DJI Mavic Air drone - Power that fits in your pocket

GoPro Exiting the Drone Market: DJI Unveils the Mavic Air

In a recent announcement, DJI has unveiled its latest product, the Mavic air, a $799 foldable model that can fit inside of a jacket pocket. Apple Insider was at the announcement this week and went hands-on with the new flying camera to get an in-depth look at its design and features.

The Mavic air is impressive, taking what DJI already pioneered with the fantastic Maverick Pro and further miniaturizing it by tweaking the collapsible design and shrinking the components inside when completely folded up and sitting on a table. The result is a device that takes up about the same two-dimensional footprint as Apple's iPhone 10, which is a pretty impressive accomplishment considering the drone's 3-axis gimbal and ability to shoot 4k footage.

While it's hard to say with certainty how the Mavic air will perform in the real world given that Tuesday's keynote was focused on gesture controls, obstacle avoidance, and foldability, the sample 4k footage from the DJI Phantom 4 Pro gave an excellent first impression at $7.99. The Mavic air makes sense without folding propeller arms, making it a very portable option. However, its main competitor, the Maverick Pro, folds to a nice compact size but is definitely larger and almost twice the weight, with a price tag of $1000.

One key difference about the design of the Mavic air is that the propellers themselves do not fold; instead, the full-size propellers must be positioned to be flush with the drone's body when collapsed to ensure they do not break and transport for years. This is an interesting change compared to its main competitor, the Maverick Pro.

DJI has been working hard to make capturing aerial footage as simple as possible, and it seems that their efforts have paid off in a big way. The Mavic air's two new quick shot auto-pilot camera modes, dubbed "Asteroid" and "Boomerang," are arguably its coolest features. Boomerang is somewhat simple flying around a subject on a set path while avoiding obstacles with onboard sensors, giving a sort of cinematic shot that might take somebody with the controller multiple tries to get right. However, it's a basic shot but one that requires no real skill in flying a drone to achieve.

Asteroid, on the other hand, is a combination of the autopilot capabilities of the Mavic air as well as spherical panoramic 32 megapixel image capabilities. The end result is pretty neat, with the video starting off by flying away from the subject and then transitioning into an encompassing view of the world around the drone.

The Mavic air also comes with gesture controls included with the Spark, but unlike its main competitor, it also offers a dedicated physical controller, offering the best of both worlds at its $799 price tag. This allows users to worry less about crashing the drone while still having the flexibility and convenience of gesture controls.

In addition to its impressive features, the Mavic air also includes new advanced pilot assist systems that not only recognize and avoid obstacles but can bypass them both vertically and horizontally. This makes it an even more capable and user-friendly drone for beginners and experienced pilots alike.

The device also has 8 gigabytes of storage built-in, meaning that if users forget their SD card or if it's full, they still have enough built-in space for roughly 10 minutes of 4k in the highest quality setting. This is a welcome feature for anyone who wants to capture high-quality footage without having to worry about running out of storage.

In terms of its overall performance and features compared to its main competitor, the Mavic Pro, it seems that the Mavic air offers better value for money. While the Maverick Pro has a few key advantages, including a higher resolution cinematic 4k mode and greater 4.3 mile range from the controller, the Mavic air's wider lens and close-to-double video bitrate make it a more compelling option.

Customers won't have to wait long for the Mavic air, as it is now available for pre-order from B&H and Adorama using the links in the video description.
