Huawei Mate 20 X - Hands On Review

The Huawei Mate 20X: A Giant of a Smartphone?

You didn't think anyone wanted to make enormous phones which screamed bigger than six or six and a half inches anymore, did you? Well, you were completely wrong because this is the Huawei Mate 20X and it's enormous. This phone boasts a 7.2 inch screen that's right, bigger than some tablets. Let's take a look around the front of this massive device.

As I hold the phone in my hand, I can see how much I'm struggling to keep it steady, just to hold this enormous device. The bezels on this phone are incredibly thin, which allows them to stretch the screen out to 7.2 inches while still making it a manageable device. You have to think about what you're holding, though - an old 7-inch tablet from one of the original Nexus tablets would have been impossible to manage with just one hand. This is the amazing ability of Huawei's designers to minimize bezels and make that much longer aspect ratio.

The button bezel along this screen is quite noticeable, but it's still an OLED panel like the Mate XX Pro, with a 20:10 by 1080 pixel resolution. The ratio for the screen is 18:7:9, which is fairly unusual but makes for easier interaction. I can see that I can do everything with one hand if I really want to, but I don't think I'd want to on a long-term basis. It's not as insane as a 7.2 inch screen sounds, at least on a phone where you can actually use it.

On the back of this phone, you'll see the wonderful Hyper Optic patent that Huawei has adopted for their new Mate 20 series. This is in blue, and there's also a silver version which looks even more stunning. The internals on the phone are actually the same as the Mate 20 in the May 20 Pro - you get a Kirin 980 processor, a triple camera on the back that's similar to the Mate it's fine, some details need to be confirmed, but one notable difference is the battery. This has got a whopping 5,000 milliamp hour battery, which is much larger than the four thousand hour or slightly smaller battery of its predecessors.

This phone also comes with six gigabytes of RAM and 128 gigabytes of storage space, as well as a 24 megapixel selfie camera hiding inside the teardrop knotch. The screen supports a stylus, which means this phone can challenge the Note series in terms of gaming ability. It's got lots of power, lots of storage, and lots of screen - and even a Nintendo Switch challenging gamepad that spits over the side to give you physical controls for your games.

The Huawei Mate 20X is really big, but it's not as ridiculous as you might think a 7-inch smartphone would be. The designers have managed to make this phone feel manageable despite its enormous size. It's definitely an interesting challenge in terms of user experience and usability.
