Are Head Gaskets Worth It?

Here is the reorganized text in a well-structured format:

**Is a Head Gasket Worth It?**

Yes, yes, okay. Yeah.

Video over. Yeah, that's right, headgaskets are worth it. Some might say that your engine can't even really run without one. But I know you've been on Craigslist or on eBay Motors looking at cars and you find one. It's perfect, it's cheap, it's got low miles. Everything seems great until you see it: a blown head gasket.

You start wondering, "Can I fix a head gasket?" What does it even take? How hard could it really be, and how much could it actually cost?

Well, luckily we've got the perfect lab rat for such an experiment. And it's right over there.

**The Experiment**

This isn't the only money pit Miata in the family. Eddie owns one too, and the head gasket is blown on that car as well. On this episode of [insert show name], we'll be exploring the world of head gasket repair.

(Engine revving sound)

(giggling)So I blew the head gasket, and generally speaking when you do thatthat's not the only thing that goes.I also overheated it.So I figured while I was in hereI'd go ahead and takethe whole thing apartand really go aheadand start from scratch. So I took it to a localmachine shop here in the Valleyand then I had thembasically start from zero.(house music)- So this is what's called an MLSor a multilayer steel head gasket. This is the sealthat goes between the bottomof your engine, the block, and the top of your engine, the head. And it's job is to makea pressure tight sealbetween the different systemsthat are at play in your engine. So we've obviously gotour combustion chamberswhere all the compressionis happening to make powerand actually drive thecar down the street. So obviously you want that to be sealed upso that no compression can leak out well. But we've also got our oil passageswhere oil goes from theblock up into the headand we need those to be sealedoff so that no oil leaks. And there's also coolant keepingthe engine nice and cool. And those need to be sealed as wellso that you don't get oil in your coolant, coolant in your oil,or oil in your combustion chamber,or coolant in your combustion chamber. The fact is that thisis a pretty simple thingand it's really not that hard to installand it's also not that expensive. So why are people so afraid of them? It's a very long and arduous processto install a head gasket.Let me show you.(drum rolling)Thank you guys for watching.I hope you had a good time.Follow Donut...All right, so now that we've made it soundway too easy to replace a head gasket, let's show you where the actual work lieswhich is over here.If you're replacing a head gasketyou're gonna have to do a lot of workto get to this point.I mean, just here, Eddie's had to take offhis intake manifold, his exhaust manifold, take off the air conditioning, take off the head andeverything attached to it.And now we're down to the head gasket. There's a lot of workthat goes into getting us to this point.Basically everythingthat comes in this videofrom this point forward but in reverse.Does that make sense? You've already gotten an all taken apartto replace the head gasket. We've got everything we needand you're confident about that.- Yeah, I am 95% certain--- I'll take that.- That this car is gonna start todayand work on all four cylinders.- I will take that. That's more confident than I'vebeen going into any episode.- This car doesn't start todayI'm buying a new one tomorrow.(Zach chuckling)(jazzy music)- Something that is paramountto installing a head gasketis making sure that thegasket surface is cleanor else the head gasketdoesn't stand a chance to do its job.(jazzy music)Yep, yep, yep, down, down.(jazzy music)The head gasket was in there, right?- Don't scare me like that.(jazzy music)- Alright, so my boy Eddie'sis getting the torque wrenchand we are ready to torque down the head. But the way you do that matters. There is a sequence andyou need to follow it.And honestly it's really simple, but we should talk about it.So in this case, and in most cases, what we're gonna do is tighteneddown from the center outjust so we tighten everythingdown nice and evenly. If we tighten down theentire intake side firstand then tighten down the exhaust sidewe'd probably warp the head, and we would forcefully warp itbecause one side would be tightened downand then we would forcethe other side down.We don't want to do that.We want to make things go down evenly. So we'll start in the middle, torque these two down, then we'll move here, then we'll move back here, then we'll move up here, then we'll back back here.(jazzy music)Bro, that's not the pattern, bro.- Unbelievable.- All right, so once you takean engine all the way apartto replace the head gasketor whatever you're doingyou're gonna have to get it back in time. The top end, the cams need to knowwhere the pistons are at orelse things aren't gonna run. We've got an extensionin cylinder number onedropped down the spark plug holeand Eddie's gonna turnthe crank with a ratchet. Now as we do that theextension we've got herewill act as a visual representationof what's going on in cylinder one.And we're looking for top dead center, the very top of its stroke. And that's basically the first ingredientto our timing recipe.- So now that cylinderone is at top dead centerI'm gonna go ahead anddo the same to the cams.Basically, there's these littlenotches on the front herethat line up perfectly with our gears. So I just give this boy a twist right hereuntil that notch is facingstraight at 12 o'clock. And then once we have that therewe know everything is in time.(funky music)So if we did everything correctlyand everything's in timewe should have 19 teethbetween each canned gear here.So now we just basically gotta go aheadand put the timing belttensioner on and we're in time. This is gonna be thefirst time she turns over.(Zach mimicking engine idling)(Eddie mimicking engine)- It's super smooth.(funky music)- Hey, I like this.- Yeah, what a role reversal.(funky music)- Gorgeous.(funky music)- Now to take off the front wheels. There's a little bracket thatholds up the intake manifoldand only way to accessthat is from the bottom.(funky music)So basically here's the entire harnessfor our coil pack and our injectors here.Basically the groundand everything we needto get to with our fuelsystem up and running.(jazzy music)- I can't tell you guyshow much I'm enjoying today's episode.Just supervising, offering a word of support every now, sometimes a negative word.- Just to get me to go quicker, right?- Mostly to hurt your feelings.(jazzy music)Not quite the cooling setupthat we've gotten the other onebut it'll do.(jazzy music)- And we got the second halfof the top part of themanifold here going in.(jazzy music)- All right, we've made a lot of progress. The engine itself ispretty much back togetherand I feel like this thing'sgonna run pretty soon.- I mean, I don't see why itwouldn't work at this point.- That's,those are the most frighteningthings you can say, my guy.- I know, I know.(jazzy music)- Alright, so Eddie,in terms of whether or notthis has been worth it,what do you think?- With $950 basically put into this build, when it turns on it's gonnabe absolutely worth it.Yeah, if it does not turn onafter everything we've done todayand everything I've done thus far,the money, the hours, then I would say it's 100% not worth it.So the last thing there is to dois to top it off with this distilled waterand then see if it turnsover, see if it runs.(engine turning over)(engine cranking up)- All right, all right.(water splashing)- If I were to go ahead and gauge the oddsof this all working here,I'm gonna stick with my original guess.95%, I'm gonna say 95%.Okay.- The light in your face--- All right, here's goliterally everything.(engine turning over)- Yeah, baby.Get that fuel pressure.(engine starting up)- It turned on.(engine starting up)(engine oddly rumbling)- There's a slightly odd noisecoming from the engine bay though.Well, what's up?- I don't know.Should I just turn itover and see what happens?- Yeah.(engine starting up)- You hear that?- Yeah, what's that?- I don't know.- Listen, it sounds healthy,it's probably great.I don't know what thatkind of whipping noise is.It's idling pretty solid now.Yeah, that noise is a little suspect. There's probably an idol setting processthat you need to go through.(engine idling)(engine revving)Yeah, that's a 1999 Mazda Miataidling on its own behind us.So from here obviouslythings aren't quite perfect. There's a little bit ofwork left to be done.It does idle but it's a little rough.(jazzy music)So it can be a little bit hairyto pick up somebody else's broken projectwithout really knowing what's going on.Maybe they kept drivingit after it blew upand then the engine is toast. The head gasket is not necessarilythe only thing thatneeds replacing anymore. Now there is one thing to considerI think that is important, and it's that you broke this car. That's a lot different I thinkthen taking on somebody else's projectthat has a blown head gasket. So if you're thinking about ityou really got to getin and do your researchand also understandyou're taking a gamble.Well hey, thank you guys for watching.I hope you enjoyed ourlittle field trip
