Greetings my beautiful lovelies! Hi, it's Emmy. Welcome back! Today, I am going to be starting a new series called: Weenies!
So, if you follow me on social media, at Allyou might have seen this post I did a while back -- and it was from Food Republic, I believe -- that listed 40 different styles of hot dogs and I saw it and said I need to try everyone of them because they sound so curious or interesting or bizarre.... So this is going to be the series where I make them and taste them.
So, for our first episode, I'll be making what they call the Korean Hot Dog. I had never seen this before, but apparently its been around for a little while. So basically its a corn dog or a hot dog that is covered with corn batter that's deep fried, but then it has an additional layer of crinkle cut french fries. Sounds amazing, right? So today I am going to attempt to make it and then give it a taste.
And this recipe is one that I adapted from Chef Steps. If you don't know them, I shall put their link down below. Alright, let's go ahead and get started! In a large mixing bowl, we are going to add three cups of all purpose flour. One... come on! Get in the scoop! Two... Three. 2/3 of a cup of sugar. Vwooop! 2 1/2 teaspoons of salt -- I'm using kosher here. Right, I forgot to get that out of my cupboard... Umm, where are you baking powder? I just used you for pancakes yesterday.
Three teaspoons of baking powder. 1/3 of a cup of cornmeal. Three eggs. 1 1/4 cup of whole milk. Then we are going to add that to our dry mix. That's pretty.... WHAT! I am going to add a splash of milk to that because that seems really stiff.
Now we are going to heat up our oil -- you can use vegetable oil, corn oil, canola oil, peanut oil... We're going to heat that to about 375 to 400 degrees. Okay, so while we're waiting for our oil to come to temperature, we are going to skewer our dogs. These are actually for candied apples, but I think they will be perfect for this application. You can also use Popsicle sticks or barbecue skewers if you like. So all we are going to do is take our hot dog and impale it. There we go, right down the middle. You just want to keep the hotdog nice and straight and make sure there is enough of a handle.
So for mine, I can go a little bit farther. Also, if you are going to serve these to little kids you might want to take the little tip off of it, so they don't, you know, poke themselves while they are eating their corndog. I grew up in California and as a kid my brother and I used to love going to Hot Dog on a Stick -- they had one in our local mall. Loved it! We would go and get a hot dog and a lemonade. It was the best!
So our oil is about up to temp -- we're looking at 375. It is important that our hot dogs are impeccably dry. So take a paper towel and make sure they're nicely patted dry. Otherwise, our batter will slip off. I've gone ahead and put some batter in a pint glass, so it's nice and tall and easy to dip.
And then, I've chopped up some crinkle-cut fries -- these are still frozen. I am going to go ahead and dip our dog.... into the batter. Give it a swirl; slowly pull it out; give it a little bit of a twist. NICE! Now we're going to take and roll it into our french fries. Actually, a lot of french fries sticks on this. Wow!
Pop that bad boy into our fryer... Alright, so all the hot dogs are cooked and now I just have to add my crinkle-cut fries. I'll just sprinkle them over top of each dog and then we can serve it up. And there you have it! The Korean Hot Dog is done! It looks amazing and I know that when I take a bite, it's going to be out of this world.
So good! That was exactly how I wanted to start off the Weenies series. Excellent! So let me know what recipe you'd like to see in the next Weenies episode. Let's keep it classy here. And yeah, hope you guys enjoyed that; I hope you guys learned something; share this video with your friends; follow me on social media; show this video a bit of love; and I shall see you in the next video! Toodaloo. Take care. Bye!
Nothing like an impaled dog!
