Hands-on - 16.3 changes and features for HomePod and HomePod mini

**The Humidity Sensor and Temperature Sensor**

The humidity sensor and temperature sensor are two essential components that can be used with automations, allowing users to monitor and control various aspects of their home environment. The calibration process is indeed accurate, as indicated by the device's design. Both sensors work in tandem to provide precise readings, which can be accessed through Siri or other smart home devices.

The temperature sensor and humidity sensor can also be integrated into scenes and automations, enabling users to create custom experiences tailored to their needs. For instance, a user can set up an alarm that triggers when the temperature reaches a certain level, ensuring optimal comfort and safety. The sensors' data can also be used to trigger smart home devices, such as turning on lights or adjusting thermostats.

**Ambient Sounds Remastered**

The latest version of HomePod software, 16.3, brings exciting new features that enhance the listening experience. One of the notable additions is the remastered ambient sounds feature. Users can now access a wider range of calming and soothing soundscapes, including fireplace, forest, ocean, and more. These ambient sounds can be used in scenes and automations, allowing users to create immersive experiences that adapt to their environment.

When using the Home app, users can select ambient sounds as a media option, just like they would with music or podcasts. This feature is particularly useful for those who enjoy listening to calming sounds while falling asleep or relaxing. The remastered ambient sounds are designed to be more engaging and realistic, creating an immersive experience that simulates the real thing.

**HomePod Mini and Older Versions**

While newer versions of HomePod software offer exciting features, older devices may not support some of these enhancements. For example, users with a HomePod Mini running 16.2 or below will not have access to ambient sounds via the Home app. However, they can still use Siri to play ambient sounds, albeit without the same level of customization and control.

**Creating Automations and Scenes**

One of the most exciting features in 16.3 is the ability to create automations and scenes using ambient sounds. Users can now build custom experiences that trigger specific actions when certain conditions are met. For instance, a user can set up an automation that plays the ocean sound every morning at a specific time or triggers a scene that adjusts the lighting and temperature in a room.

To illustrate this feature, let's create a new scene called "Wakey Wakey" and add it to our HomePod playlist. We'll select the ocean sound as the ambient sound for this scene. Now, we can trigger this scene using Siri by saying, "Hey Siri, play Wakey Wakey." The ocean sound will start playing, creating an immersive experience that helps us wake up feeling refreshed.

**Future Updates and Sound Recognition**

In a future update, HomePod Mini users can expect to gain access to sound recognition support. This feature allows devices to recognize sounds like smoke alarms or appliances and notify users accordingly. For those with hearing impairments or living in areas where background noise is a concern, this feature can be incredibly helpful.

While the author only has one first-generation HomePod, they were able to test the audio tuning optimization for podcast and spoken content. Although this feature may not work on older devices, it's an exciting development that promises to enhance the listening experience for users in the future.

**Additional Features**

In addition to ambient sounds, 16.3 also introduces more granular volume controls. When playing low volumes, these new controls allow for a wider dynamic range between absolute zero and what is audible. This means that users can adjust the volume to their liking without sacrificing sound quality.

The update also includes support for finding friends and fans, as well as asking Siri for the location of specific individuals or devices. Furthermore, users can now ask Siri to turn off laundry room lights, which responds with a confirmation tone. These features demonstrate Apple's ongoing commitment to improving the HomePod experience and expanding its capabilities.

**Conclusion**

The latest version of HomePod software, 16.3, brings a wealth of exciting new features that enhance the listening experience and expand the device's capabilities. From remastered ambient sounds to improved granular volume controls, there's something for everyone in this update. Whether you're looking to create custom scenes and automations or simply enjoy more realistic soundscapes, 16.3 has got you covered.

however just ask Siri to play ambient sounds what sounds can you play play White Noise but this way is definitely not as good because in 16.3 you can also create automations and scenes using Ambient sound so I'm gonna go in here and just call this new scene wakey wakey all right and we're going to find our homepod and then I'm just going to Simply go into audio choose my audio choose a Ambient this evening but pay attention to the automation page in the home app Watch What Happens it adds that recurring automation so you can manage it edit it delete it Etc now this is a feature that is not yet available but it is coming with a future update and that is sound recognition support for the homepod mini now sound recognition as you probably know already is a feature found within accessibility settings in iOS and this allows your device to recognize sounds like smoke alarms or appliances or even animals and notify you when it hears those sounds and now you'll see that your iPhone alerts you that it heard a smoke alarm so imagine how helpful this feature will be for someone hearing impaired or maybe you just didn't hear it because it occurred in another room where your homepod resides super handy now unfortunately because I only have one first-gen homepod I can't really compare side by side the audio tuning optimization for things like podcast and other spoken content but what I can do is simply play a podcast and let you hear play nine to five Mac happy hour yeah like probably the the laptops were going to come out and you type everything or something yeah there's all sorts of assets that include references to October the first gen also gets more granular volume controls so at low volumes you have more well I guess you can kind of describe it like dynamic range between absolute zero and what's audible find my nail let you ask Siri for the location of friends and fans what's Ducky's location I thought this already was a feature ducky Benjamin is right around here wasn't that already a feature or am I misremembering turn off laundry room light so here's how it responds okay the ceiling light is off sounds like on 16.2 and older turn on laundry room light but now you get a cool confirmation tone for devices that can't visibly show a change or maybe in other rooms turn off laundry room light that's pretty cool so ladies and gents that has
