It's Monday, May 9th, 2016, and with privacy being a white hot topic lately, the makers of Opera, the number 6 browser in terms of usage, have seen fit to put a free virtual private network (VPN) in their iOS app. According to Opera, this new feature does a lot more than just prevent trackers from following you around the web and let you access blocked websites. It also allows you to change your virtual location by connecting to one of the five regions and borrowing an IP address from that area. This means you can browse away from spots in the US, Canada, Germany, Singapore, or the Netherlands, among other locations.
Opera says that more locations are coming soon, which is exciting news for those looking to expand their online freedom. Both the browser and app were built by Surf Easy, a VPN company that Opera acquired last year. So, how will they make money? According to Opera, yes, there will eventually be ads on the app. Don't worry, Android users – don’t fret! There’s an Android version coming soon as well.
As we're seeing more and more companies incorporating virtual private networks (VPNs) into their apps, it's becoming clear that these tools are going to play a bigger role in our online lives. Facebook is leading the charge with its messenger bot, which works like this: if you want to talk to Facebook about a minor business dealing, you can get the conversation started through the messenger app by talking to a bot. This raises an inevitable question – will all these chatbots take the place of jobs currently occupied by actual humans? After all, a chatbot that helps you set up ads on Facebook if it works as desired is a whole lot cheaper than a spendy human that needs vacations, a 401k, and gallbladder surgery. The trend is gaining steam, with Forbes having a bot on the Telegram app, news curating bots, and now there’s an agency in Switzerland that will make you a bot.
Even big companies like McDonald's are experimenting with bots based kiosks to order up your Big Mac and fries. What's powering all these bots? New and stronger AI systems, that's what. Stay tuned – this is about to get really interesting.
