importance of living in the present moment. He realized that life was not about worrying about problems, but about finding solutions to them. As he looked at Mr. Lam's fragile body, he felt a sense of gratitude towards this old man who had taught him so much more than just gardening skills.

From that day on, Darry approached life with a new perspective. He learned to appreciate the little things and to find joy in the mundane tasks that often went unnoticed. And as he looked back at the garden gate, now empty and quiet, he knew that he would never forget this lesson - that sometimes, all it takes is one person to change our lives forever.

The Power of Friendship

Darry's journey with Mr. Lam was more than just a simple gardening friendship. It was a relationship that blossomed from mutual respect, trust, and understanding. Despite their differences - Darry's outgoing nature and Mr. Lam's introverted personality - they found common ground in their shared love for the natural world.

As Darry spent more time with Mr. Lam, he began to realize that his mentor had been hiding secrets of his own. He had lost a limb in a tragic accident years ago, and yet he continued to garden with passion and dedication. But what was most remarkable about Mr. Lam was not just his physical disability, but his mental strength and resilience.

Through their conversations, Darry learned that life was not about being disabled or normal; it was about living with purpose and finding ways to adapt to the challenges we face. Mr. Lam's story served as a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope for a better tomorrow.

As Darry reflected on his time with Mr. Lam, he realized that their friendship had been more than just a mutually beneficial arrangement. It was a bond forged through shared experiences, laughter, and tears. And though Mr. Lam's physical presence was no longer in the garden, his spirit lived on in Darry's heart.

The Legacy of Mr. Lam

Years went by, and Darry grew up to become a skilled gardener and naturalist. He never forgot the lessons he learned from Mr. Lam - about perseverance, adaptability, and the importance of living in the present moment. And though his mentor was no longer with him, their bond remained strong.

Darry continued to tend to the garden, nurturing the plants and trees that had become a symbol of their friendship. He would often sit by the bench where Mr. Lam used to sit, remembering the countless hours they spent together, exploring the natural world and sharing stories.

As he looked out at the garden, now teeming with life and color, Darry knew that he owed it all to Mr. Lam's legacy. The old man had taught him not just gardening skills, but also the value of living a life that was true to oneself. And though he would never be able to repay Mr. Lam for everything he had given him, he vowed to continue their mentorship and pass on the lessons they had learned together.

In the end, Darry's journey with Mr. Lam served as a testament to the power of friendship and the impact one person can have on another's life. It was a reminder that sometimes, all it takes is one person to change our lives forever - to show us that we are capable of more than we ever thought possible.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: engood morning children i hope you all are fine and safe at your homes so children today we will do chapter number six of our english reader book vistas entitled on the face of it on the face of it written by suzanne hill so children before reading this i would like to share with you that this is not actually a story or a novella or something like that this is a play right this is a play this play features an old man named lamb and a small boy named derry right an old man named mr lamb and a small boy whose name is derry right so the play features the meeting of both these the old man and the small boy in the garden of old man right old man has a garden and this play features the meeting between the two people right the old man strikes up a friendship with the boy who is very withdrawn and defiant right you know there are people who are introverts there are people who do not want to share who do not want to share who do not want to discuss their feelings and emotions who don't want to open their mind and hurt with others so the boy was of that nature the boy derry was of such kind of nature that he remains withdrawn and defiant right introvert type so what is the point what is the bond that unites the two persons in the play so let's read the text in order to get our answers right so see we are going to read scene one mr lam's garden there is the occasional sound of bird song and of tree leaves rustling you know the occasional sound means whenever wind blows or whenever this you know scene changes birds singing birds are there so tree leaves are producing rustling sound darry's footsteps are heard as he walks slowly and tentatively through the long glass right so darry that young boy his footsteps are hurt as he was walking slowly and you know tentatively in a tentative manner through the long grass that was there you know he pauses and then walks on again he comes round a screen of bushes so that when mr lam speaks to him he is close at hand and darry is startled you know derry startled he remained wonder struck that how can somebody appear right in front of me when he was not expecting anyone else in that garden right mind the apples so this is the dialect by mr lamb mind the apples darry says what who's that who's there mr lam says lamb is my name mind the apples crab apples those are wind falls in the long grass you could trip right darry says i there i thought this was an empty place i didn't know there was anybody here it means darry entered the garden of mr lamb unnoticed stealthily right he was not aware that the owner of the garden would be there inside it right that's why when derry just entered the garden he was walking through the grass mr lamb objected him and asked him mind these apples right why he asked derry to mind those apples because the apples were crab right so wind falls in the long grass was there so dairy could have been tripped right so that's why mr lamb warned derry at that time in an answer to his statement darry told him that he thought that was an empty space he was not aware that it would be a garden it would be an apple orchard right so he did not know that anybody would be there in this place so next page you know mr lam says that's all right i am here what are you afraid of boy that's all right it means mr lamb you know consoled darry that there is no need to be afraid of right he consoles him that he should not be afraid of anyone only mr lamb is there darry says i thought it was empty an empty house mr lamb says so it is since i am out here in the garden it is empty until i go back inside in the meantime i am out here and likely to stop a day like this beautiful day not a day to be indoors so you know from the statement it seems that mr lamb must be a nature lover right so that's why he begins to talk to derry and he asks him that in the meantime he was there in the garden because since this is his garden moreover that was a beautiful day that was not a day that is meant to stay indoors right you know some of the days are beautiful sometimes the sunlight is very low sunlight is very dim sometimes it's almost a rainy season rainy day sorry right so here mr lamb tries to incite a beautiful thing into the mind of that young boy dary that since that was a beautiful day that's why mr lamb is outside in the garden in order to enjoy the beauty of nature right next darry he was in a panic he says i have got to go it means darry expresses his desire to go back his go back to his home mr lam says not on my account i don't mind who comes into the garden the gate is always open only you climb the garden wall darry becomes angry you were watching me mr lam said i saw you but the gate is open all welcome you are welcome i sit here i like sitting darry said i would not come to steal anything right mr lam says no no the young lads still young lad still means the young boys often steal they scrum the apples and you are not so young darry says i just wanted to come in into the garden mr lam so did so you did here we are then darry says you don't know who i am and the man mr lamb answers that boy 13 or so darry in an angry tone says 14 but i have to go now goodbye mr lamb you know he says nothing to be afraid of just a garden just me but darry says that but i am not i am not afraid he gives a pause and says people are afraid of me mr lam said why should that be it means you know up to this conversation the writer suzanne gill has shown that derry is a kind of introvert as i told you in the introduction to the lesson as well derry was an introvert it means the people who do not want to get mixed with other people in the society right so here derry is showing a kind of resistance he is showing a kind of opposition to mr lamb expressing that he doesn't want to mix up with other people he was not aware that somebody would be there in the garden or if he if he had known that someone is there inside the garden he would have never come here that means he wanted to live alone darry wanted to live alone rome alone right so mr lam he tries to guess the age of derry and asking him that you seem to be a boy of 13 years of age so to that derry objected in a bit anger and corrected him that 14 right and asked him that he has to go from that place because he doesn't like the company of other people but mr lamb so being a kind fellow you know opposite in nature to derry opposite he was a kind fellow and he tried his level best to convince darry to stay in the garden because he is not going to do any harm to dairy right he is again and again consoling dairy that there is no harm to stay in this garden there is no need to be afraid of in this garden only he is there it means only mr lamb is there and he darry should not be afraid of anyone right so next he says derry answers that people are afraid of him when mr lamb asked him the reason derry answers that everyone is afraid of me it doesn't matter who they are or what they say or how they look how they pretend i know i can see mr lam see what daddy says what they think mr lam said what do you think then darry says you think here's a boy you look at me and then you see my face and you think that's bad that's a terrible thing that's the ugliest thing i ever saw you think poor boy but i am not not poor underneath you are afraid anybody would be i am when i look in the mirror and see it i am afraid of me you know children from this paragraph it is clear that dairy is not you know in a position to show his face to others probably he has got some scars probably he is very ugly probably he is very dark in complexion right his skin tone is very dark so something is wrong with his face and he has that inferiority complex of that particular problem right he has inferiority complex due to that particular lagging i would say right so he here asks mr lam that people are afraid of him it means people are afraid of derry why because darry has an ugly face like people think bad of him he even adds to that statement that whenever he looks at his own face in the mirror he himself gets afraid of him right so his face is so terrible so ugly right so that's the interpretation of derry about his face let's see what happens next come to the next page that is mr lam says no not the whole of you not of you darry says yes see children i hope you can feel the difference this is derry the 14 year old boy and this is mr lamb the owner of the garden i hope you can see the difference in his legs right so something would be there something common would come out of these two guys and this is larry right his face has something black on it some black scars some maybe permanent black imprints of something right so they are conversing here under a tree see darry says yes he is horrible mr lam says that later on when it's a bit cooler i'll get the ladder and the stick and pull down those crab apples they are ripe for it i make jelly it's a good time of year september look at them orange and golden that's magic fruit i often say but it's best picked and made into jelly you could give me a hand you know you could give me a hand means mr lamb is asking for daddy's help there because he wanted to take down those crab apples because you know they were ripe for it and he wanted mr lamb wanted to make jelly out of those crab apples right because that was the good time of the year september right and he was looking at those crab apples that were orange and golden in color right mr lamb called his apples magic fruit right so he often says that it is the best time to pick up those apples and jelly should be prepared for them and at the same time he is asking derry to help him see what darry says what have you changed the subject for derry what he is saying that why are you changing the talk we were talking about my face what is this people always do that why don't you ask me why do you uh sorry why do you what they all do and pretend is pretend it isn't true and isn't there in case i say you looking in mind and get upset i'll tell you don't ask me because you are afraid to mr lam you want me to ask say so then darry i don't like being with people any people so this line is the crux of this play i don't like being with people any people mr lam says i should say to look at it i should say you got burned in a fire now mr lamp when he is insisted by darry again and again he is asking derry that what happened to his face did it get burned in a fire because it was so blackened on one side as if like it had been set on fire by mistake or so right darry here you know he is showing irritation over the nice behavior of mr lam mr lam just changed the subject so that darry should not pay attention to his burned or that so-called blackened face that's why mr lam you know changed the topic of the discussion and he began to talk about his crab apples that he wanted to pull down and prepare jelly out of them but you know darry who was not at all willing to get mixed up with mr lamb or spend time with him he talks to mr lam in an angry voice and asked him that i know you think bad of me you think bad of my you know so called blackened and burnt face but you are not asking me the reason that how it got burned so mr lam didn't want to ask him because as i have always uh sorry already dropped new hint that there was a difference between the two legs of mr lam he himself had a limitation he himself had a shortcoming so that's why he better understands the mentality of people who have one or the other shortcoming right so that's why he didn't want to ask anything to dary but here darry incites him again and again to ask some question about his burnt face what darry answers when mr lamb asked him that what happened to your face did you get burn and fire so darry says not in a fire i got acid all down the side of my face and it burned it all way oh my god he says that acid split over his face and that's why it got burnt right it ate up my it ate my face up it ate me up and now it's like this and it won't ever be any different you know darry here informs mr lam that his face has been burned by the spilling of acid on its side and it has eaten that acid right that acid has eaten up his face eaten up his mind because he is totally depressed after his face has become so ugly and now that you know he feels like hell and he doesn't want to talk to anybody because it won't be ever it won't ever be any different he means to say that his nothing can be done of his face it means he must have gone to the doctors the surgeons for its checkup and they must have told derry that nothing can be amended his face can never be turned back right it can the original face can never be brought back and he has to live with this ugly face only that's why he is so much depressed and he hates meeting people because everybody talks about his face nobody talks to him on his face rather everybody talks about his face that it is burned right i hope you are able to understand it next page mr lam says no our dairy says are not you interested in my story mr lamb answers that you are a boy who came into the garden plenty do plenty do means a lot of people come come in my garden i am interested in nobody anything there is nothing god made that doesn't interest me look over there over beside the far wall what can you see darry says rubbish mr lamb says rubbish look boy look what do you see daddy says just grass right so he notices that grass was there right and stuff weeds weeds also mean that you know that extra plants or extra growth of grass that grows by itself without sowing any seed so dairy was not able to see anything positive in that where mr lamb appointed him to ask about the thing see what is the answer of mr lamb mr lamb further says that some call them weeds weed means useless plants right unwanted grass and plants if you like then a weed garden that there's fruit and there are flowers and trees and herbs all sorts all sorts means of all types but over there weeds i grow weeds there why is one green growing plant called weed and another flower where is the difference it's all life growing same as you and me you know he tells them that as weeds are considered unwanted plants unwanted grass so everything is there on the earth for a reason right mr lam being a matured and wise man he tries to make derry understand the fact that all sorts of human beings are there all sorts of it means all types of human beings are there a few people are lame some are blind while others are deaf and dumb right some have mental problems like a lot and lot of problems are there on this earth as he gives the example of those plants right so unwanted plants are there unwanted people are there but everybody's you know way of observation way of seeing them is different see darry says we are not the same when lamb you know compares darry with himself darry says that we are not same lamb says that i am old you are young you have got a burnt face i have got a tin leg you know one of his legs were made of tin see one of his legs was made of tin right he must have lost his leg due to one reason or the other he would explain here to derry in the upcoming paragraphs right so mr lamb tells darry that we are same right why the dif only differences are that i am old and you are young and dary has got a burnt face while mr lamb has got a thin leg right not important you are standing there i am sitting here where's the difference darry says why have you got a 10 leg you know now derry takes a bit of sympathy on mr lam and asked him that how he has got or why he has got that 10 leg it means where is the original leg lam says real one got blown off years back lamy lamb some kids say you know people especially kids often make fun of the disabilities of other people that's why you know children call him lamey lamb the one who is lame the one who has got one leg and his real leg got blown off many years ago right haven't you heard them you will lamey lamp it fits doesn't trouble me mr lamb also asked darry that haven't you heard children calling me by this name lamy lam lemme lam right but he also states to derry that he doesn't mind any such bad comments by the people in fact he doesn't pay attention to such comments made by kids right what darry says but you can put on trousers and cover it up and no one sees they don't have to notice and stir lamb says some do some don't they get tired of it in the end there's plenty of other things to stare at daddy like my face lamb says like crab apples or the weeds or a spider climbing upper silicon ladder or my tall sunflowers darry says other things lamb says that it's all relative beauty and the beast right darry says what that's supposed to be mean mr lamb you tell me darry says that you need not think they haven't all told me that fairy story before it's not what you look like it's what you are inside handsome is as handsome does beauty loved the monstrous beast for himself and when she kissed him he changed into a handsome prince only he wouldn't he would have stayed a monstrous beast i won't change in that way no you won't settle you know darry here tries to scratch his injuries you know not physically but you know in an emotional manner he says that you know that lamb can cover his leg lamb can wear full trousers and cover his leg wear shoes over that and hardly anybody would you know come to know that he has one such or such leg or he is lame or he is a normal person right so he can hide it but derry cannot hide his face all the time because people would even suspect that why is he hiding his face right so now what he's supposed to mean lamb asked him to tell him darry there explains that lamb doesn't need to think that all the people have told him fairy stories you know it's not like that how people look outwardly it is like the the ones who are handsome are handsome because they have done handsome deeds you know often it said that beauty is not external only it is inside it is inside our mind right so beautiful minds have more relevance than beautiful faces so here he gives an example that beauty loved the monstrous beast right that beauty is personified that beauty once loved a beast that was monstrous that was horrible in outlook right and beauty loved the beast for himself and when beauty kissed him the beast changed into a handsome prince right so only he would not he would have stayed a monstrous beast but he says that darry says that his face cannot be changed right he has to care you know pass his life with this bad face only you know children actually it seems that derry is too much depressed by the continuous comments of the people by the you know daily conversations of the people in which he often hears that his face has got burns his face is ugly he doesn't look handsome he doesn't look appealing so he must be fed up with all these conversations of the people right so further daddy says that no and no no one will kiss me ever only my mother and she kisses me on the other side of my face and i don't like my mother to kiss me why does it because she has to why should i like that i don't care if anybody ever kisses me right mr lam says but do you care if you never kiss them darry said what girls pretty girls long hair large eyes people you love darry says who would let me not one lamb says who can tell this darry's answer was i won't ever look different when i am as old as you i look the same i'll still only have half a face you know that's why the chapters title is on the face of it because face has been given so much importance by the people a kind of immaturity a kind of i would say narrow-mindedness is shown when dairy is emphasizing too much on his face but see why he should not do that he's just a kid of 14 years and he has seen such a misery in his life he has faced such a big problem in his life that he knows that nobody wants to kiss him because his face is so ugly nobody loves him because he looks so horrible even he shares with mr lam that only his mother kisses him and that too because she has to you know his mother also wants to express her love actually she doesn't want to kiss derry because of his ugly face but she kisses her son reason being so that darry should feel a bit of motivation and understanding darry should feel that his mother loves him only for the sake of making a show off darry's mother kisses him daily but she also kisses him on the other side of the face not on the burned side you know children these small things matter a lot actually i feel this place written on child psychology that how a child thinks how a child feels and what minor and major things can leave a big impact on the mind of a child right so see now lamp is tempting dairy that what would happen if he is kissed by somebody or what would happen if he gets a chance to kiss somebody darry becomes angry there and asks mr lam that nobody would like uh to make dairy like let derry kiss themselves right lamb tries to attract his attention by giving the mention of beautiful pretty girls right having long hair large eyes but you know dairy hair says that nobody would allow me to kiss the self right because he will not look any different i hope that's clear up to now next mr lam says so you will but the world will not the world has got a whole face and the world's there to be looked at darry says do you think this is the world this old garden mr lam says when i am here not the only one but the world as much as anywhere darry says does your leg hurt you mr lam tin leg sorry tin doesn't hurt boy darry says when it came off did it lamb said certainly now darry is asking a childish question that you know when some suppose somebody's leg breaks off somebody's arm or any body part breaks off obviously it will pain a lot at that moment see mr lam has got a new leg implanted he has arranged for a tin leg to support himself so that he should not be dependent upon anybody else for his survival in life right but you know again the question is that when the particular body part was blown off from the body was detached from the body or i would say when it was separated from the body due to any reason so obviously it would have hurt a lot at that time right so even one of our hair is plucked we get you know a bit frightened we feel a bit of pain at that time see if one finger is cut and pain of sorry a lot of pain is felt by the person and if leg is cut off of course the pain would be unbearable and mr lam here explains to derry that certainly he got hurt when his leg was blown off and darry says now i mean where is the where the tin stops at the top lamp says now and then in wet weather it doesn't signify you know lamb answers him that it hurts a bit now and in wet weather you know whenever there is rain it hurts often uh like whichever wounds are very deep those wounds pain in rainy season right because of the cold weather it doesn't signify means that doesn't matter much to mr lam dary says oh that something else they all say look at all those people who are in pain and brave and never cry and never complain and don't feel sorry for themselves lamb says i haven't said it derry says and think of all those people worse than you worse off than you means now a 14 years old young child is you know teaching an old man that you should not look at your weakness you should look at those people who don't even have the money to get a tin leg you should look at those people who have become permanently lame right he is you know kind of motivating mr lam further says that think you might have been blinded or born deaf or have to live in a wheelchair or be draft in your head and dribble you know lamb says that's all true and you know it darry says it won't make my face change do you know one day a woman went by me in the street i was at a bus stop and she was with another woman and she looked at me she said this she said dash dash whispered only i heard her she said look at that that's a terrible thing that's a face only a mother could live right so painfully darry shares this with mr lam that once he was encountered by two women right when he was probably going somewhere and at a bus at a bus stop one woman told another it means told her fellow women that see that how ugly face this boy is bearing you know his face is so ugly that only his mother can love him we have often seen that however wrong the children are like however big mistake a child commits mother is always on the side of the ward right so that's the situation the lady tells another lady her company that only his mother can love his face that he is so ugly no one else would be able to love him he is so horrible in appearance right mr lam says do you believe everything you hear then darry said it was cruel mr lam says maybe not meant as such just something said between them darry said oh i heard only i heard it i heard lamb said and is that the only thing you ever heard anyone say in your life daddy says no i have heard a lot of things lamb says so now you keep your ears shut darry you are peculiar peculiar means strange you say peculiar things you ask questions i don't understand darry is irritated again you know that al adolescence age his age is immature but he is trying to be very thoughtful even i if i simply say that he is trying to be a philosopher he tries to teach mr lam that mr lam should not have inferiority complex mr lam should not feel inferiorly complex because he is much better than many people in his life right so see now he is rebuking mr lam rebuking you know scalding dantna he is rebuking rebuking mr lam that mr lamb is a peculiar strange person and he talks of strange things which are out of dary's mind mr lam says i like to talk have company you don't have to answer questions you don't have to stop here all the gate is open darry says yes but you know lamb says i have a hive of bees behind those trees over there some hear bees and they say bees buzz but when you listen to bees for a long time they hum the hum means sung i hear them singing my bees daddy says but i like it hair i came in because i liked it when i looked over the wall lamb says you hadn't seen me you would not have come in darry says no lamb says no you are telling a lie darry it would have been trespassing mr lam says ah that's not why then darry added that i don't like being near people when they stare when i see them being afraid of me right so mr lam says that you could lock yourself up in a room and never leave it there was a man who did that he was afraid you see see children now they are discussing that on the fact that derry would not have entered the place if he had seen mr lam before coming to the garden why because darry doesn't want to get mixed up with people while in the previous tanja mr lamb has clearly expressed his desire of talking to other people getting mixed with them you know mr lamb used to live alone in that garden house and he doesn't have any regular company he is hungry of love he is hungry of caring and sharing but you know the person he meets that is derry derry is opposite to him in nature right so they are discussing that why they have you know they have been together at that place and darry here says that like he's not afraid of people and he's not afraid of being him he whatever face he is having he cannot change it of course but he has to live with it and he has accepted that fact right he has accepted him his fate so mr lam further says that you could lock yourself up in a lamb suggested him you know sarcastically he suggested him that he could lock himself up in a room and never leave it and you know there was a man who did that he was afraid you see of everything everything in this world a bus might run over him or a man might breathe deadly germs onto him or a donkey might kick him to death or lightning might strike him down or he might love a girl and the girl would leave him and he might slip on a banana skin and fall and people who saw him would laugh their heads off so he went into his room and locked the door and got into his bed and stayed there darry says forever you know a long story narrated by mr lam that once a man happened to face this this this and this thing it means a bus might run over him right he could have taken deadly germs into his mouth and a donkey might have kicked him and he would have been dead and you know lightning from sky must have strike him or you know a girl must be his beloved and the girl must have left him or he might have slipped on a banana peel banana skin and people would have laughed at him that's why he got frustrated and he logged himself in a room right and that's how you know he got into his bed and wanted to stay inside only didn't want to go out and meet people when darry asks forever lamb says for a while then what a picture fell off the wall onto his head and killed him darry laughs a lot you know this is the first instance that the writer shares that darry laughs mr slam says you see dary says but you still say peculiar things derry remarks that mr lamb talks about strange things mr lam peculiar to some extent darry says so what do you do all day darry asks a question to mr lam that what is his business throughout the day mr lamb answers that he sits in sunlight he reads books you know he says ah you thought that it was an empty house but inside its full books and other things second characteristic of mr lamp is shown that apart from being a lovable character being a lover of nature he shares that he is a book lover as well right he has plenty of books inside his house full dairy says but there aren't any curtains at the windows you know derry is of that suspicious nature pointing out each and everything every little thing in fact i would say right lamb answers that i am not fond of curtains it means lamb gives him answer that he doesn't like to have curtains in his house shutting things out shedding things in i like the light and darkness and the windows open to hear the wind darry says yes i like that when it's raining i like to hear on the hear it on the roof lamb says that so you are not lost are you not all together you do hear things you listen darry says that they talk about me downstairs when i am not there what will he ever do what's going to happen to him when we have gone right however will he get on in this world looking like that with that on his face that's why that's what they say right so see till now they are discussing that what particular objects mr lam has in his house mr lam has a lot in lot of books inside his house he doesn't like to have curtains because he loves light darry here discusses that he also loves that sound light but of the rainy season only and he wants to or he always goes on the roof of his house in order to enjoy that season right here mr lamb catches a nerve of derry and asks him in fact he wants to inform him that he is not altogether lost it means he can still revive from the inferiority complex of his burnt face and he can still live his life happily see what dary says that they talk about me downstairs darry tells mr lam that people do talk about me right people criticize my face when i am not there it means people criticize him in his absence not on his face see the title on the face of it but derry wanted children darry always wanted that whatever talk people do about him it should be done on his face on the face of it right he wanted to listen to the thoughts of people that what they think about him what they speak about him he really wanted to know what ill thoughts people have contained in their minds about terry what he says further what he will ever do what's going to happen to him when we have gone however will he get on in this world looking like that with that on his face that's what they say you know that's what people say about him that his face is very bad how is he going to live his life who will love him who will marry him what is going to happen to him in his later life how will he actually survive in this world this is what people's conversation is and of course children remember the age he is 14 years right less than your age so he is an immature fellow and that's why he always mind such things said by people such sarcastic remarks such bad remarks deeply hurt him right so i hope that's clear up to now mr lam further asks him lord boy it means he remembers god and says that boy you have got two arms two legs eyes and ears you have got a tongue and a brain now see mr lamb is counting the blessings that are bestowed upon dairy by god right you will get on the way you want like all the rest of the people and if you choose and set your mind to it you could you could get on better than all the rest how lamb says same way as i do darry says do you have any friends lamb says hundreds darry says but you live by yourself in that house it's a big house too you know now darry is asking that if you have a lots of friends hundreds of friends why do you live alone in this house and you two have a big house why don't you live with other people if you have friendship with them so lamb says that friends everywhere people come in everybody knows me the gate is always open lamb tells him that why he has a lot of friends because he always keeps his garden open for everyone people come to his garden enjoy themselves take the fruits steal them enjoy the honey right get a lot of things that's why they are pleased to visit his carton right they come and sit here and in the front of the fire in winter kids come for the apples and pears right he tells that children come to his garden for getting apple and beer right and for toffee you know toffee how to how come toffee in a garden he says that i make toffee with honey that mr lamb prepares candies in his garden with the help of honey anybody comes so have you darry says but i am not a friend you know after talking so much after talking so many things with mr lam still daddy is not ready to get mixed up still dairy is not feeling like developing some kind of attachment with mr lamp he interrupts his talk and tells him that i am not your friend lam says certainly you are so far as i am concerned what have you done to make me think you are not lamb asked him that how can you say that we are not friends we have become friends today darry says that you don't know me you don't know where i come from or even where my house is but my name is right mr lam here says that what should that signify why should that signify in fact do i have to write all your particulars down and put them in a filling box before you can be a friend i suppose no daddy says mr lam says that you could tell me your name if you choose and not if you did not darry tells him his name that derry it's only derek by but i hate that name derek so that's why i love if people call me terry right if i am your friend you don't have to be mine i choose that you know a very strange behavior very very strange behavior of a 14 year old boy who tells mr lam that if i have become your friend please don't become my friend you know friendship is mutual but here he says that don't become my friend and i wanted that that lamb says that certainly it means land obviously is a matured person and he agrees to whatever darry says right so lamb says that certainly darry says i might never come here again but you might never see me again and then i couldn't still be a friend why not lamb says daddy says that how could i you pass people in the street and you might even speak to them but you never see them again it doesn't mean they are french right mr lam says that doesn't mean they are enemies either it does you know now they are discussing the people who pass on in the street right you know derry asked mr lam that mr lam might be able to speak to those people right but he might never you know meet them again in their life same may be the case of derry dary has come into the garden for the first time and he may not visit it again ever in his life right so neither they are friends nor they are enemies darry says that they are just people that's all right everybody we see you know children we see a lot of people in our life whenever we are going by train to some other place we are going by bus even if we are going by our own vehicles so we see a lot of people even we meet a lot of people i would say but those are neither our friends nor our enemies right so that's the thing next is people are just never nothing never there are some people i hate and mr lam says that would do you more harm than any bottle of acid acid only burns your face dairy says only lamb says like a bomb only blew up my leg there is worse things that can happen you can burn yourself away inside darry says after i would come home one person said he would have been better off stopping in there in the hospital he would be better off with others like himself she thinks blind people only ought to be with other blind people and idiot boys with idiot boys only lamb says in people with no legs all together darry says that's right lamb says what kind of world that would be darry answers at least there would be there would be nobody to stare at you because you were not like them right so children here i am reminded of the dialogues of that movie chapak in which deepika padukone starred you know in that movie also this issue has been raised that why the acid attack victims work are kept or are supposed to you know stay together in some shelter homes why they are supposed to be together there because this world is full of cruel people this world is full of merciless people who often inflict bad and you know i must say illegal comments on the acid attack victims so because they feel insecure because they feel negative while living while surviving among us the normal people so that's why a plan is suggested that people with some disability should be kept together right why because if somebody meets the other person with the same disability they are a bit consoled and they don't have anybody to laugh at them nobody would make fun of one of them right so that's what lamb asked that lame people should also be kept with other lame persons darry says yes that's the idea right so see what happens here right he says darry says that at least there will be nobody to stare at you because they you weren't like them right so lamb says that other people you know you think you are you are just the same as all other people with burnt faces just by what you look everything is different everything is the same but everything is different itself a contradictory statement darry says how do you make all that out lamb says watching listening thinking right darry says that i would like a place like this a garden i would like a house with no curtains right daddy says that i would like a house with no curtains lamb says the gate is always open dary says but this is not mine lamb answers everything is yours if you want it what is mine is anybody's you know a great idea of sharing offered by mr lam he is offering that everything whatever is whatever belongs to mr lam now belongs to darry also right he is so much ready to share everything so he says that like so i could come here again darry asked him that if he could visit the garden of mr lamb again even if you were out i could come here it means lamb offers him certainly you might find others here of course right darry says oh it means darry is sad that if some other stranger would be there again they will make fun of daddy's face now mr lamb says well that need not stop you they need not mind daddy says i would stop them they would mind me when they saw it me they look at my face and run you know darry is so much depressed because people often shout after looking at his face because he has got a burnt face people often get afraid you know those scenes of shepard movie whenever people used to look at the face of deepika padukone that was burned by acid so they used to shout on the spot they used to you know cry they get afraid after looking at her face why because it had become so horrible so same as the case with derry i can very very relate these two personalities that people mind looking at him people you know run away after looking at his face they feel afraid of looking at him right next page mr lam says that they might be they might not be you would have to take the risk so would they right so darry says no you would you might have me and lose all your other friends because nobody wants to stay near me so if they can help it so mr lam says that i have not moved no lamb says when i go down the street the kids shout lay me lamb but they still come into the garden into my house it's a game they are not afraid of me why should they be because i am not afraid of them that's why not darry says did you get your leg blown off in the wall lamb says certainly how will you climb on a ladder and get the crab apples down asked derry lamb answers him that there's a lot of things i have learned to do and plenty of time for it years i take it steady you know lamb tells him that you know you must have heard time is a great healer it heals everything you know people get a lot many emotional and physical wounds somebody's relative die somebody's parents die somebody's children die somebody's siblings die right so some people have caught physical injuries some have caught you know their limbs cut due to one reason or the other but everybody survives in this world why because after a long time spans say after five to six years after 10 years they begin to you know learn how to live with that pain they begin a cus they begin to be accustomed with it they begin to get used to it right used to that pain so that's why hair lamb explains him that the people who would come to my garden my lamb's friends my friends means lamb's friends whosoever will come to his garden would not make fun of dairy if they make they will do it for one day or two right they will not ever make fun of him because he is often called by or you know kids often shout at him lamey lamb but they don't mean it that's just their game that's game means that's just their you know source of entertainment and they are not afraid of him because he is not afraid of those kids right daddy further asked mr lam that how he got his leg off was that a war lamb said yes and when darry asked him that how would you climb if you have only one original leg and one is made of tin how would you climb that ladder and you know pull down the crab apples which we you were talking to me in the beginning of our meeting lamb answers him that time is a great healer i take it steady means i do things very slowly i have learned that with the passage of time we can attain a lot many things right with the passage of time he has learned how to do it with one leg only with the passage of time he has learned how to develop friendship with people and how to take their cooperation i hope that's clear next darry says that if you fell and broke your neck you could lie on the grass and die right if you were on your own lamb said i could yeah you said i could help you if you want so right daddy says that you know dhari wanted to help mr lam been pulling down those apples because he has generated a feeling of humanity with mr lam but darry is afraid that his mother will beat him or his mother will be finding him darry says that my mother will want to know where i am it's three miles home across the fields i am fourteen but they still want to know where i am lamb says that people worry dary says people fuss over that right lamb says go back and tell them derry says it's three mile it means his home is much away from that garden and he needs to reach his home as soon as possible because his mother will be worried about him right so lamb says that it's a fine evening you have got legs see the positive side of mr lam he is trying to incite a positive feeling in derry by telling him that three miles is not a long distance for you why because you have two legs because you know the one who is having one leg for him three miles is a long long distance he can hardly cover three miles in a day but if somebody has got two legs three miles it's not a big distance right daddy says that only i once i got home they would never let me come back you know darry is telling the nature of his mother that if he reaches home once his mother will not allow him to come back to this garden lamb says that once you got home you would never let yourself come back lamb says that it's all about priorities you know mothers cannot be that strict with their children darry says you don't know you don't know what i could do lamb says no only you know that if i choose lamb added if you choose i don't know everything boy i can't tell you what to do now lamb has asked darry to decide it by himself that if he really wants to say stay with him or he wants to go home right so i hope that's clear up to now so that derry asks lamb that they tell me lamb asks that you have to agree darry says i don't know what i want i want something no one else has got or ever will have something just mine like this garden i don't know what is it lamb says you could find that daddy says how i can find that lamp says waiting watching listening sitting here or going there i'll have to see to the bees darry says those other people who come here do they talk to you ask you things lamb answers that some do asks and some don't i ask them i like to learn right darry asks i don't believe in them i don't think anybody ever comes you are here all by yourself and miserable and no one would know if you were alive or dead and nobody cares lamb says you think what you please darius is all right then tell me some of their names names tom dick or harry getting up if i am off down to the bees darry says i think you are deaf crazy man lamb says that's good excuse for what you don't talk since lamb says good excuse not to come back to my garden and you have got a burned up face and that's other people's excuse daddy says you are like others you like to say things like that if you don't feel sorry for my face you are frightened of it and if you are not frightened you think i am ugly as a devil am i i am a devil don't you shouts mr lam does not reply he has gone to the bees right derry quietly no you don't i like it here right pause and daddy gets up and shouts you know i'm going but i'll come back you see you wait i can run i haven't got a tin lag i'll be back darry runs off there is silence the sounds of the garden the chirping of birds once again begins you know in this page children dairy and lamb have a heated discussion mr lam intentionally you know catches get got on to the nerves of derry intentionally he you know talks to derry er things like that he has got a burnt face he looks so ugly and he is not attractive he has a lot of friends in his life mr lam and derry has no friends at all you know first he tries to motivate derry mr lam tries to motivate darry that he has caught a lot of blessings by counting his two legs two eyes two ears lips nose every sense two hands right he counts all the blessings only his face one side and that too partial is burnt nothing else but you know darry is not ready to do that compromise and listen to those people's thoughts or i may say those negative statements right but in the sense um i must say that being a 14 year old kid it would be actually you know frightening for anyone like derry to mind all those bad comments those negative comments and derry again in answer he speaks harsh words about mr lam that he has got a ten leg and you know he speaks about himself that he speaks about himself that i don't have a tiny leg like you i'll rush back to my home and i'll come here back to his garden silence is there bird sounds mr lamb he talks to himself that there my dears that's you seen too ah you know we all know i'll come back they never do though not them never do come back the garden noises fade you know this was all scene one when mr lamb ends the first scene by saying that many people promise that they will come back to me but and my garden but they never come they promise a lot many things but they never fulfill those promises see children very clearly it is seen that some old man has fallen probably this is mr lam and a boy is sitting there and that is probably derry right a letter is there crab apples are there probably he must be picking up those apples by himself and he has fallen from that uh object which he was using to take and you know ladder is also seen fallen here so something must has happened to mr lam right so see here he says that in scene 2 scene 2 is captured at darry's house you know darry's mother asks him you think i don't know about him you think i haven't heard things darry says you should not believe all you hear you know darry is speaking mr lam's language now darry's mother is rebuking darry for going to that carton she tells him that he pretends if she doesn't know where daddy has gone for that much time she knows everything but darry here tries to amend his mother's ideas by telling her that she should not believe everything she hears from other people mother says mother says that being told warned we have not lived here three months but i know that there is to know and you are not to go back there darry says what are you afraid of what do you think he is an old man with a tin leg and he lives in a huge house without curtains and has a garden also and i want to be there and sit and listen to things listen and look mother asked listen to what darry says be singing him talking him talking means darry expresses his desire to listen to mr lamb you know on the face of mr lam derry was becoming very irritable he was rebuking scalding mr lam for doing peculiar talks with him strange things with him but here in front of his mother he protests his mother only and tells her that mr lamb is a good man in fact he is a poor person with a tin leg right poor not financially weak but otherwise poor means helpless hair right he is a helpless man without one leg and he is a kind man i want to listen to him so mother says and what he has to got to say to you mother daddy's mother asks him that what talks did you share did you share with that old man mr lam darry answers things that matter things that matter means all the things that matter in this life things nobody else has ever said things i want to think about mother asked then you stay there and do your thinking you are best off here mother asks him to go out of the house and talk to so called mr lam only and darry says i hate it there mother you can't help the things you say i forgive you it's bound to make you feel bad things and say them i don't blame you darry says it's got nothing to do with my face and what i look like i don't care about that and it is not important it's what i think and feel and what i want to see and find out here and here and i am going back there only to help him with the crab apples only to look at things and listen but i am going mother asks him to stop there darry says no because if i don't go back there i'll never go anywhere in this world the door slams you know he shuts the door loudly darry runs panting you know wanting and i want the world i wanted i wanted the sound of painting fades it means darry leaves his home informing his mother that he wants to visit mr lam because he wanted to help him in the task of you know pulling those apples those crab apples so that the you know he could utilize them for making further products so that's why he wanted mr lam to successfully make jellies and wanted to help him anyway scene third mr lam's garden again you know in scene one also mr lam's garden was there in scene two darry's house was shown in scene three again mr lam's garden garden sounds were there the noise of a branch shifting apple something down the branch shifting again lamb says teddy that's cotted got it that's it more apples fall again that said a creek a crash you know creek here means a breaking sound a crashing sound was there the ladder on which mr lam was climbing it falls back lamp also falls with it a thumb it means again a sound was there the branch swishes back creaks then silence darry opens the garden gate still painting you know darry was panting he was out with you know that strange feeling that yes he has won the world in fact he is going to win it there he says you see you see i came back you said i won't and they say but i came back i wanted to be here with you he stops dead silence mr lam mr lam you have dash dash he runs through the grass stops kneels nails you know he bends down mr lamb it's all right you fell i am here mr lam it's all right but you know mr lam never answers in fact mr lam has fallen from that ladder while pulling those crab apples all alone because he must not be aware that darry would be coming to help him i came back lamey lam i did come back larry daddy begins to weep you know lamp that the person has died because he fell from that letter right you know such a peculiar thing is shown that how a friendship between the two persons developed while they both were having different kinds of tastes they both were having entirely different nature and how the two intermingled how the two attracted each other's attention and you know how successfully that old man mr lamb changed the mentality of derry towards this world derry was earlier not able to you know manage his mind up to the level of making friendships with other people but now derry is the person derry is the child who comes back hurriedly avoiding his mother's warnings right repeatedly his mother warned him not to go there and meet mr lam in his garden in fact darry protested his mother and explained to her that what will whatever relief he has received in the garden of mr lamb is so priceless darry has actually understood the real meaning of life by meeting mr lam mr lam makes him understand the basic necessities of life are being fulfilled that he has got so many blessings he has two ears two eyes two legs lips nose everything everything in working right he can do wonders mr lam motivates him incites him in such a manner that he can do much better things than other normal people in fact he motivated him to the fact that he is a normal person dairy is a normal person in fact he is very intelligent and he can do wonders in many fields so derry gets motivated and for the first time dairy feels a kind of intimate attachment with somebody that he cries a lot he begins to weep that he has lost such a good friend such a motivator such an inspirational friend in his life that he made just a few hours ago so that was all about the lesson on the face of it for the first time darry met a person who could speak face to face who told him that you know disabilities are always there in everybody some as i told you in between somebody has caught a broken leg somebody has caught one eye somebody has lost their relatives while others have lost their parents others have lost their siblings or children like you know problems are there in everybody's life we just should we should just get to know how to deal with those problems how to do away with those problems right so that's life life is not about probing problems life is about probing solutions to those problems life is not about discussing the problems again and again it's about coming up with the solution to those problems right so that was all about the lesson i hope you must have understood it or else please leave your comments uh leave your remarks in the comment section i'll be happy to take your queries thank you have a nice daygood morning children i hope you all are fine and safe at your homes so children today we will do chapter number six of our english reader book vistas entitled on the face of it on the face of it written by suzanne hill so children before reading this i would like to share with you that this is not actually a story or a novella or something like that this is a play right this is a play this play features an old man named lamb and a small boy named derry right an old man named mr lamb and a small boy whose name is derry right so the play features the meeting of both these the old man and the small boy in the garden of old man right old man has a garden and this play features the meeting between the two people right the old man strikes up a friendship with the boy who is very withdrawn and defiant right you know there are people who are introverts there are people who do not want to share who do not want to share who do not want to discuss their feelings and emotions who don't want to open their mind and hurt with others so the boy was of that nature the boy derry was of such kind of nature that he remains withdrawn and defiant right introvert type so what is the point what is the bond that unites the two persons in the play so let's read the text in order to get our answers right so see we are going to read scene one mr lam's garden there is the occasional sound of bird song and of tree leaves rustling you know the occasional sound means whenever wind blows or whenever this you know scene changes birds singing birds are there so tree leaves are producing rustling sound darry's footsteps are heard as he walks slowly and tentatively through the long glass right so darry that young boy his footsteps are hurt as he was walking slowly and you know tentatively in a tentative manner through the long grass that was there you know he pauses and then walks on again he comes round a screen of bushes so that when mr lam speaks to him he is close at hand and darry is startled you know derry startled he remained wonder struck that how can somebody appear right in front of me when he was not expecting anyone else in that garden right mind the apples so this is the dialect by mr lamb mind the apples darry says what who's that who's there mr lam says lamb is my name mind the apples crab apples those are wind falls in the long grass you could trip right darry says i there i thought this was an empty place i didn't know there was anybody here it means darry entered the garden of mr lamb unnoticed stealthily right he was not aware that the owner of the garden would be there inside it right that's why when derry just entered the garden he was walking through the grass mr lamb objected him and asked him mind these apples right why he asked derry to mind those apples because the apples were crab right so wind falls in the long grass was there so dairy could have been tripped right so that's why mr lamb warned derry at that time in an answer to his statement darry told him that he thought that was an empty space he was not aware that it would be a garden it would be an apple orchard right so he did not know that anybody would be there in this place so next page you know mr lam says that's all right i am here what are you afraid of boy that's all right it means mr lamb you know consoled darry that there is no need to be afraid of right he consoles him that he should not be afraid of anyone only mr lamb is there darry says i thought it was empty an empty house mr lamb says so it is since i am out here in the garden it is empty until i go back inside in the meantime i am out here and likely to stop a day like this beautiful day not a day to be indoors so you know from the statement it seems that mr lamb must be a nature lover right so that's why he begins to talk to derry and he asks him that in the meantime he was there in the garden because since this is his garden moreover that was a beautiful day that was not a day that is meant to stay indoors right you know some of the days are beautiful sometimes the sunlight is very low sunlight is very dim sometimes it's almost a rainy season rainy day sorry right so here mr lamb tries to incite a beautiful thing into the mind of that young boy dary that since that was a beautiful day that's why mr lamb is outside in the garden in order to enjoy the beauty of nature right next darry he was in a panic he says i have got to go it means darry expresses his desire to go back his go back to his home mr lam says not on my account i don't mind who comes into the garden the gate is always open only you climb the garden wall darry becomes angry you were watching me mr lam said i saw you but the gate is open all welcome you are welcome i sit here i like sitting darry said i would not come to steal anything right mr lam says no no the young lads still young lad still means the young boys often steal they scrum the apples and you are not so young darry says i just wanted to come in into the garden mr lam so did so you did here we are then darry says you don't know who i am and the man mr lamb answers that boy 13 or so darry in an angry tone says 14 but i have to go now goodbye mr lamb you know he says nothing to be afraid of just a garden just me but darry says that but i am not i am not afraid he gives a pause and says people are afraid of me mr lam said why should that be it means you know up to this conversation the writer suzanne gill has shown that derry is a kind of introvert as i told you in the introduction to the lesson as well derry was an introvert it means the people who do not want to get mixed with other people in the society right so here derry is showing a kind of resistance he is showing a kind of opposition to mr lamb expressing that he doesn't want to mix up with other people he was not aware that somebody would be there in the garden or if he if he had known that someone is there inside the garden he would have never come here that means he wanted to live alone darry wanted to live alone rome alone right so mr lam he tries to guess the age of derry and asking him that you seem to be a boy of 13 years of age so to that derry objected in a bit anger and corrected him that 14 right and asked him that he has to go from that place because he doesn't like the company of other people but mr lamb so being a kind fellow you know opposite in nature to derry opposite he was a kind fellow and he tried his level best to convince darry to stay in the garden because he is not going to do any harm to dairy right he is again and again consoling dairy that there is no harm to stay in this garden there is no need to be afraid of in this garden only he is there it means only mr lamb is there and he darry should not be afraid of anyone right so next he says derry answers that people are afraid of him when mr lamb asked him the reason derry answers that everyone is afraid of me it doesn't matter who they are or what they say or how they look how they pretend i know i can see mr lam see what daddy says what they think mr lam said what do you think then darry says you think here's a boy you look at me and then you see my face and you think that's bad that's a terrible thing that's the ugliest thing i ever saw you think poor boy but i am not not poor underneath you are afraid anybody would be i am when i look in the mirror and see it i am afraid of me you know children from this paragraph it is clear that dairy is not you know in a position to show his face to others probably he has got some scars probably he is very ugly probably he is very dark in complexion right his skin tone is very dark so something is wrong with his face and he has that inferiority complex of that particular problem right he has inferiority complex due to that particular lagging i would say right so he here asks mr lam that people are afraid of him it means people are afraid of derry why because darry has an ugly face like people think bad of him he even adds to that statement that whenever he looks at his own face in the mirror he himself gets afraid of him right so his face is so terrible so ugly right so that's the interpretation of derry about his face let's see what happens next come to the next page that is mr lam says no not the whole of you not of you darry says yes see children i hope you can feel the difference this is derry the 14 year old boy and this is mr lamb the owner of the garden i hope you can see the difference in his legs right so something would be there something common would come out of these two guys and this is larry right his face has something black on it some black scars some maybe permanent black imprints of something right so they are conversing here under a tree see darry says yes he is horrible mr lam says that later on when it's a bit cooler i'll get the ladder and the stick and pull down those crab apples they are ripe for it i make jelly it's a good time of year september look at them orange and golden that's magic fruit i often say but it's best picked and made into jelly you could give me a hand you know you could give me a hand means mr lamb is asking for daddy's help there because he wanted to take down those crab apples because you know they were ripe for it and he wanted mr lamb wanted to make jelly out of those crab apples right because that was the good time of the year september right and he was looking at those crab apples that were orange and golden in color right mr lamb called his apples magic fruit right so he often says that it is the best time to pick up those apples and jelly should be prepared for them and at the same time he is asking derry to help him see what darry says what have you changed the subject for derry what he is saying that why are you changing the talk we were talking about my face what is this people always do that why don't you ask me why do you uh sorry why do you what they all do and pretend is pretend it isn't true and isn't there in case i say you looking in mind and get upset i'll tell you don't ask me because you are afraid to mr lam you want me to ask say so then darry i don't like being with people any people so this line is the crux of this play i don't like being with people any people mr lam says i should say to look at it i should say you got burned in a fire now mr lamp when he is insisted by darry again and again he is asking derry that what happened to his face did it get burned in a fire because it was so blackened on one side as if like it had been set on fire by mistake or so right darry here you know he is showing irritation over the nice behavior of mr lam mr lam just changed the subject so that darry should not pay attention to his burned or that so-called blackened face that's why mr lam you know changed the topic of the discussion and he began to talk about his crab apples that he wanted to pull down and prepare jelly out of them but you know darry who was not at all willing to get mixed up with mr lamb or spend time with him he talks to mr lam in an angry voice and asked him that i know you think bad of me you think bad of my you know so called blackened and burnt face but you are not asking me the reason that how it got burned so mr lam didn't want to ask him because as i have always uh sorry already dropped new hint that there was a difference between the two legs of mr lam he himself had a limitation he himself had a shortcoming so that's why he better understands the mentality of people who have one or the other shortcoming right so that's why he didn't want to ask anything to dary but here darry incites him again and again to ask some question about his burnt face what darry answers when mr lamb asked him that what happened to your face did you get burn and fire so darry says not in a fire i got acid all down the side of my face and it burned it all way oh my god he says that acid split over his face and that's why it got burnt right it ate up my it ate my face up it ate me up and now it's like this and it won't ever be any different you know darry here informs mr lam that his face has been burned by the spilling of acid on its side and it has eaten that acid right that acid has eaten up his face eaten up his mind because he is totally depressed after his face has become so ugly and now that you know he feels like hell and he doesn't want to talk to anybody because it won't be ever it won't ever be any different he means to say that his nothing can be done of his face it means he must have gone to the doctors the surgeons for its checkup and they must have told derry that nothing can be amended his face can never be turned back right it can the original face can never be brought back and he has to live with this ugly face only that's why he is so much depressed and he hates meeting people because everybody talks about his face nobody talks to him on his face rather everybody talks about his face that it is burned right i hope you are able to understand it next page mr lam says no our dairy says are not you interested in my story mr lamb answers that you are a boy who came into the garden plenty do plenty do means a lot of people come come in my garden i am interested in nobody anything there is nothing god made that doesn't interest me look over there over beside the far wall what can you see darry says rubbish mr lamb says rubbish look boy look what do you see daddy says just grass right so he notices that grass was there right and stuff weeds weeds also mean that you know that extra plants or extra growth of grass that grows by itself without sowing any seed so dairy was not able to see anything positive in that where mr lamb appointed him to ask about the thing see what is the answer of mr lamb mr lamb further says that some call them weeds weed means useless plants right unwanted grass and plants if you like then a weed garden that there's fruit and there are flowers and trees and herbs all sorts all sorts means of all types but over there weeds i grow weeds there why is one green growing plant called weed and another flower where is the difference it's all life growing same as you and me you know he tells them that as weeds are considered unwanted plants unwanted grass so everything is there on the earth for a reason right mr lam being a matured and wise man he tries to make derry understand the fact that all sorts of human beings are there all sorts of it means all types of human beings are there a few people are lame some are blind while others are deaf and dumb right some have mental problems like a lot and lot of problems are there on this earth as he gives the example of those plants right so unwanted plants are there unwanted people are there but everybody's you know way of observation way of seeing them is different see darry says we are not the same when lamb you know compares darry with himself darry says that we are not same lamb says that i am old you are young you have got a burnt face i have got a tin leg you know one of his legs were made of tin see one of his legs was made of tin right he must have lost his leg due to one reason or the other he would explain here to derry in the upcoming paragraphs right so mr lamb tells darry that we are same right why the dif only differences are that i am old and you are young and dary has got a burnt face while mr lamb has got a thin leg right not important you are standing there i am sitting here where's the difference darry says why have you got a 10 leg you know now derry takes a bit of sympathy on mr lam and asked him that how he has got or why he has got that 10 leg it means where is the original leg lam says real one got blown off years back lamy lamb some kids say you know people especially kids often make fun of the disabilities of other people that's why you know children call him lamey lamb the one who is lame the one who has got one leg and his real leg got blown off many years ago right haven't you heard them you will lamey lamp it fits doesn't trouble me mr lamb also asked darry that haven't you heard children calling me by this name lamy lam lemme lam right but he also states to derry that he doesn't mind any such bad comments by the people in fact he doesn't pay attention to such comments made by kids right what darry says but you can put on trousers and cover it up and no one sees they don't have to notice and stir lamb says some do some don't they get tired of it in the end there's plenty of other things to stare at daddy like my face lamb says like crab apples or the weeds or a spider climbing upper silicon ladder or my tall sunflowers darry says other things lamb says that it's all relative beauty and the beast right darry says what that's supposed to be mean mr lamb you tell me darry says that you need not think they haven't all told me that fairy story before it's not what you look like it's what you are inside handsome is as handsome does beauty loved the monstrous beast for himself and when she kissed him he changed into a handsome prince only he wouldn't he would have stayed a monstrous beast i won't change in that way no you won't settle you know darry here tries to scratch his injuries you know not physically but you know in an emotional manner he says that you know that lamb can cover his leg lamb can wear full trousers and cover his leg wear shoes over that and hardly anybody would you know come to know that he has one such or such leg or he is lame or he is a normal person right so he can hide it but derry cannot hide his face all the time because people would even suspect that why is he hiding his face right so now what he's supposed to mean lamb asked him to tell him darry there explains that lamb doesn't need to think that all the people have told him fairy stories you know it's not like that how people look outwardly it is like the the ones who are handsome are handsome because they have done handsome deeds you know often it said that beauty is not external only it is inside it is inside our mind right so beautiful minds have more relevance than beautiful faces so here he gives an example that beauty loved the monstrous beast right that beauty is personified that beauty once loved a beast that was monstrous that was horrible in outlook right and beauty loved the beast for himself and when beauty kissed him the beast changed into a handsome prince right so only he would not he would have stayed a monstrous beast but he says that darry says that his face cannot be changed right he has to care you know pass his life with this bad face only you know children actually it seems that derry is too much depressed by the continuous comments of the people by the you know daily conversations of the people in which he often hears that his face has got burns his face is ugly he doesn't look handsome he doesn't look appealing so he must be fed up with all these conversations of the people right so further daddy says that no and no no one will kiss me ever only my mother and she kisses me on the other side of my face and i don't like my mother to kiss me why does it because she has to why should i like that i don't care if anybody ever kisses me right mr lam says but do you care if you never kiss them darry said what girls pretty girls long hair large eyes people you love darry says who would let me not one lamb says who can tell this darry's answer was i won't ever look different when i am as old as you i look the same i'll still only have half a face you know that's why the chapters title is on the face of it because face has been given so much importance by the people a kind of immaturity a kind of i would say narrow-mindedness is shown when dairy is emphasizing too much on his face but see why he should not do that he's just a kid of 14 years and he has seen such a misery in his life he has faced such a big problem in his life that he knows that nobody wants to kiss him because his face is so ugly nobody loves him because he looks so horrible even he shares with mr lam that only his mother kisses him and that too because she has to you know his mother also wants to express her love actually she doesn't want to kiss derry because of his ugly face but she kisses her son reason being so that darry should feel a bit of motivation and understanding darry should feel that his mother loves him only for the sake of making a show off darry's mother kisses him daily but she also kisses him on the other side of the face not on the burned side you know children these small things matter a lot actually i feel this place written on child psychology that how a child thinks how a child feels and what minor and major things can leave a big impact on the mind of a child right so see now lamp is tempting dairy that what would happen if he is kissed by somebody or what would happen if he gets a chance to kiss somebody darry becomes angry there and asks mr lam that nobody would like uh to make dairy like let derry kiss themselves right lamb tries to attract his attention by giving the mention of beautiful pretty girls right having long hair large eyes but you know dairy hair says that nobody would allow me to kiss the self right because he will not look any different i hope that's clear up to now next mr lam says so you will but the world will not the world has got a whole face and the world's there to be looked at darry says do you think this is the world this old garden mr lam says when i am here not the only one but the world as much as anywhere darry says does your leg hurt you mr lam tin leg sorry tin doesn't hurt boy darry says when it came off did it lamb said certainly now darry is asking a childish question that you know when some suppose somebody's leg breaks off somebody's arm or any body part breaks off obviously it will pain a lot at that moment see mr lam has got a new leg implanted he has arranged for a tin leg to support himself so that he should not be dependent upon anybody else for his survival in life right but you know again the question is that when the particular body part was blown off from the body was detached from the body or i would say when it was separated from the body due to any reason so obviously it would have hurt a lot at that time right so even one of our hair is plucked we get you know a bit frightened we feel a bit of pain at that time see if one finger is cut and pain of sorry a lot of pain is felt by the person and if leg is cut off of course the pain would be unbearable and mr lam here explains to derry that certainly he got hurt when his leg was blown off and darry says now i mean where is the where the tin stops at the top lamp says now and then in wet weather it doesn't signify you know lamb answers him that it hurts a bit now and in wet weather you know whenever there is rain it hurts often uh like whichever wounds are very deep those wounds pain in rainy season right because of the cold weather it doesn't signify means that doesn't matter much to mr lam dary says oh that something else they all say look at all those people who are in pain and brave and never cry and never complain and don't feel sorry for themselves lamb says i haven't said it derry says and think of all those people worse than you worse off than you means now a 14 years old young child is you know teaching an old man that you should not look at your weakness you should look at those people who don't even have the money to get a tin leg you should look at those people who have become permanently lame right he is you know kind of motivating mr lam further says that think you might have been blinded or born deaf or have to live in a wheelchair or be draft in your head and dribble you know lamb says that's all true and you know it darry says it won't make my face change do you know one day a woman went by me in the street i was at a bus stop and she was with another woman and she looked at me she said this she said dash dash whispered only i heard her she said look at that that's a terrible thing that's a face only a mother could live right so painfully darry shares this with mr lam that once he was encountered by two women right when he was probably going somewhere and at a bus at a bus stop one woman told another it means told her fellow women that see that how ugly face this boy is bearing you know his face is so ugly that only his mother can love him we have often seen that however wrong the children are like however big mistake a child commits mother is always on the side of the ward right so that's the situation the lady tells another lady her company that only his mother can love his face that he is so ugly no one else would be able to love him he is so horrible in appearance right mr lam says do you believe everything you hear then darry said it was cruel mr lam says maybe not meant as such just something said between them darry said oh i heard only i heard it i heard lamb said and is that the only thing you ever heard anyone say in your life daddy says no i have heard a lot of things lamb says so now you keep your ears shut darry you are peculiar peculiar means strange you say peculiar things you ask questions i don't understand darry is irritated again you know that al adolescence age his age is immature but he is trying to be very thoughtful even i if i simply say that he is trying to be a philosopher he tries to teach mr lam that mr lam should not have inferiority complex mr lam should not feel inferiorly complex because he is much better than many people in his life right so see now he is rebuking mr lam rebuking you know scalding dantna he is rebuking rebuking mr lam that mr lamb is a peculiar strange person and he talks of strange things which are out of dary's mind mr lam says i like to talk have company you don't have to answer questions you don't have to stop here all the gate is open darry says yes but you know lamb says i have a hive of bees behind those trees over there some hear bees and they say bees buzz but when you listen to bees for a long time they hum the hum means sung i hear them singing my bees daddy says but i like it hair i came in because i liked it when i looked over the wall lamb says you hadn't seen me you would not have come in darry says no lamb says no you are telling a lie darry it would have been trespassing mr lam says ah that's not why then darry added that i don't like being near people when they stare when i see them being afraid of me right so mr lam says that you could lock yourself up in a room and never leave it there was a man who did that he was afraid you see see children now they are discussing that on the fact that derry would not have entered the place if he had seen mr lam before coming to the garden why because darry doesn't want to get mixed up with people while in the previous tanja mr lamb has clearly expressed his desire of talking to other people getting mixed with them you know mr lamb used to live alone in that garden house and he doesn't have any regular company he is hungry of love he is hungry of caring and sharing but you know the person he meets that is derry derry is opposite to him in nature right so they are discussing that why they have you know they have been together at that place and darry here says that like he's not afraid of people and he's not afraid of being him he whatever face he is having he cannot change it of course but he has to live with it and he has accepted that fact right he has accepted him his fate so mr lam further says that you could lock yourself up in a lamb suggested him you know sarcastically he suggested him that he could lock himself up in a room and never leave it and you know there was a man who did that he was afraid you see of everything everything in this world a bus might run over him or a man might breathe deadly germs onto him or a donkey might kick him to death or lightning might strike him down or he might love a girl and the girl would leave him and he might slip on a banana skin and fall and people who saw him would laugh their heads off so he went into his room and locked the door and got into his bed and stayed there darry says forever you know a long story narrated by mr lam that once a man happened to face this this this and this thing it means a bus might run over him right he could have taken deadly germs into his mouth and a donkey might have kicked him and he would have been dead and you know lightning from sky must have strike him or you know a girl must be his beloved and the girl must have left him or he might have slipped on a banana peel banana skin and people would have laughed at him that's why he got frustrated and he logged himself in a room right and that's how you know he got into his bed and wanted to stay inside only didn't want to go out and meet people when darry asks forever lamb says for a while then what a picture fell off the wall onto his head and killed him darry laughs a lot you know this is the first instance that the writer shares that darry laughs mr slam says you see dary says but you still say peculiar things derry remarks that mr lamb talks about strange things mr lam peculiar to some extent darry says so what do you do all day darry asks a question to mr lam that what is his business throughout the day mr lamb answers that he sits in sunlight he reads books you know he says ah you thought that it was an empty house but inside its full books and other things second characteristic of mr lamp is shown that apart from being a lovable character being a lover of nature he shares that he is a book lover as well right he has plenty of books inside his house full dairy says but there aren't any curtains at the windows you know derry is of that suspicious nature pointing out each and everything every little thing in fact i would say right lamb answers that i am not fond of curtains it means lamb gives him answer that he doesn't like to have curtains in his house shutting things out shedding things in i like the light and darkness and the windows open to hear the wind darry says yes i like that when it's raining i like to hear on the hear it on the roof lamb says that so you are not lost are you not all together you do hear things you listen darry says that they talk about me downstairs when i am not there what will he ever do what's going to happen to him when we have gone right however will he get on in this world looking like that with that on his face that's why that's what they say right so see till now they are discussing that what particular objects mr lam has in his house mr lam has a lot in lot of books inside his house he doesn't like to have curtains because he loves light darry here discusses that he also loves that sound light but of the rainy season only and he wants to or he always goes on the roof of his house in order to enjoy that season right here mr lamb catches a nerve of derry and asks him in fact he wants to inform him that he is not altogether lost it means he can still revive from the inferiority complex of his burnt face and he can still live his life happily see what dary says that they talk about me downstairs darry tells mr lam that people do talk about me right people criticize my face when i am not there it means people criticize him in his absence not on his face see the title on the face of it but derry wanted children darry always wanted that whatever talk people do about him it should be done on his face on the face of it right he wanted to listen to the thoughts of people that what they think about him what they speak about him he really wanted to know what ill thoughts people have contained in their minds about terry what he says further what he will ever do what's going to happen to him when we have gone however will he get on in this world looking like that with that on his face that's what they say you know that's what people say about him that his face is very bad how is he going to live his life who will love him who will marry him what is going to happen to him in his later life how will he actually survive in this world this is what people's conversation is and of course children remember the age he is 14 years right less than your age so he is an immature fellow and that's why he always mind such things said by people such sarcastic remarks such bad remarks deeply hurt him right so i hope that's clear up to now mr lam further asks him lord boy it means he remembers god and says that boy you have got two arms two legs eyes and ears you have got a tongue and a brain now see mr lamb is counting the blessings that are bestowed upon dairy by god right you will get on the way you want like all the rest of the people and if you choose and set your mind to it you could you could get on better than all the rest how lamb says same way as i do darry says do you have any friends lamb says hundreds darry says but you live by yourself in that house it's a big house too you know now darry is asking that if you have a lots of friends hundreds of friends why do you live alone in this house and you two have a big house why don't you live with other people if you have friendship with them so lamb says that friends everywhere people come in everybody knows me the gate is always open lamb tells him that why he has a lot of friends because he always keeps his garden open for everyone people come to his garden enjoy themselves take the fruits steal them enjoy the honey right get a lot of things that's why they are pleased to visit his carton right they come and sit here and in the front of the fire in winter kids come for the apples and pears right he tells that children come to his garden for getting apple and beer right and for toffee you know toffee how to how come toffee in a garden he says that i make toffee with honey that mr lamb prepares candies in his garden with the help of honey anybody comes so have you darry says but i am not a friend you know after talking so much after talking so many things with mr lam still daddy is not ready to get mixed up still dairy is not feeling like developing some kind of attachment with mr lamp he interrupts his talk and tells him that i am not your friend lam says certainly you are so far as i am concerned what have you done to make me think you are not lamb asked him that how can you say that we are not friends we have become friends today darry says that you don't know me you don't know where i come from or even where my house is but my name is right mr lam here says that what should that signify why should that signify in fact do i have to write all your particulars down and put them in a filling box before you can be a friend i suppose no daddy says mr lam says that you could tell me your name if you choose and not if you did not darry tells him his name that derry it's only derek by but i hate that name derek so that's why i love if people call me terry right if i am your friend you don't have to be mine i choose that you know a very strange behavior very very strange behavior of a 14 year old boy who tells mr lam that if i have become your friend please don't become my friend you know friendship is mutual but here he says that don't become my friend and i wanted that that lamb says that certainly it means land obviously is a matured person and he agrees to whatever darry says right so lamb says that certainly darry says i might never come here again but you might never see me again and then i couldn't still be a friend why not lamb says daddy says that how could i you pass people in the street and you might even speak to them but you never see them again it doesn't mean they are french right mr lam says that doesn't mean they are enemies either it does you know now they are discussing the people who pass on in the street right you know derry asked mr lam that mr lam might be able to speak to those people right but he might never you know meet them again in their life same may be the case of derry dary has come into the garden for the first time and he may not visit it again ever in his life right so neither they are friends nor they are enemies darry says that they are just people that's all right everybody we see you know children we see a lot of people in our life whenever we are going by train to some other place we are going by bus even if we are going by our own vehicles so we see a lot of people even we meet a lot of people i would say but those are neither our friends nor our enemies right so that's the thing next is people are just never nothing never there are some people i hate and mr lam says that would do you more harm than any bottle of acid acid only burns your face dairy says only lamb says like a bomb only blew up my leg there is worse things that can happen you can burn yourself away inside darry says after i would come home one person said he would have been better off stopping in there in the hospital he would be better off with others like himself she thinks blind people only ought to be with other blind people and idiot boys with idiot boys only lamb says in people with no legs all together darry says that's right lamb says what kind of world that would be darry answers at least there would be there would be nobody to stare at you because you were not like them right so children here i am reminded of the dialogues of that movie chapak in which deepika padukone starred you know in that movie also this issue has been raised that why the acid attack victims work are kept or are supposed to you know stay together in some shelter homes why they are supposed to be together there because this world is full of cruel people this world is full of merciless people who often inflict bad and you know i must say illegal comments on the acid attack victims so because they feel insecure because they feel negative while living while surviving among us the normal people so that's why a plan is suggested that people with some disability should be kept together right why because if somebody meets the other person with the same disability they are a bit consoled and they don't have anybody to laugh at them nobody would make fun of one of them right so that's what lamb asked that lame people should also be kept with other lame persons darry says yes that's the idea right so see what happens here right he says darry says that at least there will be nobody to stare at you because they you weren't like them right so lamb says that other people you know you think you are you are just the same as all other people with burnt faces just by what you look everything is different everything is the same but everything is different itself a contradictory statement darry says how do you make all that out lamb says watching listening thinking right darry says that i would like a place like this a garden i would like a house with no curtains right daddy says that i would like a house with no curtains lamb says the gate is always open dary says but this is not mine lamb answers everything is yours if you want it what is mine is anybody's you know a great idea of sharing offered by mr lam he is offering that everything whatever is whatever belongs to mr lam now belongs to darry also right he is so much ready to share everything so he says that like so i could come here again darry asked him that if he could visit the garden of mr lamb again even if you were out i could come here it means lamb offers him certainly you might find others here of course right darry says oh it means darry is sad that if some other stranger would be there again they will make fun of daddy's face now mr lamb says well that need not stop you they need not mind daddy says i would stop them they would mind me when they saw it me they look at my face and run you know darry is so much depressed because people often shout after looking at his face because he has got a burnt face people often get afraid you know those scenes of shepard movie whenever people used to look at the face of deepika padukone that was burned by acid so they used to shout on the spot they used to you know cry they get afraid after looking at her face why because it had become so horrible so same as the case with derry i can very very relate these two personalities that people mind looking at him people you know run away after looking at his face they feel afraid of looking at him right next page mr lam says that they might be they might not be you would have to take the risk so would they right so darry says no you would you might have me and lose all your other friends because nobody wants to stay near me so if they can help it so mr lam says that i have not moved no lamb says when i go down the street the kids shout lay me lamb but they still come into the garden into my house it's a game they are not afraid of me why should they be because i am not afraid of them that's why not darry says did you get your leg blown off in the wall lamb says certainly how will you climb on a ladder and get the crab apples down asked derry lamb answers him that there's a lot of things i have learned to do and plenty of time for it years i take it steady you know lamb tells him that you know you must have heard time is a great healer it heals everything you know people get a lot many emotional and physical wounds somebody's relative die somebody's parents die somebody's children die somebody's siblings die right so some people have caught physical injuries some have caught you know their limbs cut due to one reason or the other but everybody survives in this world why because after a long time spans say after five to six years after 10 years they begin to you know learn how to live with that pain they begin a cus they begin to be accustomed with it they begin to get used to it right used to that pain so that's why hair lamb explains him that the people who would come to my garden my lamb's friends my friends means lamb's friends whosoever will come to his garden would not make fun of dairy if they make they will do it for one day or two right they will not ever make fun of him because he is often called by or you know kids often shout at him lamey lamb but they don't mean it that's just their game that's game means that's just their you know source of entertainment and they are not afraid of him because he is not afraid of those kids right daddy further asked mr lam that how he got his leg off was that a war lamb said yes and when darry asked him that how would you climb if you have only one original leg and one is made of tin how would you climb that ladder and you know pull down the crab apples which we you were talking to me in the beginning of our meeting lamb answers him that time is a great healer i take it steady means i do things very slowly i have learned that with the passage of time we can attain a lot many things right with the passage of time he has learned how to do it with one leg only with the passage of time he has learned how to develop friendship with people and how to take their cooperation i hope that's clear next darry says that if you fell and broke your neck you could lie on the grass and die right if you were on your own lamb said i could yeah you said i could help you if you want so right daddy says that you know dhari wanted to help mr lam been pulling down those apples because he has generated a feeling of humanity with mr lam but darry is afraid that his mother will beat him or his mother will be finding him darry says that my mother will want to know where i am it's three miles home across the fields i am fourteen but they still want to know where i am lamb says that people worry dary says people fuss over that right lamb says go back and tell them derry says it's three mile it means his home is much away from that garden and he needs to reach his home as soon as possible because his mother will be worried about him right so lamb says that it's a fine evening you have got legs see the positive side of mr lam he is trying to incite a positive feeling in derry by telling him that three miles is not a long distance for you why because you have two legs because you know the one who is having one leg for him three miles is a long long distance he can hardly cover three miles in a day but if somebody has got two legs three miles it's not a big distance right daddy says that only i once i got home they would never let me come back you know darry is telling the nature of his mother that if he reaches home once his mother will not allow him to come back to this garden lamb says that once you got home you would never let yourself come back lamb says that it's all about priorities you know mothers cannot be that strict with their children darry says you don't know you don't know what i could do lamb says no only you know that if i choose lamb added if you choose i don't know everything boy i can't tell you what to do now lamb has asked darry to decide it by himself that if he really wants to say stay with him or he wants to go home right so i hope that's clear up to now so that derry asks lamb that they tell me lamb asks that you have to agree darry says i don't know what i want i want something no one else has got or ever will have something just mine like this garden i don't know what is it lamb says you could find that daddy says how i can find that lamp says waiting watching listening sitting here or going there i'll have to see to the bees darry says those other people who come here do they talk to you ask you things lamb answers that some do asks and some don't i ask them i like to learn right darry asks i don't believe in them i don't think anybody ever comes you are here all by yourself and miserable and no one would know if you were alive or dead and nobody cares lamb says you think what you please darius is all right then tell me some of their names names tom dick or harry getting up if i am off down to the bees darry says i think you are deaf crazy man lamb says that's good excuse for what you don't talk since lamb says good excuse not to come back to my garden and you have got a burned up face and that's other people's excuse daddy says you are like others you like to say things like that if you don't feel sorry for my face you are frightened of it and if you are not frightened you think i am ugly as a devil am i i am a devil don't you shouts mr lam does not reply he has gone to the bees right derry quietly no you don't i like it here right pause and daddy gets up and shouts you know i'm going but i'll come back you see you wait i can run i haven't got a tin lag i'll be back darry runs off there is silence the sounds of the garden the chirping of birds once again begins you know in this page children dairy and lamb have a heated discussion mr lam intentionally you know catches get got on to the nerves of derry intentionally he you know talks to derry er things like that he has got a burnt face he looks so ugly and he is not attractive he has a lot of friends in his life mr lam and derry has no friends at all you know first he tries to motivate derry mr lam tries to motivate darry that he has caught a lot of blessings by counting his two legs two eyes two ears lips nose every sense two hands right he counts all the blessings only his face one side and that too partial is burnt nothing else but you know darry is not ready to do that compromise and listen to those people's thoughts or i may say those negative statements right but in the sense um i must say that being a 14 year old kid it would be actually you know frightening for anyone like derry to mind all those bad comments those negative comments and derry again in answer he speaks harsh words about mr lam that he has got a ten leg and you know he speaks about himself that he speaks about himself that i don't have a tiny leg like you i'll rush back to my home and i'll come here back to his garden silence is there bird sounds mr lamb he talks to himself that there my dears that's you seen too ah you know we all know i'll come back they never do though not them never do come back the garden noises fade you know this was all scene one when mr lamb ends the first scene by saying that many people promise that they will come back to me but and my garden but they never come they promise a lot many things but they never fulfill those promises see children very clearly it is seen that some old man has fallen probably this is mr lam and a boy is sitting there and that is probably derry right a letter is there crab apples are there probably he must be picking up those apples by himself and he has fallen from that uh object which he was using to take and you know ladder is also seen fallen here so something must has happened to mr lam right so see here he says that in scene 2 scene 2 is captured at darry's house you know darry's mother asks him you think i don't know about him you think i haven't heard things darry says you should not believe all you hear you know darry is speaking mr lam's language now darry's mother is rebuking darry for going to that carton she tells him that he pretends if she doesn't know where daddy has gone for that much time she knows everything but darry here tries to amend his mother's ideas by telling her that she should not believe everything she hears from other people mother says mother says that being told warned we have not lived here three months but i know that there is to know and you are not to go back there darry says what are you afraid of what do you think he is an old man with a tin leg and he lives in a huge house without curtains and has a garden also and i want to be there and sit and listen to things listen and look mother asked listen to what darry says be singing him talking him talking means darry expresses his desire to listen to mr lamb you know on the face of mr lam derry was becoming very irritable he was rebuking scalding mr lam for doing peculiar talks with him strange things with him but here in front of his mother he protests his mother only and tells her that mr lamb is a good man in fact he is a poor person with a tin leg right poor not financially weak but otherwise poor means helpless hair right he is a helpless man without one leg and he is a kind man i want to listen to him so mother says and what he has to got to say to you mother daddy's mother asks him that what talks did you share did you share with that old man mr lam darry answers things that matter things that matter means all the things that matter in this life things nobody else has ever said things i want to think about mother asked then you stay there and do your thinking you are best off here mother asks him to go out of the house and talk to so called mr lam only and darry says i hate it there mother you can't help the things you say i forgive you it's bound to make you feel bad things and say them i don't blame you darry says it's got nothing to do with my face and what i look like i don't care about that and it is not important it's what i think and feel and what i want to see and find out here and here and i am going back there only to help him with the crab apples only to look at things and listen but i am going mother asks him to stop there darry says no because if i don't go back there i'll never go anywhere in this world the door slams you know he shuts the door loudly darry runs panting you know wanting and i want the world i wanted i wanted the sound of painting fades it means darry leaves his home informing his mother that he wants to visit mr lam because he wanted to help him in the task of you know pulling those apples those crab apples so that the you know he could utilize them for making further products so that's why he wanted mr lam to successfully make jellies and wanted to help him anyway scene third mr lam's garden again you know in scene one also mr lam's garden was there in scene two darry's house was shown in scene three again mr lam's garden garden sounds were there the noise of a branch shifting apple something down the branch shifting again lamb says teddy that's cotted got it that's it more apples fall again that said a creek a crash you know creek here means a breaking sound a crashing sound was there the ladder on which mr lam was climbing it falls back lamp also falls with it a thumb it means again a sound was there the branch swishes back creaks then silence darry opens the garden gate still painting you know darry was panting he was out with you know that strange feeling that yes he has won the world in fact he is going to win it there he says you see you see i came back you said i won't and they say but i came back i wanted to be here with you he stops dead silence mr lam mr lam you have dash dash he runs through the grass stops kneels nails you know he bends down mr lamb it's all right you fell i am here mr lam it's all right but you know mr lam never answers in fact mr lam has fallen from that ladder while pulling those crab apples all alone because he must not be aware that darry would be coming to help him i came back lamey lam i did come back larry daddy begins to weep you know lamp that the person has died because he fell from that letter right you know such a peculiar thing is shown that how a friendship between the two persons developed while they both were having different kinds of tastes they both were having entirely different nature and how the two intermingled how the two attracted each other's attention and you know how successfully that old man mr lamb changed the mentality of derry towards this world derry was earlier not able to you know manage his mind up to the level of making friendships with other people but now derry is the person derry is the child who comes back hurriedly avoiding his mother's warnings right repeatedly his mother warned him not to go there and meet mr lam in his garden in fact darry protested his mother and explained to her that what will whatever relief he has received in the garden of mr lamb is so priceless darry has actually understood the real meaning of life by meeting mr lam mr lam makes him understand the basic necessities of life are being fulfilled that he has got so many blessings he has two ears two eyes two legs lips nose everything everything in working right he can do wonders mr lam motivates him incites him in such a manner that he can do much better things than other normal people in fact he motivated him to the fact that he is a normal person dairy is a normal person in fact he is very intelligent and he can do wonders in many fields so derry gets motivated and for the first time dairy feels a kind of intimate attachment with somebody that he cries a lot he begins to weep that he has lost such a good friend such a motivator such an inspirational friend in his life that he made just a few hours ago so that was all about the lesson on the face of it for the first time darry met a person who could speak face to face who told him that you know disabilities are always there in everybody some as i told you in between somebody has caught a broken leg somebody has caught one eye somebody has lost their relatives while others have lost their parents others have lost their siblings or children like you know problems are there in everybody's life we just should we should just get to know how to deal with those problems how to do away with those problems right so that's life life is not about probing problems life is about probing solutions to those problems life is not about discussing the problems again and again it's about coming up with the solution to those problems right so that was all about the lesson i hope you must have understood it or else please leave your comments uh leave your remarks in the comment section i'll be happy to take your queries thank you have a nice day\n"
