**Insights from CES 2012: A Conversation with Ross from Mophie**

*Introduction*

At the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), technology enthusiasts gathered to explore the latest innovations. Among the many exhibitors, Mophie stood out for its expertise in battery technology and mobile accessories. In this article, we delve into a conversation between Renee from iMore and Ross from Mophie, offering an insightful look into their products, design philosophies, and future endeavors.

*The History of Mophie: Pioneers in Battery Technology*

Mophie has a rich history in the field of battery technology. Known for creating the original "juice pack," the company has been refining its product line for over nine generations. This long-standing commitment to innovation highlights their dedication to addressing evolving user needs and technological advancements.

*Product Design: Balancing Functionality and Aesthetics*

The conversation with Ross reveals that Mophie's design process is centered around user-centric solutions. For instance, they recognized the demand for devices compatible with large headphone ports or those needing car docking capabilities. This led them to develop a snap-on design, which offers flexibility in usage without compromising on durability.

Ross also shared insights into the challenges of creating flexible yet robust materials. The new juice pack features a unique boat-shaped design, allowing it to bend without stressing internal components. This innovation ensures durability and functionality, showcasing Mophie's commitment to high-quality craftsmanship.

*Battery Technology: Current Trends and Future Possibilities*

When discussing battery technology, Ross expressed optimism about future developments. While current batteries are reliable, he acknowledged the strain new features place on power consumption. He noted that advancements like fuel cell technology could revolutionize the industry, potentially allowing manufacturers to focus more on performance rather than power constraints.

*2012 Product Highlights: Innovation in Action*

Mophie's lineup for 2012 featured several standout products. Their latest offering is a robust 6,000 milliamp battery with an IP65 rating, designed for outdoor activities like camping and hiking. This device can charge devices ranging from iPods to Android phones, catering to families and groups who need reliable power sources.

Another notable product is the mopi Outdoor Edition, a GPS device that integrates seamlessly with iPhones. Equipped with 5 million square miles of high-def maps, it allows users to download maps offline, enhancing navigation capabilities without relying on data networks.

*Conclusion: Mophie's Vision for the Future*

As CES 2012 demonstrated, Mophie continues to push boundaries in mobile accessories. By identifying opportunities where iPhones and other devices can be enhanced with additional hardware, they aim to disrupt traditional markets like GPS and wearable technology. Ross's bold approach to innovation underscores Mophie's mission to deliver practical yet cutting-edge solutions for tech users worldwide.

This conversation highlights Mophie's dedication to improving battery technology and mobile accessories, ensuring their products remain indispensable in an increasingly connected world.

conference with a A plus in one pocket I have the new Air in the other pocket the minute I land on at my battery just starts to drain so you you guys are Absolut it's what we're known for it's our history we're the creators of the original juice back for the original High uh we're actually on our ninth generation of we've been in the business a long time and I think they've uh so that's was going to ask you I'm going to try and struggle and get this out but uh I just picked up a new one in fact and it is slightly different than the the air I had just a few months ago or a year ago um what what do you continue to do when you develop these products what what are you addressing so there's different things some people uh have really big headphone ports or want to be able to take this into their car and dock it to use their GPS so we actually decided to create this one which a Snap-On mergin so rather than sliding in and out as snaps on you snap it in and then you have the bottom open you can dock it or you can use the juice back itself and the top is completely open so it's open for any type of head home I spoke to you last year actually one of your engineers you're talking about how Carey water the materials that you use and it always amazes me how they're solid but flexible and you they're hard but they don't rittle yeah this one was actually a real challenge cuz we wanted to do a snap on design so actually what we did instead of the design it is now with the slider this is actually a hole shape like a boat so this remains flexible and then we dro the depth of the boat into it so this is completely flexible without bending the the actual batteries and electronics inside so it was a design challenge man this is a beautiful product absolutely so what do you do with the batteries themselves now I are batteries still look constant for you or you think the battery does think impr uh I hope they improve we all know that the processes are going toat what right so I'm not really paranoid about batteries becom you know so good that we don't need external but we stay on top of it I mean there's a lot of interesting things Apple just uh applied for a p using fuel cell technology uh we stay on top of it I mean like quad core processor in this phone right and people battery life has been an issue with the iPhone 4S a the processors right now they have to contend with power so they have to be very sensitive how much power they're drawing I think when we see the Battery Technology improve we're going to be like okay we don't have to worry about power anymore let's make it as powerful as possible but it seems like they make the battery better they add more features that we want to use more and therefore consume more power it's not it's never a game absolutely I mean look at look at the evolution from the iph they add a DPS they a 3G they're going to they're obviously going to get higher totally dependent on thator so uh I don't see battery great so what are you what what are the products that you show about CS going into 2012 um so right now we're we're we're back to basic so over the years we've seen us got into uh credit card processing uh we partnered with in on that partnered with mobile television with Qualcomm uh we had a haptic game for the uh the iPod uh I was actually a company that was owned by bar Material Science we with a lot of really big companies right now we're just talking about power U this is our latest uh device it's a 6,000 milliamp battery uh ip65 rated they actually get this wet you can get it dirty take it camping take it hiking and this will power anything lugged at 2.1 so take the whole family out you don't have to worry about power that's becoming an increased concern because maybe you have one your spouse has one your kids have kids and if there's only one charger you're going to have a fight absolutely so this one does 500 Milli charging all the way up to 2.1 so the kid can have an iPod mom can have an IP phone de can have an Android everybody's happy they can all use one uh One battery charge fantastic and you're still doing the PO stuff the cases the external still doing the the cases external batteries um we're going to have some some Flagship products for sure come out 2012 it's kind of a little more disruptive than what we're talking about at the CES well you know you explained some of their poing in the past and nothing surprises me where you guys are bold you're not afraid to take risks no we're two we're two doors down from Garin and right behind me we've got the the mopi outdoor Edition you buy this Cas it comes with 5 million square miles of highdef maps so you can basically take this with you download the maps before you go out there turn off 3G turn off Siri turn off everything you don't need and uh track everything you're doing and then share it when you get home upload it to to Facebook or whatever everybody can see where you went pictures you took uh and you don't need to go survivalist best friends yeah you don't need to go spend 7 or 800 bucks on a GPS and then another 100 bucks on that so we always try and see what can the iPhone do I mean there's there's all of these almost every Booth here that's not an accessory is a is a dedicated device you got a wearable Sports cam it's a mob lifestyle can can the iPhone do that with a little bit of Hardware from M or you've got dedicated GPS here I think we could probably be disrupted there so these are all opportunities where mopi is planning on swooping in and really turning everything on fantastic we thank you very much for your time pleasure Renee from imore CES 202 ohthis is your name from imore.com we at CES 2012 I'm talking to Ross from M how are you good how are you good first
