More Reading = Less Favorites _ Book Chat

As I reflect on my reading habits and preferences, I've come to realize that I've become more discerning in my opinions about books over time. In 2014, it seemed like every book I read was automatically deserving of five stars. However, after a significant increase in the number of books I've read, I've found that it's become increasingly difficult for me to give a five-star rating to even my favorite books. It's as if my standards have risen, and I'm now more critical about whether or not a book truly deserves a five-star slot.

I think this shift in my opinion is partly due to the sheer volume of books I've read over the past few years. When you're reading multiple books a week, it can be challenging to maintain the same level of enthusiasm and excitement for every single one of them. As a result, I find myself nitpicking more frequently, looking for areas where a book might not quite live up to my expectations. This has led me to give fewer five-star ratings overall, and instead, I'm opting for higher ratings like four or three stars.

I've also noticed that this trend isn't unique to me alone. In recent years, there's been a growing trend towards more critical reviews on BookTube, where creators share their thoughts on the books they've read. Gone are the days of simply gushing about every book I loved; now, I'm more likely to watch reviews that offer constructive criticism or nuanced opinions. This shift has been incredibly refreshing, as it allows me to engage with a wider range of perspectives and ideas.

One aspect of this trend that's particularly interesting is how it seems to be affecting the BookTube community as a whole. In previous years, I noticed that many creators would focus solely on sharing their favorite books, often without offering much criticism or analysis. However, in recent times, I've seen a significant increase in creators sharing reviews of books they didn't love, or ones that were simply disappointing. This shift towards more critical reviews has been incredibly valuable to me, as it allows me to see multiple sides of the same issue and engage with different perspectives.

I think this trend is also indicative of how our community is maturing as a whole. As we become more critical readers, we're developing a greater appreciation for complexity and nuance in literature. We're no longer content to simply praise every book that comes across our desks; instead, we're seeking out more thoughtful and considered opinions. This shift towards greater critical thinking has been incredibly beneficial, as it allows us to engage with books on a deeper level and appreciate the complexities of storytelling.

Ultimately, I believe that this trend is also reflective of how we're becoming more discerning readers overall. As we read more books, our standards rise, and we become more adept at evaluating the merits of each individual title. This can be challenging, as it means we may not always give five-star ratings to every book we love. However, I believe that this shift towards greater critical thinking is essential for building a healthy and engaged reading community.

For me, personally, it's been incredibly valuable to develop these new standards and critiques. As I've become more discerning in my opinions, I've found that I'm able to appreciate books on a deeper level. I no longer feel the need to automatically give five-star ratings to every book; instead, I take the time to carefully consider whether or not it truly deserves such a high rating.

This shift towards greater critical thinking has also had an impact on my own ratings system. In the past, I would often hand out five-star ratings willy-nilly; however, as I've become more discerning in my opinions, I've found myself giving fewer five-star ratings overall. Instead, I'm opting for higher ratings like four or three stars, which allows me to acknowledge a book's strengths without feeling like I need to give it an automatic five-star rating.

As I look to the future, I'm excited to continue developing my own standards and critiques. As a reader, there's no feeling quite like discovering a book that truly resonates with you – one that speaks to your heart and mind in ways you never thought possible. It's this kind of connection that makes reading so special, and I'm committed to continuing to cultivate a deeper understanding of literature through my reviews and opinions.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey guys it's sam and today i want to do a book chat on having less favorite books the more that you read so that's kind of interesting tile I didn't really know what to call this video but basically this year with my own reading I noticed that for 2015 even though I read a lot more I feel like I had less favorite books or I felt like the favorite books i had i talked about over and over again throughout the year obviously and i was interested to see why that is i feel like the more that I read the more critical I get of things and I'm wondering if that is something that is shared among a lot of us so I started this channel about halfway through 2014 and I read a ton i think i read about like 70 books but i feel like it was very easy to me to pick out my favorite books and they were we're all booked so I feel like I'd over talked and again that's also having you know only half a year instead of a full year to talk about books and stuff like that but I felt like when I was picking out my favorite books 2014 it's really easy for me it was very obvious that i love these books that i was obsessed with them blah blah blah when I was picking up some of the books 4 2015 1 I had a lot of books my favorites that were continuations of series that i read calls in 14 so most feel like those wouldn't count like obviously they do count but i had pre-existing love for them so as far as like new books there were very few that i felt like i loved as much as the books that i love 2014 there are obviously some exceptions obviously where the christian trilogy and six of crows this year and the beautiful storms Ava lavender and some books that are just I'm obsessed with also but I feel like it didn't reach a level that it did in 2014 and I feel like that's because of how much i have read now and that the top books it takes a lot now to be a top book i have way higher standards and i'm not sure if that's true for everybody but i'm kind of thinking it is based on the videos that i saw at the end of the year so this year overwhelmingly so I feel like almost everyone that I subscribe to had disappointing reads of the year videos either they had disappointing reach of the Year videos or they had they're just putting reads mixed in with her favorites but last year I followed pretty much a lot of the same people obviously had some new ones mixed in here because I follow new people throughout the year but I feel like a lot of people the previous year just had favorites videos that's all I talked about no one really talk about disappointing anything like that this year there was disappointing read videos everywhere and it wasn't just through like from like why a fiction or people that only read a certain genre it was the ye people it was the fantasy people it was literary fiction people stuff like that so I think that a lot of people had the same kind of reaction that I do as far as the longer that we're on book to the longer that we're reviewing the longer that were critically reading things the more critical we do become and the harder it is to get to a five-star slot this year I did give a lot more to star in one star reviews and I'm a lot more critical about okay is this a four-star would urge the five shares 24.5 I definitely don't just hand out my five-star books willy-nilly if I'm gonna get up a book five stars I really think about I'm like okay am I just having a gut reaction to the experience or overall is this book truly worth five stars and if a book really disappoints me if I'm skim reading it if I wanted to quit halfway through its getting a one-star or it's gonna get two stars I'm going to like rivet a partner review i'm going to say the things that were wrong with it i feel like the more that i read and the more that I had this channel more than reviewing the more true that will be I can solely see my rating unger drees my average rating going down to a more middle ground which is great because obviously you want to be kind of in the middle and it makes more sense that you have this kind of like bell curve type thing going on with most of your books being in that like three star range because not every book is going to be a five-star book and that's completely fine because if it was my heart would have problems because I can't handle that much love all the time I think it's really indicative of how our entire community really is maturing I feel like in 2014 there was a lot of discussion especially towards the end of the year of being more critical and not just reading books you know from your gut reaction and stuff like that which obviously you could write however you want to write and everybody has different opinions and different ways that they do grade books but it feels like as a community or as the community that i'm watching and I watch a lot of videos obvious I don't want to say all the booktube is like this by this is a compliment so I do want to say that all of booktube is like this that we've become more critical we've become a little more you know stringent about different things we've been like okay I'm not going to hand out a five star every book you know and I'm okay with talking about disappointing reads I love filming and watching disappointing reads videos you know like one star reviews even for some of my favorite books I went and watched a lot of reviews for a brute right if I know my Novick and a lot of people work that book apart I love watching those reviews i love seeing like how people reacted to a book that I loved I'm totally fine with that so I love those kinds of videos I know that there's a lot of like download something I have in those fans videos but i love them i love the unpopular opinions so let me know if you are the same way if the more you read the more that you review or anything like that if you feel like you do get more critical or if you feel like it's the opposite and you feel like you have even more books that are fit your favorites because you have more to choose from comment below and let me know because I honestly feel like the more I read the more critical I get of my five-star reads and the more on a pedestal those five star roots are because they're just a lot more rare the more that I read so comment below let me know how you feel so then go for watching guys youhey guys
