iPhone 15 Pro _ Pro Max Impressions - The Good & The Bad...
Faster Video Streaming and Graphics Chip Redesign: A New Era for iPhone
One of the most significant upgrades in the new iPhone 15 series is the redesign of the graphics chip, which now supports hardware ray tracing in games like Diablo 4. This feature was previously exclusive to flagship Android rivals, and its inclusion on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max marks a major milestone for Apple's gaming capabilities. With the improved graphics processing unit (GPU), gamers can expect smoother gameplay and more realistic visuals.
The revamped graphics chip is also expected to enhance performance in other areas, such as graphics rendering and physics simulations. This upgrade should provide a noticeable boost in overall system performance, making the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max more competitive with high-end Android devices. The improved hardware capabilities will be particularly beneficial for gamers who demand fast load times, smooth gameplay, and realistic graphics.
The iPhone 15 series also features a new display technology that enables faster video streaming. While this feature is not exclusive to the Pro models, it's still disappointing that the regular iPhone 15 and 15 Plus do not get the high-refresh-rate display upgrade. The absence of 60Hz refresh on these devices is puzzling, given their premium pricing. It would have been more reasonable to expect faster charging, which was a notable omission from the previous generation.
Rumors about bigger batteries did not pan out, and there were no new efficiency claims for the improved chip. However, Apple has promised to work on improving battery health and longevity in future updates. The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max do feature a more efficient design, which should help reduce power consumption and increase overall battery life.
The camera is a significant upgrade in the iPhone 15 series, with an upgraded 48-megapixel main camera featuring a larger sensor. This improvement allows for higher-quality photos with better dynamic range and reduced noise. The camera app has also been improved, with enhanced smart HDR technology and better portrait mode capabilities. The new camera features are expected to make a noticeable difference in everyday photography.
One of the most exciting features in the iPhone 15 Pro is the new five times telephoto lens, exclusive to the Pro Max model. This lens offers an impressive range of 120 millimeters and features a larger sensor and wider F/2.8 aperture. The upgraded 3D sensor and optical image stabilization (OIS) ensure that the camera produces bright and stable images, even in low-light conditions.
The iPhone 15 Pro also introduces a new feature called "5x" mode, which allows users to tap on the one-times icon to crop in slightly and switch between different focal lengths. This ability is not available on the regular 15 Pro, but it's still a useful feature for those who want more flexibility when shooting with their iPhone.
The camera app has also been updated to support spatial video, Apple's new kind of 3D video that can be played back on upcoming Vision Pro headsets. This technology allows users to capture and view immersive, 3D content that simulates real-world environments. Spatial video is an exciting feature that could revolutionize the way we consume and interact with video content.
In addition to the camera upgrades, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max also support Wi-Fi 6E and a second-generation Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip for improved wireless connectivity. The phone will ship running iOS 17, which promises to deliver a more streamlined and intuitive user experience.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey guys I'm Donald Tech jab and I'm here at Apple Park and I've elbowed my way to the front to give you guys a first look at the brand spanking new iPhone 15s so what's new Wellington is true and is it actually worth getting excited about well here's everything you need to know about the pro and pro Max and the very first thing you'll notice is how much lighter these phones are Apple's very proud of their new titanium housing replacing the glossy stainless steel and giving us a very sexy new matte brushed metal frame it has the added benefit of not showing smudges or fingerprints and it's more durable but really it's the weight that you notice the most 221 grams for the 15 Pro Max down from 240 last year now all iPhone 15s benefit from Slimmer bezels and a new contoured edge around the screen and it's kind of remarkable how different these feel from previous iPhones they've kept the same 6.1 inch and 6.7 inch screen sizes for the pro and pro Max but they have reduced the overall size thanks to those thinner bezels so the 50 Pro Max is 0.8 millimeters shorter and I think crucially 0.9 millimeters narrower which I definitely appreciate for the big Pro Max although it is now 0.4 millimeters thicker of course one of the big rumors was that Apple will be getting language of the toggle mute switch and changing it to an action button and that's exactly what happened now I'm in two minds about this because one thing I really like about my iPhones is that in my pocket without looking I can sort of switch between loud and mute and I don't have to look at it now you might have to look at what you're doing although by default a long press does still mute the phone and you get a little haptic vibration I also feel like I might get confused between the power button and the action mode button when it's in my pocket not sure yet we'll have to wait and see but obviously the advantage is you can do a whole lot more with the action button not just mute the phone you can turn on the flashlight switch to a camera app do voice recording and you can also toggle on shortcuts for the accessibility settings which for some people might be a really big deal however the more significant change is that Apple has finally embraced USBC I mean to be fair the lighting ports had a great run it was introduced 11 years ago on the iPhone 5. probably because the European regulations were kind of forcing Apple to do it and also of course with the EU when it's upcoming rights of repairability that's coming in a few years it is actually now much easier to fix and replace the back glass on the back of the new iPhone Pros previously on the 14 Pros you had to go into the front of the screen there's a whole faff so we are on this route to improve repairability but anyway all iPhone 15s now have USBC although on the two Pro Models it's much faster USB 3 giving us 20 times faster transfer speeds compared to USB 2 that we get on the cheaper 15 and 15 plus now interestingly Apple didn't mention anything about well battery life but also charging speeds I'd hoped that with the switch to USBC and potentially you know Thunderbolt or usb4 that we might get some increase in wire charging speeds but alas no unfortunately the only real benefit I can see apart from having the more ubiquitous USBC which obviously is what the mac and the iPad uses it is the faster transfer speed and if you are taking a pro raw or prores video off your phone currently it's a bit of a nightmare so this will definitely make it easier and finally in terms of design it wouldn't be a new iPhone without a couple of new colors with the pros coming in natural blue white and black titanium flavors all very muted compared to the fun colors that we get on the regular iPhone 15s but having a matte black option is very nice and I'm a bit of a sucker for this deep blue but which would you go for now on the inside the Pro Models get the new a17 Pro chip in terms of the processor up to 10 faster uh double the number of neural engine cores they've also added an av1 decoder for faster video streaming but I think most significantly they fully redesigned the graphics chip which now like Flagship Android Rivals now supports Hardware Ray tracing in games like Diablo 4 which I've got here and maybe a couple of others there's not a whole lot right now but hopefully devs will implement it in more games now it's on iPhone now this video is mainly about the pro and pro Max but I do have to mention the fact that once again the regular iPhones the 15 to 15 plus still have a 60 hertz display no promotion no high refresh for a 2023 phone which costs upwards of a thousand pounds it's a little bit unforgivable and I really don't understand it everything else about the 15s the design the chip the s16 the camera is actually a pretty significant upgrade but you're just not really going to see much of that extra perform once when you're limited to a 60hz screen so ah now one rumor that did not come true was around bigger batteries unfortunately there was no mention of this no bigger batteries no new efficiency claims for the new chip so same as last year it seems but I just hope we see some improvements to the battery health the longevity of the battery because my 14 pro Max after a year is down to 89 percent okay last but not least the camera and the iPhone 15 Pros have an upgraded 48 megapixel main camera with a larger sensor photos are also now 24 megapixels by default rather than 12 they've improved their smart HDR Tech and promised much better portraits and low light and I can't wait to test this properly but the headline has to be this new five times telephoto lens which is exclusive to the bigger Pro Max and this replaces the three times optical zoom that the regular 15 Pro still has and apple are very proud of this new 120 millimeter five times zoom lens it has a 25 larger sensor and impressively wide F 2.8 aperture and also an upgraded 3D sensorship ois so it should be the brightest most stable five times Zoom we've seen on a phone I also like this new ability to tap the one times icon here and it'll crop in slightly giving us a couple of different focal lengths both 15 Pros can now record 4K 60 prores video up from 4K 30 previously and you can also save those huge files to an external storage Drive via the USBC Port the 15 Pros also support spatial video which is Apple's new kind of 3D video which is coming soon and then can be played back on the upcoming Vision Pro headset and to round up the specs the 15 Pros also support Wi-Fi 6E we have a second gen Ultra wideband chip or uwb and of course it will ship running iOS 17. now I have only had like an hour to play with the new iPhone so far so lots of questions lots of things I want to test and I will have my full unboxing and review coming very soon so make sure you've hit that subscribe button you don't miss that video but first impressions it's a pretty decent upgrade the design refresh particularly the lighter weight is a very welcome change as is USBC and I'm glad that all iPhone 15s have it would have been good to see high Refresh on the regular 15s uh also would have been good to see faster charging and I'm also not convinced everyone wants a five times optical zoom if it were like the Galaxy s23 Ultra which has four lenses you have the benefit of the three times and the 10 times but with the iPhone 15 Pros the pro Max it's still three lenses and they've just switched out the three to a five and I personally really like the three times for that field of view particularly for portraits you could just buy the regular 15 Pro if you still won that three times but I am curious how the quality is going to be on the pro Max at sort of three or four times Zoom before you hit that new five times lots of questions still to answer lots of things to test but finally in terms of pricing it is pretty much the same as before we're talking 999 for the 15 Pro and 11 199 for the 15 Pro Max and that's the same in pounds and dollars although while that is a hundred pounds more than last year for the pro Max that does now start at 256 gigs of storage as opposed to 128 so that mitigates it a little bit anyway lots more videos to come make sure you have subscribed and let me know what you make of the 15 series and whether you're tempted to upgrade in the comments below thank you so much for watching guys and I'll see you next time right here well not right here probably back in the studio but right here on the tech jobhey
