It's Tuesday, August 22nd, and We Hope You Had a Chance to See the Amazing Eclipse Yesterday
We hope you had a chance to witness the incredible eclipse that occurred yesterday, but if not, don't worry – there's more exciting news on the horizon. A major solar eclipse is just seven short years away, and it will be visible across a significant portion of the US and Mexico. Now is the perfect time to start planning your trip and experience this breathtaking event.
Lots Going On in Tech Today
Today is also a big day for tech news, with Verizon making some significant changes to their unlimited cellular data plan. The new plan consists of two main options: the Go Unlimited Plan and the Beyond Unlimited Plan. While both plans sound promising at first glance, they come with several limitations that might make you question whether they're truly "unlimited" after all.
The Go Unlimited Plan Restricts Video Playback
The basic unlimited plan, known as the Go Unlimited Plan, is a bit of a disappointment. For just $75 a month, users will be restricted to 480p video playback on their phones and 720p on tablets. That's not exactly what one would expect from an "unlimited" data plan. Additionally, Verizon has the power to throttle your data stream at any time, which means you might experience slower speeds or even complete loss of service.
The Beyond Unlimited Plan Isn't Much Better
Things don't get much better with the Beyond Unlimited Plan, which costs $80 a month – just five more than the Go Unlimited Plan. This plan bumps up video playback to 720p on phones, but that's about it. There's no Netflix or Amazon Prime Video streaming in HD, and users won't be able to enjoy their favorite TV shows or movies without interruptions.
A Great Business Plan?
Apparently, giving people actual unlimited data isn't a great business plan. It seems like Verizon is more interested in making money than providing users with the service they pay for. When Apple deleted the headphone jack from the iPhone, many people thought it was just a clever marketing ploy to push wireless headphones from Apple-owned brands. Fast forward to today, and it looks like Google might be following suit.
Google Working on Smart Headphones?
Nine-to-five, a tech news website, has discovered reference to a product codenamed "Visto" that appears to be a wireless headset with built-in Google Assistant technology. According to the report, the headphones will be able to vocalize notifications and respond to voice commands – a feature that would be pretty cool. However, no design information was available at the time of writing, and it's unclear whether Google will actually produce the headphones.
A Vintage VW Fan's Dream Come True
For all you vintage VW fans out there, great news is in store. Volkswagen has recently unveiled their ID.Buzz microbus concept car, and Red Dub says they're going to put it into production with a release date of 2022. The new microbus will be a full-on electric vehicle, featuring a relatively long wheelbase that means plenty of room for battery storage – resulting in decent range and power, potentially up to 300 horsepower.
Assisted Driving Tech and Foldaway Steering Wheel
One of the most exciting features of the ID.Buzz is its assisted driving tech. The concept model showcased a foldaway steering wheel for autonomous driving, which might not make it into production just yet. However, the overall design and functionality of the microbus seem to be exactly what VW fans have been waiting for.
Name Change Needed?
Let's hear from you – what would you like VW to call their new microbus? The ID.Buzz is certainly a catchy name, but perhaps something more straightforward would be in order. With so many great features and specs on board, this electric microbus has the potential to revolutionize the automotive industry.
