NEW CarPlay Features, Tips, Apps (iOS 13)

Apple Maps Update: A Game-Changer for Navigation

The latest update to Apple's mapping service has brought about a plethora of exciting new features that are set to revolutionize the way we navigate our surroundings. One of the most significant additions is the ability to share estimated time of arrival (ETA) with friends and family, making it easier to coordinate plans and ensure everyone arrives on time. This feature is particularly useful for those who frequently use Apple Maps to plan their daily commutes or road trips.

Another notable update is the introduction of better turn-by-turn directions. Gone are the days of cryptic instructions like "turn left in 1,000 feet." Instead, Apple Maps will now provide more straightforward and actionable guidance, such as simply turning left at the next traffic light. This change should make navigating significantly easier and less frustrating for users.

The update also brings a number of new search options that are designed to be faster and more intuitive. One of these features allows users to type in their search queries using the keyboard, rather than relying on Siri's sometimes imperfect understanding of spoken language. Additionally, users can now easily search for nearby businesses and services from within the Maps interface.

Apple Maps has also introduced a new system for organizing favorite locations, making it easier for users to access and navigate to frequently visited places. Whether you're planning a trip or simply want to keep track of your favorite spots in a big city, this feature is set to become an essential tool in your navigation arsenal.

Another clever update to Apple Maps is the ability to mute Siri while navigating. This might seem like a minor convenience, but it's a feature that can be a lifesaver in situations where you need complete silence, such as during meetings or when driving with passengers. By muting Siri, users can enjoy a distraction-free navigation experience without having to worry about interruptions.

The update also brings some aesthetic improvements to the Messages interface on CarPlay. The new design features clean circular icons and a more streamlined layout, making it easier to compose and send messages while driving. This is just one of several ways in which the Apple Maps update aims to enhance the overall user experience, making it feel like a major upgrade.

One of the most impressive aspects of the update is its focus on visual clarity and ease of use. The new interface is designed to be more intuitive and user-friendly, with clear typography and design choices that make navigating a breeze. Whether you're using Apple Maps in CarPlay or on your iPhone, this update should feel like a breath of fresh air.

In conclusion, the latest update to Apple Maps represents a significant leap forward for navigation technology. With its new features, improved user experience, and focus on visual clarity, it's set to become an essential tool for anyone who uses their iPhone or iPad to navigate their surroundings. Whether you're planning a trip, commuting daily, or simply want to explore your local area, Apple Maps is now more powerful and intuitive than ever.

For those looking to take their navigation experience to the next level, there are also some great accessories available that can enhance your Apple Maps experience. From premium cases like the ESR Axiom Clear Case for iPhone 10R, which offers scratch-resistant and shock-absorbent protection, to clever accessories that make navigating easier and more convenient, there's something on offer for every user.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enthis video is brought to you by the ESR axiom clear case for iPhone which is 15% off using the code in the description hey it's Chris and welcome to my second ever carplay video I made the first one not that long ago but that was when it was powered by iOS 12 now with iOS 13 there's some big changes these are like the first big changes we've seen in about four years so in this video just to kind of set your expectations I'm gonna be telling you about the new features and what I think about them so kind of a review but I'm also gonna pepper in sprinkle in some tips and we let you know about some new apps that you can now use with carplay so there's lots of stuff to absorb and take in and like about this video and let me just tell you guys really quick we just launched two new channels daily tech channels so there's this channel the main channel and now we've got a daily tech after party channel for our podcast it's a visual podcast you can watch it or you can subscribe as a podcast and then we have a new clips channel so all the best clips from this the main channel and the podcast clips are all gonna live on that clips Channel some people have already been subscribing cuz we kind of announced it under the radar and this is your chance the first big chance to get in before there are even a thousand subscribers on either channel so check it out I'll link them up down in the description just as kind of a preface though to getting into this video kind of say I love carplay it's one of my favorite things that Apple makes and it's not like as flashy as an Apple watch or an iPad or a Mac or something but yet it's something that I use and like to use and kind of rely on every single day carplay so it's really underrated and I feel like it needs some more attention and so that's why I really wanted to make this video and get you guys excited about it too seriously like if my car didn't have car play and I didn't have it until like a year ago not even a year ago I would like it about 50% less that's how big video carplay have really has become to me well let's start this off with a couple of tips how about that tip number one go check out my last car play video if you haven't it already because it has a lot more tips in this video tip number two there are two cool new apps that I want to tell you about that now have carplay support number one is an app called Libby a library app that lets you rent free audiobooks and you can listen to those on your phone or whatever but now it works with carplay so if you are not having the budget or just don't want to spend money to buy or use something like audible to purchase or rent audiobooks now you can get them for free using Libby which is very awesome so those long trips are about to be less boring for instance or you can cram as some new knowledge on your commute Libby check that out also if you're a Spotify user you're gonna like this Spotify stations now has carplay support and what it is is basically Spotify burgeon their take on Pandora so if you're a Spotify user and you want some kickback radio that you don't have to get really involved in just chooses for you hopefully chooses well then Spotify stations is now here alright let's get into the new features starting with and this is my favorite of everything I kind of have these in order the new dashboard look so it's kind of like the new home screen and basically what it does is gives you some widgets what you can now do and Android Auto kind of had this before but you can look at the map on half of the screen and you can't change these it's just kind of set map on half the screen only Apple Maps for now maybe third parties later and then on the right you can control and see what's playing right now so they're now playing you get the controls for that also above that you're gonna get access to your turn-by-turn directions or maybe your favorites like if you're using the new collections or favorites in Apple maps and I was 13 you're gonna see some of those up here or you might also see some series suggestions which is very cool right there on the home page on the dashboard view so for instance if you're pulling up to your house then maybe series gonna suggest if you have a home kit enabled garage door opener a little link there tap on it open and control your garage door that stuff contextually relevant stuff that's just gonna appear as needed for you on the dashboard view this is amazing now the old home button on carplay has been replaced the one that looked like an actual physical round home button from iPhones past that's gone and so now there's two buttons two icons to kind of switch off one is just gonna go to the app launcher kind of the home screen like you would think the other one which is the same one just click it and it changes tap it and you're gonna see then the dashboard view so you can switch between those and if you hold down that button in whatever view you can still access Siri that way Apple music on the other hand and I just talked about some of my favorite car play apps on the after party so I'll link that particular segment up down below on the clips channel but Apple music one of my favorite most use apps obviously in the car and that's gotten a lot better now too for starters you can now see some album art I mean this is like ridiculous that it didn't exist in the first place I don't know if Apple is trying to make things safer because there was less to concentrate on the screen keep your eyes on the road but album art is here and so you can see it when you're picking out your music and kind of if you recognize things by sight but you don't always know the artists name because that's me sometimes as I'm discovering new music and add it to a playlist like I have a Kris works playlist and when I figure out some new chill music from one of the radio stations I've been checking out then I'll just add it I don't know who the artist is but sometimes I recognize that album art well there you go it's now really easy to sort through and pick stuff out thanks to the album ER and honestly before it felt kind of like something was missing because that album art is part of like the culture of whatever it is that you're listening to you know it's a big part of the music experience actually also new in the updated Apple music app is some dedicated tabs across the top for library for you browse and radio I had to check there so basically it's a lot easier to access recommendations like if you just want something different and maybe you don't want to use Siri but you want to kind of look through and see what there is it's so much easier now it's way way better it's very familiar right basically what you're used to just in a different area on the screen with your Apple music on your iPhone or yeah I bet and there's just some kind of like fun little touches like then now playing icon will either be animated or static depending on whether or not something's playing so just kind of cool it's a little bit more fun to interact with a huge feature absolutely enormous for a lot of people is the fact that you can now use your iPhone separately from carplay and when I say you I really mean your passenger because this has happened to a lot of people you're riding along car plays going you've got your navigation up and the passenger has to check something right everything was always in sync between car play and the iPhone but now the driver can be looking at your navigation and getting those directions and the passenger can't be doing something else and it's not all gonna be messed up and this is awesome should have existed already but Elyse is here now let's talk about Siri and some new Siri features because Siri is a huge part of car play because as you're driving you should limit your interaction with the screen and so Siri kind of helps you do that stay a little bit safer and so that has improved a lot let's talk about it first of all we now have hey Siri support and sorry if I just aggravated everything but you can now say that in the car and it will respond depending on your model but this is a very general thing now it's gonna work with a lot of cars whereas before it took kind of like a hacky setup to get it going maybe now it's gonna work I've tried it it works this is great another big thing with Siri is that it now doesn't cover up the whole interface before in iOS 12 it would just block out the whole screen as soon as Siri was activated it was very annoying because if it was at just the right time then maybe you missed a crucial direction right and then you don't know where to go and you pass it now you added like 20 minutes to your route something else that a lot of people are gonna appreciate is that Siri can now control in iOS 13 other navigation software so if you don't want to use Apple maps even though it's improving a lot and we're gonna talk about it if you would rather use Waze or Google Maps you can now tell Ceri to get you directions to wherever in Google Maps for instance and it will work I mean Google Maps is so much more robust still at this point and ways obviously can give you some stuff that neither of the other apps can give you or even TomTom or anything else that works like maybe where the speed traps have been cited for instance so I definitely understand people wanting to use these other apps and that just got a little bit easier if only you could use a different app for the dashboard view I assume that's coming in the future let's talk about settings next because now we have a Settings icon a Settings app for carplay that you can access in carplay so you don't even have to go through your iPhone to get a few things set up and that's a major improvement for starters you can toggle some stuff when it comes to do not disturb mode and I love this why because sometimes in the previous setup that I had do not disturb on while driving it would think that I was driving when I was on the treadmill like whether my iPhone was in my pocket or whether it was just sitting on the treadmill it would often almost always when I picked it up say are you driving or not and I'd have to get out of that and it was really annoying so what you can do now is have it activate or disconnect that mode when you connect to or disconnect from carplay and that is a major upgrade for me another thing related to do not disturb that you can control in the Settings app now is who gets an auto response so you can set it to everyone or no one or just your favorites for instance and so that's pretty cool because maybe everyone doesn't need to know that you're driving right now right something else that you can change is the display settings or the appearance so I guess I'll just talk about the new light mode now because it makes sense there's a new light mode and this is kind of funny because it's the opposite of every other device has been talking about everybody's been wanting dark mode for the Mac we got it everyone wanted dark mode for the iPhone for iPad 2 and we just got it in iOS 13 and I pad OS well this is the opposite now we always had dark mode now we have light mode in carplay and it's a good thing for certain situations because sometimes it's going to be easier to read the text it's gonna be a little more contrast depending on the light or the time of day or whether you're gonna garage or not and so what you can do is have it always light or always dark or just automatic and it can sense actually where you are I'm not sure that it's even just by the time of day so when I pull into my garage before I'm in the garage it can be light mode and when I get in the garage it will turn dark mode and it's great it really makes a lot of sense one final thing that you can do in the new settings app is mess with the series suggestions if you don't want to see those series suggestions because maybe you want less clutter on that dashboard that's fine you can turn it off I like seeing those there because the smarter the better and this is one way to get a little extra functionality even though you can't customize what really appears just that something appears or doesn't I like it but you can turn it off something else that might seem kind of mundane but that's very cool because it's useful is that we now have a dedicated calendar app an Apple Calendar app right in carplay so why is this cool before you had to actually interact with Siri to see anything about your schedule or the day like Siri what's coming up what's on my schedule for today and now you can actually see with the carplay app what your schedule is now at the same time you're not gonna be sitting here in your car using this app to like plan out a vacation or something like for instance there's not an edit button even so it's very very very simplistic but that's actually a good thing it's more useful than you would think and the reason why is because if you have an event coming up and you've added in the address and maybe the phone number of somebody that you're meeting a contact you can now do two things you can go into that event and get directions tap on it it'll switch over to Apple Maps and you're on your way to your appointment the other thing you can do is just make a call right out of there - if you have that contacts info so this is gonna be very useful for anybody doing anything business-related so Apple Maps is getting some huge updates all across the board on all different devices and that's gonna translate over into carplay it's definitely getting better there we're gonna see more detailed intersections buildings parks so basically more detail in a lot of areas so really playing catch-up to Google Maps honestly in this area but still net overall good thing my favorite new feature out of the new maps update here that you can do right now is share your ETA your estimated time of arrival with one of your contacts something else that we're getting with maps and I could have included this in the series section because it's really a cross over is better turn-by-turn directions so instead of saying I'm gonna butcher this something like in 1,000 feet make a left what Syria will actually do is tell you just turn left at the next traffic light and so obviously this is a lot easier to understand and it's gonna make navigating a lot better so in maps in card play we now have a few more ways to search one of those ways is to use a keyboard because let's face it Siri doesn't always perfectly understand you right and what you can do now is if it doesn't just go in there and type it out which is actually pretty nice because maybe that's just gonna be the fastest thing depending on what situation you're at another thing that you can very easily do now is search for nearby stuff from the maps interface so whether that is a coffee shop or a gas station or whatever you can search for it see what's around find it go to it the other thing you can do in Apple maps across the board whatever the device is is add in your favorites and make some collections I kind of mentioned this earlier but let me go a little bit deeper right now so maybe if you are planning a trip you can make a collection of all the spots that you want to visit and now you can easily access all of those spots and get right into those directions or if you just have some favorites this can be really handy too because maybe you went somewhere and you really liked it but there's so many places that you like in your big huge city that it's hard to remember what they all are well just make a favorites list and there they are right in Apple maps in carplay now here's a really cool tip that I've noticed as you're using this new interface maybe you could do it before I don't know but I found out about it right now is you can mute Siri while you're navigating so if you don't necessarily need the audio the Siri directions you just want to see the visuals for a while maybe you're really deep in a conversation or something you don't want that interruption for like the next half hour some just mute it and then when you're ready to get it back unmute it with the tap pretty cool something else that's kind of a cool new feature is that the messages interface is a lot better a lot cleaner more useful I think now than it was in carplay so this is basically when you're interacting with Siri and you're dictating a message or it's reading you a message that came in there's now some really clean circular icons in the middle there and like I said that new Siri interface doesn't cover up the whole screen you'll just find that if you're using this it's a major upgrade it feels like an upgrade it's kind of hard to explain but when you're using it I think you're gonna like it you already know this carplay update looks great but if you need a new iPhone case that also looks great check out today's sponsor ESR and their axiom clear case for the iPhone 10 R this case is scratch resistant shock absorbent and has a hard PC back and soft TPU frame which offers reinforced drop protection personally I really like the air guard corners which have a unique look and function and the angular design as well which is different than most of the cases I see it's only 15.99 with free shipping on Amazon and you can save 15% using the code down in the description from now until October 1st so just wrap things up I mean this is a big update even though I know some of the stuff seems kind of mundane but once you get in there and you start using it especially if you've used carplay before then your jaw is gonna drop cuz this is how it should have been always and you're really gonna like it now if you want to like it even more we've got some great accessories that you can access using the link down below and that's over on my sliced Apple comm if you've never checked it out before also don't forget to check out our new channels daily check after party our podcast it's visual you can watch it throw it on in the background while you're working or if you just want the clips the most interesting segments for you you can check out the clips channel don't forget to follow ad daily tech spell daily te KK on Instagram and Twitter and I'll catch you in the next of saying I'm gonna butcher this something like in 1,000 feet make a left what Syria will actually do is tell you just turn left at the next traffic light and so obviously this is a lot easier to understand and it's gonna make navigating a lot better so in maps in card play we now have a few more ways to search one of those ways is to use a keyboard because let's face it Siri doesn't always perfectly understand you right and what you can do now is if it doesn't just go in there and type it out which is actually pretty nice because maybe that's just gonna be the fastest thing depending on what situation you're at another thing that you can very easily do now is search for nearby stuff from the maps interface so whether that is a coffee shop or a gas station or whatever you can search for it see what's around find it go to it the other thing you can do in Apple maps across the board whatever the device is is add in your favorites and make some collections I kind of mentioned this earlier but let me go a little bit deeper right now so maybe if you are planning a trip you can make a collection of all the spots that you want to visit and now you can easily access all of those spots and get right into those directions or if you just have some favorites this can be really handy too because maybe you went somewhere and you really liked it but there's so many places that you like in your big huge city that it's hard to remember what they all are well just make a favorites list and there they are right in Apple maps in carplay now here's a really cool tip that I've noticed as you're using this new interface maybe you could do it before I don't know but I found out about it right now is you can mute Siri while you're navigating so if you don't necessarily need the audio the Siri directions you just want to see the visuals for a while maybe you're really deep in a conversation or something you don't want that interruption for like the next half hour some just mute it and then when you're ready to get it back unmute it with the tap pretty cool something else that's kind of a cool new feature is that the messages interface is a lot better a lot cleaner more useful I think now than it was in carplay so this is basically when you're interacting with Siri and you're dictating a message or it's reading you a message that came in there's now some really clean circular icons in the middle there and like I said that new Siri interface doesn't cover up the whole screen you'll just find that if you're using this it's a major upgrade it feels like an upgrade it's kind of hard to explain but when you're using it I think you're gonna like it you already know this carplay update looks great but if you need a new iPhone case that also looks great check out today's sponsor ESR and their axiom clear case for the iPhone 10 R this case is scratch resistant shock absorbent and has a hard PC back and soft TPU frame which offers reinforced drop protection personally I really like the air guard corners which have a unique look and function and the angular design as well which is different than most of the cases I see it's only 15.99 with free shipping on Amazon and you can save 15% using the code down in the description from now until October 1st so just wrap things up I mean this is a big update even though I know some of the stuff seems kind of mundane but once you get in there and you start using it especially if you've used carplay before then your jaw is gonna drop cuz this is how it should have been always and you're really gonna like it now if you want to like it even more we've got some great accessories that you can access using the link down below and that's over on my sliced Apple comm if you've never checked it out before also don't forget
