Today on The Stay At Home Chef, I'm excited to share with you my recipe for slow cooker Cuban Moho pork. I fell in love with the flavor of Moho several years ago on a trip to Miami, and the Cuban flavors that have been brought to the States are absolutely divine. In fact, I would love to go on a trip to Cuba someday to experience the authentic flavors firsthand.
To make this recipe, we'll start by making the Moho sauce. This is where the magic happens, and I'm excited to share it with you. The sauce starts with two-thirds of a cup of orange juice - you can use any type of orange juice you like, but I find that using a combination of orange and lemon juice gives the best flavor.
Now, in Cuba, they have a fruit called sour oranges that's a hybrid between oranges and lemons. Unfortunately, these are hard to find anywhere else, so unless you're living in Cuba or Miami, this mixture is a great substitute. If you do have access to sour oranges, you'll want to use one cup of their juice instead of orange juice. Either way, the acidity and sweetness will come together beautifully.
Next, we'll add in a whole head of crushed garlic - yes, an entire head! This may seem like a lot of garlic, but trust me, it's essential to the flavor of this dish. Add in a teaspoon of salt and half a teaspoon of black pepper, and whisk everything together until the sauce is smooth.
Now that we have our Moho sauce ready, let's move on to the next step - preparing the pork shoulder or butt roast. We'll need a three- to five-pound piece of meat for this recipe, which will become tender and shredded after slow cooking. I love using my slow cooker for this type of dish because it allows us to cook at a low temperature for an extended period, which is perfect for breaking down the connective tissues in the meat.
Place the pork shoulder or butt roast into the slow cooker, making sure it's fully submerged in the sauce. If you're feeling fancy, you can also add a sliced onion on top of the meat - this will add just a little bit of flavor, texture, and color to the dish.
Now that our pork is ready to go, we'll put the lid on the slow cooker and cook everything over low heat for eight to ten hours. This may seem like a long time, but trust me, it's worth the wait. After eight hours, remove the lid and use two forks to shred the meat into tender, juicy strands.
The best part about this recipe is that you can serve the shredded pork with some rice and beans or turn it into a delicious Cuban sandwich. The possibilities are endless! And if you want to get really adventurous, you can add some pickles, mustard, and Swiss cheese to create a truly authentic Cuban experience.
