996 vs 992 - How Much Has The Porsche 911 Changed

**A Comparative Analysis of Porsche 911 Generations**

The Porsche 911 is an iconic sports car that has been in production since 1963. Over the years, it has undergone significant changes and improvements, making it a desirable vehicle for many car enthusiasts. In this article, we will delve into the world of Porsche 911 and compare its different generations to understand how they have evolved over time.

**The Porsche 911: A Sympathetic Driving Experience**

I recently had the opportunity to drive a Porsche 996 and was impressed by its sympathetic driving experience. The car's handling and performance are excellent, making it a joy to drive on winding roads or country lanes. However, I couldn't help but notice that it may not be as hardcore as one might expect from a Porsche 911. Nevertheless, it is still a fantastic car that provides an enjoyable driving experience.

**Comparison with the New 992 Generation**

One of the most noticeable differences between the older 996 generation and the newer 992 generation is its size. The new 992 is significantly larger in every dimension compared to the 996, which may make it appear less agile or less hardcore. However, fundamentally, both cars are excellent driving experiences that can be enjoyed on a variety of roads.

**The Evolution of Porsche's Design Philosophy**

Despite the changes in size and design over the years, the fundamental philosophy of Porsche's design has remained largely unchanged. The company has focused on creating a sports car that is both functional and desirable. While new cars are becoming increasingly large, the 911 remains relatively compact compared to other luxury vehicles.

**The New Infotainment System: A Game-Changer**

One area where the newer 992 generation of 911 has made significant changes is in its infotainment system. The Porsche PCCM Plus, also known as Classic Communications Management (CCM), is a new infotainment system that was introduced with the latest 992 models. It offers a range of features, including Apple CarPlay, DAB radio, and Bluetooth connectivity, making it an excellent upgrade over the older systems.

**The Porsche PCCM Plus: A Revolutionary Upgrade**

I had the opportunity to test the Porsche PCCM Plus in my own car, a Porsche 991 Carrera S, and was impressed by its ease of use and intuitive design. The system is incredibly user-friendly, making it accessible to drivers who may not be familiar with modern infotainment systems. It's also beautifully designed, with a range of options for customization.

**The Benefits of the New Infotainment System**

One of the most significant benefits of the Porsche PCCM Plus is its ability to make driving more enjoyable and convenient. With features like Apple CarPlay and DAB radio, drivers can access a wide range of services while on the road, including navigation, music streaming, and hands-free phone calls. This makes it easier to focus on driving and enjoy the experience.

**Conclusion**

In conclusion, the Porsche 911 is an iconic sports car that has evolved over time through various design improvements and technological upgrades. While some changes have been significant, others may seem minor. However, one thing remains certain: the Porsche 911 continues to be a fantastic driving experience that can be enjoyed on a variety of roads.

**A Final Thought**

As a car enthusiast, I must admit that I was initially skeptical about modern infotainment systems in cars. However, my experience with the Porsche PCCM Plus has been nothing short of exceptional. It's made me realize how much it enhances the driving experience and makes modern cars more accessible to drivers who may not be familiar with these features.

**The Future of Porsche**

As we look to the future, it will be interesting to see how Porsche continues to evolve its design philosophy and technological advancements. While some changes may seem radical, others may seem minor. However, one thing remains certain: the Porsche 911 will continue to be a desirable vehicle for many car enthusiasts.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enum hello and all welcome to scene through class welcome back to my porsche 911 now you probably couldn't tell from the shots you've just seen but this car's had some more work done to it it's had an upgrade because yes i've had the porsche classic pccm plus installed now if that means absolutely nothing to you don't worry i'm going to explain everything later in the video but whilst that part was being installed porsche loaned me a brand new manual 992 carrera s and jumping back and forth between the cars was really interesting because fundamentally there's been 20 years of development between the 996 generation 911 like this one and the 992 generation 911 like the one i was loaned so yes in today's video i kind of want to talk about the differences and maybe even some of the similarities between the two cars before then fully explaining this pccm plus unit so whilst i head out of london in search for some twistier country roads i'll show you some footage of that manual 992. now i'm in the game i was on the bench on the bench first i was renting now i'm collecting rent running first with the beamer now i want the bands spending all the back like yeah i go again so that was a few days ago whilst this car was in getting the pccm plus upgrade and had a few hours to have some fun with that manual 992. you join me back in the present day and as you can see i've escaped london so how do the cars compare now i know haters will say though all 911s look the same you can't tell if that's a 996 a 992 or a 70s 911 well haters i would actually say that the 996 and the 992 generation 911 are some of the most unique porsche i've ever made the 996 instantly recognizable from the dodgy fried egg headlights which i've actually come to love but clearly porsche thought were a mistake because they immediately went back to the singular round design for the the later 997 generation and then still today it's that singular round design the 992 instantly recognizable from the rear it's got what i call a fat ass it's big it's bulky it's bulbous but it's modern it's futuristic and it looks different it's quite interesting that they both share that trait of being a little bit unique in their design now there have been two fairly major changes for the 911 over the last 20 years that we have to talk about before we go anywhere firstly the engine because back in the late 90s early 90s your 911 carrera s came with a naturally aspirated flat 6 engine initially a 3.4 liter then later a 3.6 liter that was a very nice low to sevora giving it some in green super nice nowadays the 992 generation 911 career s comes with a three liter turbocharged flat six engine secondly the steering because back in the 996 days you got hydraulically assisted power steering however for the 991 generation 911 porsche introduced electronically assisted power steering it's quite controversial at the time but i think we've all come to realize well it's bloody brilliant like everything poor should do so yes 996 generation hydraulically assisted 992 generation electronically assisted those are the two major changes let's crack on and discuss everything else now it's not going to be the fairest comparison this because whilst the 911 40th anniversary is based on a 996 carrera s i often call it a 996 gts because it's got a load of the sort of fruitiest options we've got the x51 power pack we've got a limited slip diff and a load of other juicy bits that make it well just better than a standard 996 carrera s also this car was made in 2004 so not quite the 20-year gap that i keep talking about but anyway let's get into it because horsepower this car 340 horsepower from its naturally aspirated 3.6 liter engine the new car 440 horsepower a really nice 100 horsepower gain talk a little bit more it's around 150 pounds of torque difference which you would expect from that turbocharged engine it means nor to 60 is decreased by around a second over the 17 brackets 20-year gap porsche claimed that this car can do north 6t in 4.9 seconds whilst the new 992 with a manual gearbox four seconds flat however as you would imagine the 992 is a lot heavier than this car the manual carrera s is the first 992 except the gt3 to be sub at 1500 kilos it's 1480 while this thing 120 kilos lighter 1360 and you notice it you really notice it it feels way more nimble on the road but that's about it in terms of advantages for this thing because whilst the power to weight is actually a bit closer than you might suspect 250 horsepower per tonne for the 911 feared ziggyara 300 horsepower per ton for the 992 carrera s that 992 feels like a rocket ship this thing is no slouch especially when you get it up in the rev range being a naturally aspirated engine you do have to really rev it out it gets up and it flies let's say only 0.9 of a second difference nor to 60. but once that 992 surpasses 60 miles an hour it just keeps going it's demonic it's an absolute machine but also it attacks the road a lot harder i've often said the 992's a bit too bently like a bit too sort of big and bulbous but if anything it's this car that's kind of softer and nicer to be in there it's a lot more road compliant yeah that new car the steering's more precise the suspension feels stiffer obviously loads of different driving modes in the newer cars in this car you just you get in and and go but it's just all just yeah sort of podgy around the edges of this car it's nice it's great it's a sort of sympathetic driving experience but it's maybe not as hardcore as you might expect from a porsche 911 i don't know what your expectations are but fundamentally both cars are fantastic to absolutely plat down a back road or country road or whatever you would call this road it's it's great and the cars are equally as good as each other as you can imagine it's not just weight that the 911 has gained over the last 20 years it's also size the new 992 is pretty much 100 mil bigger in every area over a 996 and when i dropped that off to get the work done to it there was a nearly identically spec'd 992 carrera 4s on the 4 court now these days you don't get sort of narrow body and wide body like you used to do in the 996 generation days where turbos and four wheel drive cars were slightly wider now all 911s are the same size and they're massive at least in comparison to this like a panamera the 992 compared to my 996 then on the flip side all new cars are big these days and the 911 is probably still appropriately sized as a sports car is just gigantic compared to some of its predecessors fundamentally though i don't know if you're kind of getting this but the cars actually haven't changed that much they've just evolved slightly improved in every area over the years but one area which has significantly changed especially in the last year or so is the interior now if you were to climb inside a 996 of 997 or 991 generation 911 i think you might be hard pushed to point out the differences in interior design or layout of those cars fundamentally it all kind of stayed the same for a very long time of course there were upgrades to infotainment systems and certain buttons changed but the basic layout stayed the same until the latest 992 generation because step inside a new 911 oh my god it's a completely different place it's so exciting there's there's new but there's things to learn where's this where's that so the 992 is a huge step forward especially in that infotainment system we now see it across cayenne thaican panamera it's brilliant it's largely touch screen as with so many cars but super easy to use it looks beautiful and it just makes the cars so good to live with day in day out something which you always have to kind of forgo when you looked at buying a classic i'm a huge modern classic obsessive and i just realized i have to concede on tech infotainment systems when buying slightly older cars at least that's usually the case because yes let's come on to it the porsche pccm plus porsche classic communications management essentially that infotainment system because that is not what came with the car when it left the factory whilst it looks perfect completely in period totally appropriate it is not because that's pretty much the same infotainment system i had in the 991 career t i took on drive the world so let me just turn on the ignition and it fires into life a touch screen unit which has apple carplay dab radio bluetooth connectivity all the things which you never usually find in a car from 2004 suddenly all the big adventures that i hope to do with this car at some point in the future have become easier better more enjoyable because i can just have google maps on and focus on driving not having to pull over every two seconds checking where i am i can speak to people on the phone call them up and say hey i'm going to be there in 20 minutes prepare my my flat white it's so good i feel like you might be going sam why are you nerding about this but i i just i can't believe how authentic it looks no one apart from true porsche nerds will know that that didn't come with the car it really triggers my ocd when i film with a dirty car because you can see where i attached the gopros so once i've attached gophers i can't take any photos anymore because it looks crap doesn't it but anyway it's been such an awesome experience comparing generations of the 911 i hope i've shed some light on on how much they've progressed or maybe how little they've progressed know how much they've progressed over the years and i'm so so glad to have that pccm plus unit if you've got this generation of porsche or maybe before check it out i do think it's well worth it as i say just makes the world a more accessible place with your car suddenly so that's going to be good once covered chills out so yes if you've enjoyed the video make sure to give it a thumbs up and stay subscribed for plenty more videos to come ohum hello and all welcome to scene through class welcome back to my porsche 911 now you probably couldn't tell from the shots google maps on and focus on driving not having to pull over every two seconds checking where i am i can speak to people on the phone call them up and say hey i'm going to be there in 20 minutes prepare my my flat white it's so good i feel like you might be going sam why are you nerding about this but i i just i can't believe how authentic it looks no one apart from true porsche nerds will know that that didn't come with the car it really triggers my ocd when i film with a dirty car because you can see where i attached the gopros so once i've attached gophers i can't take any photos anymore because it looks crap doesn't it but anyway it's been such an awesome experience comparing generations of the 911 i hope i've shed some light on on how much they've progressed or maybe how little they've progressed know how much they've progressed over the years and i'm so so glad to have that pccm plus unit if you've got this generation of porsche or maybe before check it out i do think it's well worth it as i say just makes the world a more accessible place with your car suddenly so that's going to be good once covered chills out so yes if you've enjoyed the video make sure to give it a thumbs up and stay subscribed for plenty more videos to come oh\n"
