Welcome to Detroit for the 2014 Motor Show
The 2014 motor show is off to a great start, with major international support still strong. The likes of BMW are bringing us new M3 and M4 models, Toyota is showcasing its FT1 concept car, and Mercedes-Benz is introducing its latest C-Class model. As always, the Detroit show features some exciting homegrown stars, including the new Ford Mustang and Chevrolet's answer to the Porsche 911.
Looking at Some Show Cars
The car behind me is the new BMW M4, which marks its world debut here in Detroit. This new name for the BMW M3 Coupe brings forced induction to the M3 for the first time with a twin-turbocharged 3-liter straight-six engine producing 425 brake horsepower and a top speed of 62 mph in just 4.1 seconds. If you opt for the optional s-speed automatic gearbox, it will be available in the UK this summer.
The Mustang is 50 years old, and Ford is celebrating this milestone with its all-new model behind me. This car is claimed to be the most sophisticated Mustang yet, with an independent rear suspension finally being adopted instead of the live rear axle. It's got the usual V6 and V8 engines, as well as a new 4-cylinder 2.3-liter Ecoboost engine producing 305 brake horsepower, aimed at the European market. The Mustang will be sold in the UK and made right-hand drive for the first time.
The Car with the Strongest Case for Star of the Show
While opinions may vary, it's clear that the Toyota FT1 concept car is having a significant impact on visitors to the show. Its sheer popularity speaks volumes about its design and potential appeal. The FT1 was created by Toyota's Cy design team in California and references classic front-engine, rear-drive Toyota sports cars from the past, such as the Supra. However, details on the car itself are still scarce, with only a virtual drive experience available through Gran Turismo 6.
Mercedes-Benz is Bringing Its Best to Detroit
Outside and Inside the Mercedes-Benz C-Class
When it comes to luxury vehicles, few brands do it better than Mercedes-Benz. The latest addition to its lineup is the C-Class model showcased here at the Detroit motor show. As impressive as the exterior looks, the interior takes things up a notch with features such as circular air vents, a freestanding infotainment screen, and nice wood trim. One of the standout features is the touchpad that controls all the infotainment functions and mimics a smartphone, showing just how far ahead Mercedes-Benz is in terms of design and technology.
The Kia GT4 Stinger Concept
Kia's latest concept car is the GT4 Stinger, a compact 4.3-meter-long sports car with a 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine producing over 300 brake horsepower. The design may not be to everyone's taste, but there's no denying its impressive looks and potential appeal. As of now, Kia hasn't announced any plans for production in the near future, with rumors suggesting it might arrive as early as 2016.
Porsche's Latest 911 Target
Last but certainly not least is Porsche's latest 911 Target model. The 1967 original inspired this new design, featuring a fixed rollover loop and convex rear screen. This time around, there's the added convenience of an electronic roof that folds behind the seats, along with 4-wheel drive and its usual array of flat-six engines. When it hits UK roads in May at a price of £86,000, it will undoubtedly be a thrilling experience.
The Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Z06: The General Motors Answer
Last but certainly not least is the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Z06, which can be seen as the general motors answer to the Porsche 911 GT3. With its supercharged engine for the first time producing 6.2 liters of power and 625 brake horsepower, this car promises an exhilarating experience on UK roads. While official performance figures aren't available just yet, it's clear that it will be a highly sought-after model when it arrives next year as part of the official import program.
In conclusion, the 2014 Detroit motor show is turning out to be quite exciting with some exceptional models and concepts on display. Whether you're a fan of luxury vehicles or high-performance cars, there's something for everyone here. With so much variety and innovation on offer, it's certainly shaping up to be an excellent year for car enthusiasts.
