How to Make a Fondant Teddy Bear Cake Topper
Welcome to howtocookthat.net, today we are going to look at how to make a fondant teddy bear for a cake topper. First of all, you need to color your fondant. If you are not sure how to do that, click on the link and go to the video on fondant basics. Once you have colored your fondant, we can start splitting it into basic sections for the amount we are going to need for the body, legs, arms, and head.
For the Body
Rolling out the fondant is an important step in making a teddy bear cake topper. Start by rolling the fondant into a circle, oval-type shape. Then, squash it a little bit narrower at the top and make it a bit taller than it needs to be. The reason for this is that fondant tends to squash down a bit as it dries, so if we make it a bit taller, it will be the right shape once it's set. Gum paste doesn't do this, but gum paste is a lot more expensive, so if we can make it out of fondant, that just makes it a little bit cheaper.
Making the Body
Now that we have rolled out our fondant, let's start making the body. Roll the piece into an oval shape and flatten it slightly at the top. Squish down the bottom where the legs are going to join the body. Don't worry too much about getting this part perfect, as we can adjust the position of the legs later.
Next, take a knife and cross-hatch on the top of the body to help it stick together better when you attach the arms. You'll also need to get a little bit of water and pop that onto join the two pieces of fondant together. This will help them bond together nicely.
The Legs
To make the legs, roll a piece of fondant into a ball and cut it in half. Roll each half into a sausage-type shape. Flatten the bottom for the foot and squish down the bit where the leg is going to join the body. Remember, the legs will just sit under the body, so we don't need to attach them yet.
Making the Legs
Take one of the legs and roll it back into its original ball shape. You should now have two even pieces for each arm. Roll again a similar sort of sausage-type shape. Where you are going to attach it to the body, take the knife and cross-hatch on the top of the leg to help it stick together better when you attach it to the body.
To attach the arms to the body, take the knife and cross-hatch on the top of the arm. Pop a little bit of water onto join the two pieces of fondant together. To secure the arms in place, rip off some baking paper and place that underneath the arm. Take another piece of spaghetti and insert it through the arm and into the body to provide support while it dries.
The Head
For the head, roll a piece of fondant into a circle shape again. Just look at the bear you are making and shape it down how it is. To keep the head from falling over, place some baking paper underneath it for support.
Making the Head
To make the nose, you need to create a small triangular shape using your two fingertips. Then, use the knife to pop that into place for the nose. If the shape isn't quite right once it's in place, you can just use the knife to carefully reshape it.
For the eyes, roll a tiny piece of fondant into a circle and then make it slightly oval shaped. Pop those into place on either side of the face.
The Eyes
To give your teddy bear some personality, you'll need a small amount of black fondant. Roll that out into an even snake and use the knife to cut it to length. Lift the edge of the eye with the knife and pop it into place on either side of the nose.
Last Steps
To add some finishing touches to your teddy bear, take a paintbrush and brush some pink luster dust or pink glitter inside each ear and on each cheek. This will give your teddy bear some extra sparkle.
Decorating the Teddy Bear
Finally, if you want to add an extra special touch to your cake, you can make a little mini-blue macaroon out of fondant. We had a blue macaroon with chocolate filling on the party table, so it mimicked what the party food was. To attach the macaroon in place, simply insert a piece of spaghetti into the side and secure it.
And that's it! You now have your very own teddy bear cake topper made entirely out of fondant.
