Zeroy's First Pass at the Drag Strip (Twin turbo 370z)

I went to the drag strip and it was a disaster. I'm talking about my foot-throttle skills, or lack thereof. When they asked me to do that weird Bucky thing, I didn't know what to expect, but I wasn't thinking ahead, and my clutch just got stuck in gear. It was like my foot was trying to move the car and it just wouldn't budge. I swear, it's a good thing I had my foot out of the way because if I had been holding onto the wheel or something, who knows what would have happened? Luckily, my foot was free, but I was now stuck in neutral with no control over the car.

As I sat there, trying to figure out what to do next, I realized that I might have made a mistake by using less grippy tires. In retrospect, it's probably not a good idea to use tires that are too soft when you're doing a track day, especially if you're someone like me who tends to slip up at the worst possible moments. But, at the time, I was trying to be careful and didn't think about how my choices might affect the outcome of my run.

I have to admit, it's not easy watching your car perform poorly on camera. The drive depth is toast, the dip is gone, and there's no way we're going to fix this for tomorrow's track day. I'm actually pretty bummed out about it, but at least I got to experience what it's like to have a bad run firsthand. And who knows, maybe one of these days I'll be able to get a solid pass and make it down that track in under 12 seconds. A guy can dream, right?

I'm just glad that I was able to learn from this experience and move on. It's funny how sometimes we think we know what's going to happen, but life has other plans. In this case, my plan was to drive to the airport and pick up some data for tomorrow's track day, but it looks like things didn't quite work out that way.

On a more positive note, I'm actually doing a private drag day with all of my friends who are in town for the open house. We'll have plenty of time to fix my car and get me back on the track before then. And, as an added bonus, I got to show off my "mistakes" to everyone on social media. I mean, it's not always easy to laugh at ourselves when we're having a bad day, but sometimes you just have to roll with it.

I've been talking to my friends about the importance of testing and tuning, and how sometimes you need to break stuff in order to make your car go faster. It's true - those 9-second tires that I'm currently using are not exactly what you'd call "stock." But hey, when it comes down to it, it's all about finding what works for you and your car.

As I was talking to my friends, we started discussing the importance of having the right tools for the job. In this case, I needed a welding torch to fix the diff that broke on me during the run. It was a bit of a scare, but fortunately, it didn't cause too much damage. We also talked about how important it is to have a good team behind you - whether it's your friends or your crew chief, having people who know what they're doing can make all the difference when it comes to getting your car dialed in.

It's funny - sometimes you help someone out, but then they end up helping you out even more. My dad is always been super supportive of what I do, and I know he'll love getting behind the wheel of this thing.

scene those seats poked through looks legit the 370z got its very first wash ever Schulman I don't know what I was gonna say it looks good though look at those brakes dude looks super good so here's a plan I'm gonna take another quick test drive go get some ice from the grocery store me and Pat are gonna go to the drag ship are you coming Schulman okay cool so what my goal is today with the car I want to run it down the strip I don't want to push it super super hard because they don't want to break it for tomorrow I understand saying that I'm probably gonna jinx myself I would be happy if I can get a 10-second pass it's got the power it's got the tire I think this thing would pull like a mid 1 second 60 foot if I launch it decently hard I don't want to launch it that hard I just want to kind of slip the clutch for now and then maybe he little more aggressive as it runs go on but I would just be pumped to be able to make a pass without miss shifting shift pretty quick and figure out what this thing gets for a mile an hour that way I can figure out you know adding weight removing weight reducing 60-foot what this car could actually run in its form right now so it should be a fun test day but for now I'm gonna rip over to the supermarket go get some ice so cool this thing just starts like a stock car it's weird on this thing during the day I've literally driven at night I'll probably turn the play map off click on the dragstrip cos I don't think that'll necessarily be the best thing to oh yeah produce quick chefs but we'll see the brakes feel really good and it feels like they can stop I think there's still a little bit of air left in them because the pedal feels the tad pushy up top but I don't remember it was like that before because it's got a very heavy like brake booster system so I don't know figured out though Publix is the cheapest place to buy ice actually Walmart might have been cheaper I'm so bummed now we we had a cool interaction with a cop that was checking out the bill and he was telling that's what was legal and what wasn't legal about it but he said that we couldn't fill him he said the lining we get pulled over for is maybe not having a hood he said he'd pull us over just because you want to check the car out and then he asked us if we could do the same thing in his car this is kind of like a fun new problem to have loading her up with ice that's pretty sick let's go it breaks well now I forgot fasting thing was yeah do like God here without the Pops because it actually cools the rep somebody said do you like it oh no it goes it might not run attendee knows let's fight down the hole notice all the persons definitely you really yes 1% here's another reason why I don't think this cars gonna be as fast as the 700 so the reason why we made sort of like 1516 psi because of boost creep up top we're right now in lower gears the car will only make about 10 pounds which i think is probably closer to like high 500 s low 600 s so in the higher gears there's more load it's at higher rpm for longer so it has more time for all the exhaust gas to get trapped and overspend the turbo and not be able to skate fast enough out of the way skates creating more boost more power so with that meat set I think let's do a mile an hour high but it might not get the same eighth time as a car that has more power in the lower gears mode so we'll see all right so I'm guessing first pass 11 5 second pass low 11s third pass hopefully high 10 it is insane how much more relaxing it is showing up to the drag strip with a truck and trailer since probably the last three times I've gone there I've wound up breaking something being stranded and then have to like inconvenience a friend and ask for a tow because no one's around so I'm very very pumped about this so it's technically well technically it is the day before Thanksgiving and it's kind of a toss-up either the track is gonna be empty or it's gonna be really packed I think there's give me a lot of spectators because ever it's in town for Thanksgiving but there's not gonna be a lot of drivers because you don't get in your car sorted and prepped before having to prepare delicious Thanksgiving meal because all the dudes are the ones who prepare the meals all the time I don't know you know I'm saying I know hell he doesn't shake his head at me how it's so sensitive you guys already haven't seen this kind of happening slowly it's seeming more and more like the Z is going to be purposed more as a drag car than burnout car not because it doesn't do good burnouts but there simply isn't a lot of different burnout contest or competitions around here but there's a lot of drag racing in Orlando so I've been pretty excited about it and I'm excited about what the future could bring with getting it lighter and getting it to run faster times and make it a little more bulletproof just so I don't know I'm excited it seems like the track is super quiet like super super quiet so super super quiet all these cars look slow no it's faster than zero first lap out want to get a pass on the board not gonna launch it gonna just super super soft lift the glide see what this thing runs for mile an hour I've got some big 28 bias plies that I borrowed from Tainan this thing he just said to start him at like I think he said thirteen and a half and do sick burnout so it's what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna pull you guys in between the laps obviously we know the one weak point that we already have is that input shaft so I definitely want to dump the clutch however having these bias plies will absorb a lot of shock they kind of twist and wrinkles that'll help with any sort of abusive launch like it's that flippin the question the first one let's see one against her mile an hour that's right here my bet is I'm gonna miss the gear probably I feel like maybe third I don't know usually that's that's why I have this feeling first fast one of your best I think since you're not launching it yeah you're gonna try to like baby it off the line and the clutch is gonna continue you're gonna run like 12 530 miss dear probably like 14 at like me 12 8 12 8 I hope I show you a bit right now so yeah if that one's I buy him tweeze oh yeah yeah yeah I'm probably gonna have a hard time hearing me because I forgot my mic I don't know where it is this is where the nerves start things terrifying to see how much it weighs yeah I got it launched it a little bit more aggressively to get this thing to work 21 you call it dang it right Pat I think honestly if I use launch control might be a little bit easier because it's hard to like feather the guy yeah yeah when you did the burnout obviously slick tires sucky you like the locks when you went again to sing Hawks dude so I'm debating trying to use a launch control next time it's just this clutch is so aggressive and that you get so anxious up on the line with other allowed cars and stuff I think it's gonna really get 60-foot time if it doesn't break anything shifting is kind of hard in the car - it doesn't like really shift like quickly it's one of the few CDs I have that does that so I don't know I'm gonna do my best but uh that's a what did I run let me look at that man my bat was like a 15 Oh 21 at 104 not bad alright Brown do I step launch control or I just have left at that four and a half grand I'm actually be okay cuz we'll still kind of sound good either that or the welded part in the diff broke shattered the housing or which broke them out and fell out yeah and the drive shaft obviously program it broke because the diff fell out right I wonder if those those silly differences might have actually helped us bail gave us one I know and we didn't put it on you didn't want it well here's the thing I was worried that it would make it too rigid and like that bushing might have actually given us the Flex to not break stuff yeah yeah so it's one of those things I just don't know yeah well I'm gonna drive shaft though you can see that's great I'll put one right over there hey you guys see that yeah there it is yeah it's broke that's crazy okay but it's it doesn't look as bad as I
