Apple's Two New Phones: The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus
Apple has released two new phones, the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus, both measuring 4.7 inches and 5.5 inches respectively. These devices are bigger than their predecessors and Apple hopes they will surpass them in terms of performance and features. In recent years, Apple has not been very innovative with its phone models, so it was expected that this time around, the company would come out swinging.
The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus look significantly different from each other despite being two sides of the same coin. The main difference is that the iPhone 6 Plus is a larger device. Apple has made some accommodations to ensure that these phones do not feel too large in the hand. One notable feature is called "reachability," which allows users to double-touch on the home button, effectively lowering the entire screen so they can access keys and information on top of the screen without having to move their hand.
Additionally, Apple has moved the Sleep/Awake button to the side, making it easier for users to reach without having to tap on the top. Both devices are thinner than the existing iPhone 5S, measuring 6.9mm and 7.1mm respectively. The screens used in these phones are new and improved displays that Apple calls "retina HD." These displays have resolutions of 1334 x 750 pixels for the iPhone 6 and 1920 x 1080 pixels for the iPhone 6 Plus.
These displays use a technology called dual-domain pixels, which allow for wider viewing angles. The cameras in these phones are also new and improved, featuring something called "Focus pixels" that Apple claims allows users to focus on objects almost twice as fast as before. The iPhone 6 has Digital Image stabilization, while the iPhone 6 Plus takes it a step further with Optical image stabilization, which is becoming increasingly common among smartphones.
The cameras are one of the key features highlighted by Apple in the new phones. The company claims that the improved camera technology will greatly reduce noise and low-light situations. However, it remains to be seen how these improvements perform in real-world conditions when the phones are put through testing.
Another significant feature of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus is their built-in NFC nearfield communication. This technology has been present on many competing phones for years but Apple has now integrated it into its new devices. What makes this feature stand out, however, is the system called "Apple Pay." This system allows users to pay with their phone using a simple transaction process.
All that needs to be done is take a picture of the credit card stored in the device's wallet and import it into the phone without having to physically insert the card. Apple claims that they are not retaining any information on the phone, instead, this is entirely between the user and the retailer or bank involved in the transaction.
The iPhone 6s both come with an updated A8 chip that features a 64-bit architecture and a new M8 motion co-processor. The company states that this should deliver performance similar to the original iPhone but significantly improved graphics processing capabilities, with up to 84 times better performance compared to the previous model.
Battery life has been a long-standing issue for Apple's iPhones, and the company is now claiming they have addressed it in these new models. Both phones are said to have an upgrade in battery capacity that results in extended usage on 3G networks. The iPhone 6 is expected to achieve up to 14 hours of talk time and the iPhone 6 Plus up to 24 hours.
The devices will be available for purchase in three different storage capacities: 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB, with a new 32GB version replacing the previous 5S model. The prices for these new iPhones are $1999 for the standard model, and $299 on contract for the larger iPhone 6 Plus.
Overall, Apple has made significant improvements in its latest offerings of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. With better cameras, improved performance, enhanced battery life, and innovative features like NFC nearfield communication and "Apple Pay," these new phones seem set to revolutionize the smartphone market once again.
