Better Late Than Never: Tesla's Refreshed Model 3 Highland
Better late than never has seemingly become the mantra for the folks over at Tesla, and this applied immensely to the Cyber trucks roll out here in the states. It also applies to the refreshed model 3 codenamed Highland, while the rest of the world got the Deets on their iteration earlier in 2023. We didn't get anything until January of 2024, why no one really knows, but it's here so let's talk about those changes.
Starting with the design, the front end has ditched the round bubbly look for a sharper nose that kind of reminds me of Sony's Vision S01 sedan concept from a few years back. This enables a drop in the coefficient of drag from 225 to 219 making it the most aerodynamic Tesla on the market. The headlights are also slimmer with a more pronounced LED daytime running light signature. If you're a fan of this new look, let us know in the comments, as it might be hard to tell but Tesla says in fact that the rest of the sheet and metal save for the doors and the rear fender have actually been tweaked to improve this efficiency number.
Out back, the tail lights are also redesigned and have been given The Lobster Claw treatment, which is a fad that I thought we kind of already got past but Tesla has embraced it here. There were also new wheel designs and new paint colors inside Tesla made some solid updates in both the look and feel Department. More sound-deing materials have been added, and acoustic laminated windows can now be found in both the front and the back. The steering wheel has been redesigned and loses the multi-function stocks from the original, now for example if you want to shift the car you actually have three unconventional options to choose from either the main Center touchcreen, the buttons on the top console by the hazard button, or with the still in beta predictive gear selection.
This was first seen on the model S and the model X, and it's pretty controversial because it's just basically supposed to evaluate your surroundings and read your mind essentially to predict the next gear you're going to want to shift into. I would love to see this in action during a three-point turn, don't know about you. Also borrowed from its older siblings is the new touchcreen for the rear passengers that is integrated into the front center console. You can use it to adjust the climate, move the front passenger seat, watch video content, or even play games.
The model 3 suspension has been updated, with there being new adaptive dampers and other changes that help reduce vibration and improve refinement. The batteries and Motors however have not been changed for now, you can only get the three in the carryover single motor rear wheel drive variant, or the dual motor all-wheel drive long range variant. The former now does 272 Mi of vpa rated range, the latter 341 that one will serve as the quickest model 3 for now with a 0 to 60 time of 4.2 seconds until the updated performance model is released. Current rumors suggest that the new performance model will be more hardcore than the current one and will look a lot different compared to the regular model 3s.
That's just about sums up the changes, let us know if you are a fan of what Tesla did here and if you think these were worth the wait. If you want a model 3, you can order one now, and it should be at your driveway within the next month or two.
