The Ridge Motorsports Park: A Test Drive with the 2019 Chevy Camaro Turbo 1LE
I'm Eric Bryan, and I'm here at the Ridge Motorsports Park in Washington State, driving the 2019 Chevy Camaro turbo 1LE. This is the first time that the one le track package is available on the turbocharged four-cylinder Camaro from our my thoughts on this car click on the link below and check out my column on autotrader.com.
The whole Camaro range gets a facelift for the 2019 model year with an updated exterior. The most noticeable difference between this and the outgoing model is the new front end that seems to be a bit of a love it or hated design. The rest of the body continues to have retro inspiration with plenty of modern flair.
The one le package upgrades this turbo Camaro with a sports suspension, Brembo 4-piston brakes up front, an improved cooling system, a limited slip differential in black 20-inch wheels with Goodyear Eagle F1 performance tires. A few aesthetic giveaways of the one at lea include a black front splitter, a black rear spoiler, and a black hood.
The Camaro starts at just $30,995 which makes it a pretty good value in four-cylinder performance coupes. An available option on this one le Camaro is this performance data and video recorder that can be had for an extra $1,300 on the three LT trim. It shows you as phenomena tachometer gear indicator a lateral g-force gauge and it tells you how many miles you've traveled since you started recording.
As a track car, this Camaro is a strong performer even if a bit underpowered compared to more expensive Camaros with more cylinders. The torque curve and power delivery will take a little bit of getting used to if you're accustomed to driving naturally aspirated Camaros on the track. It may be the only new Camaro with less than 300 horsepower but it's fun to be able to drive it at its limits without ever feeling like it's getting away from you.
The torque comes on early as it often does with turbocharged cars and it starts to drop off about a thousand rpm or so below the red line. That means you have to kind of train yourself to shift a little earlier than you normally would. Once you're past the learning curve, the upgrades to the suspension brakes and tires really shine. The whole package comes together nicely when you put the car in track mode making you feel like it's wrapped around your waist.
Making adjustments to the ride switching between sport mode and touring mode makes it more fun in the twisties and more comfortable on the highway. Unfortunately, visibility hasn't gotten any better but that's part of the price you pay for the styling of the Camaro. The wine Utley package is a really nice performance upgrade for the four-cylinder Camaro. It's great for anyone who wants to get into track driving or just wants a fun toy to bring to the track once in a while.
That you can also drive on the street this car has got some tough competition from the EcoBoost Mustang but the best way to know which American sports car is right for you is to test drive them for yourself.
