The Secret Feature of the iPhone 10: Dark Mode
As I've been reading about the iPhone 10, I have to say that I'm really loving it. It's coming onto me, and I'm excited to share with you all a secret feature that this phone has. The feature is called dark mode, and what it does is convert your iPhone's color screen into a full black and white display. This is especially cool because the iPhone 10 is the first iPhone to have an OLED screen, which means that when black pixels are showing up on the screen, the phone's battery doesn't have to work as hard. In fact, it doesn't even need to put any power towards them to get that black pixel to show up.
This means that if the screen is black and white, in theory, this phone should be able to last for a week or more. However, no one has really tested it yet, so I actually want to try this out and see what happens. If you guys want to try this at home and let me know in the comments if you do, hit me up over on Instagram, that's where everyone's hanging out. The Insta-story is always popping. So, here's what we're going to do. We have two iPhones, one on my left that's going to be our constant, and one on my right that we're going to change.
The phone on my left has the same settings as the iPhone you probably use every day. The display and brightness is at 75% or around there, true tone flash is off, and sleep-wake is set to never. Pretty much just the basic settings you find on an iPhone 10. On the other hand, we're going to bump up the display and brightness on the phone on my right to around 75%, keep these as accurate and scientific as possible, turn off true tone flash, and auto-lock set to never. And here's where things get funky. This is where you get dark mode.
Dark mode reminds me of when I made my iPhone 6 last a week by velcroing a battery pack to the back of my phone. It was so funny and so insane. The challenge now begins. What we're hoping is that with software, we can pretty much achieve this with secret dark mode and get you double or triple your battery life. You just need a black and white phone. Let's actually get into this.
To enable this, you need to hop into settings, then go to general, scroll all the way to "Accessibility" and hit this new button called display accommodations. This is where things start to get really cool on the iPhone 10. On some of the older iPhones, you can try this on, but on the iPhone 10 that's really where the pizazz starts to show. You're going to go into invert colors. With smart invert, if you turn that on, it just reverses the colors of the display. Classic invert is the real OG, that's the one you want here.
So we'll turn that on and scroll back and hit color filters. This is where you get the mode known as gray scale, which is kinda the scientific term. You need to turn that on so we can see the gray scale option is checked. Right here, we have an iPhone 10, fully black and white. When I swipe down to the bottom, you can see not only are the colors inverted, but it's pretty much a black and white screen.
Now that we've enabled dark mode on our test phone, let's see how it does in real-world usage. We'll be comparing it to the same settings on my other iPhone, which is still using its original display settings. We'll be keeping an eye on both phones and checking in with you guys every hour or so to let you know what percent of battery life we have left.

accessibilityand then hit this new button on herecalled display accommodations. You can try this on someof the older iPhonesbut on the iPhone 10, that'sreally where the pizazzstarts to show.So you're gonna go into invert colors. Now with smart invert,if you turn that on,it just reverses thecolors of the display.Classic invert is the real OG,that's the one you want here.So we'll turn that on,if I can even do it.Struggling over here. Now we're gonna scroll backand we're gonna hit color filters. This is where you get themode known as gray scale, that's kinda the scientific term. You need to turn that on sowe'll turn on color filtersand then you can see thegray scale option is checked.Right here, we have an iPhone10, fully black and white. So when I swipe down to the bottom, you can see not got a giant sea turtlevideo, it's 12 hours long.We have a timer in the middleso we're gonna hit start on hereand pretty much just seewhich iPhone dies first. Now you guys probably wannaknow what percent battery lifewe're starting at witheach of these iPhone 10s.So, before we play the video, the colored iPhone 10 is at 100%.And then the black andwhite iPhone's also at 100%.So let's get the giant sea turtle videocooking up right here.Bam.Shout out to you Cat Trumpet, you made this one happen. And just like that, we'reabout to see if the secretdark mode on the iPhone10 makes it last be super boring. So like every hour or so,I'll let you guys knowwhat percent we're at.Let's check out the colored iPhone first. My guess is this thingsgotta be at like 70% so farand this is gonna be at like 90.You're losing a lot, you're losing the colors. That's the whole pointof the secret dark mode.Let's peep this real quick.Whoa, alright, we're at78% on the colored phone. And on the black and white phone, 79%.Wow, I was not expecting to be this close.Let's get back to the sea turtles. We've got a sting ray on here now.Burger King hits the spotlate at night, I tell ya.So we're just coming upon hour two right now.I had to get some food, I'm so hungry.Matt and I are pretty muchjust like watching paint drywith these phones. Now you might be saying to yourself like,\"Why aren't the videos like synced up?\"Because our wifi in this officeis the quality of a potato,it is worse.Let me know in the commentsif you guys have better wifi.Everyone should be saying,\"I have better wifi,\"it's that bad.Basically the phone on theleft started buffering, the one on the right was doing it's thing. So, it's moved along.Let's see what the battery life's like.So we're gonna check thecolored iPhone first.Wow, are you serious?54%.This thing has to be at like 60,there's no way it's this close. Here we go.Are you kidding me?!54% on the dark,I don't even know what's on my fingersat this point.(beep)That's what I'm sayingall the time.(beep)54% on the black and white iPhone,54% on the colored iPhone. It's looking like maybedark mode doesn't showthe best results whenyou're watching sea turtlesswim in the ocean.Coming up on hour three right nowand I gotta say, I did notimagine watching paint drybeing as boring as this is.- We can't just sit here and do nothing.- But let's check thepercentages on the phone.I don't even know whatthe turtles are doing.I think they made friendsnow with the fish.- Fish are friends, not food.- I am really, really relaxed, like(energetic music)but let's check the percentageon the colored iPhone.31%, interesting with the color display.Okay, alright.30%.Okay, I think this is the first timethe black and whiteiPhone is actually lowerthan the colored iPhone.Kinda interesting consideringthis is a black and whiteinverted display.I really thought darkmode would have a lot moreof an effect on the batterylife than what we're seeingbut hey, we got 30% left.Let's continue with the paint drying.- I thinkeverybody needs a friendso we're gonna give him one right here.- At least hopefully make friends, get in a fight, like world starters.(soft music)We're coming up at threeand a half hours here, both low power indicators have shown up solow battery on the iPhonein black and white, low battery on the one in color.I wanna see how low in battery,I mean I think these poppedup like a few minutes agobut time is of theessence when the turtlesare doing their thing. And for some reason, itstopped on this phone.Like when the low batterynotification popped up,it for some reasonstopped the YouTube videoso let's just check this out.18% there,I feel like it's gonna be less.I feel like this is gonna be like 16%.17%, still less.I think it's pretty safe to say, dark mode is not cutting it.Go ahead and like theInstagram photo of this videoif you guys have made it this farand hey, if we get enoughlikes on the photo, let's try to shoot for like 5K likes,I'm gonna try this out a little more thanjust one battery run and hey,if that doesn't work to getmy iPhone to last a week,I'm gonna strap anotherbattery back to my iPhone 10and we're gonna do it old school style.(soft music)About to hit hour four, Ithink the gray scaled iPhoneis gonna die way before the colored one. It's interesting.Let's actually see what percent we're at.11%, this thing got the 10% notification.8%, wow, I'm actually really shocked.I've just been plowingthrough David's vlogs, just trying to get through this. It's been tough.Friends have been made, friends have been lost,in this 12 hour adventureof the secret dark modeon the iPhone 10.(soft music)Coming up on four anda half hours right now,we're really powering through.Let's see what the fullcolor iPhone's at, 4%.This one's gotta be at 1%, there's no way.Called it, 1% on the dark mode iPhone.Might be a secret feature,I think the only real wayto tell if it actuallymakes a difference is usingit like throughout the week.Seeing if it makes youriPhone last more than a day.I'm totally surprised, I was not expectingthe black and white iPhonewith settings that literallycripple it to die faster.Shout out to all the turtle gang, appreciate you for keeping me entertainedfor four and a half hours.(cheering)- We're awesome.- Bodacious.- Bitchin'.- Just like that, theblack and white iPhone
