**Alternate Historical Fiction**
I'm definitely going to have done it by the time you guys see this video and I hope that I like it - I am liking it so far, but this is an alternate historical fiction where there's this motorcycle race. So, Germany won World War II, and now there's just obviously the world isn't that great. Because the Nazis won the war, there is this motorcycle race that these people get to go on for honor and all that. At the end, they get to meet Hitler, and our main character is a skin shifter who shifts into one of the previous winners because she wants to get close. She's part of the resistance, and she wants to get close to Hitler to kill him. So, definitely very high stakes, intense situation. It sounds very weird, but honestly, just give it a chance - like I wasn't really sure about it, but oh, it was very good. Definitely a gritty and difficult kind of space to be in, but super interesting to read.
**Twisted Secrets**
Next is "All Your Twisted Secrets" by A. D. Robin. This is kind of like "One of Us is Lying", it's like a fun sort of thing - I mean, obviously they're not completely fun, but just a little bit lighthearted. Like I hesitate to say light-hearted, but I just get the same feeling from this one as I do with "One of Us is Lying". A big part of that is it's a group of characters who are stuck in a small space at the same time, and there's like a threat of death - so in this story, we have all these different characters who are trapped in a room, and they have to choose one of them to die. Or, there's a bomb that will go off and kill them all. Definitely very interesting and not the best situation to be in. I was kind of expecting it to be more in the moment, but a lot of it is flashbacks to how they got there, and things that happened before.
**Neverworld Wake**
Next up is "Neverworld Wake" by Marisha Pessl. I don't have a lot to say about this book because like, there's a lot that happens - so much that happens, like time pauses, and it's just, it's a twisted web. It definitely will twist your mind, and you'll be like, "What's happening? What's up? What's down?" Like, I don't know anything anymore. That's kind of the experience that you're looking for when you want to get spooky vibes.
**Graphic Novels**
Now, I have a couple of graphic novels that I wanted to recommend. First is "Pumpkin Heads" by Rainbow Rowell and Faith Erin Hicks. This is definitely the quintessential fall book - it's the other book that I read on that day of fall reading video that I did last year, and I would not read it again well, I might read it again this fall but it's not one like it's set in a pumpkin patch, and it's a sweet cute romance. In this pumpkin patch, there's not much else going on - just a cute romance. But the art is beautiful, and it definitely if you're looking for something quick and just to get you into the pumpkiny, pumpkin spice latte fall mood, then definitely try it out.
Last but not least, I have "Moon Cakes" which I read recently. And I wish that I had waited until fall to read it, but I'm still glad that I did read it. So, this was a really fun witchy story - and it is set in like there's this bookstore, and the main character helps her grandmother with these spell books that they're selling, stuff, and she ends up meeting with one of her old childhood friends that she has had a crush on for a very long time. The two of them start up an adorable little witchy romance, and it's just a lot of fun. It also has trans rep which is awesome.
**Fall Reading Recommendations**
I might do the other video as like a rainy day reads video - I don't really know, I just yeah so, I hope you guys enjoyed, I hope it was actually helpful, and you're not just like, "I don't know what just happened" because I feel like I don't know what just happened but yeah, I hope that you got some good recommendations. Please let me know what you are planning on reading this fall because I would love to know or if you're not really a mood reader and just read whatever - like I definitely am a mood reader so whatever the season is, I kind of like to read surrounding that but I do also just read whatever. But yeah, I don't know what I just said so thank you for watching today's video, and I will see you in the next one bye.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: eneveryone it's haley and today i'm going to be talking about book recommendations for fall or autumn so i put on a sweater for today's video because we are about at fall i can't remember if i timed this video to come out like close to when fall starts or after fall starts but either way i feel like fall kind of starts in september because it's such a short season and there's so many fun breeds to pack in there that fit with the seasonal mood that i feel like i need to start early because before you know it it's november and it just feels like it's winter and christmas so today i have some books to recommend that i haven't talked about in a fall recommendations video before i have done a few of these in the past so i'll link them down below i'm kind of like with recommendations videos like this i'm not sure if i should repeat books from previous videos because it's been a long time since i've recommended them or do an entirely new fresh list let me know what your is if you don't mind me repeating because then i might do kind of like a fall recommendations part two but without further ado let's just get into this for fall i like reading mysteries and thrillers but i'm also a chicken so the thrillers that i read are really not that thrilling but probably i mean by other people's standards for me though they are and i also like to read some historical fiction now really there's just a vibe to fall books that i feel like these fit you know the books that you can curl up in a chair like this next to a window it's raining i'll set the scene for you and you have like a cup of hot chocolate or coffee and it's steaming and you have a blanket and you have a dog maybe and or a cat either way you just have a companion and you're sitting there with a book that vibe so the first book that i have to talk about is one that you guys were telling me to read for a very long time and it took me a very long time to get to it because i mean i tried a couple of times and it never happened and i'm not talking about carry on by rainbow rowell because similar situation but i'm talking about truly devious by maureen johnson i don't know what it was but this book took me a hell of a long time to get into and i am glad that i did get into it and gave it a chance and saw it through i tried the audiobook that didn't work for me i tried physically reading it and i think it just wasn't the right time but when it finally was the right time it just worked it clicked and i super enjoyed this this is a murder mystery set in a secluded school in the mountain side of vermont it's a really weird school like the builder of it he wanted it built so then he wouldn't even know all the secret passages and everything and only select students get to go who have specialties and the main character her specialty is she is really into serial killers and true crime and very interested in that and she comes to the school hoping to solve an age-old murder mystery so years and years ago when the school opened the owner of the school's daughter was murdered and no one knows what happened and this is told alternating between then which is the 1800s or something like that but basically historical fiction portions and now when we have our main character going to this school and trying to figure things out and some weird things start happening so definitely the spooky vibes in this one i personally prefer the historical parts of this story but i did also like the modern day parts and i feel like it was very setting driven that setting just flew off the page and really brought me into the story and i just became very engrossed with it and i haven't continued with the series yet i don't even actually own the other books yet but i definitely will probably like i wasn't sure before but i think i will probably pick up the other one soon next is the dark descent of elizabeth frankenstein by kirsten white i have read this for a 24-hour halloween readathon that i did by the way once again i'm gonna mention i don't like halloween so that's why not all of these books are very spooky but i do appreciate a vibe if that makes sense but i read this for one of my 24 hour halloween readathons i like doing that i like like kind of the festive side of halloween it's really i just don't like the scary stuff or the gore or anything i don't know i don't really like how everything's gross it's just it's really not my favorite like i don't even really like trick-or-treating but this book kind of took me by surprise and i don't know if it's because i read it so quickly or because i wasn't sure what to expect from it but it is a frankenstein retelling and in it we follow elizabeth who she is brought to the home of victor frankenstein she is escaping from a former abuser and he offers to take her under his wing and obviously i mean we know like if you know frankenstein at all you know that that's gonna be an interesting situation and it definitely was i read this close to when i read original frankenstein which i really enjoyed so i think that may have also contributed to my enjoyment of it but i really enjoyed it and also you should read frankenstein because that's really good next is undead girl gang by lily anderson this is just like a fun kind of mix of some sorcery some zombies and some high school drama it was very unexpected i didn't really know what to anticipate going into it i think i don't even think i pre-ordered this or bought it myself i think it was actually sent to me by the publisher and i was thinking about unhauling it but i was like no i'll give it a chance like i'll try it's around halloween it seems like a good read and i'm glad that i did give it a chance though because it was super fun but also just i don't know it was an experience i just appreciated the mix of zombies and that paranormal stuff with like all the drama that was happening and it was some unlikely pairings and just i feel like this would make a really good netflix movie slash tv show i can definitely see it being adapted the next two books are actually kind of similar in that way and i feel like they definitely are one like if you liked one you will probably like the two others now these next two i read way too close together because i keep on getting them mixed up all the time even before they came out i was getting them mixed up and then since i read them so close together when they did come out i just keep like they just get very melded in my head also they're both purple but i will start with these witches don't burn by isabelle sterling so this is a queer witch story which what more could you really want it's set in salem massachusetts and there are elemental witches but there's this blood witch that has come to town and she's performing dark magic and the coven has to try and figure out what's happening and figure out who this blood which is that is terrorizing them so we have some complications here because as you can see we have the teen witch and then the hot x who is also in her coven and then her best friend and then there's also the new girl so there's this new crush that she has that obviously doesn't know that she's a witch and that just complicates things so we have some relationship drama in here as well but also some fun witchcraft and it is a female female romance as well and it is super sweet and that book i particularly keep on getting mixed up with the babysitter's coven by kate williams i read these like i don't think it was back to back but it was very close together and for some reason they're just like both witch stories and they both just mesh together in my mind they came out around the same time too so like i don't know why i struggle with that so much but this is a mix of babysitters and witchcraft so the babysitter's club sort of thing is created to protect the coven so very interesting combination and the babysitting aspect like it's just kind of a dark sort of babysitters club i read those books when i was a kid i mean i didn't read a lot as a kid but i did read some of them and this is just kind of that with like the fun that comes along with it but also witchcraft you know what the other reason i keep on getting these mixed up is because it's like high school whatever witches but then there's also a new girl that comes and that's why because there's another new girl so very confusing next is actually a recent read for me and that is summer of salt by katrina leno so you may be thinking summer of salt why in fall i feel like this is a good late fall or not late fall late summer early fall of read because it is set on an island but the island is pretty gloomy so it definitely has those fall vibes to it while also having kind of summer vibes because it is set on an island but it's a magical story where there's witchcraft and everyone knows it but no one really talks about it so the magic has been passed down through the female generations of the main character's family and they are sisters and the one sister they are twins actually and the one twin was born with her power so she was born being able to levitate but the other twin our main character she was born without anything and now it's approaching her 18th birthday and at their 18th birthday if they haven't had a power then they're not gonna have any so there's this whole mystery whole anxiety surrounding that this also has a female female relationship in it as well the island's like a very interesting setting it's definitely another setting driven story which i feel like i generally like for around fall but the island is very popular because there's this bird that the girls are apparently related to who keeps on coming year after year after year after year and brings a bunch of bird watchers and that is how the island survives but this summer is a little bit different so i feel like this is just kind of a good mix of a summer fall read but also just a read with a lot of vibes overall speaking of a read that has a lot of vibes i feel like i couldn't go through this recommendations video without talking about spell book of the lost and found by moira fowley doyle this is definitely a story that thrives on the atmosphere it's super atmospheric so it's set on an irish or in an old irish town and it's quite similar to summer of salt in the fact that they both are using the atmosphere and kind of have a magical element that is also being used to talk about a greater sort of i can't think of the word right now but to talk about something very impactful so both of these books do have trigger warnings so definitely be wary of that but spellbook of the lost and found they there's a lot of characters in it and there's a spell book and like things have started going missing so they start performing these spells to try and bring things back but it's not really working so it's just this whole thing now i listened to this audiobook i did a whole day of fall reading video last year and i listened to this then so i'll link that down below for you guys but it was a lot of fun and kind of the perfect read for that fall day next is wolf by wolf by ryan graudin this is the only like strictly historical fiction book on this list because i feel like most historical fiction i like for winter more so but this one has kind of a mysterious aspect to it but not even really mysterious it's just a very intense so for that reason i feel like it is good for around this time of year i can't really explain why like honestly obviously i can't because i keep on trying to describe the vibes and it just doesn't make sense but i really loved this book when i read it i'm actually currently reading the sequel so i will definitely be done it by the time you guys see this video and i hope that i like it i am liking it so far but this is an alternate historical fiction where there's this motorcycle race so germany beautiful and it definitely if you're looking for something quick and just to get you into the pumpkiny pumpkin spice latte fall mood then definitely try it out and last is moon cakes which i read recently and i wish that i had waited until fall to read it but i'm still glad that i did read it so this was a really fun witchy story and it is set in like there's this bookstore and the main character helps her grandmothers with these spell books that they're selling and stuff and she ends up meeting with one of her old childhood friends that she has had a crush on for a very long time and the two of them start up an adorable little witchy romance and it's just a lot of fun and it also has trans rep which is awesome so those are all of my books that i would recommend for you to read this fall i might do the other video as like a rainy day reads video i don't really know i just yeah so i hope you guys enjoyed i hope it was actually helpful and you're not just like i don't know what just happened because i feel like i don't know what just happened but yeah i hope that you got some good recommendations please let me know what you are planning on reading this fall because i would love to know or if you're not really a mood reader and just read whatever like i definitely am a mood reader so whatever the season is i kind of like to read surrounding that but i do also just read whatever but yeah i don't know what i just said so thank you for watching today's video and i will see you in the next one bye you\n"
