How To Increase Your Internet Speed with Open DNS

**How to Boost Your Internet Speed Using OpenDNS and Google Public DNS**

---

In this article, we will guide you through the process of boosting your internet speed by switching to OpenDNS and Google Public DNS. This method is particularly useful if you're experiencing slow or unstable internet connections due to issues with your ISP's DNS servers.

### Introduction to DNS

The Domain Name System (DNS) is a service that translates domain names into IP addresses, allowing devices to communicate over the internet. While it’s a crucial part of internet functionality, many users are unaware that they can improve their online experience by switching to third-party DNS services like OpenDNS or Google Public DNS.

### Why Switch to OpenDNS or Google Public DNS?

OpenDNS and Google Public DNS are both highly reputable and secure DNS providers known for their fast performance. Many users report significant improvements in internet speed and stability when using these services compared to their ISP’s default DNS. For example, the speaker mentions that Virgin Media DNS can be particularly slow and unreliable.

### Step-by-Step Guide: Changing Your DNS Settings

#### Accessing Network Settings

1. **Open Network Settings**: Click on the network icon located in the bottom-right corner of your taskbar. Right-click on the network icon and select "Network and Internet Settings."

2. **Select Adapter Options**: Inside the settings menu, you’ll see options for Wi-Fi and Ethernet. If you’re using a desktop computer, you may not see the Wi-Fi option, but that’s okay—we’ll focus on Ethernet.

#### Configuring OpenDNS

1. **Ethernet Properties**:

- Right-click on your Ethernet connection and select "Properties."

- Navigate to the tabs for **Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)** and **Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)**.

2. **OpenDNS Settings**:

- For OpenDNS, you’ll need to input the following IP addresses:

- **IPv4 DNS**: `208.67.222.123` and `208.67.220.123`

- **IPv6 DNS**: `2001:db8:85a3::8:800:2:30` and `2001:db8:85a3::8:800:2:31`

Be sure to enter these addresses exactly as shown. If you’re unsure about the exact format, you can look them up or copy them from a reliable source.

#### Configuring Google Public DNS

1. **Google DNS Settings**:

- For Google Public DNS, input the following IP addresses:

- **IPv4 DNS**: `8.8.8.8` and `8.8.4.4`

- **IPv6 DNS**: `2001:4860:4860::8888` and `2001:4860:4860::4844`

These addresses are straightforward to remember, making them a popular choice for many users.

#### Wi-Fi Settings (Optional)

If you’re using a laptop or device with Wi-Fi capabilities, you’ll need to repeat the process for your Wi-Fi connection. Simply right-click on the Wi-Fi icon in your system tray, select "Properties," and follow the same steps as above, choosing either OpenDNS or Google Public DNS.

### Tips from the Speaker

- **Save Your Original DNS Settings**: Before making any changes, consider saving your original DNS settings. This way, if you encounter issues with the new DNS servers, you can easily revert to your default settings.

- **Monitor Performance**: After switching to a new DNS service, monitor your internet speed and stability. If you notice improvements, it’s likely worth keeping the new DNS settings.

- **Stay Informed**: The speaker recommends subscribing to their YouTube channel for more helpful tips and updates on computer maintenance and optimization.

### Conclusion

By following these steps, you can significantly improve your internet browsing experience by switching to OpenDNS or Google Public DNS. Both services are reliable, fast, and secure, making them excellent alternatives to slow or unstable ISP DNS servers. "WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enwhat you guys gonna nother video here for you in this one we're gonna be taking a look at how we can possibly boost or increase our internet speed with Open DNS that Open DNS has been around for a long time it's it's pretty secure and it's super fast and you can also use Google Public DNS as well which actually can speed up your internet quite considerably compared to your your ISPs DNS they are I know Virgin Media DNS is pretty bad and I sometimes have issues with the DNS and also have to keep changing it so now I don't use it at all and I used my own DNS which I prefer to do which gives me a lot more better speed and also much more stability when I'm surfing the web so let's take a look at how we can go about doing this I can't remember who asked me for this video it was about a week or so ago in the comments and we're going to take a look at how it to do it's pretty straightforward and easier to do down the bottom right inside here you all of your little network icon right click on this and open up your networking internet settings here inside here you'll see two options Wi-Fi and Ethernet if you don't see the Wi-Fi don't worry it just means you don't have Wi-Fi installed on that computer and it's not running so if it's a desktop computer you probably won't see this but that's okay don't worry about it I'll show you how to go about changing both of these just in case you're on a laptop so first off we're going to start with Ethernet come over to the right-hand side here and you'll see change adapter options click on this one and you're then see Ethernet and Wi-Fi on the Ethernet one here you can just double click it or you can right-click and go properties it depends on what you want to do okay they're both going to do the same thing so once you inside your Ethernet properties you're going to see two areas which are going to be important Internet Protocol version 4 and also Internet Protocol version 6 so we do version 4 first I'm going to go to the properties tab here open this up and then go down to open DNS server and addresses automatically and change this to use the following DNS server address now we can put in our DNS server which we want to put in which is Open DNS and they use a IP address so you might want to write these down and keep them close just in case you want to use your normal ISPs DNS server and then when they go down you can change them and it's a pretty good way of getting back up on the Internet wall narrow DNS servers have gone offline and that happens quite a lot with virgin media to be honest and we're gonna go to 20 here so slightly different numbers as you can see on the alternative section here like so click OK and let's just shut that window off so about now now what we want to do next here is go to Internet Protocol version 6 and then we need to go over to where it says properties and this is going to allow us to again obtain our own following DNS server addresses from open doing this and that these ones are slightly different so we want to do to 620 : 0 : you need to make sure you get these exactly right otherwise they won't work and that we're going to be doing CCC : : there's two lots of colons here and are too and that's what you need to put in there ok now you can do if you want to save time you can copy this and in just edit the last part here so on the last part we need to change this ok this see here to Adi it's exactly the same apart from that C and that D there case of one C and Wednesday like so click OK and it click a close that is your Ethernet done for Open DNS and down here also Wi-Fi you can change this as well going to right click and go properties on the here and again we need to change both of these now I'll do this one as Google so you can see the both them okay so this is going to be Google Public DNS so I'm going to go to Internet Protocol version 4 for Google DNS properties use the following DNS server addresses I'm going to do 8 hates this one's nice and easy to remember and on the bottom we need to just do 4 and 4 very nice and easy with duty protocol version 6 here properties and that this one is gonna be slightly different so we're gonna go down here it's 2001 : for 860 and in : for 860 and in colon colon and then 8 - 8 - 8 - 8 now again you can do the same thing what we did before you can copy this one and paste it down the bottom and just change the end part cuz that's all you need to do so the last one is the last two digits on this one and you're good to go and that is how you can change your DNS server to increase or boost your speed for from Open DNS and also Google DNS as well very secure very fast DNS service probably some times faster than your eyes PE ones that you're using ok anyway
