Adding and Removing Gadgets from Windows Vista Sidebar
When it comes to personalizing your Windows Vista sidebar, one of the most exciting features is the ability to add and remove gadgets. In this tutorial, we'll show you how to easily install new gadgets and remove old ones.
First things first, let's take a look at what's already in our sidebar. As you can see, there are several gadgets already installed, including stocks and feed headlines that I haven't actually added yet. These gadgets can be dragged into any place in the sidebar by simply clicking and holding them, letting go, and they're instantly in there.
As you may have noticed, some of these gadgets are already familiar to us. For example, this is a contacts gadget, which was already installed when I had Windows Vista on my computer. There's also an "exit" gadget that can be removed by right-clicking on it.
But what about all the cool gadgets we've seen floating around? Maybe you want a weather gadget or a CPU usage/ram usage monitor. The good news is that installing new gadgets is as easy as clicking on the "Get More Gadgets" button. This will open up your default web browser (in my case, Safari) and take you to the Windows website, where you can search for more gadgets.
One of the most popular types of gadgets are top-rated gadgets, which have been handpicked by Microsoft themselves. There's also a "top-down" section that features gadgets in no particular order. I'll show you an example of how to install a gadget using one of these options. Let's say we want to get a Vista Calculator gadget and place it right between the Google and stock gadgets.
To start, we simply click on the gadget we're interested in, which will open up its webpage. This is where you can learn more about the gadget and whether or not it's free. In this case, the calculator is indeed free, but there may be some requirements or setup needed before we can install it.
Once we've confirmed that the gadget is okay to download, we hit the "install" button. This will take us straight to the download page for the gadget. We're presented with a prompt asking us to only install applications from developers we trust. Since this is a Microsoft-developed gadget, I'm sure I can trust it.
We click on the "Install Now" button, and after a few seconds, we're told that the installation has been successful. The gadget has now been added to our sidebar, and we can move it around as needed. We can also remove it by right-clicking on it and selecting "Remove".
Now that we have a new gadget installed, let's take a look at some of the other features available in our sidebar. As you can see, there are several options available, including changing the display settings for certain gadgets. These settings can be accessed by clicking on the "wrench" icon (which stands for "settings") next to each gadget.
For example, I want to change the temperature unit from Fahrenheit to Celsius for my weather gadget. We simply click on the wrench icon, and a menu appears that allows us to adjust various settings for the gadget. In this case, we can toggle between Fahrenheit and Celsius, enter our city's latitude and longitude (which updates the weather map), and even choose whether or not to display humidity data.
And finally, let's talk about removing gadgets from our sidebar. As you can see, I've removed one of my old gadgets, which was replaced by a new one when we installed the Vista Calculator. To remove a gadget altogether, we simply right-click on it and select "Remove". It's that easy!
If you're feeling adventurous and want to explore some more gadgets, I recommend searching for "blah" (you can't really search for anything in particular - just type away!)-and see what comes up. There are many useful gadgets out there that can enhance your Windows Vista experience.
In conclusion, adding and removing gadgets from our Windows Vista sidebar is a breeze. With these simple steps, you'll be able to customize your sidebar with all sorts of cool new gadgets in no time. So don't be afraid to experiment - try out some different gadgets and see what works best for you!
