The Seventh Beta of iOS 17: What to Expect and How It May Impact the iPhone 15 Series
Welcome everybody, I'm Andrew here at Apple Insider, and thank you for joining me in this video. Today, we're going to take a closer look at the seventh beta of iOS 17 and what it may reveal about the upcoming iPhone 15 series.
Running the developer beta of iOS 17 on my iPhone 14 Pro, this update clocks in just below 700 megabytes, which isn't the biggest or smallest update that we've found. However, I'm sure Apple is fixing a lot of bugs as we approach release. Let's take a look at some of the changes that have been made so far.
One of the first changes has to do with the mute toggle. With this beta, Apple has returned haptic feedback when you're enabling silent mode versus when you turn it off. Now, when I turn on silent mode, I can hear a series of small taps like "tap tap tap" that only happen when silent mode is enabled. When I turn the switch back in the other direction, nothing happens, and there's no feedback when I'm turning audio off. This new haptic feedback could be designed for the new action button arriving on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Ultra, which will replace the mute toggle and allow you to customize with a variety of different actions, such as toggling mute on and off, running shortcuts, or adjusting screen brightness.
This new feature makes it more understandable when a phone is going from silent mode to audio mode, especially if there was a button added into control center. The addition of haptic feedback could make the iPhone feel more interactive and engaging for users. However, it's worth noting that this feature might be specific to the new action button and may not be available in all aspects of the operating system.
Another change that I've spotted is during a phone call with the last beta, where the N button was moved to the center when you were calling someone. However, when you enabled the keypad, the button was still located on the far right-hand side. With this latest update, Apple has updated the end button to be in the center and the high keypad button is now on the right-hand side. This change means that no matter where you are in a call, whether you're on the main screen or on the keypad screen, the end call button will always be located in the middle.
But what does this mean for the iPhone 15 series? Apple has a pretty cut-and-dry history of its major milestone updates and the beta process. Typically, they include eight betas before releasing an RC (Release Candidate), which is usually announced after their September event. If Apple unveils the iPhone 15 on September 12th, that's when we should expect to see the RC version of iOS 17.
One of the things that will be included in the RC version is information about the new devices, such as the naming scheme and any special features they have that other phones don't. Apple might also include new special effects for the dynamic island with larger bezels or smaller bezels. However, these details are not yet confirmed.
In terms of when we can expect to see the full release of iOS 17, it's likely to be within a week or so after Apple finishes their September event, assuming they hold their event on the 12th. This would mean that the phones will be released to everybody on the 20th or 21st of the month.
