Introduction to Palm Web OS 1.4
Hello everyone, I'm John Ringer from Techno Buffalo, and welcome back to my channel. Over the weekend, Palm finally unleashed Web OS 1.4 to their Pre and Pixie, as well as Pre Plus variant devices. This update brings a slew of new features that we'll be exploring in this video. Before we dive into the details, I want to mention that Flash will be coming to the Pre and Pre Plus devices, but not the Pixie devices. It's currently available for download from Palm's app store or application market, and it will be released very soon.
Download and Installation of Web OS 1.4
The update was an over-the-air download that took approximately 45 minutes to complete. I'll go through a demonstration of the process so you can see what it looks like. First, let me launch the camera app to show you one of the other new changes to Web OS 1.4. As you can see, there's a little icon in the upper right-hand corner that shows up when you launch a program. This is a feature that was previously absent from Web OS.
Launching the Camera App
Let me go ahead and push that button to test it out. You can record video as you would on any other device. I'll demonstrate this by recording a short clip. As you can see, the interface looks very similar to what we had before, except now in the upper right-hand corner there is a little camcorder button. This feature allows you to record video, and it's something that was previously not available on Web OS.
Video Recording Capabilities
Now, let me show you some of the cool capabilities of this new feature. You can edit and upload your videos to your favorite social media site. I'll launch a video here and demonstrate how this works. As you can see, there's an icon that shows up when you launch programs, which wasn't there before. It just took a couple of minutes to get used to.
Editing and Uploading Videos
Let me show you some of the things that you can do with this feature. You can use OneTouch editing by hitting the button in the bottom right-hand corner. You can sort of drag and trim around to clip your video as you'd like. If you decide that you want to clip it, you can hit the check mark and it will save the original copy and create a new version.
Uploading Videos
You also have the option to upload your videos directly to YouTube, share via email, or share via SMS. This is a very convenient feature that makes it easy to share your videos with others. Aside from video capabilities, this update is available on all Palm devices.
Other Changes in Web OS 1.4
Let me show you some of the other changes that are part of Web OS 1.4. I'll launch email to demonstrate some of these new features. One of the biggest changes is the ability to sort your inbox by date, sender, and subject. This makes it much easier to manage your emails, as you can now quickly search for a particular item without having to scroll through your entire inbox.
Custom Notifications
Another feature that's been added is custom notifications. You can forward text messages to email, which is a very nice touch. You can also press and hold on the pound button to get more call options. Let me see if I can demonstrate this by pressing and holding on the pound button. Unfortunately, it seems like this feature isn't working as expected.
Flash 10 Beta Support
Web OS 1.4 will now support Flash 10 beta, which will be available in Palm's app catalog. However, it's not currently available for download, and it won't be released for Pixie owners. It does seem to improve performance and battery life, although I haven't had a chance to test it long enough to make any definitive judgments.
Conclusion
That's all for this video on Web OS 1.4. If you're a Palm owner and have already downloaded the update, I encourage you to try out these new features and see if there are any bugs that come up with it. Don't forget to like and subscribe for more content from Techno Buffalo, and I'll catch you in the next video.
Testing Video Recording Capabilities
As a final test, let me show you how the video recording capabilities perform in low light situations. It's relatively dark here, so let's add some light and see if it makes a difference. Ah, yes, that helps a bit. Now, let me record a short clip to demonstrate this feature.
