The Skoda Kodiak: A Practical Family-Friendly SUV?
This is the new Skoda Kodiak and it's a great family-friendly SUV but just how practical is it? Well, I'm going to find out by packing it full of stuff. The Kodiak's boot is absolutely massive, with five seats, you have 720 litres with the seats up and 2065 litres with them folded down. Go for a seven-seater model like this car, and you do lose a bit of space to make room for the third row chairs, with 630 litres with the rear seats folded increasing to 2005 with both row three and two folded.
But these numbers are still big enough for most families' needs when both rows are up. However, there is just 270 liters of space in a seven-seater model which is about the same capacity as a Volkswagen Polo Sloot. This really isn't too bad, though, so you shouldn't be disappointed. The Kodiak's boot has lots of useful features - there's sufficient tethering hooks, a boot light that doubles as a torch, and some underfloor storage with room for the load cover.
The middle row of seats fold three-way, so you can carry longer items but still take two passengers either side. This makes it easy to get in and out of the car, even when they're folded down. And, because there's no boot lid, you don't have to worry about having to climb over it to get to the back seats. Instead, you've got a fairly flat floor that makes loading heavy items a breeze.
So, how much stuff can you cram into the Kodiak? In 72 mode, there's room for a couple of small suitcases and soft bags, so it's more than ideal for shopping. However, if you want to carry some golf clubs, you'll need to fold down the rear seats. But that head unit can still hold pretty much all you could possibly need for a family of five on holiday - or even more! You can fit too large and too small suitcases easily, there's space for two large boxes, three medium boxes, and two small boxes too.
There's also just enough room for a cup of small bags. So it's almost like the Kodiak is saying that you can pack as much as you want in it without worrying about running out of space. When it comes to in-car storage, the use of glovebox is generous enough, but there is a second space above it that's also available for use.
In the front of the car, there's space ahead of the gear lever big enough for a small cubby, and there's also a bin underneath the steering wheel. Behind that, you'll find two little cup holders on either side, as well as a little slot to hold your key in. And if you look in the back doors, you'll find some extra cubbies - these are great places to stash items like toys or other bits and bobs.
The seats themselves in the middle row offer plenty of legroom, with acres of space to stretch out. However, because the center seat isn't raised as high as the others, it's not quite as comfy for the person sitting in that seat when traveling three across. That's a small price to pay, though, especially when you're considering how practical the Kodiak is overall.
The back row of seats are only suitable for children if you slide the middle bench forward a little, which makes knee room okay but headroom always tight for anyone over five days old. If you need to carry seven people regularly, though, there's another option available: a Volkswagen Touran. This one might be slightly more boring looking than the Kodiak, but it's a better choice if you're going to have to transport lots of people.
The good news is that fitting a child seat in the Kodiak is simple - just because they're huge doesn't mean that you can't get them into a car seat. The base of the gap and the ISOFIX mountings are easy to reach behind, so you shouldn't have any trouble getting everything sorted out.
So overall, then, the Skoda Kodiak is a very practical family car. It's got lots of useful features like a big boot and plenty of space for passengers, as well as loads of storage compartments around the cabin. The only minor issue might be that the rear most seat can get a bit cramped when everyone is trying to get out at once - but that's just about it.
