The Great Electric Drag Race Debacle: A Tale of Triumph and Tribulation

As we stood at the starting line, clad in our winter warmest, our eyes fixed on the horizon, and our fingers numb from the cold, it was hard not to feel a sense of trepidation. We had decided to pit our trusty old Land Rover Defender against a sleek electric car, with the quarter mile as our playing field. The driver of the electric car, none other than Richard, gave us a reassuring smile and we set off.

The car that would start us off was Richard's, a Tesla motor mated to an old Defender body, a sight to behold indeed. I couldn't help but wonder if it had been a madman who thought bringing a convertible to a drag race in January was a good idea. The temperature outside was biting, and the thought of getting into the car was less than appealing. But, as the saying goes, "when life gives you lemons, make lemonade," or in our case, when life gives you -20 degrees Celsius, get in the car and let's do this.

I peered at Richard, who looked like he had just stepped out of a winter wonderland scene. His eyes were worried, his nose was running, and his bum seemed to have gone numb from the cold. I felt a pang of sympathy for my fellow competitor, but also a sense of determination. We would not let a little thing like hypothermia get in our way.

As we climbed into our respective vehicles, a flurry of activity ensued. Richard asked me to pull back on the gear stick and put it in D. "Just imagine you're grabbing a ball," he said with a chuckle, as I struggled to do so. The car seemed to be resisting my every move, but eventually, I managed to get it into gear. With a loud roar, we set off.

The speedometer ticked upwards, and the electric car quickly pulled ahead of us. Richard's eyes lit up with excitement as he shouted "go" from behind his wheel. The sound of the engine was music to my ears, but I couldn't help but feel a twinge of disappointment. We were lagging far behind, and it seemed like we might not even make it to the quarter mile.

But then, Richard did something that made me laugh. He started making funny faces at the camera, his eyes worried, his nose running, and his bum seemingly frozen in place. I couldn't help but chuckle at his antics, despite my own struggles with the cold. "Dramatic competition" he called it, as he executed a spectacular drift on the electric car.

As we approached the quarter mile mark, Richard pulled off an incredible maneuver, locking up the brakes and screeching to a halt just inches from disaster. The drama was palpable, and I could almost see him waving his arms in panic. Meanwhile, I was struggling to keep my seat warm, my teeth chattering with cold.

But, as we crossed the finish line, it became clear that Richard had won the day. His electric car had left us in its dust, and he was beaming with pride. We couldn't help but congratulate him on his victory, despite our own crushing defeat.

As we climbed out of our cars, shaking off the cold, I couldn't help but feel a sense of admiration for Richard's driving skills. The electric motor seemed to have turbo-charged his brakes, giving him an edge that we just couldn't match. And, as we stood there, chatting about the race, it became clear that this was not just a competition, but a test of our mettle.

In the end, it was Richard who had won both the competition and the dramatic award. But, for me, the real prize was the chance to experience the thrill of electric drag racing, even if I didn't quite live up to my own expectations. As we packed up our gear and bid each other farewell, I couldn't help but wonder what the future held for us, both on and off the track.

because next to me is an old Land Rover Defender but a very special one too more about that in a moment and then on the far side is the new Land Rover Defender V8 and of course we are gonna have a drag race let me start off by telling you about this particular Land Rover Defender because it's by iconic and they've done quite a lot of work to it probably seen by the interior look this lovely trimmed interior it feels slightly sexual in this color but very very well done it's like it's new and it's better than you when we're talking about now there is something a little bit kind of strange that's concerning me and um yeah it adds to the sexual theme because let me show you this with this camera the gear selector there it sort of looks like it's been trimmed from a bull's foreskin can you see that yeah yeah I can't unsee it now anyway that's not the important thing about this car what it is is what's under the Bonnet so they're swapped out the normal engine and it's now got a Chevy 6.2 liter LS3 V8 which puts out 436 horsepower and 475 newton meters of torque and obviously it drives all four wheels for a six-speed automatic gearbox this thing weighs in a 1860 kilos so really it's not that heavy for a Defender is it with a V8 price wise well because the amount of work done to this car it is rather expensive and rather exclusive they start from 225 000 pounds now moving on to that other rather cold looking Defender because it hasn't got a roof let's speak to its owner and creator Mr Richard Morgan so Mr Richard Morgan tell me about your vehicle it's cold very cold that's what my vehicle is look at the union palatial luxury they are very very much heated although I can't seem to figure out how to turn the heating on for the ventilation system so I've still got water vapor coming out of my mouth it's still chilly in here all right I'm going to quickly go over the stats of my car so we can get this race going because I'm freezing basically what I've done on this is I've put a last performance Tesla Drive Unit mid Mount it's about 675 newton meters of torque 500 odd horsepower I have no idea on the performance stats I guess we're about to find out how heavy is that thing it's about 1900 kilos so it's a touch heavier than a standard 90 but not by much yeah it's pretty much the same way as this which sort of brings me on to the new Defender because like this one it's got a V8 however it weighs in at 2471 kilos so it's a bit of a lard ass still it has got good performance under the Bonnet it has a 5 liter Supercharged V8 with 525 horsepower and 625 newton meters of torque it's got an 8-speed automatic gearbox no launch control but it probably won't need it's got loads of traction from its four-wheel drive system and if you want to buy one of 13.4 seconds the iconic and electric Defender actually both finished bang on the same 13.6 seconds with nothing between them okay now we're gonna have a rolling Racing for 30 miles an hour I'm going to call it in three two one go kick down so you can get to the half off first Richard is off of course now we're going come on come on passive this is the quarter mile coming past now we've got this massive gaps here oh this is scary this got very noise in here hey do you know do you know what Sam at those high speeds you can tell the fit and finish of this generation of Land Rover Defenders nowhere near as good as one you've got because the door's starting to like flap around it's like it's like it's open but it's not there in that car bless you this was very civilized though so I'm quite comfortable how are you feeling there Richard I can't believe Matt is complaining about little flappy doors I've not even got doors Matt I saw you wiping the tears from your eye was that because you're so disappointed that you got absolutely destroyed is it just because of the windows in your face my eyes are leaking because they're so cold okay then so we did that to the half mile and you lost would you like to choose this next race what we do from what speed and how far we do it over I reckon from say 30 miles an hour to the quarter mile okay okay all right and you can call it NRI if it's got bigger breaks it was really close with the electric car and they were just at the end it pulled up a little bit a little bit Yeah I locked up at the end so uh I think the ABS and computers and stuff whatever on that definitely helps and those massive huge calipers I can see from here I'm quite surprised how much better you did than me though Richard how come regener breaking baby Regen to break in it's the electric motors help the standard brakes on this so it's like turbo charging your brakes with an electric motor yeah I guess I mean this has got six piston calipers but I was just a little bit too kind of enthusiastic and just locked up as you probably saw do you see me snaking yeah I think you win the dramatic competition there you definitely got a dramatic break on you should
