**iOS 12: A Comprehensive Guide to Its New Features**

The latest iteration of Apple's iOS operating system is packed with exciting new features that will enhance your overall user experience. From improved importing and managing raw photos on your iPhone, iPad, and iPad Pro, to force quitting apps without having to hold down on them, iOS 12 has got you covered.

**Improved Photo Management**

One of the notable improvements in iOS 12 is the ability to import and manage raw photos on your iPhone, iPad, and iPad Pro. This feature allows users to easily import their raw photos from their devices or via AirDrop. Additionally, the app's interface has been redesigned for better navigation and organization. Furthermore, there are new optimizations that enable faster performance when importing and managing raw photos.

**Force Quitting Apps**

Another exciting feature of iOS 12 is the ability to force quit apps without having to hold down on them. This feature allows users to quickly close unwanted apps by swiping up from the bottom of the screen. Furthermore, a new 3D Touch shortcut on the Camera app will jump you into the QR code reader, and vice versa.

**3D Touch Shortcuts**

The Notes app has also been updated with a 3D Touch shortcut to scan documents, allowing users to quickly access this feature without having to dig through menus. In addition, the Control Center has been revamped to include new 3D Touch shortcuts, including the QR code scanner and document scanning feature.

**QR Code Scanner**

The Notes app's 3D Touch shortcut for scanning documents is also available as a standalone icon in the Control Center. This makes it even easier for users to quickly access this feature without having to navigate through menus. Furthermore, there are new Siri suggestions, including opening links, which will pop up from Siri Spotlight Search and offer to open different links that users frequently access.

**Siri Suggestions**

The Note app has been updated with a few more 3D Touch shortcuts, allowing users to quickly access features like sending messages or making calls. Additionally, there are new English dictionaries and thesaurus available, which will enhance language skills.

**Reach Ability Improvements**

For iPhone 10 users, there have been some handy improvements made to Reach Ability. The ability to scroll within Reach Ability when it's enabled has been implemented, along with a new Chevron on top of Reach Ability that allows access to Notification Center and other features within the app.

**Extended Email Previews and Notifications**

The email client on iOS 12 now supports extended email previews on the lock screen and in notifications. This feature allows users to quickly view their emails without having to open the full message. Additionally, there are new options available for customizing mark-up colors and thickness in the Mark-up app.

**Mark-up App Improvements**

The Mark-up app has been updated with a range of exciting new features. These include a color picker that makes it easy to find the perfect shade, as well as the ability to change the mark-up thickness and opacity. Furthermore, dictation is now compatible with third-party keyboards, making it easier for users to type.

**Security Code Autofill**

One of the most exciting security-related features in iOS 12 is the autofill option for security codes. This feature allows users to automatically fill in their one-time passwords when required, reducing the risk of human error.

**Password Reuse Auditing System**

Another major security improvement in iOS 12 is the introduction of a password reuse auditing system. This feature analyzes user passwords and warns them if they have reused the same password across multiple accounts.

**Remote Control Support for Podcasts**

For podcast enthusiasts, iOS 12 introduces remote control support for podcasts when accessing an iPhone 10. This allows users to quickly skip forward or backward in their podcasts using the remote control button on their Apple Watch.

**Face ID Rescan and Screenshot Prevention**

When trying Face ID on an iPhone 10, if it initially fails to recognize your face, simply swiping up from the bottom of the screen will allow it to rescan your face. Additionally, there is a new feature to prevent screenshots being taken when the phone is locked.

**Live Listen Control Center Hearing Shortcut and Brightness Animation**

In the Control Center, there's now a new live listen control center hearing shortcut that allows users to quickly adjust their audio settings. Furthermore, the brightness control has been updated with a new animation that simulates the sun rising or setting as you increase or decrease the brightness.

**Student ID Option in Wallet**

The Wallet app has been updated with a new student ID option, allowing users to easily store and access their school IDs.

**Award Tab Redesign in Activity App**

Finally, the Activity app on iOS 12 features an updated design for its Awards tab. The new design includes competitions that are specifically designed for watchOS users, as well as other optimizations that enhance the overall user experience.

**What's Next?**

As mentioned earlier, iOS 12 will be launching this fall alongside TV OS 12 and Watch OS 5, as well as Mac OS Mohave. Stay tuned for more information on these exciting new features when they are released.

In conclusion, iOS 12 is a comprehensive update that includes numerous improvements across various aspects of the operating system. Whether you're looking to enhance your photo management capabilities or want to improve your overall security and productivity, iOS 12 has got you covered.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enwhat's going on everyone it is Andrew here for Apple Insider we've been here tinkering around with iOS 12 for about a week now we've compiled one of the biggest lists a date of everything new and changed here in iOS 12 so let's go ahead and dive in to kick things off let's go ahead and take a look at the stock applications and we actually have a brand new application here in iOS 12 and that is the new measure app that uses a art kit to measure things in the real world using the built in camera it can automatically detect objects like a poster on the wall highlight it in group around it'll give you the dimensions both the length width as well as the overall surface area if you don't have just a normal square object you can actually measure things mainly but it's adding points and it'll compute the distance in between them it is pretty darn accurate as well so for any quick measurements this will do just fine it'll work basically indoors nothing too large because the entire object has to be within your phone and you can only be a few feet away aside from that the level has been moved from the actual compass application to the new measure application that seems like a little bit of a better home for it we have a brand new icon for the voice memos app so it's just been tweaked a little bit has a little bit more color and if it did in the past and we also get a whole new redesign is the first major redesign to the voice memos app in quite some time in tangentially related news the voice memo app also is coming to the Mac so that's really awesome as well as the stocks application which also got a redesigned here in iOS 12 it looks really nice brand new welcome screen and it actually is now integrated with Apple news so you'll actually see news for the companies that you follow here in the stocks app when you pull up the news a ticker will run across the top it's really nicely done especially if you like Apple news and speaking of Apple news that also got a redesign here in iOS 12 we now have three tabs going across the bottom including the spotlight view in the center which gives you some highlights and some talking points some good stuff to start off with when you jump in the app and on the far right obviously we just have the Browse section we can search through all the different ones the topics the channels that you're following and get a little bit more information such as just jumping in and following Apple insider of course as had been rumored the iBooks app has now been renamed just ebooks or Apple books is the full title in the app itself has a new design these are really nice intro that walks you through kind of the different stuff that's going on here once you jump in we have a whole assortment of new tabs as well as a new reading now screen the store got a whole overhaul which is really nice it looks a little more editorialized similar to the app store and even music on iOS and now on the Mac there's a really nice card animation too so if I tap on like this David Baldacci book it pulls it up you can see as I swipe that card goes in full screen or I pull down I can jump between different books it's pretty nice it's a really nice little visual element the books section of these settings has now been updated just a little bit so if we leave the books app and go into the settings application there's a lot of new sections for a lot of apps and books is one of them just been slightly redesigned from where it was in the past so a few different more options and change the layout just a little bit here and lastly if we take a look at whether there are a few small changes inside of the stock weather app there's some new options down at the bottom so if you scroll all the way through all these readings at the bottom you can see we now have air quality and the air quality index and there is a corresponding setting to go along with that in iOS 11 we saw a major redesign coming to the App Store a whole lot of stuff changed I was 12 it's not nearly as Jurassic with only a few small changes if we check out the listing for the Apple insider app which I hear is fantastic there are a few few small changes we noticed the copyright info has been moved up from the bottom was all the way at the bun a little bit higher now we also see the numerical rating is explicitly given and the category placement was removed they used to be up here on the top it would say like 50th out of whatever 50th in the category that's been removed if we jump into the Settings app there are a lot of little changes in the settings so we're gonna try to go through them a little bit quickly we don't need to spend that much time in settings it's not that exciting compared to what else we have to show you so first up we obviously have a new wallpaper it's really nice we've been rocking it on our iPhone 10 for a little while now you may have noticed in some for other videos so we have one new wallpaper there in the top two wallpaper rows have been swapped so small changes swapping rows one going above the other for iPhone 10 users it is now possible to add a second face to your phone maybe your spouse or a partner can get into each other's phone it's really handy they call it an altar face ID so if we just scroll down the page you'll see set up in alternate up hearings so basically just ill has a second person to go in there and register their face so two people can unlock the same phones using face ID the battery panel in settings has been one of my favorite cuz there's a lot of stuff that you can glean from this about how much you're using your phone and how the performance is actually affecting it and what apps are kind of killing your battery life so you have all new enhanced battery statistics and we actually have persistent battery usage data so a lot of nice stuff to like here if you dig into that battery section a little bit more just to see a sign from that battery health that we saw with iOS 11 update this is a lot more that you can learn about the actual workings of your phone I know a lot of people hate having to do software updates and Apple trying to make that just a little bit easier in iOS 12 going to general then software update there's a new option to automatically install updates this way they'll just automatically install whenever they come in overnight and you'll never have to worry about them it's like me really handy for people who just don't care and just want to get those software updates installed automatically just while they're in bed we saw a little bit of reshuffling here in the settings application notably Control Center has moved down and the sound and haptic preferences were also relocated so a few small movements there we've a new option for do not disturb during bed time where all your stuff will be delivered silently in the background so they won't go on your lockscreen making a little bit less annoying when you wake up in the morning without see a thousand notifications already pouring in like we alluded you with the books preferences there and now a few different preferences for the stocks application here in the Settings app we also have a few different preferences for voice memos we actually have a few options we've never had for voice memos before including when they should automatically be deleted which I would I would like never to be honest I'm the audio quality and the default recording names iTunes you users will have a new settings option added and for those using the new measure app it's brand-new so of course there's a new preference panel for that we can changed the units from Imperial to metric there is no longer a system services location icon and the passwords and account preference had been slightly updated than how they were in the past there are also new options to not allow the wallet on the lock screen and there's an option to disable USB accessories on the lock screen backing up a little bit in going down a little bit of rabbit hole we're gonna go general then accessibility then switches and then inside of there there's a new option to always allow USB devices Siri female is now the default speech voice instead of Samantha as it was known in the past you can disable serious suggestions on the lock screen the emergency SOS call with the side button is now default and the slider that was there before that's been removed maps have now background app refresh toggle added and Samoa and Mexico have been added to the regulatory information lastly we also see slightly thicker sliders throughout the u.s. anytime there's gonna be a slider in the Settings app it can be just a tad thicker than it was in the past a little bit easier to see notifications are getting a major overhaul in iOS 12 they are finally grouped together and makes dealing with multiple notifications super easy you can tap on them and hapon show more or show less once you get in there you can also do a lot more granular control so aside from just dismissing them all you can manage them this is called instant tuning you can deliver quietly which means they go directly into the Notification Center but don't show up on the lockscreen right away or you can just completely turn them off without having to jump into the settings there's also some slightly different preferences UI to go along with it Siri is also a lot more robust now a Siri now works with low power mode we've a few new accents available so there is a Irish male accent in Irish female accent South African male accent and South African female accent Siri is now able to find passwords for you just ask her to find a specific password and she will do the search and open up the settings application authentic authenticating Hugh with face ID and getting you in to view them Siri can turn on the flashlight and turn off the flashlight something she was oddly unable to do in the past even she could do a lot of the other options from control center another requested feature of ours was the ability to find your devices and Siri can do just that I can ask my iPhone where my iPad is I can ask my iPad for my iPhone is my home pot or my Apple watch my devices are and when she finds it she's able just to make a noise on it it's that way you're able to listen for it and hear it it's basically the same thing as using the Find My iPhone app but you can ask just do Siri makes it actually a whole lot easier there's a new play music intent that can work with third-party music apps of course the apps have to be updated but you'll be able to do things like say play some music through Spotify one of my personal favorite features coming in iOS 12 is Siri shortcuts this will live as a standalone app to help create your own shortcuts but it will also be available inside of settings to create them based on common actions that you already do like messaging a specific person or visiting a certain website shortcuts are quick common tasks that you do repeatedly and they can be things like setting an alarm that you do quite often or setting a certain timer and you can assign a specific Siri command to each of those third-party apps can also get in on the fun for instance like if you have a tile tracker I could just say where my keys and it could make the tile tracker ring when creating a shortcut weather here in the Settings app or in the third-party application just record the audio that you want to use when invoking Siri in this case I want to start a video time call with Maksim Vadim so I could say start a FaceTime call and Siri will call both those guys on group FaceTime on the surface it seems Syrians can be a little bit intimidating and confusing to me luckily Apple is taking two different approaches one by allowing third-party developers to add the shortcuts right within their app so it makes it really easy to understand what you're going to be doing and they're releasing an actual shortcuts app this is gonna be really exciting and I can't wait to see what two developers start to do with it Siri now is awesome able to search for photo memories I can just ask for some memories of faith and I and it'll open up the Photos app and find some of those memories small change for Safari users but faith icons can now be shown in Safari tab by jumping into settings and under Safari we can now show icons in tab moving over to Safari opening up tabs you can see the little icons that now border the left-hand side these a little bit more colorful and easier to identify which sites are visiting when you open a tab messages isn't seeing the huge overhaul that we saw a last year but there's still a lot of things to love for there's a redesigned app strip along the top photos have been moved from inside of the camera to an actual standalone iMessage app allowing you to access your recent photos as well as your entire library whenever a message app is made full screen there's a little name along the top and you know which app that you're in lots of changes are coming to an emoji on the iPhone 10 and the new feature called MIMO G where you're allowed to actually create an emojis that look more or less like you or any character that you wish tapping the plus button on the left hand side will open up that creator where you can get really really my new with the details that you would just including different hair colors hairstyles accessories tons and tons of different stuff you can see a few of the ones we made here along the bottom any of those that you made you can go ahead and edit so you don't have to create a new one each time you can just duplicate one and make a few changes we're just edit existing ones you can also see we have tounge detection and a wink detection now assign from emojis and the me emoji maker we have four new an emojis coming to the iPhone which is a ghost t-rex koala and the tiger recording hime has also been lengthened going from ten seconds now all the way up to thirty should make creating those an emoji karaoke videos a whole lot easier when viewing things from the contacts app there's now a quick message shortcut there's an updated quicktype keyboard UI and there's some really cool changes to the actual camera app here in messages so it is now kind of like an iMessage app by itself even though it still has a standalone icon when you launch the camera app it goes right into the camera as you'd expect but there were also these tons of new effects that you can add including placing an emoji character or AM emoji character right over your own head and as you move your head around it'll track it and stay right on your shoulders it's kind of a cool effect there's also a bunch of new filters that you can add to these live photos as you're taking them there are different text effects different shapes that you can add and even stickers from Apple and other third parties can all be kind of overlaid onto your images and then shared it makes it really really easy to make it a bit more engaging and a lot of these things seem to be pulled from clips in actual apples editing fun kind of video app once a photo is captured you can a few different options on the bottom including jumping into markup adjusting the photo automatically or adding more effects once you're happy you can go ahead and send it off some help the new changes are coming to the Photos app there is a new photo search in new for you tabs within the actual photos application we had new sharing suggestions so when we have a memory such as this one here on top it'll automatically want me to share that and if it detects people in those photos so if it detected faith in these photos it would suggest that I share these photos with faith because she was at that event there are new album media types and there's a whole new updated import interface that is a whole lot easier especially over on iPad when looking at albums it also now Scrolls horizontally instead of vertically of course there still is vertical scrolling but in general it makes it a little bit easier to jump between albums shared etc another big feature coming to iOS 12 is called screen time against its own icon and section inside of the Settings app and it gives you an idea of how much you're using your phone and where you're spending that time there'll be a high-level breakdown right here on the top you can see under Andrews iPhone how much time I spent today using my phone I can get in and view that more granularly so I can see a breakdown a little bit more of where I spent my time throughout the day instead of just viewing today I can also get in there and see where spent the time during the last 7 days now regardless of whether you're looking at the today view or the last 7 debut there's a whole bunch of other metrics including just how much time you spend using your phone it'll break it down into different categories that you spent a time in and as you scroll you can see the apps that you use a lot the different times that you spend throughout the day how many times you actually pick up your phone how many notifications come in all this information which is really handy kind of gives you a better idea of how much you're using your device and give you quick access there's actually a Notification Center widget but that wasn't really working for me at least at the moment going along with screen time we have down time this helps you get a little bit of a rest from your phone by turning that on and scheduling it through certain hours it limits you to certain apps and helps you get a little bit of a break you can whitelist certain application so by default the phone messages and FaceTime are all wait-listed we can get in there and allow others like maybe I want to make sure I can still access activity or Dexcom to view my sensor once down time is enable and you can see all the other apps are disabled at the moment so they I try to get into one lake deck come it gives me a warning saying my time has been reached for the day but they can still be overridden you're not completely forced out of an app and there's nothing you can do you can simply tap on the ignore limit button and you'll have an option to either ignore it for the rest of the day or get a reminder in 15 minutes these applets as well as restrictions can be really helpful for kids as well rating them from accessing things they shouldn't be accessing or making sure that their gaming time and others are restricted to only certain hours and for certain amounts FaceTime users can rejoice because FaceTime and now works with groups known as group FaceTime and as you take video or audio calls with multiple people up to 32 in fact all at the same time in our testing it was a little bit funky kind of get everyone to connect but we are still in an early beta so this should be really exciting and it comes down the pipe going along with simply supporting up to 32 people there's a whole new UI change the app has been a little bit tweaked and when multiple in the app if the interface will change based on how many participants in the call I can see Max and Vadim right here tapping it brings it up a little bit back so you can see each of the different faces as well as controls along the bottom I can tap on next and I can actually make it a full screen if I want to get a better picture of Max's specifically and cut the deme right out going back to bringing up those controls if I tap on the little ellipsis in the bottom right hand corner I can see a few different options that we didn't have in the past including messaging all participants in the call during a call additional people can be added if that is necessary we saw some really cool camera FX over in the messages app and I'm happy to say all of those have made their way to FaceTime as well so while you're in a live FaceTime call you can throw some an emoji or meme og right over your head and carry out the conversation as yourself or a very fictitious looking version of yourself or any of the other common characters that we've seen for quite some time or the new ones there on the right live filters can be added giving you a little bit of different perspective as you're carrying out the call you can change these up which is pretty neat just like in messages stickers shapes texts can all be added as well into the background or does overlaid on top of your video this entry starts make it feel a little bit more like snapchat obviously it's a faraway thing from snapchat but it starts to make it feel more social a little bit more fun to have these FaceTime columns here you can see Vadim has thrown in an emoji heads and filter some stickers all in the background and they're all sticking into their location and moving kind of using a our kit group FaceTime works not only on iPhone and iPad but on the Mac as well and you can actually accept the call as audio on your Apple watch and then transfer the call to your iPhone when you get in a better location to jump on the video music there's a few cool optimizations here for users my favorite of which is the ability to search by lyrics instead of a song title or artist by putting in that lyric you can see oh I'm looking for you don't know me by Ben Folds when that song is playing and I lock my phone taking a glance at the lock screen reveals a darker UI for that now playing panel it so looks a little bit funny in my opinion but maybe that'll get changed as we get closer to release artist pages have gotten a little bit of a tweak a little bit more information and some changes there there's also a new featured radio station section having another radio tab we can see featured stations there were only four for me at the moment but I can see this building out over the long term home kit users got just a few small changes this year compared to last year where there were a lot of new accessories and automation added this year we only have one new accessory type which is remote and then able to work with things like the Apple TV and can even access Siri looking through the home pod the personal request preference has been moved from being in the kind of general whole home to now in the actual home pod itself also the panel that used to say details now has been replaced to say settings so when you access an accessory it just says settings instead of details because that makes more sense there's a new icon in the top left hand corner instead of like the compass arrow it is now been replaced to a home that's really what you're accessing your home data there's a new notification section here this could just be easier to enabling notifications for certain things like camera motion detectors or doors being unlocked these same things were here in the past they've just been reorganized into that new section inside of the whole home on the iPad we have a redesigned status bar the center is now opened up possibly for face ID in future models we also have the date included in the status bar as well we have some new iPhone 10 inspired gestures and could be will swipe down from the top right hand corner to access control center any users who have an Apple TV will also see the Apple TV app added to control center by defaults they don't have to worry about adding it themselves other gestures include the ability to swipe up from the bottom to go to the home screen as well as to use one finger to quickly switch between applications very similar to on the iPhone 10 the four finger gestures still work but it is pretty nice to be able to access control center and everything else just with one finger makes sense especially going between an iPhone 10 and an iPad you kind of mix up the gestures just some time out of muscle memory screen recording has a slightly updated UI opening control center tapping on started screen recording now you'll see an icon appear in the top right hand corner of the status bar letting you know that a screen recording is currently happening as usual once you tap on that it'll let you know that the screen recording is stopped and that the recording has been saved to the Photos app the iPad got a few new apps here in iOS 12 including voice memos and stocks you can see again that new UI looks very similar to the iPhone and the Mac OS counterpart stocks got its first major redesign that we already looked at it and it is here on the iPad as well you can see the stocks on the left with the Apple newsfeed over those relevant companies on the right hand side when using the on-screen keyboard in the past you could use two fingers to act kind of as a cursor control you can move it around and move your place in the text now that all works in me by long holding on the spacebar hold down with one finger and you can now move the cursor back and forth through your text there's also some new improvements to importing and managing raw photos on your iPhone iPad and adding them on the iPad pro further optimizations give us the ability to force quit apps without actually having to hold down on them we have a new 3d touch shortcut on the camera app that'll jump you into the QR code reader and of course that's just taking you into camera and it would do this by default but it gives you a little bit of a launch screen letting you know what QR code support means to go along with that if you 3d touch on the camera icon in control center you still have that QR code shortcut there the Notes app has a 3d touch shortcut to scan documents previously we had the option to custom - Control Center you could jump into the Settings app and add or remove different controls based on your workflow and even adjusting the order in iOS 12 we have one new addition to the list which is QR code scanner and what's kind of funny is it just does the same thing as jumping into the actual camera itself because you don't have to put it into QR code mode but a dusting as a standalone icon and it makes it a little bit more easy for people to know that it's there when looking up words either straight through 3d touching and hitting lookup or asking Siri there are new english dictionaries and there's a new english thesaurus available there are new Siri suggestions including opening links so it'll pop up right from Siri spotlight search and offer to open different links who are you ones that you access frequently if you use reach ability on the iPhone 10 there's a few really handy improvements including the ability to scroll within reach ability when it's enabled there's a new Chevron on top of reach ability that kind of changes you can access Notification Center all well within reach ability all of which makes it a lot more usable on the iPhone 10 there's new extended email previews when on the lockscreen and in notifications mark up has a whole host of new colors there's a new color picker makes it almost impossible to not find the color that you're looking for you can also change the mark-up thickness and opacity dictation and works with third-party keyboards there's security code autofill so it'll automatically take that one time pastor that you've gotten automatically filled in for you you can airdrop passwords don't worry these are fake ones just for this quick demo here but you can airdrop passwords right from the password section of the Settings app it'll now warn you about strong passwords and encourage you to use stronger ones there is a password API for third-party password apps there is a new password reuse auditing system the podcast app has a few new options in settings which allows you to actually change the functions of the skip forward and skip back buttons you can change the length of time for both of those there's also remote control skip support now for podcasts when accessing an iPhone 10 it's a little bit easier to try face-to-face ID again if it first doesn't recognize it simply a swipe up again from the bottom will allow it to rescan your face making a little bit easier just to act that if it misses it on the first go we the form of screenshot prevention so if we have an iPhone here we try to screenshot rate from the lockstate it will not work so that's kind of if you have your phone you go to wake it up and you press button the same time on accident it won't do it when the phones on it'll screenshot but when it's off and you press the volume up and the power at the same time it will not screenshot for accessibility users there's a new live listen control center hearing shortcut also in control center the brightness control has a new animation to it a little bit hard to see but the Sun kind of going up and down as you're increasing and decreasing the brightness the wallet will be adding a student ID option and you can disable Apple pay notifications per card inside of that wallet inside the awards tab in the activity app it has been redesigned a little bit we can see things like competitions which are new for watch iOS users and a few other optimizations iOS 12 is chock-full and new features and it doesn't stop at the 150 plus that we outlined today let us know if you find anything else new or which one's your favorite are down below in the comments iOS will be launching this fall alongside TV OS 12 watch OS 5 and Mac OS Mohave be sure to check out all of those roundup videos to see what's new in those as well if you enjoyed this video like it and hit that subscribe button also check out a price guide which makes it extremely easy to find the best deals and Apple products updated daily be sure to follow us on social media and we'll see you in the next videowhat's going on everyone it is Andrew here for Apple Insider we've been here tinkering around with iOS 12 for about a week now we've compiled one of the biggest lists a date of everything new and changed here in iOS 12 so let's go ahead and dive in to kick things off let's go ahead and take a look at the stock applications and we renamed just ebooks or Apple books is the full title in the app itself has a new design these are really nice intro that walks you through kind of the different stuff that's going on here once you jump in we have a whole assortment of new tabs as well as a new reading now screen the store got a whole overhaul which is really nice it looks a little more editorialized similar to the app store and even music on iOS and now on the Mac there's a really nice card animation too so if I tap on like this David Baldacci book it pulls it up you can see as I swipe that card goes in full screen or I pull down I can jump between different books it's pretty nice it's a really nice little visual element the books section of these settings has now been updated just a little bit so if we leave the books app and go into the settings application there's a lot of new sections for a lot of apps and books is one of them just been slightly redesigned from where it was in the past so a few different more options and change the layout just a little bit here and lastly if we take a look at whether there are a few small changes inside of the stock weather app there's some new options down at the bottom so if you scroll all the way through all these readings at the bottom you can see we now have air quality and the air quality index and there is a corresponding setting to go along with that in iOS 11 we saw a major redesign coming to the App Store a whole lot of stuff changed I was 12 it's not nearly as Jurassic with only a few small changes if we check out the listing for the Apple insider app which I hear is fantastic there are a few few small changes we noticed the copyright info has been moved up from the bottom was all the way at the bun a little bit higher now we also see the numerical rating is explicitly given and the category placement was removed they used to be up here on the top it would say like 50th out of whatever 50th in the category that's been removed if we jump into the Settings app there are a lot of little changes in the settings so we're gonna try to go through them a little bit quickly we don't need to spend that much time in settings it's not that exciting compared to what else we have to show you so first up we obviously have a new wallpaper it's really nice we've been rocking it on our iPhone 10 for a little while now you may have noticed in some for other videos so we have one new wallpaper there in the top two wallpaper rows have been swapped so small changes swapping rows one going above the other for iPhone 10 users it is now possible to add a second face to your phone maybe your spouse or a partner can get into each other's phone it's really handy they call it an altar face ID so if we just scroll down the page you'll see set up in alternate up hearings so basically just ill has a second person to go in there and register their face so two people can unlock the same phones using face ID the battery panel in settings has been one of my favorite cuz there's a lot of stuff that you can glean from this about how much you're using your phone and how the performance is actually affecting it and what apps are kind of killing your battery life so you have all new enhanced battery statistics and we actually have persistent battery usage data so a lot of nice stuff to like here if you dig into that battery section a little bit more just to see a sign from that battery health that we saw with iOS 11 update this is a lot more that you can learn about the actual workings of your phone I know a lot of people hate having to do software updates and Apple trying to make that just a little bit easier in iOS 12 going to general then software update there's a new option to automatically install updates this way they'll just automatically install whenever they come in overnight and you'll never have to worry about them it's like me really handy for people who just don't care and just want to get those software updates installed automatically just while they're in bed we saw a little bit of reshuffling here in the settings application notably Control Center has moved down and the sound and haptic preferences were also relocated so a few small movements there we've a new option for do not disturb during bed time where all your stuff will be delivered silently in the background so they won't go on your lockscreen making a little bit less annoying when you wake up in the morning without see a thousand notifications already pouring in like we alluded you with the books preferences there and now a few different preferences for the stocks application here in the Settings app we also have a few different preferences for voice memos we actually have a few options we've never had for voice memos before including when they should automatically be deleted which I would I would like never to be honest I'm the audio quality and the default recording names iTunes you users will have a new settings option added and for those using the new measure app it's brand-new so of course there's a new preference panel for that we can changed the units from Imperial to metric there is no longer a system services location icon and the passwords and account preference had been slightly updated than how they were in the past there are also new options to not allow the wallet on the lock screen and there's an option to disable USB accessories on the lock screen backing up a little bit in going down a little bit of rabbit hole we're gonna go general then accessibility then switches and then inside of there there's a new option to always allow USB devices Siri female is now the default speech voice instead of Samantha as it was known in the past you can disable serious suggestions on the lock screen the emergency SOS call with the side button is now default and the slider that was there before that's been removed maps have now background app refresh toggle added and Samoa and Mexico have been added to the regulatory information lastly we also see slightly thicker sliders throughout the u.s. anytime there's gonna be a slider in the Settings app it can be just a tad thicker than it was in the past a little bit easier to see notifications are getting a major overhaul in iOS 12 they are finally grouped together and makes dealing with multiple notifications super easy you can tap on them and hapon show more or show less once you get in there you can also do a lot more granular control so aside from just dismissing them all you can manage them this is called instant tuning you can deliver quietly which means they go directly into the Notification Center but don't show up on the lockscreen right away or you can just completely turn them off without having to jump into the settings there's also some slightly different preferences UI to go along with it Siri is also a lot more robust now a Siri now works with low power mode we've a few new accents available so there is a Irish male accent in Irish female accent South African male accent and South African female accent Siri is now able to find passwords for you just ask her to find a specific password and she will do the search and open up the settings application authentic authenticating Hugh with face ID and getting you in to view them Siri can turn on the flashlight and turn off the flashlight something she was oddly unable to do in the past even she could do a lot of the other options from control center another requested feature of ours was the ability to find your devices and Siri can do just that I can ask my iPhone where my iPad is I can ask my iPad for my iPhone is my home pot or my Apple watch my devices are and when she finds it she's able just to make a noise on it it's that way you're able to listen for it and hear it it's basically the same thing as using the Find My iPhone app but you can ask just do Siri makes it actually a whole lot easier there's a new play music intent that can work with third-party music apps of course the apps have to be updated but you'll be able to do things like say play some music through Spotify one of my personal favorite features coming in iOS 12 is Siri shortcuts this will live as a standalone app to help create your own shortcuts but it will also be available inside of settings to create them based on common actions that you already do like messaging a specific person or visiting a certain website shortcuts are quick common tasks that you do repeatedly and they can be things like setting an alarm that you do quite often or setting a certain timer and you can assign a specific Siri command to each of those third-party apps can also get in on the fun for instance like if you have a tile tracker I could just say where my keys and it could make the tile tracker ring when creating a shortcut weather here in the Settings app or in the third-party application just record the audio that you want to use when invoking Siri in this case I want to start a video time call with Maksim Vadim so I could say start a FaceTime call and Siri will call both those guys on group FaceTime on the surface it seems Syrians can be a little bit intimidating and confusing to me luckily Apple is taking two different approaches one by allowing third-party developers to add the shortcuts right within their app so it makes it really easy to understand what you're going to be doing and they're releasing an actual shortcuts app this is gonna be really exciting and I can't wait to see what two developers start to do with it Siri now is awesome able to search for photo memories I can just ask for some memories of faith and I and it'll open up the Photos app and find some of those memories small change for Safari users but faith icons can now be shown in Safari tab by jumping into settings and under Safari we can now show icons in tab moving over to Safari opening up tabs you can see the little icons that now border the left-hand side these a little bit more colorful and easier to identify which sites are visiting when you open a tab messages isn't seeing the huge overhaul that we saw a last year but there's still a lot of things to love for there's a redesigned app strip along the top photos have been moved from inside of the camera to an actual standalone iMessage app allowing you to access your recent photos as well as your entire library whenever a message app is made full screen there's a little name along the top and you know which app that you're in lots of changes are coming to an emoji on the iPhone 10 and the new feature called MIMO G where you're allowed to actually create an emojis that look more or less like you or any character that you wish tapping the plus button on the left hand side will open up that creator where you can get really really my new with the details that you would just including different hair colors hairstyles accessories tons and tons of different stuff you can see a few of the ones we made here along the bottom any of those that you made you can go ahead and edit so you don't have to create a new one each time you can just duplicate one and make a few changes we're just edit existing ones you can also see we have tounge detection and a wink detection now assign from emojis and the me emoji maker we have four new an emojis coming to the iPhone which is a ghost t-rex koala and the tiger recording hime has also been lengthened going from ten seconds now all the way up to thirty should make creating those an emoji karaoke videos a whole lot easier when viewing things from the contacts app there's now a quick message shortcut there's an updated quicktype keyboard UI and there's some really cool changes to the actual camera app here in messages so it is now kind of like an iMessage app by itself even though it still has a standalone icon when you launch the camera app it goes right into the camera as you'd expect but there were also these tons of new effects that you can add including placing an emoji character or AM emoji character right over your own head and as you move your head around it'll track it and stay right on your shoulders it's kind of a cool effect there's also a bunch of new filters that you can add to these live photos as you're taking them there are different text effects different shapes that you can add and even stickers from Apple and other third parties can all be kind of overlaid onto your images and then shared it makes it really really easy to make it a bit more engaging and a lot of these things seem to be pulled from clips in actual apples editing fun kind of video app once a photo is captured you can a few different options on the bottom including jumping into markup adjusting the photo automatically or adding more effects once you're happy you can go ahead and send it off some help the new changes are coming to the Photos app there is a new photo search in new for you tabs within the actual photos application we had new sharing suggestions so when we have a memory such as this one here on top it'll automatically want me to share that and if it detects people in those photos so if it detected faith in these photos it would suggest that I share these photos with faith because she was at that event there are new album media types and there's a whole new updated import interface that is a whole lot easier especially over on iPad when looking at albums it also now Scrolls horizontally instead of vertically of course there still is vertical scrolling but in general it makes it a little bit easier to jump between albums shared etc another big feature coming to iOS 12 is called screen time against its own icon and section inside of the Settings app and it gives you an idea of how much you're using your phone and where you're spending that time there'll be a high-level breakdown right here on the top you can see under Andrews iPhone how much time I spent today using my phone I can get in and view that more granularly so I can see a breakdown a little bit more of where I spent my time throughout the day instead of just viewing today I can also get in there and see where spent the time during the last 7 days now regardless of whether you're looking at the today view or the last 7 debut there's a whole bunch of other metrics including just how much time you spend using your phone it'll break it down into different categories that you spent a time in and as you scroll you can see the apps that you use a lot the different times that you spend throughout the day how many times you actually pick up your phone how many notifications come in all this information which is really handy kind of gives you a better idea of how much you're using your device and give you quick access there's actually a Notification Center widget but that wasn't really working for me at least at the moment going along with screen time we have down time this helps you get a little bit of a rest from your phone by turning that on and scheduling it through certain hours it limits you to certain apps and helps you get a little bit of a break you can whitelist certain application so by default the phone messages and FaceTime are all wait-listed we can get in there and allow others like maybe I want to make sure I can still access activity or Dexcom to view my sensor once down time is enable and you can see all the other apps are disabled at the moment so they I try to get into one lake deck come it gives me a warning saying my time has been reached for the day but they can still be overridden you're not completely forced out of an app and there's nothing you can do you can simply tap on the ignore limit button and you'll have an option to either ignore it for the rest of the day or get a reminder in 15 minutes these applets as well as restrictions can be really helpful for kids as well rating them from accessing things they shouldn't be accessing or making sure that their gaming time and others are restricted to only certain hours and for certain amounts FaceTime users can rejoice because FaceTime and now works with groups known as group FaceTime and as you take video or audio calls with multiple people up to 32 in fact all at the same time in our testing it was a little bit funky kind of get everyone to connect but we are still in an early beta so this should be really exciting and it comes down the pipe going along with simply supporting up to 32 people there's a whole new UI change the app has been a little bit tweaked and when multiple in the app if the interface will change based on how many participants in the call I can see Max and Vadim right here tapping it brings it up a little bit back so you can see each of the different faces as well as controls along the bottom I can tap on next and I can actually make it a full screen if I want to get a better picture of Max's specifically and cut the deme right out going back to bringing up those controls if I tap on the little ellipsis in the bottom right hand corner I can see a few different options that we didn't have in the past including messaging all participants in the call during a call additional people can be added if that is necessary we saw some really cool camera FX over in the messages app and I'm happy to say all of those have made their way to FaceTime as well so while you're in a live FaceTime call you can throw some an emoji or meme og right over your head and carry out the conversation as yourself or a very fictitious looking version of yourself or any of the other common characters that we've seen for quite some time or the new ones there on the right live filters can be added giving you a little bit of different perspective as you're carrying out the call you can change these up which is pretty neat just like in messages stickers shapes texts can all be added as well into the background or does overlaid on top of your video this entry starts make it feel a little bit more like snapchat obviously it's a faraway thing from snapchat but it starts to make it feel more social a little bit more fun to have these FaceTime columns here you can see Vadim has thrown in an emoji heads and filter some stickers all in the background and they're all sticking into their location and moving kind of using a our kit group FaceTime works not only on iPhone and iPad but on the Mac as well and you can actually accept the call as audio on your Apple watch and then transfer the call to your iPhone when you get in a better location to jump on the video music there's a few cool optimizations here for users my favorite of which is the ability to search by lyrics instead of a song title or artist by putting in that lyric you can see oh I'm looking for you don't know me by Ben Folds when that song is playing and I lock my phone taking a glance at the lock screen reveals a darker UI for that now playing panel it so looks a little bit funny in my opinion but maybe that'll get changed as we get closer to release artist pages have gotten a little bit of a tweak a little bit more information and some changes there there's also a new featured radio station section having another radio tab we can see featured stations there were only four for me at the moment but I can see this building out over the long term home kit users got just a few small changes this year compared to last year where there were a lot of new accessories and automation added this year we only have one new accessory type which is remote and then able to work with things like the Apple TV and can even access Siri looking through the home pod the personal request preference has been moved from being in the kind of general whole home to now in the actual home pod itself also the panel that used to say details now has been replaced to say settings so when you access an accessory it just says settings instead of details because that makes more sense there's a new icon in the top left hand corner instead of like the compass arrow it is now been replaced to a home that's really what you're accessing your home data there's a new notification section here this could just be easier to enabling notifications for certain things like camera motion detectors or doors being unlocked these same things were here in the past they've just been reorganized into that new section inside of the whole home on the iPad we have a redesigned status bar the center is now opened up possibly for face ID in future models we also have the date included in the status bar as well we have some new iPhone 10 inspired gestures and could be will swipe down from the top right hand corner to access control center any users who have an Apple TV will also see the Apple TV app added to control center by defaults they don't have to worry about adding it themselves other gestures include the ability to swipe up from the bottom to go to the home screen as well as to use one finger to quickly switch between applications very similar to on the iPhone 10 the four finger gestures still work but it is pretty nice to be able to access control center and everything else just with one finger makes sense especially going between an iPhone 10 and an iPad you kind of mix up the gestures just some time out of muscle memory screen recording has a slightly updated UI opening control center tapping on started screen recording now you'll see an icon appear in the top right hand corner of the status bar letting you know that a screen recording is currently happening as usual once you tap on that it'll let you know that the screen recording is stopped and that the recording has been saved to the Photos app the iPad got a few new apps here in iOS 12 including voice memos and stocks you can see again that new UI looks very similar to the iPhone and the Mac OS counterpart stocks got its first major redesign that we already looked at it and it is here on the iPad as well you can see the stocks on the left with the Apple newsfeed over those relevant companies on the right hand side when using the on-screen keyboard in the past you could use two fingers to act kind of as a cursor control you can move it around and move your place in the text now that all works in me by long holding on the spacebar hold down with one finger and you can now move the cursor back and forth through your text there's also some new improvements to importing and managing raw photos on your iPhone iPad and adding them on the iPad pro further optimizations give us the ability to force quit apps without actually having to hold down on them we have a new 3d touch shortcut on the camera app that'll jump you into the QR code reader and of course that's just taking you into camera and it would do this by default but it gives you a little bit of a launch screen letting you know what QR code support means to go along with that if you 3d touch on the camera icon in control center you still have that QR code shortcut there the Notes app has a 3d touch shortcut to scan documents previously we had the option to custom - Control Center you could jump into the Settings app and add or remove different controls based on your workflow and even adjusting the order in iOS 12 we have one new addition to the list which is QR code scanner and what's kind of funny is it just does the same thing as jumping into the actual camera itself because you don't have to put it into QR code mode but a dusting as a standalone icon and it makes it a little bit more easy for people to know that it's there when looking up words either straight through 3d touching and hitting lookup or asking Siri there are new english dictionaries and there's a new english thesaurus available there are new Siri suggestions including opening links so it'll pop up right from Siri spotlight search and offer to open different links who are you ones that you access frequently if you use reach ability on the iPhone 10 there's a few really handy improvements including the ability to scroll within reach ability when it's enabled there's a new Chevron on top of reach ability that kind of changes you can access Notification Center all well within reach ability all of which makes it a lot more usable on the iPhone 10 there's new extended email previews when on the lockscreen and in notifications mark up has a whole host of new colors there's a new color picker makes it almost impossible to not find the color that you're looking for you can also change the mark-up thickness and opacity dictation and works with third-party keyboards there's security code autofill so it'll automatically take that one time pastor that you've gotten automatically filled in for you you can airdrop passwords don't worry these are fake ones just for this quick demo here but you can airdrop passwords right from the password section of the Settings app it'll now warn you about strong passwords and encourage you to use stronger ones there is a password API for third-party password apps there is a new password reuse auditing system the podcast app has a few new options in settings which allows you to actually change the functions of the skip forward and skip back buttons you can change the length of time for both of those there's also remote control skip support now for podcasts when accessing an iPhone 10 it's a little bit easier to try face-to-face ID again if it first doesn't recognize it simply a swipe up again from the bottom will allow it to rescan your face making a little bit easier just to act that if it misses it on the first go we the form of screenshot prevention so if we have an iPhone here we try to screenshot rate from the lockstate it will not work so that's kind of if you have your phone you go to wake it up and you press button the same time on accident it won't do it when the phones on it'll screenshot but when it's off and you press the volume up and the power at the same time it will not screenshot for accessibility users there's a new live listen control center hearing shortcut also in control center the brightness control has a new animation to it a little bit hard to see but the Sun kind of going up and down as you're increasing and decreasing the brightness the wallet will be adding a student ID option and you can disable Apple pay notifications per card inside of that wallet inside the awards tab in the activity app it has been redesigned a little bit we can see things like competitions which are new for watch iOS users and a few other optimizations iOS 12 is chock-full and new features and it doesn't stop at the 150 plus that we outlined today let us know if you find anything else new or which one's your
