iPad mini Review - My new FAVORITE iPad

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enas a tech reviewer devices of all shapes and sizes make their way through my desk all year but only a select few become part of my daily life and i know this video is only just beginning but i have a feeling the new ipad mini might become a regular in my daily arsenal hi i'm michael josh your gadget matchmaker helping you find the right device to match your needs in this video i'll review the new ipad mini and tell you why i think it might be your gadget match 2. let's start with an unboxing shall we what do you get when you buy an ipad mini these days love this graphic font notice there's no plastic wrapper anymore all part of apple's commitment for more eco-friendly packaging unlike the iphones gratification is delayed a bit the ipad mini comes wrapped in paper but if we take it out and flip it around you'll finally see the purple color shining through we'll take a closer look later next up designed in california packet with a visual getting started guide some legal paperwork a sim tray ejector tool because i have the cellular model and two white apple stickers finally there's a usbc to c cable and unlike the iphones the new ipad mini comes with a 20 watt usbc charger okay now let's peel off this wrapper so we can get a better look at the new ipad mini love this purple color my mom needs this it's her favorite color this brushed aluminum finish is similar to the ipad air as well as apple laptops it doesn't pick up smudges but has a sheen to it nonetheless by the way these antenna lines only appear on the cellular model all right i'll show you more of the ipad mini later but first let's unbox this matching smartfolio case pull here pretty standard this case is similar to what apple offers for its other ipads it folds like this so you can use your ipad mini as a stand for watching movies but also like this when you want to use it on an incline and last but not least the apple pencil 2. it's pretty straightforward just the pencil and some paperwork i'll talk more about the pencil later so this is the new ipad mini completely redesigned with that same modern appeal you'll also find on the ipad pro and ipad air flat edges and a more slate like feel the old design has been around for quite a bit so i'm pretty glad that the new ipad mini has gotten a makeover it's available in classic space gray starlight which is a cross between silver and cream pink and purple i love my purple review device but i wish it came in all the colors of the rainbow like the new imax in terms of size the new ipad mini is actually shorter but the screen is bigger from 7.9 to 8.3 inches it's just as wide as before so even if you have relatively small hands like me you can actually wrap your fingers around it it's a tad bit thicker too but definitely much lighter than the ipad air and it's really the size and weight difference that sets this ipad apart from the rest of the ipad lineup and is what makes it attractive to users like me it's not much larger than my kindle and around the same size as an actual notebook so whether you use a backpack or a man purse like me the ipad mini is the perfect size to take anywhere it's for this reason that i've been a long time ipad mini users and i'm pretty thrilled that apple has decided to keep both the ipad mini and the iphone mini i also like the fact that it's being a smaller device doesn't mean it's any less of a device it's just as powerful as the ipad air more on that after the break before we dig deeper i feel like it's imperative that i answer the question that i get asked the most where does the mini fit in apple's ipad lineup the simplest way to put it the regular ipad is apple's budget model it does a job the pro models are pricey and are meant for those who need the best specs because of the kind of work they get paid to do and right in the middle are the ipad air and the ipad mini the ipads for most people i love these two devices because they are more affordable but are still very similar in capability to the pro models both support the apple pencil too which i love and share the same new design in a perfect world you should buy the ipad air if you want a bigger tablet and the ipad mini if you wanted a smaller one but because apple announced the air late last year the mini inevitably has better hardware and some new features one day i hope that apple releases these two new ipads at the same time to make it easier for users to pick between the two now let's talk about what's new software and hardware wise as it was released alongside the new iphone the ipad mini is powered by the same a15 bionic chip the ipad air has last year's a14 chip the ipad mini also has a feature called center stage which we first saw on the ipad pro earlier this year basically that means the selfie camera is ultra wide but it doesn't use the whole frame in a video call that way if you move from left to right it will look like the camera is panning to follow you around even if the ipad stays put and if another person enters the frame it will adjust to fit two people center stage supports facetime and many other third-party apps like zoom and google meet in a world where video calls are now the norm it's a great feature to have and it's only a matter of time before this feature becomes available on the ipad air so if you're considering buying one i suggest you wait a few months last year's ipad air was released around november all the other features that came to last year's ipad air also come to the ipad mini a feature i really like and i wish would also come to the iphone is touch id fake power button on the top right hand side of the device don't get me wrong i love face id but i really like the ease of touch id especially now that i often have a mask on speaking of make sure you register both your right and your left finger that way you can unlock the device whether you're holding it like this or like this the ipad mini also has a usbc port instead of the lightning port that's on iphones and the previous ipad mini this means you can do things like connect peripherals like say a digital camera to preview and transfer images you've shot and import them to say adobe lightroom for editing yup you can do pro things on this device also notice too that the new ipad mini has speaker grilles on its top and bottom so if you prop it this way to watch a movie you get stereo speakers firing in both directions the audio on the ipad mini is sufficiently loud for watching movies in a quiet room without having to dial up the volume all the way but not if you're outdoors for that i definitely use earpods my favorite ipad accessory ever has to be the apple pencil 2. the first generation pencil still exists and works only with the entry-level ipad but i really love this one one because of how it feels the matte rubbery finish makes it easy to grip and i love how it magnetically just snaps onto the side of the ipad to pair and to charge if you have it on this way it's always charged by the way this pen doesn't come bundled with your ipad it's a 129 optional purchase but definitely worth every penny and it really makes the ipad more useful the ipad has great palm rejection so even if your palms are leaning on it it doesn't affect the experience whether you're taking down notes and notability i'm always creating a list of some sort journaling using zinnia or using the digital whiteboard explain everything the apple pencil 2 is a tool you'll always want to use one accessory though that's notoriously missing is a keyboard case of some sort something like the folio keyboard or the magic keyboard that's available for the other ipads it's not that bluetooth keyboards aren't supported because it is it's really more about size you see all keyboard cases apple makes for its other ipads are more or less full-sized keyboards having to shrink down the keys is not really something i expect apple to do i'm sure logitech might make one i've been using their keys to go product and it's all right for short bursts when some typing is needed and it's pretty portable i have the folio cover for my ipad mini and doubles as a stand for propping it up not just for watching videos but also for typing if you're going to be typing for longer sessions and are looking for an ipad that can also serve as a laptop replacement i'd consider at least an ipad air with maybe a magic keyboard trust me you'll benefit from a bigger screen and a much better keyboard now let's talk about that display for a bit ipads come in all sorts of sizes from 8.3 inches this ipad mini all the way up to 12.9 the larger of the two ipad pros picking a size boils down to how you intend on using your ipad if you're like me and want an ipad for books magazines or comics as well as a handy dandy digital notebook the mini is the perfect size maybe one day the bezels get even smaller so that we get an even bigger display without increasing the physical size of the device itself but some bezels are great for playing games speaking of i enjoyed gaming on this machine i think like reading because it's not so big and heavy i didn't mind holding it for prolonged gaming sessions speaking of i've been thinking of just watching youtube videos in bed on this device instead of my phone sometimes i mosey around the house watching videos on my phone and i think it's because mainly of how portable it is now let me know if you're the same by leaving a comment down below that said i will say magazines look better on a larger display and if you think you'll be watching more movies or tv shows on your ipad than say reading go for the ipad air creatives who need a lot of screen real estate don't mind that the ipad pro is huge because that works for them because the display is also their canvas that said not all displays are built the same the ipad mini like the air has an ips lcd display while the ipad pro line has pro motion technology what does this mean just that the pros display are of course better higher resolution deeper blacks richer colors lots of dynamic range and faster refresh rates things that pro users care about now that's not to say that the ipad mini has a bad display in fact apple has had a long-standing reputation of putting really good displays on its devices now as a result of the faster refresh rates apple is also able to bring down the latency on the ipad pro to 9 milliseconds which i always refer to as the gold standard and because i use my apple pencil a lot it's one feature that i wish they'd bring down to the mini and the air that said if you're not used to it you probably won't be able to notice it and like i said in the previous section you'll enjoy note-taking and scribbling on the ipad mini apple sells wi-fi only versions of the ipad mini but if you're out and about a lot and are willing to pay for what's usually a 10 extra on top of your monthly cellular bill then consider getting the cellular model which comes with a sim card tray the ipad mini supports only the sub 6 standard which only affects verizon users in the us if you're one of them this just means there's no support for millimeter wave which is faster but requires that you be at an exact spot for it to work otherwise if you live elsewhere in the world or not a verizon customer then this should not affect you one bit before i go it would be remiss of me not to point out how the ipad mini is used by other people particularly in a work setting i've seen it used by delivery people inside airplanes and in hospitals and this is a testament to a community of amazing developers whose apps have given hardware like the ipad mini purpose in multiple fields oh one more example chai and i were having brunch the other day in between filming my gold iphone 13 pro and boxing which you can watch by clicking up here the waitress at our restaurant used an old ipad mini to take our orders it also had some contraption that allowed her to swipe my card when we were checking out i assume the mini is their choice because of its size when you have to carry the device around all day you probably don't want a bigger ipad air my point being the ipad mini as small as it might be is powerful enough to do work stuff too regardless of what you do so is the 2021 ipad mini your gadget match i guess i've kind of answered this question already starting at 4.99 the ipad mini is probably the best value for money ipad apple currently offers if you don't need a big display but want a powerful tablet that allows you to enjoy the best of what an ipad has to offer this is it i'm a believer the ipad mini deserves the gadget match seal of approval and it goes on sale starting this friday and that was our 2021 ipad mini review it's been a crazy week with a lot of videos already published and more that are yet to come you don't want to miss a single one so make sure you're this mean just that the pros display are of course better higher resolution deeper blacks richer colors lots of dynamic range and faster refresh rates things that pro users care about now that's not to say that the ipad mini has a bad display in fact apple has had a long-standing reputation of putting really good displays on its devices now as a result of the faster refresh rates apple is also able to bring down the latency on the ipad pro to 9 milliseconds which i always refer to as the gold standard and because i use my apple pencil a lot it's one feature that i wish they'd bring down to the mini and the air that said if you're not used to it you probably won't be able to notice it and like i said in the previous section you'll enjoy note-taking and scribbling on the ipad mini apple sells wi-fi only versions of the ipad mini but if you're out and about a lot and are willing to pay for what's usually a 10 extra on top of your monthly cellular bill then consider getting the cellular model which comes with a sim card tray the ipad mini supports only the sub 6 standard which only affects verizon users in the us if you're one of them this just means there's no support for millimeter wave which is faster but requires that you be at an exact spot for it to work otherwise if you live elsewhere in the world or not a verizon customer then this should not affect you one bit before i go it would be remiss of me not to point out how the ipad mini is used by other people particularly in a work setting i've seen it used by delivery people inside airplanes and in hospitals and this is a testament to a community of amazing developers whose apps have given hardware like the ipad mini purpose in multiple fields oh one more example chai and i were having brunch the other day in between filming my gold iphone 13 pro and boxing which you can watch by clicking up here the waitress at our restaurant used an old ipad mini to take our orders it also had some contraption that allowed her to swipe my card when we were checking out i assume the mini is their choice because of its size when you have to carry the device around all day you probably don't want a bigger ipad air my point being the ipad mini as small as it might be is powerful enough to do work stuff too regardless of what you do so is the 2021 ipad mini your gadget match i guess i've kind of answered this question already starting at 4.99 the ipad mini is probably the best value for money ipad apple currently offers if you don't need a big display but want a powerful tablet that allows you to enjoy the best of what an ipad has to offer this is it i'm a believer the ipad mini deserves the gadget match seal of approval and it goes on sale starting this friday and that was our 2021 ipad mini review
