The HTC Vive: A Comprehensive Unboxing Experience
As I eagerly awaited the arrival of the HTC Vive at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation. And now that it's finally here, I'm excited to dive into an unboxing experience like no other. The first thing I noticed when I opened the box was its size - it's a big one, to say the least. Inside, I found the setup instructions, which will be thoroughly read and understood as we embark on this unboxing journey.
The first component I came across was the Vibe controllers, which initially looked like they belonged in a ball-in-cup game. However, upon closer inspection, I discovered that their design is actually quite functional. The small divots all over them are what the base stations use to bounce infrared light off of them to determine where they are and their orientation. Additionally, the Vibe controllers feature a touch-sensitive trackpad that can be used in various ways, side buttons, a menu button, an up dashboard button, and a trigger underneath. These features will undoubtedly play a significant role in enhancing our overall VR experience.
Moving on, I found the base stations, each of which tracks the affirmation sensors on the controllers and the headset itself to help determine where you are in the room. Both come with power adapters that plug into the back of them, as well as a sync cable to plug them together if they're having difficulty finding one another during setup. To set up the HTC Vive, it's essential to ensure that these components work seamlessly together, which is achieved by using the provided adjustable wall mounts or a tripod - since I prefer not to put holes in my wall at the moment, I opted for the latter.
The link box is perhaps one of the most crucial components of the HTC Vive setup. The headset plugs into it via three cables on one side, while there are also power cable ports, HDMI display ports, and a USB port on the other. All of these cables need to be connected from the link box to the computer, which comes with a power adapter, USB cable, and an HDMI cable. Furthermore, two additional micro-USB cables and two power adapters that resemble phone chargers are included for charging the controllers. Additionally, there's a set of short cable wired headphones for connecting the headset to your ears.
The headset itself is equipped with a face cushion already attached, but it also comes with an alternative one in case you have narrower faces. A microfiber cloth for cleaning the headset lenses is also provided, and I should note that HTC recommends using only this cloth for cleaning purposes. The headset features the same divots used for positioning as the controller's adjustable side straps, ensuring a comfortable fit without the risk of it falling off your face.
And so, our unboxing experience comes to an end for now. In the next video, we'll be diving into what it really takes to set up the HTC Vive and exploring all the possibilities that this incredible technology has to offer. Until then, please let me know in the comments below which other videos you'd like to see with this headset while I have it.
