The Dell XPS 13 has undergone a significant change with the latest release, replacing the traditional full-size SD card slot with a Micro SD card slot. This move is seen as a slap in the face for creators who rely on the laptop's portability and flexibility to take their work on the go. The XPS 14 and XPS 16 laptops also share this same design flaw, removing the HDMI port and other essential connectivity options. This means that users will have to "embrace del life" if they decide to purchase either of these laptops.
The specs under the hood for these laptops are where things get interesting. The XPS 13 starts with a Core Ultra 5-125h processor, which can also be configured as a Core Ultra 7-75h or 165h core Ultra 7. This processor runs at 28 Watts and comes with 8 GB of dual-channel memory as standard. However, users can configure the laptop to have up to 64 GB of LPDDR5 memory at 7,467 MHz. The XPS 13 also features Intel Arc graphics and a 55-watt battery. The starting price for this laptop is $1,299.
The XPS 14 takes things up a notch with its Core Ultra 7-155h processor, which can also be configured as a Core Ultra 7-165h running at 30 Watts. This processor comes with 16 GB of dual-channel memory as base, but users can configure it to have up to 64 GB of RAM. The XPS 14 features Intel Arc graphics and is available with up to 4 TB of SSD storage. It also comes with a slightly larger 69.5-watt-hour battery. The starting price for this laptop is $1,699.
The XPS 16 is the most powerful of the three laptops, starting with a Core Ultra 7-155h processor that can be configured as a Core Ultra 9-185h running at 45 Watts. This processor comes with 16 GB of dual-channel memory and is available with up to 64 GB of RAM. The XPS 16 features Intel Arc graphics and is available in several different GPU options, including an RTX 4050 laptop GPU running at 30 Watts, an RTX 450 laptop GPU running at 50 Watts, and an RTX 460 laptop GPU running at the same wattage. The laptop also comes with a 99.5-watt battery. The starting price for this laptop is $1,999.
Overall, these laptops from Dell and Alienware offer impressive specs and performance, but their design choices leave much to be desired. Whether you're a creator or just looking for a powerful laptop, these options are definitely worth considering. However, it's unclear whether the removal of certain ports will be enough to make up for the overall experience.
As with any new product release, there is always room for improvement and potential drawbacks. The Dell XPS lineup has always been known for its sleek design and impressive specs, but this latest release may raise some eyebrows. It remains to be seen whether these laptops will live up to their promise and meet user expectations.
If you're considering purchasing one of these laptops, it's worth weighing the pros and cons carefully. On the one hand, the XPS lineup offers excellent performance and a sleek design that is sure to turn heads. On the other hand, the removal of certain ports may be a deal-breaker for some users. "WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enall right so Del is coming out with some interesting laptops at CES this year I'm to kick things off with the Alienware M16 R2 this is the revised model for 2024 there are some really interesting design shifts for this year which I'll get to uh momentarily and then there's the new XPS lineup from Dell we have the XPS 13 14 and 16 which I think is going to be one of the most polarizing laptops for this year uh I'll talk about my thoughts a little bit later in the video but yes let's Ki things off with the M16 R2 this is a complete design shift compared to previous generation so they've significantly reduced the form factor uh for 2024 it's about 15% smaller compared to previous generation and one of the main things that they did was remove the thermal shelf uh that was sort of sticking out of this laptop if you recall that was one of the trading factors of the M16 R1 so that's gone which also comes with a little bit of a compromise so you don't get the stadium lighting which sort of highlights that part I actually really like that feature but it's uh sad to see that go away with the 2024 model now if you take a look at the exterior design of the M16 R2 not a lot has actually changed uh in terms of the overall design language they've still maintained the same alien wear look from the previous generation so the whole chassis the top LD bottom lid comes with anodized CNC aluminum and you've got the 16 text that's embossed on the logo with the alien Weare logo that's led up in RGB which can be controlled through software uh I really like the Aesthetics I mean it still gives me those spaceship themes by which is really really nice the Z height for this laptop is around 93 in versus 1 in which is pretty cool and the weight has been substantially reduced I mean I can immediately feel the difference uh compared to last gen so that's definitely a welcoming change now opening the laptop you're graded with a 16-in 16 X10 Quad HD Plus 240 HZ display with a 3 millisecond response time and it's an all right panel I mean they haven't really they're not going to offer any olet options or mini LED options which I feel like is a missed opportunity because you know legion's doing it uh razer's doing it all these other brands are pushing display technology but I feel like Alienware is just taking a step back uh because the peak SDR brightness on this is only topping at around 300 nits which is again not that great um so yeah I just feel like in the display Department it's really not much of an upgrade now as I mentioned earlier in the video due to the revised cooling system for the M16 R2 they were able to shift the keyboard a little bit up top which gives you a little bit more room for the palest area so it adds the ergonomics when you're using this laptop and they also eliminated the low profile mechanical switches for the R2 so they've stuck to the good old standard switch profile which offers 1.8 mm of key travel so it sounds great it feels great uh and uh yeah it doesn't have that tactile click uh that was something that annoyed me the most with the last generation the trackpad comes with this really cool perimeter lighting which I guess is alienware's way of saying hey I know you guys are going to miss the stadium lighting at the front front so we're going to give you guys that on the trackpad another interesting feature that's added to the M16 R2 is stealth mode uh now this essentially is a quick hotkey that's programmed to the F2 uh button that essentially turns off the RGB lighting it disables the Halo lighting around the trackpad converts the RGB into white and essentially puts it into silent mode so this essentially you know obviously it's going to cut down the power levels but it is something that's used to sort of prolong the battery life and I love this implementation because if you're taking this thing from your desktop setup and if you're just taking it to Coffee Shop you just instantly hit that button over there and boom you're just automatically set for that stal mode feature where there's absolutely no rtb just easily fits into uh any environment which I kind of like so that's a thoughtful feature anywhere now if you look at the Port setup for the M16 R2 uh just like the previous generation uh some of them are located at the back so you get HDMI 2.1 power in uh USB C 3.2 Gen 2 Thunder B 4 type-c couple usba a ports micr SD RJ45 and a headphone jack uh I will say that they did eliminate the fulls sizee SD card slot and the mini display port so that's something that you're going to miss with the newer version so uh something to take note of as for specs Alienware did opt to go with Intel's meteor Lake CPUs instead of raptor Lake refresh so you can get this with either a core Ultra 7 155h or a core Ultra 9 185h processor uh it comes with 16 G of dual Channel memory uh as base and then you can configure it up to 64 GB which is pretty neat uh you also only get two m.2 slots this time instead of three with the previous generation so that's a bit of a Miss now for the GPU the base model will come with an RTX 450 running at 115 Watts plus 20 wats of dynamic boost the same thing goes for the RTX 460 the 470 will have an additional 5 wats uh with for dynamic boost and price-wise you're looking at $1,600 to $1,700 for the core Ultra 7 model and then the core Ultra 9 is going to cost around $18 to $1,900 so they're really expensive gaming laptops but you are getting premium design premium build quality I'm really interested to see what the performance is like especially with the switch to meteor Lake and how that you know works with the RTX 40 series graphics cards so stay tuned for a full performance review I think this is going to be an pretty interesting Contender to compete with the stuff from Legion Razer RG you know and the rest of the competitors somewhat Tiny But Mighty the classic vending machine case is now slightly bigger to support your massive GPU obsessions with a built-in stabilizer clip and a 280 M Allin one cooler with a 140 mil fan fitment on all mounts the best part is it can't fit a Micro ATX motherboard with some limitations but a full siiz ATX power supply is not a problem we have fine dust filters everywhere and that interesting LCD panel for memes or System Info complimenting older Hardware on display the new Tower 200 in five colors Check It Out Below all right so now I think it's a great time to transition and talk about the new XPS laptops particularly the XPS 13 14 and 16 now Dell is going through a little bit of a Rebrand uh for these models because they just want to simplify things so if you recall the XPS 13 plus was introduced a while back which was sort of I guess it was concept design they were just testing Waters to see what people think I guess the majority of people love the design so they decided to just take that approach and apply to the bigger form factors so the XPS 13 plus is now going to be renamed as the XPS 13 and then we have an XPS 14 which is sort of like the middle child for the uh lineup and then the largest form factor is going to be the XPS 16 there's not going to be an XPS 17 or XPS 18 for 2024 it's just 13 14 and 16 now XPS laptops have always known for their premium designs and this year they're taking a completely different approach with the styling and they've kept it consistent across all three form factors so the chassis is made out of CNC machine aluminum with Gorilla grass 3 for the display it's just super minimal design I actually really like it they're you know they're trying to make a statement with the newer design IDs for these chassis it also comes with a torque hinge design so you can open the laptop with just one hand and it's super smooth and it's very rigid you also get two color options to pick from you have platinum and graphite and the cool thing is that the color sort of transitions really well into the interior space so you're not just getting a two-tone finish but rather something that looks consistent across the board now these laptops are ultra thin so from a portability standpoint you're not going to have any issues lugging the these laptops around now one of the most interesting design features of the xace lineup is the included edge2edge keyboard layout so this allowed Del to essentially Jam in larger key caps but also you get a touch capacitive function layout so there is no physical keys to you know map your function keys or anything like that it's all capacitive which is a bit of a deal breaker for me because when you are using applications that require those function keys instantly like the esape button or or alt F5 to refresh or alt f4 to Quick the whole experience is just going to feel awkward and I feel like capacitive especially for laptop is just a no-o in my opinion because you know it could break it's definitely um you know something that could potentially fail in the years to come and it's just nowhere close to having a physical button it's just it's just a fact I feel like Dell could have learned a thing or two from Apple because when they dropped the touch bar for the MacBook Pros I mean we all know how that went it was a complete failure um and and so they brought back the function the physical function layout with physical buttons with the new Macbook Pros and suddenly it's like the best laptop that people love but here it's like you know it's I feel like history is repeating again um I'm not quite sure about how this capacitor layout is going to work and Dell's whole reasoning behind this design implementation is that it allowed them more room for a better thermal solution which I don't know if I'm completely buying that but I'll definitely you know validate the temperatures and all that stuff in the full performance review so definitely stay tuned for that the keyboard itself looks pretty cool I do like the edge2edge design layout especially because it gives you larger Keys uh and you also get dedicated Windows co-pilot button that'll give you instant access to uh the suite of Microsoft's AI tools and another interesting feature is of course the seamless glass touchpad now this is a Sleek glass material that spans across the entire Palm rest area and yet it comes with active touchpad that stretches from the windows keys to the back arrow key and it comes with haptic feedback so the overall fit and finish of this seems polished and I really like this implementation it's kind of nice but I have to spend more time testing out this new trackpad design to see if it's actually any good and if it you know causes a bit of bottle leg from your everyday productivity use case so yeah it's cool I like the clean Aesthetics of the XPS lineup but um I'm really curious to know what you guys think about this whole lineup it's it's quite polarizing I'm pretty sure some people like it some people don't like it but yeah I'm somewhere in the middle a couple of other things to add add to the XPS 14 and 16 is that they come with front-facing speakers so the 14 comes with two watt woofers and a 2 watt Tweeter setup whereas the 16 comes with 3 wat wolfers and 2 wat tweeters and if we move on to the displays the XPS 13 comes with a 13.4 in 16 X10 3K plus OLED panel you can also offer Quad HD Plus or full HD Plus IPS panels the xps1 14 comes with two display offerings so you get 1200p or full HD Plus at 120 HZ IPS with a peak SDR brightness around 500 nits and it also comes with an OLED panel at 120 HZ with lower Pak SDR levels the XPS 16 starts with a 1200p display with the same 500 nit 120 HZ IPS panel and it also offers a 4K plus OLED panel with a 90 HZ refresh rate so it's a bit of a step down from the 14 uh laptop so yeah I personally would pick the full HD Plus 1200p 120 HZ display all day any day now I'm going to switch to a bit of a rant mode here because I'm a little bit disappointed with Del's approach for the port selection for the entire XPS lineup so if you start with the XPS 13 you're only getting two Thunderball 4 typc ports you don't get a headphone jack or even a fullsize typa port they've definitely cut back on the ports with the smallest laptop now what's even frustrating to me is that when you look at the 14 and the 16 they've taken away a fullsize SD card and replaced it with a Micro SD card slot which is a huge slap in the phase for creators because it's one of those laptops that's catered towards you know those photographers who want a thin and light premium built Windows laptop that can take with them wherever they go and eliminating that core feature is just a big it's a big slap in the face guys and I'm honestly frustrated the moment I saw it when I was briefed at uh New York City for these laptops I was just like come on guys why'd you do it you know this this is that was really sad both the 14 and the 16 share the exact same port setup so you get thunderbow 4 type-c I believe it's three along with a headphone jack and that's about it you don't get HDMI you don't get any of the other stuff so yeah that's it's you have to embrace dle life if you decide to pick either of these laptops I'm kind of pretending as if I have these laptops in front of me but I don't but you know you get the idea now the last thing to cover here are the specs packed under the hood for these laptop so I'm going to refer to my phone over here because there's just a lot to cover so the XPS 13 starts with a core Ultra 5 125h you can also get a Core Ultra 75h or a 165h core Ultra 7 that can run at 28 Watts it also comes with 8 GB of dual chel memory um as standard which not sure why that should have been 16 GB but you can configure it with up to 64 GB of lpddr5 memory at uh 7,467 MHz which is insane uh you can also configure the 13 with up to 4 tab of SSD storage and it comes with Intel art graphics and it comes with 55 wat battery and the starting price for the XPS 13 is $12.99 now if you switch over the XPS 14 it's going to going to start with a core Ultra 7 155h you can also opt for the core Ultra 7 165h running at 30 WTS uh it's going to feature 16 GB of dual Channel memory as base but you can configure with up to 64 GB similar to the XPS 13 in terms of the GPU uh it comes with Intel arc graphics but you can also Max it out to an RTX 4050 laptop GPU uh running at 30 wats so it's definitely not the fastest GPU on the planet but you know it's a little bit of boost for those applications that require uh some uh processing in terms of battery it comes with a slightly bigger 69.5 wat hours compared to the 13 and the starting price for that laptop is $16.99 and if you wrap things up with the XPS 16 it starts with a core Ultra 7 155h you can get a 165h or a core ultr 9 185h running at 45 Watts uh 16 GB of dual Channel memory as base but can be configured with up to 64 GB 4 TB SSD storage and as for the GPU the x 16 is going to come in a few different options so it's going to start with Intel AR Graphics but you can also get an rtx450 running at 50 wats RTX 460 running at the same wattage and an RTX 4070 running at 60 watts so it's not going to break any gaming barriers this is not a gaming laptop in the first place it's just there to sort of help you guys with a little bit of GP processing power if you're using applications that require that uh but it'll be interesting to see what the performance is like and you also getting a 99.5 wat battery so that plus the efficiencies built into the meteor Li chips should technically result in better battery life but we'll have to wait and find out when we test it out in the full review so stay tuned for that and the starting price for the xp16 is $18.99 so those are the new laptops from Dell and Alienware let us know what you guys think about the M16 R2 from Alienware and the new XPS lineup from Dell I mean I'm curious to hear what your thoughts are um are you guys a fan of the new design do you think it's completely weird and if you guys have any questions regarding either of these laptops that you want me to cover in the full review be sure to let us know in the comments down below I'll revisit them as I am going through my evaluation I'm Eber with hyrix thanks much for watching and I'll talk to you guys in the next oneall right so Del is pretending as if I have these laptops in front of me but I don't but you know you get the idea now the last thing to cover here are the specs packed under the hood for these laptop so I'm going to refer to my phone over here because there's just a lot to cover so the XPS 13 starts with a core Ultra 5 125h you can also get a Core Ultra 75h or a 165h core Ultra 7 that can run at 28 Watts it also comes with 8 GB of dual chel memory um as standard which not sure why that should have been 16 GB but you can configure it with up to 64 GB of lpddr5 memory at uh 7,467 MHz which is insane uh you can also configure the 13 with up to 4 tab of SSD storage and it comes with Intel art graphics and it comes with 55 wat battery and the starting price for the XPS 13 is $12.99 now if you switch over the XPS 14 it's going to going to start with a core Ultra 7 155h you can also opt for the core Ultra 7 165h running at 30 WTS uh it's going to feature 16 GB of dual Channel memory as base but you can configure with up to 64 GB similar to the XPS 13 in terms of the GPU uh it comes with Intel arc graphics but you can also Max it out to an RTX 4050 laptop GPU uh running at 30 wats so it's definitely not the fastest GPU on the planet but you know it's a little bit of boost for those applications that require uh some uh processing in terms of battery it comes with a slightly bigger 69.5 wat hours compared to the 13 and the starting price for that laptop is $16.99 and if you wrap things up with the XPS 16 it starts with a core Ultra 7 155h you can get a 165h or a core ultr 9 185h running at 45 Watts uh 16 GB of dual Channel memory as base but can be configured with up to 64 GB 4 TB SSD storage and as for the GPU the x 16 is going to come in a few different options so it's going to start with Intel AR Graphics but you can also get an rtx450 running at 50 wats RTX 460 running at the same wattage and an RTX 4070 running at 60 watts so it's not going to break any gaming barriers this is not a gaming laptop in the first place it's just there to sort of help you guys with a little bit of GP processing power if you're using applications that require that uh but it'll be interesting to see what the performance is like and you also getting a 99.5 wat battery so that plus the efficiencies built into the meteor Li chips should technically result in better battery life but we'll have to wait and find out when we test it out in the full review so stay tuned for that and the starting price for the xp16 is $18.99 so those are the new laptops from Dell and Alienware let us know what you guys think about the M16 R2 from Alienware and the new XPS lineup from Dell I mean I'm curious to hear what your thoughts are um are you guys a fan of the new design do you think it's completely weird and if you guys have any questions regarding either of these laptops that you want me to cover in the full review be sure to let us know in the comments down below I'll revisit them as I am going through my evaluation I'm Eber with hyrix thanks much for watching and I'll talk to you guys in the next one\n"
