GIFT IDEA - how we made CONCRETE LOOK LIKE MARBLE

Welcome to DIY Christmas Gift Week! My name is Kelsey, and I'm here with my co-host Becky, also known as the Scigirls. We're excited to share this super simple yet cool tutorial with you today.

We're starting off by saying that it seems like a sad time of year, but we're trying to turn that around by giving each other (and our viewers) some amazing DIY gifts. And what's more exciting than making something from scratch? Today, we're going to show you how to make marbled planters using concrete. We're talking about a game-changing technique that will take your DIY skills to the next level.

So, let's get started! The first step is to gather some containers for our project. Literally, we went dumpster diving to find the perfect shape, but if you can't find anything suitable, don't worry – we also hit up the dollar store and found a great square that will work perfectly. Make sure the container is plastic and not cardboard; if it's cardboard, add a wax lining to ensure it comes away easily from the cement once it's dry.

We need two containers to mix our cement in: one for mixing the cement, and another for scooping the cement. We're also going to use a third container to make the mold. So, we'll be using three containers in total. Now, let's talk about the type of cement we'll be using. From our experience, sand cement dries the nicest and finest, which makes it perfect for this project.

We recommend finding quick-set sand cement if possible. This is because you'll need to wait a few days for it to dry, and having a faster-drying product will make the process less frustrating. If you have a choice when shopping for cement at the hardware store, try to find one that dries in a lighter color. This will make the marbled effect come out even more apparent.

Now, let's talk about mixing our cement. We'll be using a 1:4 ratio of parts of cement and one part of water – this is often referred to as a "peanut butter consistency." Make sure you're not overmixing, as this can make the cement too stiff and difficult to work with.

To make our cement darker, we'll be adding some black fabric powder dye. We've seen these planters before, but we didn't know how people were making them. So, on a whim, we decided to try it out using fabric dye powder, and it worked beautifully in a smaller container! This makes us more cement – the perfect combination.

To tint our cement with black, use a little bit of the dye at a time, mixing it in as you go. We didn't need that much, but starting with a small amount will give you control over how dark you want your color to be. It's also important to work fast before the cement starts to dry – you have about 20 minutes for this step.

Once you've mixed your cement and added any desired color, pour it into your larger mold. This is where the magic happens! The regular cement will flow into the mold, creating a beautiful marbled effect. Finally, add your smaller mold if you want to create a space for something like a candle or plant.

We used a water bottle bottom as our small mold, pushing it in just a little bit to create the perfect shape for a candle or tiny plants. And that's it! We've created two different versions of our marbled concrete planter using this technique. You can add some real plants, faux plants, or even a decorative handle – the possibilities are endless.

We're so excited to share this tutorial with you today, and we hope you'll check out our other DIY projects that are super easy to do and super affordable. If you haven't seen the other videos yet, be sure to go back and watch them now! We've got four more amazing tutorials lined up for you.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhi everyone my name is Kelsey my name is Becky and we're the scigirls and again welcome back to DIY Christmas gift week it seemed so sad so sad but happy because we have one more tutorial for you yes so this one is a super simple one you want around the week off of something easy but also super cool yes so today we're doing marbled planters concrete planters I bet you didn't know that you can make concrete look like a marbled effect we didn't know until recently we were like we have to be out right so let's just get started with how we made this marbled effect into a tiny little planter or candle holder or whatever you want so the first step is to get some containers to use for this literally we went dumpster diving but if you can't find the right shape we also went to the dollar store and grab the perfect square for us yes just make sure is something that's plastic and not cardboard I mean if this cardboard make sure it's wax lined something that will easily come away from the cement when it's done you'll need two containers to mix the cement in one to scoop the cement and two to make the mold so we're gonna mix a large batch of quick-set sand cement so from our experience sand cement dries the nicest and finest and quick set which is really great because you'll have to wait like days for it to dry and if you have a choice when you go to your hardware store a try and find cement that dries in a lighter color this will make the marbled effect come out a lot more apparent mix a one to four ratio so for parts of cement and one part of water we're going for a peanut butter consistency so to call it a cement to make it a little bit darker we're going to be adding some black fabric powder dye so we totally saw these planters and we knew that they were DIY Bowl but we didn't know how people did them so we just on a whim try this out using the fabric dye powder and it worked in a smaller container makes them more cement and add some black powder fabric dye into the cement to tint it to black use a little bit kind of mix it in as you go because you don't want to make it to black we honestly didn't need that much and we started out with it a little bit watery because I think that helps the black come through so maybe start out with your scent a little bit watery than you would normally and then add cement in to make it less laterally and make sure you work very fast before the cement starts to dry you have about 20 minutes max for your little batch of black cement into the regular cement and mix it only a little bit we don't want to blend this too much so that we lose the marbled effect pour this new mix into your larger mold and it should look like a marble texture when you pour it in and then we're going to add in our smaller mold if you want to have a space for something like a candle or a plant make sure to do that now we're using a water bottle bottom and only pushing it in a little bit this will create the perfect shape for a candle or tiny little plants so here's two different ways that we styled it we can use some real plants or faux plants or you could add a little peak handle in it you can also use this marble concrete effect for lots of other concrete DIY projects we have done a couple in the past that we will link below check out if you have any brilliant ideas on what to make with cement to splash concrete please let us know below yeah what would you marble fi alright thank you guys so much for checking out this DIY tutorial and DIY week if you guys haven't seen the other
