Mail Time: A Celebration of Photography and Community
Once in a while, just his practice and Nic did a wonderful job with this - the prints are gorgeous, the book is awesome. Nick thanks for sending these that is some nice handwriting so this note, some prints, and this little book to come to us from Stephen Dorff who is a veteran of photo assignments and he writes in here as I'm sure you are aware the EU has established cities of refugee camps along its perimeter in response to the European migrant crisis of 2015. I was a volunteer at one camp in northern Greece between 2017 and 2018, some people had been living in the camp for over a year waiting on the process that seemed content to ignore them. I wanted to document the camp as an environment of frustration but also show the life of the community.
Some people have been focusing on photography relating to refugees focuses on images that are pretty shocking, well that certainly is true for many people it forgets their kindness and resilience because you don't know Stephen thanks for sharing these with everybody they look beautiful and I think you're right, I mean it's so easy, I think for photographers and really anything in our age of social media to go after images that are attention-getting sometimes shocking and to just ignore like the beautiful side of life just becomes more rare and I really appreciate you doing this these are wonderful thank you got two Z's here that come to us from Elijah and Jake dear Ted I sent you issue zero of stem magazine earlier this year, here are the realized forms of issues one and two we are very excited to have created this publication and can't wait to see what it becomes submissions for issue three will be open on June 1st.
He has a link here I'll link up to this and everybody else in the show description so if you see something you like, you can go check out the artists that have sent these and express your appreciation Lisha and Jake looking good a little envelope here oh when you see this you know it's gonna be good note earlier this is my buddy Tom Barr who is a veteran of mail time he has sent me stuff on several occasions in fact I'll link one up here. He did a really cool project, I'm having focus issues today he did a really cool project a couple years ago called Shetland wool which was a book that he provided the photographs for and I think it was one of the coolest things I've had on mail time to this day and I linked it in that video but this is very cool small set of prints and a description and he wrote me a note too, which says dear Ted I hope all is well with you in sunny Texas, it is sunny and hot I have been enjoying your recent shows about Saenz the importance of printing and seeing all the cool work your viewers have been sending to you so to this point I thought you might be interested to see the latest installment in my ears eenz project. This is very cool.
Earlier for is a mini postcard portfolio inspired by George McKay Brown's poem Beachcomber, Beachcomber first published in 1971, is typical using his familiar 7 motif the elements mortality in the passing of time are told in the objects the Beachcomber finds over the course of a week on Thursday our Beachcomber gets nothing except a seaweed, a whale bone wet feet and a loud Koff. Beachcomber speaks to me about looking closely at the ordinary things in places that we find ourselves an idea I find stimulating as a photographer so for this collection I took Brown's looking closely ethos as a creative prompt deriving inspiration from the ostensibly uninspiring and reading the stories of objects that I encountered whilst ravaging or wandering along the Hebridean breaches taken together these images ask the question as photographers if we look closely do we ever get nothing? P.S. I brew my own beer, do you have any tips to improve its performance as a film developer?
Thank you for sending these, these are amazing I'm gonna link up to Tom's website go show him some love and support I think Tom is a brilliant photographer and obviously he's a veteran of mailtime several times over now go check him out. This is a book that comes from the UK this is from Ryan who is a publisher it says this is just a little gift to say thank you for all your insightful and entertaining content this is our second publication and Ian Howorth who's the artist is his first book, Ivan close to leaf which would explain the book we hope that you like it and thanks again from your friend in the UK best Ryan.
This book not only contains beautiful work but it is beautifully printed I will link up to this as well as everybody else in the show description and one thank you guys because like Fridays are amazing because I get to show amazing work and I get to make a huge mess in the studio that now I have to go clean up so until the next video see you guys then later.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enonce again it is Friday which means it's time to review your work stuff that people have sinned in let's get to business so right out of the gate I am excited to see this this created with care in Brooklyn this little pouch that this thing comes in this is done by our show sponsor who are the awesome folks over at adorama pix and this it's pretty cool this is a photo book that comes to us from Evan Douglas called little by little one travels far dear Ted I have watched the art of photography for a long time and it has really pushed me to make a conscious effort to improve my own work many of the photos in this book were taken after one of your videos explaining different concepts this print was my first attempt using leading lines see if you can spot my favorite technique you taught me some framing thank you for everything you do pushing me to publish my own work Thank You Evan Douglas Evan thank you for the print and the book these look beautiful and I'm glad you're getting something out of the videos I kind of want to revisit some of the composition videos a lot of those are getting really old now you guys drop me a comment if that's something you'd like to see I think it would be cool to do updated versions of those anyway his work looks really nice and I do want to give a shout out because they sponsor the show and they make all this possible but he got these done and adoramapix you probably already know that editing your images isn't the last step in the process you want to get them printed and adoramapix offers an excellent service delivering beautiful prints and photo books just upload your image files you control the output quality and finished product on an absolutely gorgeous selection of paper types prints are way to separate you as a great photographer by going the extra mile and using photo books to WoW clients you can even expand the services that you can charge foreign prints always look better than images on a screen so check out adoramapix and see how beautiful your images can look use the offer code Ted 15 off at checkout and I can save you an additional 15% on your entire order once again that offer code is Ted 15 off and I want to thank the folks at adoramapix for sponsoring another episode of the art of photography so next up is another piece of the puzzle here this is a big mystery I have two different individuals that send me postcards they're never signed they're very mysterious and actually the guys at the post office love it because they go check my box and they're like more of the series and they kind of slide them over to me was just very cool anyway one of these individuals who does one of the series I have showed work before I usually wait a couple months to leave start to kind of build up to show a bunch of them at one time very mysterious these are just stamped I ntj photo and all I know is it's somebody from Phoenix that's all I see on the back and I really need to look up what INTJ is I know it's a thing but anyway there's another little piece of the clue because the return address on this said Steve so Steve thanks for the book need to show another series of these I'll do that next Friday but INTJ photo aka Steve thanks for the book it looks great some prints if you can tell from the video but this is a metallic finished paper very cool these look gorgeous it's a night scene that reflection makes it really difficult to pick up on video so these prints and this zine come to us from Nick Hinnant who writes in here this is my first scene and is the result of a challenge to shoot only film for the month of March as a wildlife photographer this was no easy task in the world of crop sensors high frame rate and high resolution but I wanted to take a step back from that and I believe this project has made me a little bit better because of it that is very cool these were all shot on a Canon T 90 with films ranging from ISO 50 to 3200 but mostly try X and includes some extra prints for you as a thank you for just making great content yourself enjoy make this is a really cool idea and the project turned out great I absolutely love this and what I love about it is you know in here he says he took this as a challenge to just shoot film for a month and I think this is interesting because I mean it's a it's no secret that I do a lot of photography reviews I have a wide range of content that I produce here and you know for me the last nine months or so have been like no other time I've seen in my life as a photographer I mean I think the closest thing you might be able to compare it to is maybe in the 80s when autofocus became a thing but this is even crazier than that with mirrorless technology we have more megapixels more resolution than we've ever had we have autofocus options we've never had and there comes a point where I wonder if it's not diminishing returns I'd do this weekly podcast with my friend Sharon Schneider and we talked about this in the show last week I'll link this below if you are not aware of the podcast but the title of the show was do you really need that and it comes down to you know all these automated things that a camera does are really cool but in the end like what is the return that we get as photographers because I think a lot of these things make it really easy to just become lazy in certain aspects so it's interesting to me that going back and shooting film and slowing that process down I think that's a good thing that every photographer should just do once in a while just his practice and Nic did a wonderful job with this the prints are gorgeous the book is awesome Nick thanks for sending these that is some nice handwriting so this note some prints and this
