The Art of Small-Sided Games: A Tactical Analysis
If there's one player left on a team, you could look to do is if there's what maybe one player left on a team you could maybe do that you can dribble and finish. On the other hand, if it's a 1v1 scenario, look to use the players on the outside that's what they're there for. Each team's gonna have two goals, so the reds are gonna score in these two goals, blue's gonna score in these two goals. So once a team scores in one goal, they get then going to attack the other goal unless they lose the ball.
So if they lose possession, okay, the next time they win it, they can score in either goal. Let's say we play into the blues here, okay, they get close down, played into the reds there again he looks like he closed down, guess played in this player scores as soon as they score, he's out to play and then the coach will play the next ball in. Okay, so the blues are then looking to attack this goal can get played in again the opener now gets played into this player slid into space band goal okay this player can move out into here, then the coach will play into one of the blues again and then look to attack the other side.
Okay let's now say that the reds win the ball back as soon as the reds win it back, okay they look to score in either goal. Get it here there's a goal play moves to the outside so we're getting more space for players and then we get more overloads as well so they can get played into the reds again. Okay they're looking to attack that other side now, so we're looking for quick incisive passes okay and movement and also that ability to drive with the ball.
Get set into a player look to score so you can have multiple players on the lines as well so now we're down to four before reds are looking to attack that other side again. Okay or gets played in maneuver it quickly could be that that option is not on, it's getting blocked so kind of be patient okay kind of look to use that outside player to get bounced in and then there's a goal we get another player moving on the outside. Okay so it's focusing on that communication as well like decision making improvisation and creativity.
And we just keep going and going until one team has got all the players out. Let's say the reds get it okay, they look to maneuver it to this side blues with it back gets played in play shoots scores there we go there's another player in there now we're down to 3v3 okay. And then again blues lots of move the ball got players on the outside could get bounced in bounce back score again.
Okay so tonight it's dead quick all the time, so the players got to constantly focus but now what you see is that the blues got two players left okay got four players on the outside but inside at the of the middle there's a transition pediatric the player could receive the ball. Okay could have played into his mate and when it gets played into here okay he can get into set up by the reds they play in score back to 2v2 again okay.
So we just keep going and going okay we've got the last two in here so again the reds are trying to score in here now, so it's that reaction for the players. It's like no as soon as they've lost the ball or a goal has gone in okay where am i defending okay who where's the ball coming from okay where where's the opposition's going so it's staying switched on at all times i have a positive reaction being proactive and not reactive to situations.
So let's say we have two reds on this line now they've got one player left okay, the ball can get played in okay they've got to look to maneuver with players on the outside to receive it first time to lock to score and then what you can do is it can be whichever team wins gets the points okay and then you look to go again reset the player's door come back into the middle so it's that when that attacking okay, the themes are okay attack at speed okay lost communication lots of movements okay decision making okay and then women in that area where we can score being decisive.
And then it reactions go and score the other side. We're looking to penetrate and punish the opposition when we're defending or capable to contain okay look to protect the goal and then also on transition we're capable of that light switch mentality to then go okay, we're going to stop the opposition scoring can we look to win it back when we do win it back can we play out of pressure and then look to score. We will now move into our final animation before concluding this week's session.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enwelcome to session sunday hi guys it's jack edwards and in today's video we're going to be taking a look at attacking and transition but before we get into this week's video make sure to leave us a like and subscribe and if you missed last week's video click on the link above okay so moving into the first part of this week's session we're going to be looking at a 1v1 drill so focusing on trying to attack the goal but also our recovery runs to try and defend as well but before we get into it let's have a look how many players we've got this week and the equipment that we'll be using so in terms of players for this week we're gonna be we're gonna be working with 12 players all out for your players but if you have goalkeepers that's fine you can just add them in so we're having the goals with no goalkeepers so smaller side of goals you can add in goalkeepers instead okay and in terms of having more or less players that's fine as well just a adapter to having how many plays you've got and look to split your group into two so how this jail is going to set up in terms of equipment we're going to use some balls bibs and cones okay and then if you don't have small side of goals you can look to use poles instead to obviously mark out a goal area in terms of the setup for this part of the session okay so the middle area here where we're going to have a gate the gate is just going to be above the gates are going to be five yards okay and what we'll do depending on what your age group that you're working with okay you're then going to look to have a total amount of yardage here so the minimum you kind of want to do is 30 yards just so there's a little bit of space for the players to maneuver in okay so what you'll look to do is is have five yards in the middle and then so that'll just meet in the middle of there so let's say you're doing 30 yards you'll look to put that 50 so you'll have your 15 yards there and then just a couple of yards either side for your gate in there in terms of the width you might want to have 10 yards either side of the goal as well and then in terms of the cones here so we're going to be starting here so if you had your let's say you're 10 yards either side where the gates will start here okay and then you'll have five yards for each cone in here as well so it's a quite quick movement so it's just a 10 and a sprint so the players who aren't working will stay behind here the players who are moving okay they're going to sprint around the cone here or the pole sprint back through and through the gate as they come through the gate the coach will then play the ball in okay if you have two coaches as well or different or a set amount of coaches okay you could locate them around okay so as the player comes through okay the coach who's going to play the bauble shout so the coaches will might know themselves who's going to play beforehand they could just be a hand signal okay so then the player's going to react to it so one team's going to be finishing in one goal once he's going to be finished in the other goal so let's say the reds come through first and they're shooting in this goal the coach instead of playing it towards here will have to play it right in front of them so then the blue player is going to look to recover and stop them getting the router goal what you're trying to use is a smaller side goal so kind of a father side goal okay you can even make small gates as well for the player to try and get past and score you could even create an end zone instead so instead of it being a goal to score in the players got to dribble past the same line to score which gives the the defenders a chance to get back in to try and win it back and then they can go and attack their goal so it can be that the play is live until the ball goes out or there's a goal or it can be a set amount of time it could be after 20 20 seconds 30 seconds if the play looks like it's dead okay you can see the players okay 10 seconds remaining and then after that if no one scored the next players can go so then as soon as the players have gone they go to the back of their queue next player will move up okay players just keep moving up so they're getting a little bit of rest in between as well again you could always set up two different areas if you wanted to as well but we'll start with one of the coaches again and then again we're going around come up through whoever gets through face with the blues is time they don't look to attack there one rule that you could say is that it can't be a facetime finish so that gives the chance for the other players to get back in they have to take a touch phase to attack so what we're focusing on is being confidence driving into space okay that decision making to go okay as soon as i got the ball looking to attack that goal so attack the center of the pitch okay been having that confidence to drive with the ball as well at the time and eating to get on the ball and then those recovery runs as well to try and win the ball to transition on transition can we look to be strong and brave okay to look to win the ball back or to prevent the opposition scoring and the player does win it back go and attack that goal quickly so we're looking to attack that center of the pitch we want to move into our first animation before moving on to part two of this week's session now moving into part two of this week's session we're now focusing on 2v1 and 3v2 scenarios so we're going to be splitting our group into two groups of six again if you do have goalkeepers that's fine again you can just add them in it's where the goals are in terms of the setup for this part of the session okay you're going to be looking to go in between either 30 and 40 yards of depth okay again you can increase that depending on the age group and number that you got we don't want to make it too big okay because we want them to be quick fight attacks and when one team loses possession and the other team's trying to attack the other side we don't want it to be too far from goal so you can start off small with 30 yards and then if you feel like you want to increase it to 40 that's fine so we're going to start off with 30 so 15 yards either side so we've got the halfway point as the team has to cross the halfway line to score but if you had goalkeepers you might not want that instead okay because what we're trying to do is just make sure that they're attacking in that final third not just getting the ball and looking to clip over a defender's head into a small sided goal looking to go and attack them to create the openings to score so how it's going to be one team is going to be working as the 2v1 side okay to start with and then one team is going to be working as the 3v2 side and then after a certain amount of time okay you can just swap them over as well in terms of the width again you don't want to be it don't want it to be too wide again so you can look to go again between 20 and 30 yards 30 yards and again if you don't see how it goes you don't want to be too big again it depends on what age group that you're working with and 20 yards could be also a little bit too tight so you could look to go in the middle and go and do 25 but again you've got three to work with that's the kind of the range that you want to be going for so that the space for the players to move and the area is not too big so they've got to be more creative as well so we're gonna have the reds as the team in the 2v1 and the blues with the team where they'll go through ev2 so it's constant attack so we're attacking and then transitioning so it's that light switch mentality to go from straight from attack to try and defend some defense to attack okay so we're focusing on our support runs in here improvisation and creativity on the ball confidence on the ball and our decision making and then our speed the play and also our reactions and to a loss of possession and also gain on the ball so the coach will play in to one of the two reds here they're gonna look to attack as a two one of the blues will come in to defend okay so for this played obviously they're going to try and contain and try and stop them scoring okay but if the reds drive into space okay i might get a player coming around on the outside this play might take it 1v1 and then it could get slid in and then for a goal as soon as that goal has gone in or as soon as the ball has gone out anyway let's see the blue wins it back across the other end and scores that's fine coach will play the next ball in okay two one of the two blues waiting and then they will go in three v two straight away so again we're looking for those support runs we get players y get players moving in behind and so what we're doing trying to do is make it more difficult for those defenders and to try and obviously to try and contain the attackers by spreading the pitch out okay providing options on the ball so we can get runners going in behind okay to slide in and then look to score as soon as that ball is finished that second ball we're then looking for our next set of players okay to get up in there so the next set of reds are coming up to here okay the blues are there as well so then it'll start again with the reds 2v1 going into space okay one of the blues coming up to defend again it could be quite simple gotta play moving on the outside as the player was playing there could be a little drop of the shoulder band take it in there so being confident and scoring again then we will get the next ball in blue's coming in again to go 3v2 get a runner in behind could get played into the players chasing after the ball and get ourselves in there to score so again it's still support runs for the player in possession not all just won the but when the ball's in here just running just running both straight and behind can we get look to get players cutting across the defenders making it difficult for them maybe starting wide and going on the shoulder cutting into cutting into inside the defense when the ball gets played they're creating space for another player's movement and then they can carry it on to create that space for a player to receive it so it's trying to tell the players don't just run in straight lines all the time okay look to bend your movements okay but also be patient as well can you get little bits of communication and hand signals as well to where you want the ball and then ever let's say an opposition team does win the ball box so they've defended well they've prevented the options ball gets played through and then you can look to pinch the ball into 1v1 scenario can he look to score quickly so that's transition that light switch mentality to go from defense to attack okay to think okay can we look to score coming to play out of pressure so it could be here playing into a goal to play forward again if you do have goalkeepers you can just look to add them in okay and it becomes even more realistic to be in a more of an attacking scenario and you can use bigger goals as well we want to move into our next animation before moving on to the final part of this week's session okay now moving into the final part of this week's session when i'm moving more into a small side of game-based scenario which is again going to be focusing on attacking and those transitions as well so in terms of the setup for this part of the session okay you're going to go with 20 yards of depth and width okay each side and you're going to force more side goals in the corners now if you don't have small side of goals again you can just look to use the poles in terms of if you had goalkeepers okay instead of having small sided goals you could just look to have a two goal two goalkeepers in okay and the teams just looked to swap scoring each goal as soon as they win the ball and as soon as they've scored so the aim for the game is for the first team to get all of their players out okay win so every player to score so when a player does score they then just move to the outside and basically just become a float to basically fit it for their team and extra players are passed to but they just can't score so with it being small-sided goals you're going to look to bring in a first-time finish um and what you could look to do is if there's what maybe one player left on a team you could maybe do that you can dribble and finish or if it's a 1v1 scenario look to use the players on the outside that's what they're there for so each team's gonna have two goals so the reds are gonna score in these two goals blue's gonna score in these two goals so once a team scores in one goal they get then going to attack the other goal unless they lose the ball so if they lose possession okay the next time they win it they can score in either goal so let's say we play into the blues here okay they get close down played into the reds there again he looks like he closed down guess played in this player scores as soon as they score he's out to play and then the coach will play the next ball in okay so the blues are then looking to attack this goal can get played in again the opener now gets played into this player slid into space band goal okay this player can move out into here then the coach will play into one of the blues again and then look to attack the other side okay let's now say that the reds win the ball back as soon as the reds win it back okay they look to score in either goal get it here there's a goal play moves to the outside so we're getting more space for players and then we get more overloads as well so they can get played into the reds again okay they're looking to attack that other side now so we're looking for quick incisive passes okay and movement and also that ability to drive with the ball get set into a player look to score so you can have multiple players on the lines as well so now we're down to four before reds are looking to attack that other side again okay or gets played in maneuver it quickly could be that that option is not on it's getting blocked so kind of be patient okay kind of look to use that outside player to get bounced in and then there's a goal we get another player moving on the outside okay so it's focusing on that communication as
