Using my First Smartphone in 2017

I'm Excited to Finally Get My Hands on My First Smartphone: The Palm Pixi Plus

Hey guys, it's Austin here, and today I'm thrilled to finally get my hands on my very first smartphone – the Palm Pixi Plus. Back in 2011, when I was rocking some seriously sweet hair, I picked up one of these babies for a whopping $50. And now that I've found a brand new, sealed-in-the-box model, I couldn't resist giving it another shot.

As you can see, smartphones have changed quite a bit since then. The Palm Pixi Plus came out in 2010 and was already considered small compared to modern smartphones. But what really blew my mind was how tiny it is – even smaller than the Galaxy S8. Even though it's compact, the phone actually has pretty decent hardware, which I appreciate.

One of the things that stands out about this phone is the soft touch rubber back. It still feels good even after all these years, but there are definitely some quirks to get used to. For example, the power button is tucked away on the corner, and the micro USB charging port is underneath a flap on the side. It's definitely not as straightforward as modern smartphones, but you have to remember that this was part of a more chaotic era in smartphone history.

This phone was just one of many releases after the iPhone first came out, Android was still relatively new, and Palm was trying to make a big splash with webOS. As I boot up the phone for the first time after seven years, it's amazing to see how well it still works. I'm getting flashbacks right now – this is so cool! It wasn't just because it was my first smartphone; it was actually something pretty cool back in the day.

Of course, smartphones have come a long way since then. A new smartphone is much, much superior to this one. But there are definitely some things that were not so bad back in the day. And boy, does this phone still work! Not only does it function perfectly, but it's like already up and running right away. The 50% battery life is impressive, and even the date is correct – what? It literally just activated itself, and I couldn't believe how seamless that was.

Unfortunately, the downside of buying a new webOS device today is that the actual servers to activate them are off. For example, when I try to turn on the App Catalog, there's no way it'll connect because well, it's not even on anymore – which is really weird considering this phone was already activated right out of the box.

As I start exploring what can be done with this ancient device, the first thing that stands out is the tiny keyboard. Ah, man, it brings back memories though! I actually used to be kind of decent with this keyboard. The YouTube app still works, although the old layout is a bit off – but hey, at least it's working.

One of the cool things about webOS was its multitasking capabilities. Even with this single-core processor and limited memory (8GB of storage), I'm pleasantly surprised by how smooth the responsiveness is. Swiping through my open apps or using it as a home button if you want – it's not bad at all. Of course, inside this device, you're talking about a 600-megahertz processor that's basically no match for modern smartphones.

However, the problem lies in the fact that most of the apps are so old and haven't been updated since 2011 that many of them just won't work – which is, unfortunately, really frustrating. Even with its limitations, though, this phone still has a perfectly functional web browser, which brings me joy. Can I get on Twitter with this? Do it, do it, do it!

Just when I thought things couldn't get any more disappointing, I realized that the lack of updates means most apps won't work – including Twitter. Man, I was really looking forward to sharing my excitement with you all! It's a hard truth to face, but sometimes things just don't go as planned.

But then something amazing happens – I take an old-school selfie with this phone and manage to capture it perfectly. The Palm Pixi Plus still takes great pictures! Now we've got that sick, sick Palm Pixi video. But what does Ken Bolido have to say about my harsh treatment of him? He responds with a tweet about how rude he felt, which is totally uncalled for.

As the video takes an unexpected turn and Ken's comments start pouring in, I can only shake my head at how quickly things escalated. From having a great time to going from excited about my old smartphone to being harsh towards each other – well, it was quite the ride!

WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: en- Hey guys, this is Austin, and today I'm here withmy very first smartphone. So back in 2011when I was rocking someseriously sweet hairI picked up one ofthese guys for 50 bucks, and today it's time togive it another shot.So this is the Palm Pixi Plus. Now I was able to find one ofthese brand new in the box,and since I didn't havemy original one anymoreI couldn't resist. As you can see, smartphones have changedjust a little bit since then.Oooh, yo!I've legit not held one ofthese in like five years. It's so tiny. (laughs)So this came out in 2010,and it's totally been sittingin the box since then.So let us enjoy.Oh!Dude, this brings me back.I can't believe how tiny it is.So back in 2010this was a little bit smallerthan most smartphones, but compared to today, I mean, look at it next to a Galaxy S8.It is absolutely tiny.Even though it's smallit actually has pretty decent hardware. So something that I really appreciateis the soft touch rubber back.It still feels good even today, but there are definitelysome weird quirks here. For example, the power buttonis sort of tucked away on the corner. The actual micro USB chargingis underneath this flap on the side. There's definitely some weirdness, but you have to remember, this was sort of like theWild West of smartphone days. This was just a few yearsafter the iPhone first came out,Android was brand new,and this was Palm's first big forayinto a more modern smartphone with webOS.What? It has battery? (laughs)This has legitimatelybeen sitting in a boxfor probably seven years now,and yet it just fired right back up.Yo, I'm getting like flashbacks right now. This is so cool.I actually really love this phone. It wasn't just because itwas my first smartphone. It was legitimately somethingpretty cool back in the day.Obviously, smartphoneshave come a long way. There's no doubt that a new smartphoneis much, much superior to this. But there are definitely some thingsthat were not so bad back in the day.It works. Not only does it work,it's like already up and running. What, 50% battery? It even has the date correct, what?It literally just activatedit so it's just onon like the first boot. Was this thing actually brand new?So the downside of buyinga new webOS device todayis that the actual serversto activate them are off.So for example, if you try to turn onlike the App Catalog or something, there's no way it's going to connect, because well, it's not even on anymore, which is really weird thatthis is already activated.Oh no, the YouTube app doesn't work.Oh man.I wanna see what I canactually still do with this.So the first thing isthe keyboard is so tiny.Aw, man, it brings back memories though.I actually used to be kindof decent with this keyboard.Oh, that is an old YouTube layout. It works though.Actually something kind of cool isthe responsiveness isn't bad.I mean sure, it's not thesmoothest and quickestdevice in the world, but one of the cool things about webOS wasit did multitasking really well.So I swipe up.I can go through my open apps,I can just swipe it away.I can also use it as ahome button if you want, but it's not bad.Of course I mean inside thisguy you're talking abouta single core, 600 megahertz processor, basically no memory, eight gigs of storage.I mean, this was not apowerful phone to begin with, but it's actually reasonably smooth, and that was one of thecool things about webOS.So the problem is is thatbasically all of the apps are so oldand have not been updated in so many yearsthat a lot of this stuffis actually just not gonna work, which is ah, that sucks.Even though it might not have apps,it still does have a perfectlyfunctional web browser. So, can I get on Twitter with this?Do it, do it, do it, do it.Oh, 404.Man, I was so excitedto finally use a Palm Pixi Plus again, and literally nothing works. It's almost like peopledon't want to supportan ancient phone with softwarethat no one has updated since like 2011.I should just give up right now.Nothing works. You don't have to rub it in, Ken.I get it, okay. This was a bad idea.Palm Pixi Plus is notas functional a phoneas I hoped it would be.Oh, you know what does work though, you know what does work, you know what does work, camera works. There we go, there we go.That's a, wait, okay. That was a picture.Boy, that's um, that's a picture. So um--Let's take like an old school selfie.Oh yeah, it totally took it!That actually is not, okay, well probablyshouldn't zoom in on it.I'll just, uh, yeah, alright. Now we've got that sick, sick Palm Pixi video. You have anything to say now, Ken?You wanna tweet this, huh?Wanna tweet this, wanna tweet this? That was uncalled for.I would like to officiallyand sincerely to Ken Bolidofor the rude manner inwhich I just treated him.Ken, oh, okay, I see, I see. This video took a hard turn.I went from having a great time,"Look how awesome the Palm Pixi Plus is!"It's my first smartphone."Now I'm like bitter and hating life.Ken is like ready to leave. The video is probablynever gonna be finished. But, if you wanna makeyour own bad decisions,I have two of these because I'm an idiotand thought that thephone was gonna be cool. So, if you wanna winyour own Palm Pixi Plus, leave a comment below, subscribe to the channel, and who knows? You too might be the proud ownerof a very mildly functioningsmartphone from 2010.If that's not a sales pitchto subscribe to the channel,I am afraid to sayI don't really know how todo it any better than that.So subscribe to the channel, stay tuned.Videos that are not terriblecoming soon, hopefully,if Ken lets me.
