CalDigit TS4 vs TS3 Plus vs Element Hub [Sponsored]

I'm using an M2 MacBook Air and I'm also using an M1 iPad Pro as my main host device interchangeably, so the 98 watts of power is more than enough but if you have let's say something like the 2016 M2 MacBook Pro that supports up to 140 Watts the 98 watts is going to be more than enough to keep that thing powered. Make sure that it's charging in real time even while it is in use and like I mentioned it does bring a 230 watt power supply into the actual device itself and that's because it wants to support as many any charging devices as possible.

You can see that with some of the ports, some of them support 7.5 Watts, some of them support 20 watts so you can plug in as many devices you want and probably charge up to 12 different devices at the same time and still be getting the full power to the host itself and actually outputting all those wattages to all those devices for instance it supports that fast charging magsafe it can fast charge any device with those 20 watt power supplies in there and still support the 98 watts to the actual host and then some.

Because this TS4 is their latest and greatest from Cal digit, this does run you at about $399 which is pretty steep and pretty expensive but from everything that you get from it from the longevity you're going to get from it from all the ports from the support from the actual future proofing that you get this thing is going to be an investment that's going to last you seven to ten years at a minimum. It's going to keep your desk setup clean, it's going to keep your workflow very efficient, it supports any device it charges any device so for $399 consider it an investment moving forward because it's going to support all of your workflow.

But now if you don't want to spend a $300 Cal digit does offer some other devices kind of in the same world that gives you pretty much 90 to 95 of the way there at $239 they do have their TS3 plus which is their 15 Port Thunderbolt three dock that supports up to a single 5K, 60Hz display or dual 4k, 60Hz on Max. It also has 15 ports of connectivity but most of any Thunderbolt three dock on the market currently and it does give you that 87 watt power delivery so not quite the 98 and not quite the 230 watt power supply but you are getting pretty much 90 to 95 of the way there with the TS3 plus.

And finally for $199 if you want to go a little bit cheaper even Cal digit does have their brand new Element Hub which is an 8 Port Thunderbolt 4 Hub so it supports a single AK 60Hz display or up to dual 6K, 60Hz on Max that support dual displays. It gives you 60 watts of power delivery and the compact design is ideal for a neat cable management and takes up much less space on your desk so if you're in a situation where you want something a little bit smaller a little bit cheaper you don't have the need for the 18 or 15 ports then the Element Hub could be for you because it does give you three Thunderbolt 4 ports and an additional four USB A, 3.2 Gen 2 ports and they give you up to 20 watts of power delivery on those as well so you do have a bunch of options at different price points from Cal digit.

But again they're TS4 their brand new Thunderbolt 4 dock is an absolute game changer for somebody that wants to Future proof themselves, somebody that's going to be using all 18 of those ports, somebody that's gonna be using it on a daily and a consistent basis I'm a big fan of it and that's gonna be my Hub moving forward but big shout out to Cal digit for partnering up with nine to five Mac and sponsoring this video. It was great to kind of play with these and I've been a Cal digit fan for years now so being able to actually work with them has been amazing if you guys want to check any of these out please click the links down in the description below to see exactly what they have going on there and Cal digit makes extremely quality products and they've been around for forever so highly highly recommend them but that's gonna do it for this video.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enCalder did just released their all-new ts4 Thunderbolt docking station and we were lucky enough to get our hands on it and put it through its Paces they took their iconic original design from 2015 and upgraded everything the 2023 standards so let's see if Celtic's latest and greatest is now worth their new price point so let's get started with the unboxing of the ts4 station itself as you can see with the unboxing experience everything that you need to know is actually on the box itself from what it looks like to all the different ports that it has to all the support from 8K to dual 4K to up to 18 different ports that it has kind of installed on here so they actually minimalize every actual paper product that you need by putting all the instructions and most of the actual no on the actual packaging itself and once you open it up everything that you need is inside the Box itself so you do get the actual Cal digit ts4 right in front of you you get a nice Thunderbolt 4 cable which on its own right is a pretty expensive product if you look at some of those on Amazon you get two rubber feet strips I'll show you in a second the actual power cord and then you get the impressive 230 watt power supply now yes this is a nice sizable brick but for this setup the 230 watts is going to come extremely handy when connecting to all 18 of these ports and you can see the Cal digit stuck to its guns with the design itself this is what really made caledogen and put them on the map was the design and how sleek and how can of industrialists look back in 2015 so what they did was they kept the original design they have the kind of that railing and the perforation on both the bottom and the top this is technically meant to stand vertically as opposed to horizontally but for people like myself they do include some nice rubber feet in here which are super easy to install and all you do is you put it on there and then it gives you some peace of mind when actually installing everything horizontally because those rubber feet keep it from moving especially when you have everything plugged into this thing at once but again this is technically meant to be used upright but I like to use it horizontally in my personal setup so in terms of the size of this unit itself you're dealing with something that's 5.5 inches in width 4.46 inches in depth and then 1.6 inches in height when you're saying it vertically it just changes the orientation but the size Remains the Same now in terms of the port situation on the ts4 this has everything that you would ever need in a professional setup and it could support pretty much any kind of monitor setup that you would ever want and obviously it works with Mac computers with Windows computers with anything that kind of gives you a USBC or Thunderbolt output but to show you the actual ports they start on the front side you you do get an SD and micro SD card reader they're both the latest and greatest of UHS 2 support so it gives you the best transfer speeds moving forward and future proofs to you a little bit if you are somebody that works with SD cards a lot and now you do get two 3.2 Gen 2 ports on the front in the USBC format one of them actually gives you 20 watts of output for charging the other one at 7.5 watts and they do support up to 10 gigs of speed the fact that they are 3.2 Gen 2 ports you also get a 3.2 Gen 2 port in the USB a format if you do have something that you want to plug in that way and that also gives you offline charging of 7.5 watts and then you do have your audio in Jack which we do have a couple more of those on the rear so what I mean by offline charging is that even if the computer is closed in clamshell mode or if it's not turned on or if it's not in use as long as this is plugged into Power you can actually charge your iPhone or any other auxiliary device when it is quote unquote offline so it does support that offline charging which is great to have so when you turn it around to the rear you do get the rest of your ports so you have your 2.5 gigabit Ethernet port so if you want to hardwire in some internet you can do that give your DC in with is where you plug your power supply into then you have your actual hosts your Upstream host your USBC Thunderbolt 4 Port so that is what you connect your actual MacBook or your Mac Mini or whatever other laptop you're using and that supports up to 98 watts of power delivery which is amazing through the 230 watt power brick you get two more Thunderbolt 4 ports which are USB 4 40 gig speeds which supports Thunderbolt 4 like I mentioned that's gonna be for Downstream devices and that gives you up to 15 watts of power delivery as well if you want to use them for charging you get a 1.4 display port plug-in right there you get a USBC data Port it is a Gen 2 10 gigs of data pass through and 7.5 watts of power and then you get an additional four USB 8 ports they're all 3.2 Gen 2 ports supporting that 10 gigs of transfer speed they all support offline charging and charge up to 7.5 Watts you do get an additional audio in and then an audio out as well so every port besides an HDMI port is on this Cal digit device and the fact that we have three Thunderbolt 4 ports that we can use makes this a complete setup for somebody that wants to have AC single cable solution and connect multiple devices whether they're monitors ssds external devices whatever the case may be and now some other important features to highlight is that the ts4 features a rear host port for a neater Cable Management solution because there are some other products on the market that kind of compete with this that give you a front facing host solution which I'm not a huge fan of it kind of makes everything look a little less neat overall so you can kind of use the rear host one that's on the Cal digit ts4 to keep everything cable managed securely then you also like I mentioned you do have that 98 watt host power delivery which is great for any laptop right I'm using an M2 MacBook Air and I'm also using an M1 iPad Pro as my main host device interchangeably so the 98 watts of power is more than enough but if you have let's say something like the 2016 M2 MacBook Pro that supports up to 140 Watts the 98 watts is going to be more than enough to keep that thing powered make sure
