The Importance of Nutrition and Lifestyle Choices: A Balanced Approach
When it comes to nutrition and lifestyle choices, there's no one-size-fits-all solution. What works for one person may not work for another, and it's essential to approach these decisions with a balanced perspective. As someone who has been reading about different diets and lifestyles, I've come across two popular approaches that have sparked my interest: keto and intermittent fasting.
When it comes to keto, I believe it can be a viable option for some people, particularly those who are dealing with certain health issues such as cancer. Cancer feeds on sugar, and the keto diet helps the body burn fat instead of sugar, which means it's not providing fuel for cancer cells. However, I think going with an extreme approach to keto may not be the best way to start. Instead, I believe in taking a more gradual and balanced approach that allows the body to adjust and find what works best for each individual.
Similarly, when it comes to intermittent fasting, I think it can serve as a useful tool for jump-starting a diet or improving overall health. However, my biggest issues with intermittent fasting are maintenance and potential negative effects on certain individuals. I worry that some people may view intermittent fasting as a quick fix or a way to "diet" without addressing the underlying habits and relationships with food that can lead to unhealthy eating patterns.
I also believe that the focus on aesthetics in the intermittent fasting community can be problematic. People often present themselves as eating healthy, but then indulge in junk food later in the day, which can be detrimental to overall health. Instead of focusing on how much we're eating or when we're eating it, I think we should focus on what's actually going into our bodies and making sure that those foods are nutrient-dense and beneficial for us.
Another concern I have with intermittent fasting is its potential impact on individuals who struggle with food insecurity or disordered eating. Forcing oneself to fast or starve can create unhealthy habits and a poor relationship with food, which can be particularly problematic for people who already struggle with these issues. As someone who wants to promote healthy lifestyle choices that are maintainable for life, I believe it's essential to approach intermittent fasting with caution and consider individual needs.
Ultimately, my message is that there's no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to nutrition and lifestyle choices. What works for one person may not work for another, and it's essential to find a balance that allows each individual to thrive. By focusing on nutrient-dense foods, balanced eating habits, and sustainable lifestyle choices, I believe we can promote overall health and well-being without resorting to extreme or restrictive approaches.
In conclusion, while keto and intermittent fasting may have their benefits, they should be approached with caution and considered in the context of individual needs and circumstances. By prioritizing balance, sustainability, and whole-food diets, I believe we can promote healthier lifestyle choices that benefit both body and mind.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey guys Sarah grace here and today I want to talk to you about ketogenic diets and intermittent fasting I get asked on a pretty regular basis what are my thoughts about keto and what are my thoughts about intermittent fasting I know that they are two really hot kind of topics right now so I figured I would discuss them with you all so for those of you that may not know keto is basically burning fat for energy so instead of burning carbohydrates as your number one source of energy you are burning fat for energy now we've always been told that carbohydrates are the number one source of energy they are the easiest for our body to recruit for energy but now we are finding that we can actually use fats more for energy but only when your diet is a certain way with intermittent fasting it's basically where you take the entire morning some people go into like 2 p.m. in the afternoon without eating anything just drinking fluids and then you eat your calories from 2 p.m. in the afternoon until like say 8 or 9 p.m. at night before you go to bed so there's a whole long morning early afternoon period where you're not eating and you're working out and you're going about your day burning fat for energy is a really good thing for your body and having fat as your number one source of energy that you are utilizing is awesome that being said it is hard to get into ketosis and stay in ketosis for an extended period of time it is hard for your average person to get there and continue that as a lifestyle so it's not impossible but what I'm finding people are doing is basically they are like okay I'm going to eat high fat foods and I'm going to cut out all carbohydrates especially starchy carbs but they're not careful about where their fats are coming from so again getting back to the point of hell is it healthy is it good for your body internally and is it maintainable it's important when you choose a nutrition plan that you are thinking about okay what am I actually putting in my body from an ingredient standpoint or from where I am getting my food sourcing my food from so there's people who are like alright I'm gonna do keto and they go out and they find just high fat whatever they can and they don't look at what they're putting in their body for instance they may be consuming vegetable oils they may be consuming a ton of processed cheese cream cheese sour cream all of those things they're getting commercial dairy products not not thinking about organic non-gmo or where they're getting their foods from so there are still a point that needs to be made that you still have to be careful about where you're sourcing your food from and that you're being aware of what you're putting in your body commercial dairy is really not good for anybody it causes a lot of irritants for people so just because it might fit in with keto it doesn't mean that you should be eating it vegetable oils I mean they are highly toxic and rancid and just going and consuming those oils because they're considered fats also not healthy so number one we really need to look at where we are getting our foods from and what is actually in them and then number two isn't maintainable for life and that's what I always try to preach to people is pick something that you know you can do and you can stick with it you have a job you have travel you have life you don't have a chef you're not a celebrity probably you know all those things play a role so it needs to be something that you can do and you know that you can maintain it when you take a trip when you go about your day with your work with your kids whatever it may be and so I find for a lot of people that picking a diet like a ketogenic diet is gonna be something hard that for them to mean on a daily basis so I always recommend to people to find a healthy balance eat some of your carbohydrates but just don't eat processed once and eat them in moderation at the right time of the day that being said I just got this book keto for cancer I'm about to dive into this book because I want to hear what they say because I think that in instances where you're dealing with a major health crisis like cancer like type-2 diabetes or if you are obese severely overweight that taking the steps to do an extreme diet that requires a lot of effort and work on your part is worth it but there is a time and place for that sort of thing so I'm gonna be reading this book and I'll weigh in with you guys later on what I thought of this book and some of the things that I picked up from it but in a situation like this I think going with a more extreme approach is the way to go and so I'm interested to see what they have to say about keto because we know that cancer feeds on sugar and keto basically you know gets you burning and using fat so obviously you're not feeding cancer at that point so I'm really anxious to kind of dive into this and see so there's no one-size-fits-all to nutrition and it's really about what works for you what makes you feel the best and so you have to decide that for yourself but ultimately what no matter what you decide to do you need to make sure that what you are consuming on a daily basis is healthy nutritious it's nutrient dense food and that you know that you are being careful about where you are sourcing it from and the ingredients are going to be good for you so now on to intermittent fasting with intermittent fasting I believe again that it does serve a purpose and it can be good to get the body jump-started and to maybe start a diet so to speak for somebody who is dealing with something like severe obesity cancer that sort of thing my biggest issues with intermittent fasting are number one again is it maintainable for life is it something that you can do day in and day out and feel good doing it number two I see all these people going around kind of pushing intermittent fasting and and it's what they do and they're not eating all morning long and then they show themselves eating like Reese's and you know candy ice cream whatever they can get their hands on from that later period in the day I look at that and I'm like okay that's not healthy is anybody addressing the fact that that isn't healthy just because you can eat your calories doesn't mean that you should be eating them from anywhere because that can cause health problems and if the whole point of starting a nutrition plan in a diet to begin with is to get healthy then why are you eating garbage food that just doesn't make sense to me it's because a lot of the times the focus is strictly on aesthetics I look good so therefore I am healthy that is not the case you can look good but be internally basically dying inside and it will manifest itself eventually in the form of disease autoimmune disease you know all kinds of issues whether it be anxiety depression type 2 diabetes cancer fibromyalgia chronic fatigue there's so many things that I can list and so it's really important to be aware of what you're putting in your body so that's number two number three is my issue with intermittent fasting is what about the people who maybe have issues with not eating enough and that's been their biggest problem I'm not just talking about say anorexic or bulimic who have disorders with their food but like what about somebody who you know is used to not eating enough enough protein enough car and so they're they're basically like that skinny fat so to speak I think that telling somebody not to eat all morning and going about their day that can really create you know bad habits with food and it can also create a poor relationship with food because you're basically like forcing yourself to fast or starve almost for that period of time and then you're going and binging on food and so I think it really people need to be careful about how they're presenting intermittent fasting and how to who they're presenting it to again there's no one-size-fits-all and so for some people that type of diet could actually be dangerous for them and again it's not necessarily something that's healthy and maintainable for life the same thing I said with keto I would say for intermittent fasting that if you're in the care of a practitioner and you have a major health problem that's doing something like that more of an extreme type of diet is something that I am a proponent of and that I think that there's a time and place for it but I like to teach and show people how to maintain healthy diet lifestyle forever and what you can do on a daily basis to be healthy you don't have to do anything extreme and so that's kind of my message that I like to push to people and so it's about finding balance really so that's my take on keto and intermittent fasting feel free to comment below if you guys have any thoughts on this topic if you have any questions I welcome your feedback and I'm sure I will get some people who are very passionate about the topic as I always do especially when it comes to certain diet and lifestyle choices these are things that people feel strongly about but it's why I'm here comment below and as
