Google TV Honeycomb Update - Review Part 1

**Browsing with Google TV: A Hands-On Experience**

As I navigated through the menus and features of Google TV, I found myself feeling like I was on Amazon. The service is so integrated with its own ecosystem that it feels almost like using an Amazon machine. This sentiment is reinforced by the fact that you can rent movies and TV shows directly through the service, making it feel more like a one-stop shop than a traditional streaming platform.

**Searching for Content**

One of the standout features of Google TV is its search functionality. With just a few clicks, I was able to find content from my favorite streaming services, including Netflix and YouTube. The search bar is located at the bottom of the screen, making it easy to access whenever you need to find something specific. I could also search for content on the web using the built-in browser, which is surprisingly fast and responsive.

**The Power of Voice Search**

Google TV also incorporates voice search capabilities, allowing me to ask questions like "What's on Netflix?" or "How do I rent a movie?" without having to physically interact with the remote. The voice assistant is cleverly integrated into the interface, making it feel seamless and intuitive. I even caught myself doing a little dance while waiting for content to load – my reflection was visible in the screen, which was a fun Easter egg.

**Watching Yo Gabba Gabba!**

As I explored the features of Google TV, I stumbled upon an episode of Yo Gabba Gabba!, a popular children's show. With just a few clicks, I launched the app and began watching the episode immediately. The interface is clean and easy to navigate, making it simple to find content from various streaming services.

**Cloud and Storage**

Google TV also includes cloud storage capabilities, allowing users to store their favorite shows and movies in the cloud for easy access. This feature is particularly useful for those who want to watch content on multiple devices without having to download it each time.

**Rented Content: A Test of Google TV's Ecosystem**

To test the limits of Google TV's ecosystem, I decided to rent a movie using Amazon Prime Video. The process was smooth and seamless, with no issues or glitches encountered during playback. This suggests that Google TV is well-integrated with its own streaming services, making it easy to navigate and find content.

**YouTube Integration**

Google TV also includes integration with YouTube, allowing users to launch the app directly from the remote. I was able to search for specific videos on YouTube using the built-in search bar, which was surprisingly fast and responsive. This feature is a nice addition to the service, making it easy to access a vast library of user-generated content.

**Chrome Browser Integration**

One of the most impressive features of Google TV is its integration with the Chrome browser. With just a few clicks, I launched the Chrome browser and began browsing the web in full 1080p. The performance was smooth and responsive, making it feel like a traditional browser experience.

**Full 1080p Playback: A Treat for the Eyes**

As I continued to browse through Google TV, I found myself wishing that all content would be available in full 1080p. However, this feature is currently limited, with some titles not available in high definition. Nevertheless, when it is available, it's a treat for the eyes – the video quality is crisp and clear, making it feel like a premium streaming experience.

**Waiting for Content: The Waiting Dance**

As I waited for content to load, I found myself doing the waiting dance – a little jig that I couldn't help but bust out. My reflection was visible in the screen, which was a fun Easter egg. It's moments like these that remind me of the importance of user experience and design.

**A Close Look at the Browser**

As I delved deeper into Google TV, I decided to take a closer look at the browser. The interface is clean and intuitive, making it easy to navigate and find content online. However, I did notice that the browser can be a bit slow to load certain content – this may be due to the need for ad tags and other interactive elements.

**Technobuffalo Review: A Look Back**

To wrap up my experience with Google TV, I decided to check out a review from Technobuffalo. The reviewer provided a detailed look at the browser's performance, highlighting its strengths and weaknesses. While the browser can be slow to load content, it's overall performance is smooth and responsive – making it a great addition to the service.

**The Performance of Google TV: A Mixed Bag**

As I continued to use Google TV, I found that the performance was a mixed bag. On one hand, the interface is clean and intuitive, making it easy to navigate and find content. On the other hand, certain features – such as cloud storage and ad-supported content – can be slow to load or lag behind.

**Conclusion**

Google TV is a powerful streaming service that offers a seamless and intuitive user experience. With its robust search functionality, voice assistant, and integration with various streaming services, it's easy to see why this service has become so popular. While there are some limitations and areas for improvement, Google TV remains one of the top streaming services on the market – offering something for everyone in terms of content and features.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey what is going on everybody I'm Noah from technobuffalo.com and this is the Sony internet TV with Google the 46 in version and I am here to show you the new version of Google TV Sony was kind enough to send me this TV as a loaner there I am in the reflection what's up I'm the guy behind the tripod happy holidays whatever you celebrate whatever you don't happy holidays um I'm in my living room you can see behind me the curtains and that you don't care about that stuff all right fine um son was kind enough to lend me one of these 46in TVs uh ID played with Google TV when it first came out about a year ago in late 2010 and now uh the honeycomb based update is out there's a written review I did over on TechnoBuffalo but we figured you know like we do on TechnoBuffalo we'd take you through a uh a video review all in all it's a nice update but it's still kind of uh at this point Google TV is kind of more of a glorified YouTube and Netflix machine um than anything else you may know that um Logitech has announced that they're discontinuing support of Google TV at least for now they've called uh the review which was their Google TV set toop box they put out last year they've called it a $100 million mistake so you know um Sony right now in it all by themselves although although um not a good sign when you're on TV and the app won't launch uh although there have been rumors that LG possibly some other companies uh going to be joining the Google TV Fray very soon but in the meantime uh kind of the two big things about the new honeycomb based update are the Revan revamped user interface and this the Android market you've got apps now on Google TV and um you can see here uh Sony has kind of customized the market here with the Sony Select there's some apps that are U chosen by Sony kind of uh you know curated if you what have you but it's the Android market with TV compatible apps um Google music now available on Google TV you got these featured apps up on top cooking school Wall Street Journal Scrabble or looks like Scrabble scramble I guess AOL HD etc etc uh basically you know a lot of cues here a lot of styling cues from honeycomb so if you're used to using honeycomb or a phone or a tablet uh this will look familiar the remote for those of you who aren't familiar it's this monstrous um Cordy enabled remote looks kind of like a PlayStation controller uh with cordi on it but in beige you've got these dual uh d-pads up here this one is actually an optical trackpad you can see uh the mouse moving around so when you hit the home button you get that little tray on the bottom uh with apps you know links to all apps notific ifications and then your commonly used apps um so before we go to the App Store let's go TV and movies is is kind of the the featured app here because this takes you to all of the TV and movie content um that not all but you know it tries to curate as much of it as possible kind of the featured content some of the other stuff you can filter here and you see I'm a chief gate so I have it filtered by free price and all quality uh but basically this will tap in I go to all here this will tap into paid services so uh let's go to community community even put on hats I understand so if I go to uh over here to season 3 the current season and I click and I see the episodes that are available uh if I click on this one I can buy it from amazon.com so I'll hit view details and take a second and it'll load up the Chrome browser I'm connected here via Wi-Fi uh this set has both wired and wireless connections on ethernet and Wi-Fi I'm connected via Wi-Fi and so you can see um over here on the right if you follow the cursor I can buy this episode for $1.99 or I can buy a pass for it now if I go back and I check the free and available now I'm not going to get any from this season none at all all right let's go back let's find something that is available for free so you've got Amazon um you've got uh some other try to find another uh place to buy episodes from just to show you Modern Family that's also on Amazon yeah we're just going to see Amazon Sons of Anarchy where can I buy this Amazon so mostly through Amazon uh you also get you're not going to get it obviously with um with the current season stuff but let's go back a little bit and so if we look at uh Yo Gaba Gaba here available on Netflix so this set is connected to our Netflix account so I can watch uh this episode of Yo Gaba Gaba immediately or I could buy it on Amazon so if I click watch instantly it'll launch Netflix there I'm in the background the reflection see I'm still here I'm with you for the whole video I'm not going anywhere I guess I could dance around while this is loading and you can see my reflection dance it's probably better than actually watching me dance so there you go if I go to Yo Gaba Gaba um I can I mean I go to the Netflix version rather it takes me to the Netflix app and I can hit play and it'll load up if you have a compatible Netflix account which you have to pay for separately so like I said you know it's a it's a great the Netflix interface is really pretty nice um we actually we don't need to watch Yo Gaba Gaba go back now I can also hit the search button and I can search for something so let's search for the uh Bill Murray classic meatballs and we'll go to all TV movie and video results now it's a little weird because sometimes you know I think that it's going to the TV app but then it looks like it was going to the Chrome browser but actually it is the TV app so I don't know uh but here Google TV this is one of the uh the best features I think of the service which is not only that app but also anytime you hit the space bar or the uh magnifying glass button rather the search button on the remote next to the space bar you can search and you can search the web but you can just search for TV and video results so don't have Bill Murray and meatballs there it is so that's on YouTube um but up here we've got cloud with the chance of meatballs meatballs part two not does not live up to the uh to its predecessor that's for sure we go rent again Amazon it's basically an Amazon machine I said it was a Netflix and YouTube machine that's just because I don't rent stuff through Amazon but uh it's really an Amazon machine let's go uh on YouTube so it'll launch you can launch it using Chrome or YouTube we'll launch the YouTube app and you see up in the corner there type to search so I can just start typing right now search for a different video but instead we're going to wait for it to load do the waiting dance do the waiting dance gonna dig it gonna dig it I was watching y Gaba Gaba the other day with a friend of mine has a has a three-year-old and uh they did a dance it was the dog and they they had to do digging well you can't see me now in the reflection but it was funny trust me so I can go through and I can watch all right so I can go and I can watch other YouTube videos do all that good stuff um and then I can go back and search the web at large for meatballs and now it fires up the Chrome browser so you've got a full Chrome browser in here and and I go up to the URL bar and I can type in TechnoBuffalo and I can load up technobuffalo.com don't cheat on Modern Warfare don't cheat on anything really but don't cheat at Modern Warfare so uh I'll scroll up to the top here and you see the performance a little bit Pokey the browser you know uh let's watch the uh Kindle Touch review see how the inline playback is you can see in the bottom right though basically it's part of why the the performance is a little Pokey is that it's waiting for all of the uh the ad tags and all that kind of stuff the content's ready to go so we can watch in line what's up everyone John rer oh that malifu voice of John ringer can we go full 1080 D we to 1080p TV let's see what happens John rer from techno Buffalo here with a full review for of the Amazon 1080p are lles available this holiday season all right so there's a little look at the browser coming from the YouTube app and things kind of you know flow pretty seamlessly uh less confusing for me to move on this version of Google TV then the first version uh we'll go back to the market here and this is you know like I said the other big thing um besides the revamped uiux on the new Google TV release is the markethey what is going on everybody I'm Noah from technobuffalo.com and this is the Sony internet TV with Google the 46 in version and I
