The MacBook Air is Getting a Complete Design Refresh: What to Expect
Despite a recent RAM upgrade, the MacBook Air has been relegated to second-class status in Apple's lineup. However, it looks like the little laptop that once could is about to get a little more attention from the folks at Maca Qatar, who have a history of alpha rumors and questionable validity.
Rumors have been substantiated by Digit Times and Economic Daily News, and all three sources are saying the same thing: the MacBook Air is getting a complete design refresh. One of the most significant changes is the removal of Thunderbolt 2, which means we're no longer going to have that port on our MacBook Airs. Instead, we'll be sticking with USB-C, which will also be compatible with Thunderbolt 3.
This change in the i/o standpoint is a big design shift for Apple, and it's expected to take design cues from the new MacBook Pro lineup. With the introduction of a 15-inch model, it seems like the 13-inch and 11-inch models are being phased out, leaving a question about where the MacBook Air will fit into the lineup.
However, there is one thing we don't know: what's going to happen to the SD card slot that exists on the 13-inch model. Hopefully, it will stick around, as this feature has been a staple of the MacBook Air in the past. Another rumor suggests that the new MacBook Air will be a high-spec machine, meeting 16 gigs of RAM on board and featuring the latest processor from Intel.
The time frame for the release of the new MacBook Air is supposedly June, which coincides with Apple's WWDC event. However, there are reports that Apple might announce it at a different time with a press release, rather than during the event itself. It doesn't make much sense, but fingers crossed that we'll get our hands on this updated laptop soon.
One question remains: why did anyone buy a MacBook Air in the first place? Only Apple knows the answer to this question, and it's clear that they're not trying to cannibalize their own sales with this new model. Instead, it seems like they're just trying to keep up with the demand for laptops that can collaborate effectively.
The new MacBook Air is expected to be a game-changer for those who want to work collaboratively with their team members. With features like JIRA, confluence, and HipChat, it's clear that Apple is targeting professionals who need a reliable laptop to get their job done. But will the lack of a Retina display hold us back? Only time will tell.
For now, we'll just have to wait and see what the new MacBook Air has in store for us. Will it meet our expectations? One thing's for sure: we'll be excited to get our hands on this updated laptop and see how it compares to its predecessors.
