The Reality of Sponsored Videos in BookTube: A Personal Perspective
I've been making sponsored videos on my channel for a while now, and I have to say, it's been an eye-opening experience. My first sponsored video request came in when I had about 10,000 subscribers, but there were other people on the same exact campaign making the same video who had more than 100,000 subscribers, and I'm fairly certain that they were being paid more than me. This made me wonder if my subscriber count was the determining factor in my rates.
I've also seen my rates from a company increase as my subscriber count has been increasing, but again, I really can't say for sure that it's specifically based on my following. They might just have had more money for a certain release and not enough budget for another one. The most important part of this is that it varies - I've seen this happen multiple times, and it's become a bit of an unpredictable beast in the world of sponsored videos.
There are people in our community who judge booktubers for making sponsored videos because they think the going rate in our community is $10,000 for 100,000 views. This estimate seems utterly ridiculous to me, not just for its accuracy but also for its fairness. There isn't a single booktuber who reaches an average of 100,000 views per video; the most popular ones gain around 40,000 to 60,000 views per video.
Even if we were to divide that estimate in half and say that for every 50,000 views a booktuber gets $5,000, it still seems like a stretch. About 8-10 booktubers are invited on a campaign even if you were to pay each of them only $1,000, which would be around $110,000 for those 10 videos. This is a significant amount of money, but it's just a tiny fraction of the overall marketing budget.
A lot of people don't understand how publishing works, and it seems like this lack of understanding contributes to the unrealistic expectations surrounding sponsored videos. For example, $10,000 can sometimes be a book's entire marketing budget. That means arcs, swag, sponsored posts on Facebook, advertising - all these things go into a marketing budget, and it's hard for me to believe that half of that would just be handed over to one person for one video.
In reality, my rates are usually around a few hundred dollars per video, which is still significant but nowhere near the $10,000 estimate. I'm not saying that booktubers can't make thousands of dollars from sponsored videos; there might be some people who do so. However, from my personal experience, it seems like an unlikely scenario.
I wanted to make this video because I think it's fair for viewers and booktubers alike to understand how sponsored videos work. As the community grows, it becomes increasingly important that we have open and honest discussions about these topics. I've always been someone who prefers to tackle hot topics rather than staying quiet, even if they might be uncomfortable.
If you have any other questions or concerns regarding the content of this video, please don't hesitate to ask. I'll do my best to provide answers and insights into the world of sponsored videos in BookTube. What do you guys think about sponsored videos? Do you think booktubers should make money from them? Should they make more money for certain types of videos or not? Or does it not influence your viewing habits in any way? Your opinions are welcome, so let me know in the comments below.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey what's up hello my name is Emma and today I'm going to be talking about what is kind of like a taboo topic on here and that is booktubers and money I need to preface this video by saying that this is not a how-to guide on how you can make money on book I personally don't think that anyone should join this community with the sole intention of getting free books from Publishers or possibly making money off of your videos if that happens to you along the way that is super cool but either way even if you don't you get to talk about books on the internet so it's kind of like a win-win situation for everyone involved the reason I want to make this video is I feel like a lot of people that are involved in this community whether you are just a viewer whether you are a booktuber yourself or you're somebody that likes to watch book just to judge us a lot of people don't actually understand the role that money plays in our community I think as viewers you guys deserve to know what goes on behind the scenes and have a better understanding of what you're watching even if that means an uncomfortable topic for some and I think as new booktubers you guys deserve some guidance on how to navigate a situation that might present itself to you in the future I used have a Blog that I updated like twice and one of those posts was titled Dead Presidents for dead trees clever title I know and it was just all about how nobody in the community ever talks about how money works here and so it was just really difficult for me as a newer booktuber delving into the world of publishing and sponsorships and different ways to make money without any sort of idea of what was normal or what was good or what to stay away from so I'm hoping by taking this video to explain the different ways that booktubers make money it will eventually lead to people having a better understanding of the topic and really hopefully y stop so many false assumptions about it now I really feel like this should be a given someone's going to say something so I have to put the disclaimer here that this is entirely based off of my own experiences the research that I've done on this topic and talking to other people involved in this community about making money you might have had a different experience with money on book and that is totally fine I am not saying that anything I discuss in this video is the end all and the only way that I can go this is just what I know and I choose to talk about the only things that I know and not the stuff don't know so to end this really long-winded intro this is a informational video not a how-to guide and it's based solely off of what I personally know from my own experiences the first and easiest way to make money on book is obviously Google AdSense all of us here are familiar with pre video ads and I'm pretty sure everyone knows that by allowing a company to place an ad before your video the YouTuber is going to gain some sort of payment from that actually you only receive a fraction of the money you make from the ads and the rest goes to Google I've seen a few varying numbers with this but a rough estimate would be that the Creator takes home about 68% of AD revenue and Google takes the remaining 32% now if you're also signed with a multi-channel network they might actually take 20 to 30% of that 68% so you could potentially only be coming home with about 40% of the money you made on your ads this is an important one to know about because number one we are virtually exposed to it on every single video we watch number two it is the easiest way to make money on YouTube because the only thing you have to do is Click monetize and number three it is much easier for smaller channels to make money this way compared to things like sponsorships that are generally reserved for people with a larger following I'm fairly certain that if there is a quota it's only like 500 subscribers that you need to have to monetize your videos so essentially almost anyone who starts a channel and gains that small of a following can start making money on YouTube right off the bat therefore it's definitely the most widely used among YouTubers to make money and it is way less based on following than a lot of other ways basically the way it works is you create a Google AdSense account that is connected to your YouTube channel you go into your video manager you click monetize on whatever videos you want to monetize a company therefore has permission to place ads either before your video or in between certain sections of your video depending on how many you place there you receive some form of payment on that based off of how many clicks you either get on these specific ads or Impressions on that video let me just say unless you are somebody with like 100,000 subscribers you really do not make that much on Google AdSense to even get paid every month cuz it is a once a month payment you have to reach a threshold of at least $100 every single month and if you don't have that big of a following it can be really really hard to reach that threshold because you'll really only be making like a couple of dollars in change on any video you post the thing about AdSense is that as it relies on clicks and Impressions it is extremely inconsistent depending on how well my channel is doing for the month there are some months where I won't have enough views and I won't end up reaching the payment threshold and there are other months where I can make several $100 just by posting videos obviously this is going to follow the trend of the bigger following you have the more money you going to make but it definitely is not the most reliable form of income from YouTube despite it being the most widely used the next way booktubers make money that I want to talk about is affiliate links affiliate links will sometimes be linked in the description of a booktubers video that will take you to a web page that's connected to the booktubers account with that company and if you decide to buy something the booktuber might receive a small amount of payment from your purchase affiliate links are kind of comparable to some discount codes where if a booktuber presents you with a discount code for something like a subscription service or a website the company will be notified anytime somebody uses your coupon code and then you will get money from that instead of having an actual link this does not mean that you being charged anything extra essentially the booktuber is kind of being rewarded by the company by bringing more traffic to their website and generally it's like a 10% commission off of every purchase or sometimes they'll just have a flat rate for everyone who does something through that website popular ones here on book are Book Depository which I'm sure you guys have heard is an online book retailer and audible which is a subscription that gives you access to audiobooks and the reason that these I feel are more popular is because you don't really have to be invited by the company to become an affiliate you just go on their website create a link and then you make money off of just sharing that link Book Depository gives you I believe a 10% commission off of every purchase made through your link and through my research I believe Audible has a few different benefits that you can get like a flat rate for everyone who signs up for either a subscription or a free trial through your link you can get free credits you can get discounts on your subscription etc etc book a sub description Services have also recently been giving out affiliate links and discount codes for the representatives the thing I really want to stress about the words affiliate link and discount code is the booktuber is not necessarily always going to make a commission when that link or code is used it's hard to tell unless the booktuber is going to disclose that they make a commission off of this link or code every single time but I will tell you from experience that this is not an automatic way to get paid affiliate link and discount code are not synonymous with making money and it's ultimately up to the individual company to decide whether they are going to give some sort of payment to the representatives I do have a channel disclaimer that is always linked to my videos if you're ever interested in learning more about how I run my channel in regards to making money working with companies different terms I might use that might not be exactly clear to you and of course we talk about affiliate links and discount codes that I get a commission from but if you don't want to read all of that I will tell you now personally I have about four or five links and codes that are always in the description of my videos the only links that I personally will make commission off of our booked depository as described as before and anything that is done through crate Joy I will receive a 10% Commission on my videos and the way that if you're ever wondering if I'm going to be making money through this affiliate link I believe I put two slash marks next to those links so that's an indicator that I will be getting paid if you decide to make a purchase through that link but when it comes to things like my fair loot code my owl crate code or any code for Books of Wonder Signed pre-orders I make $0 off of those and those are solely to benefit you guys while there are ways to make money through affiliate links and discount codes just be aware that it's not automatic and just because you are supporting this company that a booktuber is recommending to you they are not necessarily being paid I see people assume this all the time and it's really frustrating because the majority of times that I work with companies I don't really get anything out of it other than what they're sending me the next way that booktubers can make money that is probably going to be the longest portion of this video is of course sponsorships I need to start this off by saying that anytime a company or a publisher is going to send you a book or product to promote on your channel it does not necessarily mean you are getting paid 90% of hauls from popular booktubers will include at least once the words I was sent this by the publisher this does not mean that you're being paid to talk about it most booktubers that I watch always disclose if a video is sponsored in the description of their video but if you'd like to distinguish between sponsored videos and videos that contain items that were sent for free I'd recommend looking out for these phrases non-sponsored videos are usually disclosed by saying I was sent this by the company or this company sent me this for a review the keyword here is just sent and nothing more usually if they're stopping there it just means that the company sent the booker product for review just to talk about it and that's the only real compensation they're receiving from doing so for sponsored videos keep an eye out for the very obvious this video is sponsored by or I am working with or I am in partnership with because in my experience those are all ways to disclose that you are being paid for creating that video please stop assuming that anytime a book cheber talks about a book that they were either sent by a publisher or a product they were sent by a company that they are being paid because this is much more common than an actual sponsored video to reiterate the initial disclaimer here again because this is where it's really prominent this is based off of my experiences and any other booktubers that have talked about with this topic to explain how sponsored videos work from start to finish generally you will receive an email from a publisher or somebody in marketing that is asking you to be a part of a campaign for a speciic spefic new release I don't believe I know anyone that has ever claimed to have emailed a publisher themselves saying hey I will talk about this book if you give me money generally it's something that you are invited to do they will ask you to film some kind of video that is centered around this new release whether that means filming a full review for the book doing a tag or a video inspired by their release or what's more commonly seen nowadays is a haul a TBR or a wrap-up being sponsored by a publisher to talk about that specific book in any sponsor video for a book that I have been a part of they've always sent me a copy of the book to hold in the video and then also offered me some kind of monetary compensation for just creating the video in general you'll sign a contract you'll get a book you'll film a video you'll post it you'll get paid I will be talking a little bit about rates for sponsored videos in a minute but I do want to focus on one of the biggest misconceptions about sponsored videos in the book Community thus far everyone and their mother has heard about all the allegations of booktubers who will lie in sponsored videos to make money and keep their relationship with Publishers obviously that is something that only the booktuber creating that video is going to know unless they were to come out and publicly say it it's not really something you can prove either way you really have no evidence stating that they either lied or they're telling the truth it really just comes down to if you trust them or you don't and in my personal opinion if you don't trust them I really don't understand why you're wasting your time watching their videos in the first place but I will say in almost all of the contracts I've ever signed for sponsorships there is always some kind of clause or sentence that states we cannot influence your opinion in any ways so the Publishers make it very clear from the beginning that they have no say in what you post I actually just signed a sponsored video contract about an hour ago and I know it's in here so I'm going to actually read it to you on my phone what it says in this contract this is under the edit section and it says influencer aka me creating the video understands that reasonable edits to their video will be requested when deemed necessary influencer can be assured that any edits will strictly be for factual information based around the release and its brand guidelines and not affect the influencer's personal tone or style that contract is for a spoiler-free sponsored review that I'm going to be doing and the reason it has that section on editing is not because they trying to cut and take out things and kind of formulate my review to what they want it to be it literally means I can't say this is the ending of the book before its release so if I were to have that in a video they'd say you need to cut that out or else we can't pay you it's literally just to stop spoilers they're not going to influence anything else I've never had a company say you you cannot say this and you cannot say that and I've also never submitted a video for a approval to upload and have them say you need to cut that out unless it's a full review because like I said a lot of book hauls and whatnot are actually sponsored now because Publishers have caught on that book hauls get more reviews generally what you're going to be paid for in a sponsored R like that is just to say the book's title the author the release date give a synopsis that's really it that's not really stuff you can lie about cuz you can just find it on Google you can have the argument that would they have picked it up had the publisher not paid them again it comes down to if you trust the book tuber or not because it's not something you're ever really going to know on either side believing a book Cher's opinion on books is entirely up to you nobody has the right to say you have to trust this person or you can't trust this person at all but I can say with sincerity I have never had a publisher or a company influence anything I have ever said on my channel whether I promoting them or not now the rates for sponsor videos very like crazy and are ultimately determined by the publisher or the company themselves I've never ever had to haggle or negotiate a price for myself I have been paid $150 for a 30second shout out in a video and I have been paid $150 for an entire video just dedicated to that one company while I can't exactly say for sure I am fairly certain that it has something to do with your following my first sponsored video request came in when I had about 10,000 subscribers but there were other people on the same exact campaign making the same video who had more than 100,000 subscribers and I am sure that they were being paid more than little old May I've also seen my rates from a company in increase as my subscriber count has been increasing but again I really can't say for sure that it's specifically based on my following they might just have had more money for a certain release and not as big of a budget for another that I was offered the most important part of this is it varies I don't understand why I've seen this as often as I have like one time was more than enough so I don't understand why it's been multiple times but there are people in this community that judge booktubers for making sponsored videos because they think the going rate in our community is $10,000 for 100,000 views that is so unbelievably ridiculous to me for so many reasons first off there isn't a single booktuber who reaches an average of 100,000 views per video the most popular booktubers in our community gain like 40,000 to 60,000 per video Even if you were to divide that estimate in half and say that for every 50,000 views a book tber gets $5,000 that is still such a reach in my experience about 8 to 10 booktubers are invited on a campaign even if you were to pay each of them only $1,000 that still like $110,000 that the company is putting just into these 10 book tube videos I know a lot of people don't understand how publishing works but $10,000 can sometimes be a book's entire marketing budget that means arcs that means swag that means sponsored posts on things like Facebook that means advertising so many things go into a marketing budget and you think that they're going to take half of that and just give it to one person for one video because this varies so much it's so hard for me to give a rough estimate but anyone that I have talked to about how much they were making for a video especially around my subscriber rank it's never more than a few hundred per video yes that is definitely a significant amount of money but nobody is stinking rich off of a Publisher's budget and not taking the sponsorships is not going to really break anyone's pink like I said I can only speak from my personal experience there really could be booktubers in the community that are making thousands of dollars upon a video I just I really cannot see that happening at all the main point is it's not an insane amount of money it's a couple hundred for every video you make and that's really it I think that really wraps up everything I want to say on sponsorships and essentially this video there are obviously other ways for booktubers to make money there are booktubers in the community that have their own merch websites so obviously if you are going to buy some of their merch they are going to receive some sort of compensation from that we have the because you love to Hy villain Anthology coming out that 13 booktubers are involved in and obviously like anyone who was working on a novel they are going to receive some money from that essentially I wanted to make this video to be real with you guys to talk about something that nobody really approaches in the community I just personally don't think it's fair to keep you guys in the dark whether you are a viewer or a booktuber this is something that is a really hot topic in the community as it's growing and I think everyone deserves to understand how this sort of works whether that's only from my personal experience and not from a ton of others I have personally always been one to rather take the incentive to talk about a controversial topic that might make some people upset rather than just keep my mouth shut in this community and so that's really why I want wanted to make this video if you have any other questions on any of the content that was discussed in this video please feel free to ask me and as always I will answer to the best of my ability and if you have anything to say on this topic let me know in the comments below what do you guys think of sponsored videos on book Tu do you think booktubers should make money do you think they shouldn't do you think there are certain videos that they should be making money on and others that they shouldn't or do you not really care but it still influences you in some way or vice versa let me know but that is it for this video thank you guys so much for watching and I will see you soon for new one bye you nowhey what's up hello my name is sponsored videos to make money and keep their relationship with Publishers obviously that is something that only the booktuber creating that video is going to know unless they were to come out and publicly say it it's not really something you can prove either way you really have no evidence stating that they either lied or they're telling the truth it really just comes down to if you trust them or you don't and in my personal opinion if you don't trust them I really don't understand why you're wasting your time watching their videos in the first place but I will say in almost all of the contracts I've ever signed for sponsorships there is always some kind of clause or sentence that states we cannot influence your opinion in any ways so the Publishers make it very clear from the beginning that they have no say in what you post I actually just signed a sponsored video contract about an hour ago and I know it's in here so I'm going to actually read it to you on my phone what it says in this contract this is under the edit section and it says influencer aka me creating the video understands that reasonable edits to their video will be requested when deemed necessary influencer can be assured that any edits will strictly be for factual information based around the release and its brand guidelines and not affect the influencer's personal tone or style that contract is for a spoiler-free sponsored review that I'm going to be doing and the reason it has that section on editing is not because they trying to cut and take out things and kind of formulate my review to what they want it to be it literally means I can't say this is the ending of the book before its release so if I were to have that in a video they'd say you need to cut that out or else we can't pay you it's literally just to stop spoilers they're not going to influence anything else I've never had a company say you you cannot say this and you cannot say that and I've also never submitted a video for a approval to upload and have them say you need to cut that out unless it's a full review because like I said a lot of book hauls and whatnot are actually sponsored now because Publishers have caught on that book hauls get more reviews generally what you're going to be paid for in a sponsored R like that is just to say the book's title the author the release date give a synopsis that's really it that's not really stuff you can lie about cuz you can just find it on Google you can have the argument that would they have picked it up had the publisher not paid them again it comes down to if you trust the book tuber or not because it's not something you're ever really going to know on either side believing a book Cher's opinion on books is entirely up to you nobody has the right to say you have to trust this person or you can't trust this person at all but I can say with sincerity I have never had a publisher or a company influence anything I have ever said on my channel whether I promoting them or not now the rates for sponsor videos very like crazy and are ultimately determined by the publisher or the company themselves I've never ever had to haggle or negotiate a price for myself I have been paid $150 for a 30second shout out in a video and I have been paid $150 for an entire video just dedicated to that one company while I can't exactly say for sure I am fairly certain that it has something to do with your following my first sponsored video request came in when I had about 10,000 subscribers but there were other people on the same exact campaign making the same video who had more than 100,000 subscribers and I am sure that they were being paid more than little old May I've also seen my rates from a company in increase as my subscriber count has been increasing but again I really can't say for sure that it's specifically based on my following they might just have had more money for a certain release and not as big of a budget for another that I was offered the most important part of this is it varies I don't understand why I've seen this as often as I have like one time was more than enough so I don't understand why it's been multiple times but there are people in this community that judge booktubers for making sponsored videos because they think the going rate in our community is $10,000 for 100,000 views that is so unbelievably ridiculous to me for so many reasons first off there isn't a single booktuber who reaches an average of 100,000 views per video the most popular booktubers in our community gain like 40,000 to 60,000 per video Even if you were to divide that estimate in half and say that for every 50,000 views a book tber gets $5,000 that is still such a reach in my experience about 8 to 10 booktubers are invited on a campaign even if you were to pay each of them only $1,000 that still like $110,000 that the company is putting just into these 10 book tube videos I know a lot of people don't understand how publishing works but $10,000 can sometimes be a book's entire marketing budget that means arcs that means swag that means sponsored posts on things like Facebook that means advertising so many things go into a marketing budget and you think that they're going to take half of that and just give it to one person for one video because this varies so much it's so hard for me to give a rough estimate but anyone that I have talked to about how much they were making for a video especially around my subscriber rank it's never more than a few hundred per video yes that is definitely a significant amount of money but nobody is stinking rich off of a Publisher's budget and not taking the sponsorships is not going to really break anyone's pink like I said I can only speak from my personal experience there really could be booktubers in the community that are making thousands of dollars upon a video I just I really cannot see that happening at all the main point is it's not an insane amount of money it's a couple hundred for every video you make and that's really it I think that really wraps up everything I want to say on sponsorships and essentially this video there are obviously other ways for booktubers to make money there are booktubers in the community that have their own merch websites so obviously if you are going to buy some of their merch they are going to receive some sort of compensation from that we have the because you love to Hy villain Anthology coming out that 13 booktubers are involved in and obviously like anyone who was working on a novel they are going to receive some money from that essentially I wanted to make this video to be real with you guys to talk about something that nobody really approaches in the community I just personally don't think it's fair to keep you guys in the dark whether you are a viewer or a booktuber this is something that is a really hot topic in the community as it's growing and I think everyone deserves to understand how this sort of works whether that's only from my personal experience and not from a ton of others I have personally always been one to rather take the incentive to talk about a controversial topic that might make some people upset rather than just keep my mouth shut in this community and so that's really why I want wanted to make this video if you have any other questions on any of the content that was discussed in this video please feel free to ask me and as always I will answer to the best of my ability and if you have anything to say on this topic let me know in the comments below what do you guys think of sponsored videos on book Tu do you think booktubers should make money do you think they shouldn't do you think there are certain videos that they should be making money on and others that they shouldn't or do you not really care but it still influences you in some way or vice versa let me know but that is it for this video thank you guys so much for watching and I will see you soon for new one bye you now\n"
