Decor Mistakes That will RUIN Your Home!

**Faux Greenery: A Decorating Trend that's Lost its Charm**

When it comes to decorating, trends come and go. While some may stick around for years to come, others are relegated to the dustbin of history. One such trend is faux greenery, particularly ivy and olive branches, which were once all the rage in the 90s. The problem with these decorative elements is that they can really make or break a room's aesthetic. If done correctly, they can add a touch of elegance and sophistication. However, if used incorrectly or overused, they can quickly become tacky and outdated.

For those who may still be clinging to this trend, it's worth considering why it's no longer in style. While ivy and olive branches were once seen as a sophisticated way to add some greenery to your space, they've since been replaced by more modern alternatives that offer the same benefits without the dated look. So, if you're looking to upgrade your home decor, it may be time to say goodbye to faux greenery.

**Decorating with Wine Bottles: A Style That's Been Downgraded**

Another trend that's no longer in vogue is decorating with wine bottles. While it was once seen as a chic way to add some visual interest to your space, this style has since been downgraded by many design experts. The problem with using wine bottles as decorative elements is that they can come across as too literal and tacky. Instead of adding a touch of elegance to your room, they may just detract from it.

If you're still using wine bottles as decorative elements in your home, it's worth considering why you chose them in the first place. If you genuinely love their design or functionality, then there's no reason to get rid of them. However, if you're looking to upgrade your space and want to create a more sophisticated look, it may be time to rethink your use of wine bottles.

**The Art of Pullbacks: A Trend That's Lost Its Charm**

Pullbacks on curtains are another decorating trend that's lost its charm. While they were once seen as a convenient way to add some visual interest to your windows, they've since been replaced by more modern alternatives that offer the same benefits without the dated look.

If you're still using pullbacks on your curtains, it's worth considering why you chose them in the first place. If you genuinely love their design or functionality, then there's no reason to get rid of them. However, if you're looking to upgrade your space and want to create a more sophisticated look, it may be time to rethink your use of pullbacks.

**Tips for Decorating on a Budget**

One of the best ways to decorate your home without breaking the bank is to shop smart. Instead of splurging on expensive art pieces or designer furniture, try shopping online or browsing thrift stores and flea markets for unique and affordable finds.

For example, I recently purchased some beautiful prints from Amazon that have completely transformed my living room. These prints are not only affordable but also offer a touch of elegance and sophistication that's hard to find in more expensive alternatives.

**The Importance of Editing**

Finally, the key to creating a beautiful and cohesive decorating scheme is editing. This means being ruthless when it comes to getting rid of items that no longer serve a purpose or make you feel good. If you're still using wine bottles as decorative elements in your home, for example, it may be time to rethink their place in your space.

By being willing to edit and purge your decor, you can create a space that truly reflects your personal style and aesthetic. Whether you're looking to upgrade your existing space or start from scratch, editing is an essential part of the decorating process.

**The Benefits of Original Artwork**

If you're looking for a way to add some personality to your space without breaking the bank, consider investing in original artwork. Not only can original pieces add a touch of elegance and sophistication to your room, but they also offer a unique and personalized touch that's hard to find in more generic decor.

I recently purchased an abstract piece from Amazon that has completely transformed my office. This piece is not only beautiful but also offers a touch of individuality that's perfect for a space where creativity and productivity are key.

**The Importance of Lighting**

Finally, lighting can make or break a room's ambiance. When it comes to decorating with faux greenery, lighting can be particularly important. By using the right light sources, you can create a warm and inviting glow that highlights your decorative elements and makes them truly shine.

For example, I recently installed some new table lamps in my living room that have completely transformed the space. These lamps not only add a touch of elegance but also provide plenty of light to highlight my faux greenery.

**Conclusion**

Decorating is all about having fun and expressing yourself through your space. While trends come and go, there are always ways to update your decor without breaking the bank or sacrificing style. By being willing to edit, shopping smart, and investing in original artwork, you can create a space that truly reflects your personal style and aesthetic.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enthis is a big mistake and it is literally one of the easiest fixes I see people doing this one all the time okay I'm gonna go here and I'm probably gonna make some people mad but he did that fair enough if you don't know you're supposed to be doing it then yeah you might be making this mistake and not even realizing it's something that you shouldn't be doing I'm trying to figure out why your space doesn't feel like what you're seeing in magazines or what you're seeing in the stores and you're trying to figure out what's not right here it may just be the well hello welcome to the house of Valentina I'm Valentina and I work as a designer in the Atlanta area and today I wanted to talk to you guys about some Decor mistakes that I see people making all the time that ruin a perfectly designed space they're simple little things that I see people doing all the time but they're really easy fixes so before we jump in make sure you hit subscribe give the video a thumbs up and let me know which of these you are guilty of and maybe if you have one that you see people doing add it to the list in the comments down below as well but without further Ado let's jump in cheers thank you okay so the first thing that people do all the time is that they hang their artwork too high or too low generally you want it to be at eye level of someone who is roughly about 5 10. for me I'm five foot one so we don't hang artwork in my house at my eye level at Midway at my eye level right we're gonna make sure that we hang it just a little bit higher and generally that will give you a much better feeling now hanging it too low is something that a lot of people do as well so if it's over the sofa for instance a lot of times people just hang it too close to the bottom of the sofa and really should fill out that space it's better almost to hang it too high honestly than to too low sometimes I'll see people hanging it underneath things and they're trying to squeeze in a piece of art just doesn't look that great the center point will be at your eye level you can always if you want to have more artwork and take the artwork all the way up to the ceiling RH does that all the time uh it's one of their little hacks that they use and they take the artwork really big and take it really high and sometimes they'll even take it really low but they always fill in the gaps they don't take it too low and leave the null empty or take it too high and leave the middle empty they're gonna make sure to really fill it out and so that's another thing that you can do as well but either way this is an easy fix you just grab the hammer and nails and recenter your artwork this is a big mistake and it is literally one of the easiest fixes you can ever make I think that having your cords showing is just it really just makes your room look immediately downgraded it really just is messy and it creates this it's just it's just not pretty it's a very of course aren't just ugly there's a lot of different things that you can use to hide your cords first of all you might want to just unplug them if they're plugged into a place that's just unattractive my husband does that all the time he's always wanting to like plug things in in the middle of the living room I'm like hey just plug that in somewhere else where it won't be the center point of the room or you could hide it behind a piece of furniture you could also hide it behind a basket or a planter with a tree in it all those are really good ways to hide your cords you can also get the little straps that they sell on Amazon that are nice little cord Keepers and really just kind of get everything closed so you don't have them kind of draped all over the floor and it makes it a little bit easier to crowd them behind something but either way have your cords hanging out just it's not attractive okay and it's a really easy fix I wanted to take just a moment and thank our video sponsor for today which is typology typology really helps me avoid one of the biggest Decor mistakes that I see people making all the time and that is having like really ugly everyday items that sit on the counter so I love to leave my typology out on the counter because it's gorgeous so not only is it beautiful but typology is a brand that a lot of people really don't know about so much in the U.S but it's really popular in France and there's a reason typology investigates the right actives for your skin and then formulates targeted products with only the essential ingredients everything's made in France and they comply with the strictest stringent European regulations for Cosmetics which already ban over 1300 products in opposition to the smaller ban list in the U.S I absolutely love their products I use them on a daily basis I have actually for quite a long time their micellar water is absolutely incredible I love it and and the packaging on this is gorgeous these products are incredible and the best part which is of course really important is that they actually really work on your skin the antioxidant Serum is made with ferulic acid the antioxidant face cream is made with carotenoids and organic lavender extracts the clay mask is made with yellow clay and turmeric and it feels so good on your skin it just it's hard to describe it just makes your skin feel so plump and it really just feels radiant and So Soft I've been using this twice a week and the other two every single day I'm a huge fan I absolutely love these products I know that you're going to as well if you click that link down in the show notes and spend 40 or more you're gonna get a free Radiance vitamin C toner I will leave all the details linked Down Below in the show notes for you thank you again to typology for being a video sponsor whoa I see people doing this one all the time and again it's so so easy of a fix people do this all the time so people do not steam out their curtains I can't even tell you I think I don't know maybe it's possible that the majority of the planet just literally hates to iron or steam things I think that's a huge proportion that is a huge portion of the population globally people hate steaming things out they hate ironing them every time I'm at my clients house and I pull out the iron there's like I'd rather do anything but iron I'm like really I don't get it what's the big deal you just iron I always turn on a movie or watch a YouTube video or turn on some music or I don't know just hang out with the kids or something it doesn't bother me it's a big deal if you hang your curtains and you don't steam or iron them out they're going to look really messy they're going to look like they just came out of the package which is not a good look and you spent money on them so why make them look cheap before you've really even gotten started it's a really easy fix if you hate ironing I I iron a lot because a lot of times it's just faster and easier and you can really get all the wrinkles out especially the first time around steaming the first time will take a little bit longer but if you really hate ironing my steamer I'll recommend my steamer because it is a piece of perfection it sits upright the water can't really spill out of it and it has a nice big Reservoir it's got the metal plate on it and I love it and it's really really useful for getting the job done really fast so you can also those with the metal plate on the steamer you can actually press that against the fabric and so you can steam out your curtains pretty fast I would also add on to this that not steaming out your pillows is another like no-go it really makes a big difference and I never do an install ever ever ever without taking the iron and the steamer with me because usually there's a couple of us and we're working on it because it really makes even my Amazon finds like the pillow and the curtains these are all Amazon finds but steaming them out or ironing them makes them look way more expensive and just more sophisticated oh this is a big one and it is an easy easy fix so a lot of you guys love the faux Greenery and so do I I love the real stuff but the faux Greenery is just sometimes it's more practical sometimes it's just what you need and what will happen a lot of times is that you'll get it in the box and people will literally just take it right out of the box and stick it in the vase and it looks terrible you can't do that when you buy from a store usually somebody else has taken it out of the box and fluffed it and so you're seeing it in its fluffed version but when you order from somewhere like Amazon for example uh a floral theirs came pretty fluffed actually they packaged theirs almost like a bouquet of flowers so it's a little bit different they're they're amazing I'm talking about these that are right here they literally come out of the box fluffed and even still though I'll still bend them and kind of mold them the way I want them to be but if you're buying off of Amazon they're gonna come mushed in a package and they're not gonna look good so what you need to do is you need to take them out of the package and give them a good fluff and a good just shaping of them and then that way they'll look way more realistic they'll look way fluffier and occasionally you may even have to pull out the steamer again if the leaves have gotten bent or like seriously creased they don't occur like that in nature so you need to take the steamer and steam the leaves out sometimes that way they really fluff up and everything looks really good and again it's just gonna look more expensive that way okay I'm gonna go here and I'm probably gonna make some people mad I know I am because I I read comments too okay and I see that people are like why do you have books and things on your coffee table and I'm like I thought everybody did that I did think it was weird I don't know because I don't know doesn't everyone put things on their coffee table I think that putting things that you love on your coffee table is really nice it's a really nice way of displaying things that you that you enjoy and things that you've collected things that you want to read a bouquet of flowers or something like that I like to be a little less functional when it comes to the coffee table I think it's a huge mistake to just literally use the coffee table as a as a remote rest or a foot rest I think that the coffee table is a huge opportunity to really dress up your room if you leave it completely empty your room is going to look a little bit soulless it's gonna look like it's missing something it's the center of the room and I think leaving it empty just kind of looks boring and a little bit underdone it's a fun opportunity to really express yourself whether you want to put a box I love to put a box on the table like a lot of times I do bone boxes I love those but I've got some Chagrin ones as well I bought a lot of that it doesn't have to be expensive a lot of those things I buy off of Amazon and you can have a little box or something to put the remote in a stack of books and a pretty bouquet of flowers there's still plenty of room for your feet laughs you can still put your feet up on the coffee table you can still set your coffee cup on the coffee table you can still enjoy the space but I do think the fact that it's in the center of the room if you leave it completely empty it's it's gonna look a little bit soulless oh I'm getting into it getting into it okay I think another huge mistake is to leave the mantle empty I know I know I went there some of you write in a lot and you're like I didn't know I was supposed to put stuff on The Mantel I'm like fair enough if you don't know you're supposed to be doing it then yeah you might be making this mistake and not even realizing it's something that you shouldn't be doing but I do think as you can see on my mantel you don't have to decorate it like crazy I used to put a lot more on it I like that look I I think the mantle is just it's really think about it this way you've got a whole wall sitting there and for someone like me I don't have bookshelves surrounding it and even if you do there's a mantle there and it's like a shelf in the middle of the room if it was on a bookshelf you'd probably put something on it but then when it's part of the mantle a lot of people just leave it empty but I think it looks really good to add things to The Mantel I think it just dresses it up just a little bit it it just gives it its moment it takes it that next level so simple candle holders maybe a couple books that can go on there sometimes you don't have a deep mantle so you can't put a lot on there but just some shallower books with a little sculptural piece on there will make a huge difference another big mistake that I think is one that I'm really passionate about is that I think you should paint your light switches or replace your light switches to match the wall in general in my bedroom I do have them contrasting but that's because the color that they're used the dark color is also used in the room and so it works it's a design feature but most of the time people either have really old light switches which actually can they really can be a hazard if they're really old even if they're if you're in a home that's from like the 90s if it's older you really need to replace them but we have found Even in our home that was built in the 90s a lot of the electrical was not in good shape and we've been going through the house and realizing we should have done this sooner it's not just vanity it's safety to switch out your your outlets and your light switches I think when you're doing that having them match the wall color is generally what I'm going to do I think that whether you want to dress them up and buy fancy stuff like the Buster and punch that I do buy or you just want to do something pretty simple I think the Kaza if you have light or White Walls that looks really good you don't have to have an exact match if you've got white light switches but if you've got a dark wall and a white light switch it just doesn't look good I think that you can get gorgeous blooms like what I have here this kind of faux Greenery is very different from a lot of the ivy that we all used especially in like the 80s and 90s like that ivy I if it oh I hope it doesn't ever come back I'm gonna oppose it if it does okay I really think that the ivy just really looks cheap it just looks a little bit cheesy and it looks really messy so instead of going with Ivy I would invest some money into some faux trees at the moment this is a real tree behind me but I'll share with you down in the description box I'll share with you the the faux trees that I recommend to my clients and I have in my home and also the faux Greenery because this really does make a big difference and it's a different thing than all the ivy while we're talking about the 90s and some of the decorating things that we did back in those days that are really just not in style and a lot of people are still doing it is decorating with all of olive olive oil and vinegar bottles just just something that we back then that really really just downgrades your home a lot of us were putting them on the tops of our cabinets in the kitchen I mean I get a bit nostalgic I'm like oh those were really good days we had a lot of fun and we had a lot of different types and they'd have grapes painted on them and other things and we're not talking about like pretty bottles that you would buy maybe a Crate and Barrel that would be Olive and olive oil and vinegar that would sit out on your counter we're talking about decorating with them and adding grapes I did all of those things okay we thought we were so cool uh putting grapes and Ivy and olive oil and vinegar up on top of the cabinets this was like a major look and I think that it's I think it's a mistake nowadays I think it just take it down I mean if it's still up there from the 90s it probably doesn't taste good so you probably safe to go ahead and get rid of it I don't I don't display art with wine bottles on it or a whiny the art I think that that art is just a little too literal I think that that style just I mean watercolors um just in general that style really downgrades wherever you're gonna put it so if you've already got it and you love it uh I my husband if he was here he'd tell you you know ship it off I I'm not like that if it's something that you really enjoy I wouldn't say to get rid of it but if you're trying to upgrade your home trying to figure out why your space doesn't feel like what you're seeing in magazines or what you're seeing in the stores and you're trying to figure out what's not right here it may just be the wine art whiny styled a little dated feeling and instead you can replace it I just bought some really pretty prints off of Amazon actually you can buy some really pretty sketches I found some florals and some trees and they have all kinds of artwork that you can buy you can also buy like the one you can see back here is an abstract I bought it off of Amazon there's a lot of different kinds of art that you can buy on Amazon if you're looking to do something budget friendly and then of course if you want to spend more money you could always go somewhere like first dibs or cherish even Pottery Barn has some Originals I think West down too they have some Originals now so you can get some great art but generally speaking I would just avoid using whiny art grapes ID just yeah Let It Go finally I kind of feel bad about saying this one because I know some people really like to decorate with these I personally get the point of the little pullbacks on the curtains I just think that they just they just don't look that great I I think that a panel just going straight down just looks more Chic more sophisticated I just think that the pullbacks they come a lot of times still in curtains generally speaking they don't come with the curtains anymore it's a little bit dated to use the pullbacks if you like the pullbacks just use them it's not the end of the world this is not you know this isn't this isn't a life crisis here okay this is just decorating we're having fun uh but I think that generally those do look really dated it's just not something that curtains are really even sold with anymore most designers don't use them when they go to put curtains into a home I just think generally to just skip the tie backs and just push your curtains open and if you want to have all the light coming in or just close them when you're ready to close them for the day but generally I just avoid all the pullbacks oh you guys can let me know in the comments if you're just like yes or No Love by pullbacks let me know but there you go that is my list of items of things I think are really really easy Decor fixes that it will transform your spaces uh yeah hit subscribe give the video a thumbs up and let me know down in the comments which of these you're guilty of and which maybe there's something you think should have been them a good fluff and a good just shaping of them and then that way they'll look way more realistic they'll look way fluffier and occasionally you may even have to pull out the steamer again if the leaves have gotten bent or like seriously creased they don't occur like that in nature so you need to take the steamer and steam the leaves out sometimes that way they really fluff up and everything looks really good and again it's just gonna look more expensive that way okay I'm gonna go here and I'm probably gonna make some people mad I know I am because I I read comments too okay and I see plenty of room for your feet laughs you can still put your feet up on the coffee table you can still set your coffee cup on the coffee table you can still enjoy the space but I do think the fact that it's in the center of the room if you leave it completely empty it's it's gonna look a little bit soulless oh I'm getting into it getting into it okay I think another huge mistake is to leave the mantle empty I know I know I went there some of you write in a lot and you're like I didn't know I was supposed to put stuff on The Mantel I'm like fair enough if you don't know you're supposed to be doing it then yeah you might be making this mistake and not even realizing it's something that you shouldn't be doing but I do think as you can see on my mantel you don't have to decorate it like crazy I used to put a lot more on it I like that look I I think the mantle is just it's really think about it this way you've got a whole wall sitting there and for someone like me I don't have bookshelves surrounding it and even if you do there's a mantle there and it's like a shelf in the middle of the room if it was on a bookshelf you'd probably put something on it but then when it's part of the mantle a lot of people just leave it empty but I think it looks really good to add things to The Mantel I think it just dresses it up just a little bit it it just gives it its moment it takes it that next level so simple candle holders maybe a couple books that can go on there sometimes you don't have a deep mantle so you can't put a lot on there but just some shallower books with a little sculptural piece on there will make a huge difference another big mistake that I think is one that I'm really passionate about is that I think you should paint your light switches or replace your light switches to match the wall in general in my bedroom I do have them contrasting but that's because the color that they're used the dark color is also used in the room and so it works it's a design feature but most of the time people either have really old light switches which actually can they really can be a hazard if they're really old even if they're if you're in a home that's from like the 90s if it's older you really need to replace them but we have found Even in our home that was built in the 90s a lot of the electrical was not in good shape and we've been going through the house and realizing we should have done this sooner it's not just vanity it's safety to switch out your your outlets and your light switches I think when you're doing that having them match the wall color is generally what I'm going to do I think that whether you want to dress them up and buy fancy stuff like the Buster and punch that I do buy or you just want to do something pretty simple I think the Kaza if you have light or White Walls that looks really good you don't have to have an exact match if you've got white light switches but if you've got a dark wall and a white light switch it just doesn't look good I think that you can get gorgeous blooms like what I have here this kind of faux Greenery is very different from a lot of the ivy that we all used especially in like the 80s and 90s like that ivy I if it oh I hope it doesn't ever come back I'm gonna oppose it if it does okay I really think that the ivy just really looks cheap it just looks a little bit cheesy and it looks really messy so instead of going with Ivy I would invest some money into some faux trees at the moment this is a real tree behind me but I'll share with you down in the description box I'll share with you the the faux trees that I recommend to my clients and I have in my home and also the faux Greenery because this really does make a big difference and it's a different thing than all the ivy while we're talking about the 90s and some of the decorating things that we did back in those days that are really just not in style and a lot of people are still doing it is decorating with all of olive olive oil and vinegar bottles just just something that we back then that really really just downgrades your home a lot of us were putting them on the tops of our cabinets in the kitchen I mean I get a bit nostalgic I'm like oh those were really good days we had a lot of fun and we had a lot of different types and they'd have grapes painted on them and other things and we're not talking about like pretty bottles that you would buy maybe a Crate and Barrel that would be Olive and olive oil and vinegar that would sit out on your counter we're talking about decorating with them and adding grapes I did all of those things okay we thought we were so cool uh putting grapes and Ivy and olive oil and vinegar up on top of the cabinets this was like a major look and I think that it's I think it's a mistake nowadays I think it just take it down I mean if it's still up there from the 90s it probably doesn't taste good so you probably safe to go ahead and get rid of it I don't I don't display art with wine bottles on it or a whiny the art I think that that art is just a little too literal I think that that style just I mean watercolors um just in general that style really downgrades wherever you're gonna put it so if you've already got it and you love it uh I my husband if he was here he'd tell you you know ship it off I I'm not like that if it's something that you really enjoy I wouldn't say to get rid of it but if you're trying to upgrade your home trying to figure out why your space doesn't feel like what you're seeing in magazines or what you're seeing in the stores and you're trying to figure out what's not right here it may just be the wine art whiny styled a little dated feeling and instead you can replace it I just bought some really pretty prints off of Amazon actually you can buy some really pretty sketches I found some florals and some trees and they have all kinds of artwork that you can buy you can also buy like the one you can see back here is an abstract I bought it off of Amazon there's a lot of different kinds of art that you can buy on Amazon if you're looking to do something budget friendly and then of course if you want to spend more money you could always go somewhere like first dibs or cherish even Pottery Barn has some Originals I think West down too they have some Originals now so you can get some great art but generally speaking I would just avoid using whiny art grapes ID just yeah Let It Go finally I kind of feel bad about saying this one because I know some people really like to decorate with these I personally get the point of the little pullbacks on the curtains I just think that they just they just don't look that great I I think that a panel just going straight down just looks more Chic more sophisticated I just think that the pullbacks they come a lot of times still in curtains generally speaking they don't come with the curtains anymore it's a little bit dated to use the pullbacks if you like the pullbacks just use them it's not the end of the world this is not you know this isn't this isn't a life crisis here okay this is just decorating we're having fun uh but I think that generally those do look really dated it's just not something that curtains are really even sold with anymore most designers don't use them when they go to put curtains into a home I just think generally to just skip the tie backs and just push your curtains open and if you want to have all the light coming in or just close them when you're ready to close them for the day but generally I just avoid all the pullbacks oh you guys
