Palm Pre & Pixi New Features (WebOS 1.4 Demo)

Introduction to Palm Web OS 1.4

Hello everyone, I'm John Ringer from Techno Buffalo, and welcome back to my channel. Over the weekend, Palm finally unleashed Web OS 1.4 to their Pre and Pixie, as well as Pre Plus variant devices. This update brings a slew of new features that we'll be exploring in this video. Before we dive into the details, I want to mention that Flash will be coming to the Pre and Pre Plus devices, but not the Pixie devices. It's currently available for download from Palm's app store or application market, and it will be released very soon.

Download and Installation of Web OS 1.4

The update was an over-the-air download that took approximately 45 minutes to complete. I'll go through a demonstration of the process so you can see what it looks like. First, let me launch the camera app to show you one of the other new changes to Web OS 1.4. As you can see, there's a little icon in the upper right-hand corner that shows up when you launch a program. This is a feature that was previously absent from Web OS.

Launching the Camera App

Let me go ahead and push that button to test it out. You can record video as you would on any other device. I'll demonstrate this by recording a short clip. As you can see, the interface looks very similar to what we had before, except now in the upper right-hand corner there is a little camcorder button. This feature allows you to record video, and it's something that was previously not available on Web OS.

Video Recording Capabilities

Now, let me show you some of the cool capabilities of this new feature. You can edit and upload your videos to your favorite social media site. I'll launch a video here and demonstrate how this works. As you can see, there's an icon that shows up when you launch programs, which wasn't there before. It just took a couple of minutes to get used to.

Editing and Uploading Videos

Let me show you some of the things that you can do with this feature. You can use OneTouch editing by hitting the button in the bottom right-hand corner. You can sort of drag and trim around to clip your video as you'd like. If you decide that you want to clip it, you can hit the check mark and it will save the original copy and create a new version.

Uploading Videos

You also have the option to upload your videos directly to YouTube, share via email, or share via SMS. This is a very convenient feature that makes it easy to share your videos with others. Aside from video capabilities, this update is available on all Palm devices.

Other Changes in Web OS 1.4

Let me show you some of the other changes that are part of Web OS 1.4. I'll launch email to demonstrate some of these new features. One of the biggest changes is the ability to sort your inbox by date, sender, and subject. This makes it much easier to manage your emails, as you can now quickly search for a particular item without having to scroll through your entire inbox.

Custom Notifications

Another feature that's been added is custom notifications. You can forward text messages to email, which is a very nice touch. You can also press and hold on the pound button to get more call options. Let me see if I can demonstrate this by pressing and holding on the pound button. Unfortunately, it seems like this feature isn't working as expected.

Flash 10 Beta Support

Web OS 1.4 will now support Flash 10 beta, which will be available in Palm's app catalog. However, it's not currently available for download, and it won't be released for Pixie owners. It does seem to improve performance and battery life, although I haven't had a chance to test it long enough to make any definitive judgments.

Conclusion

That's all for this video on Web OS 1.4. If you're a Palm owner and have already downloaded the update, I encourage you to try out these new features and see if there are any bugs that come up with it. Don't forget to like and subscribe for more content from Techno Buffalo, and I'll catch you in the next video.

Testing Video Recording Capabilities

As a final test, let me show you how the video recording capabilities perform in low light situations. It's relatively dark here, so let's add some light and see if it makes a difference. Ah, yes, that helps a bit. Now, let me record a short clip to demonstrate this feature.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enwhat's up everyone John ringer from techno Buffalo here over the weekend Palm finally Unleashed web OS 1.4 to their pre and pixie and their plus variant devices so that'll be everyone who's got a web OS phone there is slew of new features I want to show you sort of some of the the biggest ones and show you what you can expect on web OS 1.4 before I get started the one thing I want to mention is that flash is coming to the pre and Pre Plus not the pixie devices uh it's not available right now with OS 1.4 it will be a download from Palm's uh app store or their application market something to keep in mind and they are saying that it will be coming very soon so it'll be another nice augmentation to a pretty solid platform this was an overthe a download that took from download to install and unpacking probably about 45 minutes in total so 1.4 brought video recording capabilities to Palm devices let me show you what that looks like go ahead and launch the camera you also be able to see one of the other new changes to 1.42 you got a little icon that shows up there when it launches the program to show you what you're launching so the interface here looks very similar to what we had before except now in the upper right hand corner there is a little camcorder button go ahead and push that and at the end of this video I will put a demonstration as to what the video capture capability looks like on the pal pre and the Palm Prix plus you go ahead and just hit record you can record sort of as you would on any other device now you also get some cool capabilities as far as editing that may look a bit familiar let me show you what those look like as well and you can edit and actually OneTouch upload to your favorite social media site you go ahead and launch videos here here's a video that I recorded yesterday while I was playing around with this and again you can see that little icon shows up now when you launch programs that was was never there before it just took a couple minutes so here is my video roll here's one that I filmed go ahead and launch that right there you can see what playback looks like as well it's pretty standard recing a video on the pr checking out the quality so again I'll put a video of how this works and what the quality looks like at the end so you can be the judge uh for yourself let me show you some of the things that you can do with this though so you can do some OneTouch editing hit that button in the bottom right hand corner and you can sort of drag and trim around to clip the video as you'd like we may have seen this before on let's say another phone if you decide that you want to clip it you go ah hit the check mark and it doesn't delete your original copy it actually saves the original one and saves the a new version as well so we'll go ahead and let's say we want to accept that now you can also upload it so go ahead and hit that button in the upper right hand corner share upload to Youtube share via email or share Via SMS are some of your options that you now have so you can upload those uh directly so aside from the video capabilities and this is now on all Palm devices let me show you some of the other changes that you'll have go ahead and throw this card away let's go ahead and launch email this is where some of the other changes reside or some of the bigger changes that I found most useful so go ahead and launch the inbox you can now sort this by date by sender and by subject which is an option that wasn't there before which makes it a lot easier for managing your mail it was very hard to sort of search for a particular item that maybe wasn't set in the past day or two you had to scroll through and scroll through and scroll through to find it this is a very welcome addition um also here now is the ability to have the phone recognized phone numbers be able to dial it right from an email as a hot link that wasn't there before uh something new that was finally just added to webos device and I'll show you right what it means I got an email here that I sent and I'm not sure which format for putting in numbers work so I put in a whole bunch here and you can see that they all come up hotlink I go ahead and just click one of them and it should launch the dialer and there we go and now I can go ahead and call it and we would be off so there are slew of other changes here as well uh some of them which I'm not all going to demonstrate uh they include custom notifications now for calendar phone book transfer uh performance enhancements within the phone and calendar um you can allow custom alert sounds like I said you can forward text messages to email which is quite nice uh you can press and hold on the pound button to get more call options let's see what that looks like actually press and hold do not appear to be doing anything it dialed a p that's a little bit weird go back try it again still dial the pie so that was one of the updates that was supposed to be there clearly is not the case uh there are slew of other one uh this again this will support uh flash 10 beta it'll be available in Palm's app catalog but it is not available today and that won't be out for pix the owners it's just going to be for the pre and Pre Plus folks out there so supposedly this includes performance and battery life and I haven't had it long enough to be a judge of that uh it does seem a bit more Zippy though I will tell you that much anyway guys hope you enjoyed this very quick overview of palm webos 1.4 for those of you Palm owners out there if you already gotten your download on are you waiting to sort of see if there are any bugs that come out with it anyway guys I'm John ringer from techno Buffalo and I will see you in the next video so this is a test of the video recording capabilities on the Palm Pre Plus and the web OS 1.4 platform this is relatively low light situations here go Ahad and see how that looks we got a video of Mercedes go ahead and add some light and see if that helps so a little bit we'll keep moving along for\n"
