Mini Cooper SD: A High-Performance Diesel Engine in a Premium Package

mini under BMW ownership now since 2001 and in that time BMW has invested 1.5 billion pounds into the brand and we've seen loads of iterations of the mini we've got countryman jcw coupe a

the reason we're interested in this the Mini Cooper SD is because of its powerful diesel engine when this Mini Cooper SD first rolled into the auto car offices I'll admit I was skeptical putting a high performance diesel engine into a car that's well known for having a crash II ride to me didn't sound like a good idea well the only way to really find out is by living with a car over a prolonged period and that's exactly what Gary Lord has done now Gary this is your long-term test car we've done around 10,000 miles on it what are your thoughts

well you say we oughta can't have I haven't really feel it as much as I would have liked because he keeps getting paged for journeys up and down the country because it's economical but it's also fun now minis are known for being afflicted by Paul ride is this any different no it's no different terrible ride sometimes feels a bit skittish when you're up to speed a little twisty road and when you're in town and this later potholes the short wheelbase doesn't help you go over one bump and then you go over the other and it's just yeah it's not good

all the feelings mpg obviously diesel you're gonna get a lot better MPGs but let's not forget this is 750 pounds more expensive yes it is so you've got to do your calculations I think here I worked out it was over sort of two years with a set number of miles then you're making money back and obviously diesel you got to keep your eye on the price of diesel price of petrol people are all donut downsizing and this is a car you can either you can have fun with every time you take it out in every time you run around about it just brings a smile to your face

you know if you're gonna do a decent amount of miles you know I don't think you're gonna have any less fun than with the petrol I mean it doesn't sound this great as long as you can get over that you know your bank balance will be better off in the long run I think Cooper SD is no different idea the other minis in terms of cabin space and sometimes the ergonomics of the controls can be a bit frustrating but you can't fall

it's a premium product so if I were to give you 23,000 pounds right here right now with a be DSD would it be a Cooper S or a different brand all together I liked how da one that we had its sort of economically just easier to get along with and you've got more booth space

I was forever of putting bags in the back of this boot and having to then put the back seats down because there just wasn't room but hopefully MIDI will you know maybe sort that out with the next iteration finally as an ownership proposition let's score out of 10 I'd say eight and a half yeah it's you know it's boss small to my face pretty much every time I've got into it so yeah now I completely agree with Gary despite it being an oil burning mini this really does put a smile on your face

the steering's well weighted the gearbox is slick and the pedal weights also they're really good it is just such a disappointment though that there's not much space inside and also that right you can't get away from the fact that it's just too awful it's clear that the mini hatchback makes sense has an ownership proposition
