The Funky Joint: A Hidden Gem in Palm Springs
As I sat in an alley right behind the intersection of East and South Palm Canyon, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and curiosity. My buddy had told me that this was a place I needed to check out, and I was eager to see what all the fuss was about. "It's funky," he said with a smile. "You'll find it right here." I nodded in agreement, and my friend replied, "Well, I got a funky joint for you." I laughed and asked, "I don't really like Crepes. What if they're not sweet?" My friend chuckled and assured me that they were savory crepes, different from what I would expect from a traditional sweet crepe.
That's when I heard the name of the restaurant: Gabino's Crepery. I had to know more about this place, so I asked my friend to take me there. As we approached the establishment, I noticed that it was tucked away in a small alley, with a tiny partial door window that served as the entrance. The exterior looked almost like a hole in the wall, but my friend assured me that this was just the beginning of an incredible dining experience.
Upon entering the restaurant, I was greeted by the owner, Marcel Ramirez. He had a warm smile and a passion for his craft that was evident from the start. Marcel told me about how he discovered his love for Crepes at a young age, when his dad would take him to the kitchen and teach him how to whip up batter. This experience sparked something in Marcel, and he began experimenting with different flavors and ingredients. He created non-traditional savory crepes that were unlike anything I had ever tasted before.
I was skeptical at first, but my friend Mark Tadro assured me that these Crepes were the real deal. As we ordered our food, I noticed that the menu was quite unique. We opted for a Philly cheesesteak crepe, which consisted of tender beef, caramelized onions, processed cheese, and a hint of creaminess from the "mama G" sauce. The combination was like nothing I had ever experienced before – it was as if the flavors were singing in harmony.
The chef at Gabino's Crepery is none other than Mark Tadro, who works with the Date Farm in Palm Springs. He explained that the process of creating these crepes involves partially freezing and then slicing the ribeye paper thin, before adding cheese sauce made from processed cheese, whole milk, salt, pepper, garlic, and grilled onions. The result was a culinary masterpiece that left me speechless.
As we enjoyed our meal, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this hidden gem in Palm Springs. The service was exceptional, with Marcel and his team providing outstanding hospitality and ensuring that every guest felt like part of the family. It was clear that Marcel's passion for Crepes had changed his life, and it was inspiring to see someone find their calling in such a unique way.
The ambiance of Gabino's Crepery was equally impressive. The restaurant had a cozy, intimate feel, with dim lighting and comfortable seating that made you want to linger over your meal. It was clear that Marcel had put thought into every detail, from the decor to the music playing in the background.
As I left the restaurant, I couldn't help but think about the experience I had just had. Gabino's Crepery was more than just a place to eat – it was a journey of discovery and delight. The food was unlike anything I had ever tasted before, and the service and ambiance were top-notch. If you're looking for a unique dining experience in Palm Springs, look no further than Gabino's Crepery.
