**Google I/O 2019: Android O Beta Preview Released**
The Google I/O conference took place recently, and it was filled with exciting announcements from Google. The first developer preview for Android O was released, bringing several new features to users. One of the most notable features is the ability to long press an icon and then check a notification. This feature, called Notification Dot, allows users to quickly access their notifications without having to open the app.
Another feature announced during the conference is the Pixel Launcher's improved icon selection options. Users can now select their icon shapes, which adds a bit of customization to their home screen. Additionally, the Pixel Launcher now has an option to adjust the intensity of the nightlight feature, allowing users to personalize their display settings.
Google Play Protect was also announced as part of the Android O beta preview. This new feature is built directly into the system and provides users with information about which apps have been recently scanned for malware. Users can turn off this feature if they prefer not to see it.
One of the most exciting features announced during the conference is Smart Text Selection. In future releases of Android, users will be able to double tap on names, addresses, and phone numbers to select the entire text. This feature makes it easy to copy and paste, and there may even be contextual options available, such as opening maps if the address is selected.
**Under the Hood: Developer Dashboard and More**
In addition to these user-facing features, Google also announced several under-the-hood changes. The new developer dashboard in the Play Store provides more accurate information about when apps crash or consume too much battery. Developers will be able to see a list of crashes and battery issues for their apps, allowing them to identify and fix problems.
TensorFlow Lite was also announced as a new tool for developers. This allows users to play with machine learning a bit easier, making it more accessible to those who want to experiment with AI.
**APIs and Improvements**
There were several API updates announced during the conference, including multi-display support, new media playback code, and new media recording code. Additionally, there were improvements made to text auto-sizing, accessibility options, and other features that will make Android O even more user-friendly.
Furthermore, Google announced a new initiative called Vitals, which aims to reduce resource usage by background applications. This includes optimizations for location pinging and faster app loading times. The goal is to make Android O even more efficient and responsive.
**Next Steps**
The first developer preview of Android O was released, but it's not yet ready for prime time. Google has stated that the next Developer Preview will be available in a few months' time, which should include all of the API updates and features that were announced today.
