Apple World Today Video Review - IK Multimedia iRig Recorder 3

Using iRig Recorder 3 to Capture Video and Audio

In this Apple world today video review, we're going to be doing something that doesn't happen very often - using the product we're reviewing to help create the video. The product is the new iRig multimedia iRig recorder version 3, available for free download in the App Store, but it's got a few in-app purchases. So, what's new with iRig recorder 3? Previously, the app was simply a really fairly good professional field recorder for music and voice. iCome Multimedia's developers realized that a lot of musicians and podcasters actually wanted to be able to capture video at the same time they were grabbing audio. So, they added that feature.

iRig recorder 3 is what we're using to capture this video and audio, and it's really quite comprehensive. Recordings are organized by timestamp or geolocation, and the main screen of the app can be shared just about any way you can imagine. We can upload this file to our iMac through Airdrop, messages, Dropbox, Google Drive, onedrive, SoundCloud, Facebook, FTP, or iTunes file sharing - just to name a few. Now, as you can see, the user interface is really simple and very clean. One tap starts audio and video recording, and over on the right side of the screen, there's an easily viewed level indicator. We can just increase or decrease gain with a simple swipe up or down the screen.

If we go in and stop the recording, we can immediately begin to edit the video. An audio video is overlaid with a small window on top of the sound, and swiping the playback line back and forth shows how the sound and video were synced. One feature we liked about the editor is that it makes copies of our files prior to making destructive edits. That way, if we need to go back and fix something we did, we have all the earlier versions of our audio and video untouched. Various editing tools are available, even though some are only available with an in-app purchase or have you registered the app or associated hardware.

We tried to register the iRig mic studio that we reviewed last week, but it told us we had an invalid serial number. Go figure! Here, we're selecting an area and going ahead and cropping. It says "it's destructive" do we want to continue? Yep, it goes ahead and processes that, and now you'll notice on the left side of the screen and the sidebar there we have two files - one untouched and the other cropped. Common editing tools like a fade in or fade out tool will end up costing money through in-app purchases. There's a pro bundle with Creative Bundle, which adds effects to audio that's $399. If you really want to add a lot of functionality like an equalizer, normalization, and compressor - well, that's a pro bundle that's going to run us $7.99 through the in-app store.

There are some pros to this app. We like the fact that we can record both video and audio with iRig recorder 3. Of course, we can do that with the Photos app or excuse me, the camera app on our iOS devices. The sound tools are easy to apply, and the app makes a copy of each recording before applying effects - that's kind of nice. The base app is free to try out, so that's nice as well.

However, there are some cons to this app. There are no video editing tools available. Buying other tools like the pro bundle add cost to the app, and for people who are just starting out in audio recording, GarageBand for iOS may be a bit much better and is a free solution although it can't record video at the same time. But if you're in the situation where video is more important anyway, it's probably just a better idea to record video with the camera app and not worry too much about the sound as a result of them - many in-app purchases necessary to bring the app up to a true audio editing studio. The lack of those video editing tools is definitely something we have to consider.

Rating iRig Recorder 3

We've got to give iRig recorder 3 a 3-star rating out of five stars possible. It's a solid app that does what it needs to do, but there are some major flaws in terms of features and price. We're not sure if we would recommend this app to everyone, especially those who are just starting out in audio recording or need more advanced editing tools. But for those who already have an iRig recorder and want to try out the video feature, it might be a good option.

Conclusion

In conclusion, iRig Recorder 3 is a solid app that can handle both audio and video recording with ease. However, there are some major flaws in terms of features and price that need to be considered. For those who already have an iRig recorder and want to try out the video feature, it might be a good option, but for others, we would recommend exploring other options such as GarageBand or other audio editing apps that offer more advanced features at a lower cost.
