How to Make a Fondant Teddy Bear Cake Topper

Welcome to howtocookthat.net, today we are going to look at how to make a fondant teddy bear for a cake topper. First of all, you need to color your fondant. If you are not sure how to do that, click on the link and go to the video on fondant basics. Once you have colored your fondant, we can start splitting it into basic sections for the amount we are going to need for the body, legs, arms, and head.

For the Body

Rolling out the fondant is an important step in making a teddy bear cake topper. Start by rolling the fondant into a circle, oval-type shape. Then, squash it a little bit narrower at the top and make it a bit taller than it needs to be. The reason for this is that fondant tends to squash down a bit as it dries, so if we make it a bit taller, it will be the right shape once it's set. Gum paste doesn't do this, but gum paste is a lot more expensive, so if we can make it out of fondant, that just makes it a little bit cheaper.

Making the Body

Now that we have rolled out our fondant, let's start making the body. Roll the piece into an oval shape and flatten it slightly at the top. Squish down the bottom where the legs are going to join the body. Don't worry too much about getting this part perfect, as we can adjust the position of the legs later.

Next, take a knife and cross-hatch on the top of the body to help it stick together better when you attach the arms. You'll also need to get a little bit of water and pop that onto join the two pieces of fondant together. This will help them bond together nicely.

The Legs

To make the legs, roll a piece of fondant into a ball and cut it in half. Roll each half into a sausage-type shape. Flatten the bottom for the foot and squish down the bit where the leg is going to join the body. Remember, the legs will just sit under the body, so we don't need to attach them yet.

Making the Legs

Take one of the legs and roll it back into its original ball shape. You should now have two even pieces for each arm. Roll again a similar sort of sausage-type shape. Where you are going to attach it to the body, take the knife and cross-hatch on the top of the leg to help it stick together better when you attach it to the body.

To attach the arms to the body, take the knife and cross-hatch on the top of the arm. Pop a little bit of water onto join the two pieces of fondant together. To secure the arms in place, rip off some baking paper and place that underneath the arm. Take another piece of spaghetti and insert it through the arm and into the body to provide support while it dries.

The Head

For the head, roll a piece of fondant into a circle shape again. Just look at the bear you are making and shape it down how it is. To keep the head from falling over, place some baking paper underneath it for support.

Making the Head

To make the nose, you need to create a small triangular shape using your two fingertips. Then, use the knife to pop that into place for the nose. If the shape isn't quite right once it's in place, you can just use the knife to carefully reshape it.

For the eyes, roll a tiny piece of fondant into a circle and then make it slightly oval shaped. Pop those into place on either side of the face.

The Eyes

To give your teddy bear some personality, you'll need a small amount of black fondant. Roll that out into an even snake and use the knife to cut it to length. Lift the edge of the eye with the knife and pop it into place on either side of the nose.

Last Steps

To add some finishing touches to your teddy bear, take a paintbrush and brush some pink luster dust or pink glitter inside each ear and on each cheek. This will give your teddy bear some extra sparkle.

Decorating the Teddy Bear

Finally, if you want to add an extra special touch to your cake, you can make a little mini-blue macaroon out of fondant. We had a blue macaroon with chocolate filling on the party table, so it mimicked what the party food was. To attach the macaroon in place, simply insert a piece of spaghetti into the side and secure it.

And that's it! You now have your very own teddy bear cake topper made entirely out of fondant.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enWelcome to howtocookthat.net.Today we are looking at how to make a fondantteddy bear for a cake topper.First of all you to need to color your fondant. If you are not sure how to do that, clickon the link and go to the video on fondantbasics. Then we are going to split the fondant intobasic sections for the amount we are goingto need for the body, the legs, the arms andthe head.Starting with the piece for the body rollit into a circle, oval-type shape and thenwe are just going to squash it a little bitnarrower at the top and then we are goingto make it a bit taller than it needs to be.The reason for that is the fondant tends tosquash down a bit, so if we make it a bittaller as it sags down, it will be the rightshape.Gum paste doesnít do that, but gum pasteis a lot more expensive, so if we can makeit out of fondant, that just makes it a littlebit cheaper.Next we are going to do the legs.So we take a piece of fondant, roll it intoa ball and cut it in two.The reason I do it that way is I know theyare both even.Roll it into a sausage-type shape and thenflatten the bottom for the bottom of the footand then squish down the bit where the legis going to join the body.We are actually not going to join the legson right now; we will set him up once he isdried. Then the legs will just sit under the bodyso we will need to make it completely flat.Next, take the piece for the arms, again rolla circle and cut in two so youíve got twoeven pieces and then roll again a similarsort of sausage-type shape. Now where we are going to attach it to thebody, we are just going to take the knifeand cross-hatch and then just get a littlebit of water and pop that on to join. That just helps it to stick the two piecesof fondant together.Take your other arm, again just roll it intoa sausage shape, shape it how you want itand then take a piece of spaghetti and placeit through the arm and then place that intothe body. This is going to need some support while itis drying, so to do that you just rip offsome of your baking paper and place that underneaththe arm.Next take the piece for the head, roll itinto a circle shape to start again and thenjust looking at the bear that you are makingjust shape it down how it is.Put the baking paper underneath the head becauseyou want the head to sit a bit forward, wedonít want it sitting flat.Take two pieces of spaghetti, poke them intothe head to support it and then put that intothe body.Next, we are going to make the ears.Take a small piece of fondant and cut in two, little bit of water on the join and then justpop it into place. And then you repeat that for the other ear.Next we will do the line down the face.(If you look there is a line going down themiddle.)So just take a knife and not pressing hardjust gently make the indentation down themiddle. There is a little bit of line that you cansee on his body, so using the knife againjust do a little indentation again in themiddle of his body. And they are just the stitching seams, butit is just those details that take it fromlooking ordinary to looking great. So do the same on the legs and around thearms as well.Once you have done that, take something thatis rounded on the end, I am just using theend of a paintbrush here; you can use whateveryou have, and then just push down in the middleof the ears just to give that rounded indentwhere the ears are.Next we are going to make the pads to go onthe bottom of his feet so you need some lightpink fondant.Just roll it out fairly thinly and then usinga piping tip to take the circles out of it,cut out two circles and place one on the bottomof each foot.Grab a spare piece of fondant and just usingthe end of a piece of spaghetti give a bitof a fur-type texture, just have a practiceon the spare bit first and then do that alittle bit on his chest just under his chinand then on the end of his feet. Then take some light cream-colored fondantand shape it into a round shape for his nose, then cut it in half and then as it is in thatshape just stick that right where his noseshould go.Once itís in place you can then shape ita little bit more.Take a knife and just follow that indentationthat is down the middle. Then take a small amount, a very small amount,of black fondant and roll into a very, thineven snake. You might have to redo this a few times untilyou get a nice piece, just keep trying untilyou get a nice even piece. Then using the knife just cut it to lengthand lift it up with the knife and pop it intoplace.Cut the spare bit off the end and pop it onthe line that would be going down from thenose to the mouth.Next you need a small piece of fondant, makeit a triangular shape using your two fingertipsand then again using the knife just pop itinto place for the nose.If it is not quite the right shape once itísin place you can just use the knife to carefullyreshape it.Next for the eyes, you need a tiny piece andjust roll it into a circle and then make itslightly oval shaped and then just pop theminto place on either side. Now lastly we just want to take some pinkluster dust or pink glitter and using a paintbrushjust brush some just inside each ear and someon each cheek. Now depending what you are having on yourcake on your party, to the final one I'veadded a little mini-blue macaroon made outof fondant because we had the blue macaroonwith chocolate filling on the party tableso it mimicked what the party food was.If you want to do that, of course you canmake that as well. And just, I secured it in place with a pieceof spaghetti. And there you have your teddy bear.\n"
