Making Motor Mounts for the K Swapped STI!

The Road to Restoration: A K Series STI's Journey Back to Its Former Glory

As we sit here in the garage, surrounded by the tools of our trade and the remnants of a once-thriving project, it's hard not to feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. We've been working tirelessly for weeks, pouring every ounce of sweat and effort into bringing this K Series STI back from the brink of obscurity. And today, we're finally starting to see the fruits of our labor.

Our plan of attack was to sit on this piece a little flatter but we're pretty much just going to weld this piece on this just like how we normally would like on the other side but I'm gonna sit on it just like that instead and then we'll have two hose clamps holding it down nice and tight. Then, I won't go anywhere cuz then we can take the mount off whenever we need to pull the motor so that we can still actually take the motor out because like I said last night look right here if you would well this one solved like the other side you wouldn't be able to get the motor out at all. Alright, so I just got this piece all finished up got it all cleaned up and ready to go and then we also trim the saddle down and got it hose clamped on that is not going anywhere that is so tight and so now we're just gonna put this piece on just like that.

As we move forward with the project, we've encountered a few challenges along the way. But one of the most significant hurdles has been the need to extend a little shaft that connects to the steering rack. This was necessary because, as it turned out, our original part was too short. We didn't want to compromise on quality, so we had to get creative and find a solution. After some tinkering, we managed to rig up a temporary fix that will hold us over until we can get a proper replacement.

One of the things that's been impressive throughout this project is the level of precision and attention to detail required. We've had to weld and trim various components to ensure a seamless fit and finish. The result is something truly remarkable – a K Series STI with mounts that are virtually indestructible.

The steering rack, in particular, has been a point of focus for us. With the tie rods perfectly level, it's clear that we've put in the work to get everything just so. We're getting close, and I can feel the excitement building up inside me. It won't be long now before this STI is back on the road, ready to take on whatever challenges come its way.

Of course, no project of this magnitude would be complete without a few surprises along the way. As it turns out, our STI is missing one crucial component – a turbocharger. Don't worry; we're not letting that get us down. We'll have that sorted in no time. And once again, I'm reminded just how much work goes into restoring a car like this.

We've made good progress today, but there's still plenty to be done. The wiring needs to be finished up, and some final tweaks will be required before we can say the STI is truly ready to roll. But for now, it's time to take a step back and appreciate what we've accomplished so far.

As I look around the garage, I'm struck by just how much has been achieved in such a short space of time. The saddle mounts are secure, the flywheel clearance is perfect, and the steering rack is perfectly level – all thanks to our tireless efforts. It's moments like these that remind me why we do what we do.

And now, as I prepare to head out for the evening, I'm filled with a sense of anticipation. Tomorrow will bring more work on the hatch, but I know it'll be worth it in the end. The STI is one step closer to being back in action, and that's all that matters right now.

For those wondering about our approach to this project, we can assure you that we've taken a few...unconventional steps. It turns out that some of the most innovative solutions come from thinking outside the box. The key here is to experiment, try new things, and learn from our mistakes. And when all else fails, just remember what my friend with the rear-wheel drive J Series civic told me: "Hose clamps are the way to go."

We'll be continuing this journey in the coming days, and I invite you to join us for every step of the way. With any luck, we'll have our STI back on the track before long – and we can't wait to share it all with you.

As I make my way out of the garage, I'm reminded that sometimes less is more. The mount right here? That's just a temporary solution, but one that has proven its worth. It's not a conventional approach by any means, but hey – when it comes to pro mod and Top Fuel cars, things get pretty wild anyway.

There you have it, folks – the story of our K Series STI's remarkable journey back from the brink of obscurity. Join us next time as we continue this exciting project – and who knows? We might just surprise you with some more unorthodox solutions along the way!

Ebert shoe like a glove that's nice yeah I bought it oh not zoomin and dirty so Emilio just got the ends of the bar all cleaned off and we went ahead and took these two pieces off they were right here because we need to trim them a little shorter so he's cutting those out right now on the bandsaw and then once these are cut we can go ahead and start tacking it up and then from there we can start making the motor mounts get them cut yeah looks good nice now we can go ahead and throw some tacks on there oh yeah she's good this Kyle built solid so dude the second hole building this motor now we just got the sub great thing that we made I'll hold it up so now it makes amounts to come off that flats over they're gonna roll cage we working late tonight yes we got we got TTT over there polishing his turbos we got the cojones we're doing race cards now the corner corner is sample size we got this one plate made right here to make key motor mount out of we just got the holes drilled how to notch it a little bit for these two bolts up here something for the AC went down here it was like a compressor bracket or something like the AC compressor but we're just going off that just using these two holes this gap right here is inch and five-eighths which is the same size of this tubing right here so would be able to weld an engine 5/8 for moly tube from this plate to the bar right here high so we're getting ready to make this first motor mount but before we can do that we have to make sure the motor is exactly where we want it and we did actually have to raise it just a tiny bit because the drive shaft was starting to hit on the bottom of the shifter just barely we were just spinning all the tires on the lift just to hear if there was any binding or anything like that and we're gonna put spacers here yeah we're still going to space this like carry your bearing down some we're gonna space this down we already have it unbolted oh this is like the rear training mount right here and then we're also gonna space this front one as well since we did space these subframe up there we're gonna bring everything down evenly so that no angles get changed but I think she's looking pretty good right there so we just have to figure out the steering rack because right here is the flywheel kinda hard to see but it's poking through and the steering rack we took off but with the steering rack in the factory spot it would definitely hit on the flywheel under here so what we're gonna do is add some little spacers to these mounts right here on the steering rack like I said sorry that's hard to see but we're gonna space this down some to get it to clear the flywheel and we should be all set to go but I think she's looking pretty good right there dude yeah I think I'll just get the motor mounts set right there and then we can get everything else in place once the motors where it needs to be then we'll just get all that figured out get all it spaced out how it needs to be and she should be rocking so guess let's do it so this is the piece I was getting ready to cut out right now I still need to turn it down some I'm gonna make this into a motor mount I have this plate right here that we just showed you guys and I'm going to put this to this plate right here I have a bend on it and then I'm going to notch it and then how'd it go down to that guy right there then that side will be good and then for the other side we're going to have to do sort of like a saddle and a lot of you guys might not know what that is but Todd actually pointed this out got it right you showed us because I was going to make this mount right here solid and then make a pipe go down to this bar but since these holes are a little kind of inset on the motor right here there's this lip and if we ever tried to take the motor out well and get this to focus and if we ever try to take the motor out with off solid mount right here it's just going to catch on this lip right here I think there would be no way to get the motor I would kind of force the motor in the engine bay and just keep it here so what we're gonna have to do is make this mount removable at the bottom and how we're gonna do that is we're gonna take a piece of pipe and cut a notch out of it and it's going to saddle onto this pipe and then we'll use some hose clamps and also probably run a couple bolts through just cuz Amelio wants to be super safe about it but we could just use hose clamps but this one is gonna have to be removable so we can get this mount off if we ever need to pull the motor but that's how we do that side and then this one will be solid and that one can be solid just because this is flush right here so that's not gonna be an issue this will just slide right out of there but yeah that's what we're working with staying up late I was trying to get her done I'm finding water let's go you're driving driving about ass you in the minivan we can all roll it down yeah in the gas station I got another Howard above didn't work and I'm thirsty boy I'm done with groans yeah I draw all tacked up go ahead and hold it all the way around so I will be done right this way we've got the mount on this side all bolted up the motor is suspended just off this one so she's good to go now I just gotta get the other side which we're gonna do tomorrow because like I said it's really late right now it's like what almost 3:00 probably 3 in the morning either been working on this thing all day but I made a lot more progress on her so we just got to get the other motor mount done and then get the steering rack three mounted up and we'll be good to go but we're gonna get out here for the day because we're tired so we'll be back in the morning guys were on our way back right now and the owl is back in the road the baby owl oh can you fly look he can almost fly he can almost fly ding oh boy dude he can almost fly look he's doing good guys he look at him go dude he's getting it he's getting it dude that's so funny we ran into him again watching him grow I'm really happy he's doing good still look at him I try to get a close shot of him hey buddy owls are kind of creepy when they look at you like that honestly it looks like you got to murder you do you like this is just so cool me being so close to now no that's the parents they're up there somewhere they're still watching out for him dang I can't believe we ran into him dude it was meant to be it's like 3:30 in the morning right now come on buddy all right now get one more flight in dude he is so close you got some distance on that oh oh there you go oh yeah dude here's you're gonna be flying by tomorrow well since this is the last time we'll probably see you because by tomorrow I'm sure you'll be flying around I just want to wish you the best day I'm not doing nothing I'm not doing nothing I'll back up got a little too close there but I'm gonna wish you the best you're gonna you're gonna be a good out dude he's scaring me right now though I might move oh yeah those probably be the last time we see him used definitely about to be on his own so we're gonna leave you be he's still doing good though for sure bye buddy I thought he was about to jump on me dude I can't believe we ran into him dude that's so funny all right so it's the next day working on the K STI yesterday we got this motor mount done on this side and right now the motor is up on this spiral jack just because we want it to stay level but this motor mount alone can hold the weight of the whole motor we already tested it out last night not sure if we filmed any of that but right now what I'm working on is getting the other side done so I'm gonna be using these three holes right here I believe the half shaft used to bolt here and I already got a piece of plate cut out it's gonna go right over those guys I just need a way to make a template so I can drill my holes and make sure they're not off because on this side I was able to use the old AC compressor bracket or whatever it was to make a template out of that and I was able to drill my holes perfect so they lined up straight put on this side I need to find a way to blend these up just like with a piece of paper or cardboard or something because we don't have any k-series half-shafts laying around unfortunately once I figure that out though I'm gonna get the holes drilled and then you'll be able to mount this on and then we can start wrapping up the rest of it and then the motor mounts will be ready to go I'm gonna use the three these three or these right here these three one two three so load half cap bolts that will be a cord half cap bolts to the other cap chapter XIII the three old yep our that they're wondering what the grease on your fingers are good for it was wrong with me I still need to clean this up a little bit and get it to sit on this piece a little flatter but we're pretty much just going to weld this piece on this just like how we normally would like on the other side but I'm gonna sit on it just like that instead and then we'll have two hose clamps holding it down nice and tight then I won't go anywhere cuz then we can take the mount off whenever we need to pull the motor so that we can still actually take the motor out because like I said last night look right here if you would well this one solved like the other side you wouldn't be able to get the motor out at all alright so I just got this piece all finished up got it all cleaned up and ready to go and then we also trim the saddle down and got it hose clamped on that is not going anywhere that is so tight and so now we're just gonna put this piece on just like that and then once we can get the Baldr back over here we're gonna get it all welded up and then that side will be ready to go and I'm not done you approve of that idea food yeah that's very only yeah once I tighten that little saddle down that's not gonna go anywhere so we got it bolted back up yeah we just added this plate right here so we could gap it down a little bit and then now check out the flywheel clearance it's great now the flywheel doesn't hit nothing no and it's actually like yeah it's yeah it's good and now look I'll go straight the steering rack here the tie rods are now they're like perfectly level I just have to slowly turn around finishing up the last Mount now tape and go ahead and let her down oh it's not gonna go anywhere look at that dude she's in there BB BB k booster boy Kyle fab there he is motors held up on their sown wait faint came out pretty good oh that's solid for that solid it doesn't even have the rear little what's it called on the back row wishbones yeah check it out Brent yeah he's there I see one problem what's that is it missing a turbo I was like oh what's your problem irony is where she's gonna be all right Wow couple weeks away she's back on the ground and that bar doesn't sit too low at all yeah it's good all right so we got the K STI back to the garage how you feeling man she's almost there almost got the mounts done just got to do some little stuff now we have to extend that little shaft that goes to the steering rack and then we just have to get the wiring finished up get some coolant stuff done on this they said Forester one was longer so I'm gonna go check out this spot tomorrow to see if they have one just to measure it see if he'll reach yeah yeah she's getting there definitely some more work to do we'll see how much we can get done by the end of this week because the goal would still be to try to drive it to the track on Sunday yeah this weekend so Tuesday right now you start like four or five days so we'll see if we can get it going if not my just trailered over there just to let people look at it if anything but she is getting there and if you're noticing right now my hatch is not in its spot because we just dropped the STI off and then we loaded my hatch up on to the trailer and we're gonna be bringing it over to PFI right now so I can start doing the fuel stuff on that tomorrow and yeah but it's gonna be it for tonight I guess I mean got a lot done today so and also for anyone worrying about this mount right here because it's just hose clamped on this is actually like something they do for pro mods and Top Fuel dragsters they literally just have saddle mounts just like that so they can rip the motors out of the cars a lot faster and that guy with the rear wheel drive J Series civic right now he had a K series in that one before he had all his motor mounts just like that and that thing didn't go anywhere and yeah I went nines with mounts like that it's not gonna go anywhere dude it's solid that's like a legit way they do mounts I've never done it so like when I first saw it I thought it was kind of sketched but after you tighten those things down it's not gonna move at all but uh yeah she's in there motor mounts are done probably gonna be a long video of just talking and showing stuff but we had to get it done that's how I was spent a couple days getting her knocked out now she's one step closer so it's gonna be it for tonight guys and I'm gonna get up early and start working on the hatch and guess I'll see you guys then but thanks for watchingwhat's in that box oh no it's pretty heavy though it's went to a post-office it's for the Honda route subscriber coming in clutch I know dude I'm excited shout out to Shane Williams sent me a care package looks like a pretty nice care package is pretty heavy dude wonder what that is you never know maybe send you some flowers Oh big rock so says what's up fellas been following your channel since early early shopping cart days take what you guys do you could read it let me read it yes please take what you guys do live in the dream I've been building cars as much as I can for almost 20 years Brian I heard you say you would put up your GT 3582 s against Precision's lol I'm thinking a $550 Ford Werner s 360 would kill it anyways I would want to see this condor you killing it on the streets maybe a cash days so I said he wanna keep it real from Shane Williams thank you very much sure we'll put the turbo to good use shows Instagram he set it on here but I can't quite read this last piece here in here my Sola I'm Isola no it's gonna yep here in Missoula is his Instagram so thank you very much let's pull that bad boy out oh and it has the exhaust housing Jana damn that's a nice turbo t4 flange nice dude that will make some power to where it's gonna go we're gonna dude yeah thanks a lot Jane this is I don't even have any words for it appreciate that man yeah dude huge shout out huge shout out to shame Wow sent us a brand new BorgWarner for the ke STI that's freaking awesome dude it's gonna look so good in there dude I just can't believe how much lower we got the motor - look at that it's sitting so nice he's ready for some power that's it that's so sick yeah thanks Shane really really appreciate it man what's going on guys as you just saw we got the motor sitting a lot lower in the K STI right now we're getting ready to load her up on the trailer why it's letting us uses a little tow rig right here we're gonna bring the STI over to PFI so we can get some motor mounts stuff fabbed up will show us some more that once we get over there but uh we're on a little bit of a time crunch so we're gonna get her loaded up and we'll be on our way work gotta grind the corners off a little bit but yeah moons ovens real whole so we're working on a crossmember right now we're gonna try to use this bolt and this bolt hole and it's basically gonna sit right underneath the oil pan and then it's going to bolt to the motor mounts Kyle's over here tabbing them up right now alright so we just got the little droplets me the square piece of 8-inch and long it through the p'malee peeping rounded off open the talk the bar that a little different but this way five but that's the suck way overkill I think we'll all we need and you're talking to Grandpa get up we're gonna get so we went ahead and got these lines off with a car seat back so we're gonna go man.you anyways you're not going to use it it's gonna pull the whole thing out I am weight reduction he's trying to bend up the pipe right now and be nice I'll say like great just eyeballing it so I scoop it's pretty good to me jackster buzz flips it up higher - that's way better yeah we can cut these shorter juices I made these waiting long just in case we wanted like Burt I'm making sure mr. Ebert shoe like a glove that's nice yeah I bought it oh not zoomin and dirty so Emilio just got the ends of the bar all cleaned off and we went ahead and took these two pieces off they were right here the mount off whenever we need to pull the motor so that we can still actually take the motor out because like I said last night look right here if you would well this one solved like the other side you wouldn't be able to get the motor out at all alright so I just got this piece all finished up got it all cleaned up and ready to go and then we also trim the saddle down and got it hose clamped on that is not going anywhere that is so tight and so now we're just gonna put this piece on just like that and then once we can get the Baldr back over here we're gonna get it all welded up and then that side will be ready to go and I'm not done you approve of that idea food yeah that's very only yeah once I tighten that little saddle down that's not gonna go anywhere so we got it bolted back up yeah we just added this plate right here so we could gap it down a little bit and then now check out the flywheel clearance it's great now the flywheel doesn't hit nothing no and it's actually like yeah it's yeah it's good and now look I'll go straight the steering rack here the tie rods are now they're like perfectly level I just have to slowly turn around finishing up the last Mount now tape and go ahead and let her down oh it's not gonna go anywhere look at that dude she's in there BB BB k booster boy Kyle fab there he is motors held up on their sown wait faint came out pretty good oh that's solid for that solid it doesn't even have the rear little what's it called on the back row wishbones yeah check it out Brent yeah he's there I see one problem what's that is it missing a turbo I was like oh what's your problem irony is where she's gonna be all right Wow couple weeks away she's back on the ground and that bar doesn't sit too low at all yeah it's good all right so we got the K STI back to the garage how you feeling man she's almost there almost got the mounts done just got to do some little stuff now we have to extend that little shaft that goes to the steering rack and then we just have to get the wiring finished up get some coolant stuff done on this they said Forester one was longer so I'm gonna go check out this spot tomorrow to see if they have one just to measure it see if he'll reach yeah yeah she's getting there definitely some more work to do we'll see how much we can get done by the end of this week because the goal would still be to try to drive it to the track on Sunday yeah this weekend so Tuesday right now you start like four or five days so we'll see if we can get it going if not my just trailered over there just to let people look at it if anything but she is getting there and if you're noticing right now my hatch is not in its spot because we just dropped the STI off and then we loaded my hatch up on to the trailer and we're gonna be bringing it over to PFI right now so I can start doing the fuel stuff on that tomorrow and yeah but it's gonna be it for tonight I guess I mean got a lot done today so and also for anyone worrying about this mount right here because it's just hose clamped on this is actually like something they do for pro mods and Top Fuel dragsters they literally just have saddle mounts just like that so they can rip the motors out of the cars a lot faster and that guy with the rear wheel drive J Series civic right now he had a K series in that one before he had all his motor mounts just like that and that thing didn't go anywhere and yeah I went nines with mounts like that it's not gonna go anywhere dude it's solid that's like a legit way they do mounts I've never done it so like when I first saw it I thought it was kind of sketched but after you tighten those things down it's not gonna move at all but uh yeah she's in there motor mounts are done probably gonna be a long video of just talking and showing stuff but we had to get it done that's how I was spent a couple days getting her knocked out now she's one step closer so it's gonna be it for tonight guys and I'm gonna get up early and start working on the hatch and guess I'll see you guys then but thanks for watching\n"
